<p>Foldable Smartphones have finally started gaining momentum in China&#8217;s smartphone market. Following the CINNO Research data report, the foldable smartphone market share is inflated by 72% based on a Year-on-Year comparison. It is pretty surprising to see the positive trend in foldable sales when overall Smartphone sales <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/16/foxconn-warns-of-declining-electronics-sector-as-sales-dip-in-2023/">have reduced</a> for eleven straight quarters. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="620" height="874" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/foldabel-phone-market-china.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-559827" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/foldabel-phone-market-china.jpg 620w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/foldabel-phone-market-china-213x300.jpg 213w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/foldabel-phone-market-china-298x420.jpg 298w" sizes="(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px" /></figure>

<p><strong><em>Must See: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/11/foldable-phones-may-be-required-to-comply-with-googles-specific-hardware-requirements/">Foldable Phones May Be Required To Comply With Google’s Specific Hardware Requirements</a></em></strong></p>

<p>The latest foldable launch by Huawei has made it secure 1st position in the sales list. Thanks to the Huawei Mate X3 and its exciting design and specifications have led to solid sales in Q2 2023. The onboard software also enabled the foldable smartphone to garner maximum sales. However, Oppo managed to gain 2nd position with Samsung tailing at the 3rd position. Samsung sales mostly relied on the previous year&#8217;s foldable i.e. Fold 4 and Flip 4 as the new foldable were introduced recently. </p>

<p>The Vivo, Honor, and Xiaomi remained at the 4th, 5th, and 6th position, respectively in terms of sales for the first half of 2023. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="978" height="639" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-fodlable-market-report.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-559828" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-fodlable-market-report.png 978w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-fodlable-market-report-300x196.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-fodlable-market-report-768x502.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-fodlable-market-report-696x455.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/china-fodlable-market-report-643x420.png 643w" sizes="(max-width: 978px) 100vw, 978px" /></figure>

<p>Among all the OEMs, Huawei manages to secure half of the overall foldable market share. Meanwhile, Samsung follows with the ~40% overall market share. Other manufacturers&#8217; share is also set to increase with good sales in the recent months.</p>

<h2><strong>Flip or Fold: Which design rules the market?</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="671" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fodlable-phone-market-1024x671.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-559829" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fodlable-phone-market-1024x671.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fodlable-phone-market-300x197.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fodlable-phone-market-768x503.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fodlable-phone-market-696x456.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fodlable-phone-market-1068x700.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fodlable-phone-market-641x420.png 641w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fodlable-phone-market-741x486.png 741w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/fodlable-phone-market.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The Horizontal Flip aka Fold form factor seems to be attracting more buyers due to its large display. The report indicates that the Fold-form factor catered to 55% of sales. In this form factor, Huawei manages to secure 1st rank followed by Samsung and Honor at consecutive positions. </p>

<p>However, the vertical display aka Flip form factor is now slowly catching up.</p>

<p>Interestingly, Huawei holds China&#8217;s ultra-high-end foldable smartphone market with phones priced above 10000 Yuan (~$1383). </p>

The total shipments during this period reached 354.94 million units. During Q1, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a> lead the market with a 22 percent market share, followed by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a> (17 percent), <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a> (14 percent), <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oppo</a> (11 percent), <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Vivo</a> (10 percent), and finally Huawei (4 percent).</p>

<p>For those unaware, the Chinese tech giant&#8217;s smartphone operations has been struggling as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/05/18/tsmc-halts-new-huawei-orders/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">US sanctions cut off its primary chip supplier TSMC</a>. This had essentially crippled its smartphone business as it had to rely on its existing inventory for its new launches. Furthermore, the company even had to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/17/huawei-sells-honor-subsidiary-to-zhixin-new-information-technology-co-ltd/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">sell of its budget handset unit, Honor</a> as well, while it expanded its business scope into other fields like the automobile industry and cloud computing related services.</p>

This also holds true for China&#8217;s smartphone market that is expected to rebound in the fourth quarter, although, this growth for smartphone makers is expected to eat away at the market share of the country&#8217;s current leader, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a>.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20201102PD206.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>DigiTimes</em> </a>report, the fourth quarter is expected to rebound due in part to Apple&#8217;s launch of its latest flagship iPhone 12 series. Furthermore, the aggressive marketing strategy adopted by other local OEMs like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo is also expected to raise its market share, at the expense of the leftover market share of Huawei.</p>

<p>Back in the third quarter of 2020, smartphone sales in China fell by 25.2 percent and 26.2 percent subsequently. This was due to weak demands in the local market, during which time, Huawei also faced <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/17/us-reinforces-restrictions-on-huaweis-access-to-chips-and-other-tech/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reinforced restrictions from US sanctions</a>. Despite facing these issues, the Chinese tech giant still managed to lead the third quarter of 2020 in the region.</p>

<p>Notably, Huawei&#8217;s market share is also expected to be snatched away by the US smartphone vendor, Apple. We can expect the Chinese rankings for the final quarter of 2020 to shift a bit, although, it is still too early to tell. So stay tuned for more updates.</p>
