Huawei recently announced its 2017 Mate-series flagships -the Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 Porsche Design. The launch of the models was preceded by series of leaks and rumours and quite honestly, there isn’t any disappointment as far as the specifications and design go.

The Mate 10 has now been subjected to the teardown process showing the internals and indeed, Huawei seems to have got it all right in the design and hardware, including the internals on the Mate 10. We’ll leave our final verdict until Linus does a review of the model.

The Mate 10 comes with an expansive 5.9-inch 2K display and it features a bi-axial curved glass at the back panel. It also features a dual camera at the rear which is co-designed by Leica. The outward design at the rear also features a unique design around the camera aspect having a special texture and a horizontal stripe produced by vacuum electroplating process. On the internal aspect, the Mate 10 uses a three-stage design that sees the motherboard, battery and sub-board existing separately. The design is also minimalistic in outlook such that repairs may not be too difficult.

The Huawei Mate 10 was officially unveiled first in Germany on October 16, thereafter the flagship series was launched in China on Friday, October 20. The Mate 10 series were announced with a pricing regime cheaper than those of the models in the European market. In China, the Huawei Mate 10 comes in at 3,899 Yuan for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage version while the 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage model costs 4,499 Yuan. The flagship Mate 10 went on sale immediately after its launch and the stock was exhausted in no distant time.

Turns out the Mate 10 stock wasn’t enough which resulted in it being sold out in a short while. It has now emerged that Huawei has ramped up production by 10% in order to meet up the demand. The Mate 10 will no doubt experience a surge in demand as a result of the sleek design it packs and the Kirin 970 AI chip onboard. Pre-orders for the Mate 10 was opened at VMall on October 17 ahead of its China launch and few days after, it had accrued over 588,000 preorders. In the end, the number of pre-orders was more than the available stock Huawei prepared for the first sale, leaving many persons disappointed.

Huawei’s Bruce Lee, who is the Vice President of Handset Business at Huawei Consumer Business Group, has now added his voice to the discussion on the Mate 10 production. In a Weibo post, Lee stated that the Mate 10 utilises a lot of new technology and faces more components supply compared to previous models. The production process also consumes more time. Also, he stated that the product is receiving much more attention than Huawei envisaged and all these have contributed to the shortage. On the bright side, he hinted that they are going all out to speed up production. The Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 Porsche Design is billed to go on sale on November 15 and we expect no better result in terms of availability.

Huawei is expected to officially launch the Mate 10 alongside the Mate 10 Pro and perhaps Mate 10 Porsche Edition later today while it will debut in China on October 20. The Mate 10 series have had quite a lot of hype surrounding its launch. The is mainly as a result of the AI-capable Kirin 970 chip which would fire up the device. Sure, we’d love to see how the AI works since Huawei touts it to be more than a voice assistant. Ahead of the launch, the real shots of the Huawei Mate 10 have leaked, captured from all sides, with the packaging box inclusive. 

Interestingly, we have seen quite a number of leaked photos of the Mate 10 Pro but the Mate 10 has been quite rare in leaks. But from the look of things, both models will have little differences between them. The major difference is expected to be the Mate 10 Pro’s curved edge design. The screen resolution may be another point of difference as the Mate 10 is listed with a Full HD resolution while the Mate 10 Pro is expected with a Quad HD (1440 x 2880 pixels) display and a more classic 16:9 screen aspect ratio. The Mate 10 seems to also have a curved edge design at the back which is made of glass. The rear camera bump looks like that seen on the Mate 10 pro with a reduced bump. The camera is a dual camera setup aligned vertically with the LED flash by its side. The front view shows the device will feature ultra-thin bezels at the chin and would come with a high screen-to-body ratio.

Specs wise, the Huawei Mate 10 is expected to have a 5.9-inch display with 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution and would be powered by a Kirin 970 chip, which is Huawei’s first 10nm chip and one with AI capabilities. One of the photos shows that what we have here is the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage version. Interestingly, it is listed as running EMUI 8 based on Android 8 Oreo but we are actually expecting EMUI 6 as the next version of Huawei customised Android skin. The Mate 10 packs a Leica-branded camera setup which is still a 12MP main sensor teaming up with a 20MP monochrome sensor just like was featured on the Mate 9 and Huawei P10.

Ahead of its official launch announcement today, camera samples of Huawei Mate 10 have surfaced online. This time, the camera samples were uploaded by the company’s product manager, Mr Bruce Lee.

The camera samples released shows various images in different scenarios, including low light, sunny day, among others. From the images, it appears that the color reproduction is good, thanks to the Leica lens used for capturing images.

However, the images are not posted in high quality so we cannot comment on the actual quality, but from the available samples, it seems pretty good.

While the leak only reveals the camera samples of the smartphone, the earlier leaks gave us an idea of what to expect from the phone in terms of specifications.

The Huawei Mate 10 will feature a 5.9-inch display with screen resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. It is powered by company’s own Kirin 970 processor, along with 4GB / 6GB of RAM. There are two options in terms of internal storage — 64GB and 128GB.

Earlier, the company had said that the Kirin 970 is the world’s first chipset to have a dedicated NPU, meaning it has an A.I. on the device itself. It doesn’t need to connect to an internet server.

The phone comes equipped with third-generation Leica dual camera setup at the back. While one lens is of 20-megapixel, the other one is of 23-megapixel. It runs on Android 8.0 Oreo-based EMUI 6.0 operating system. The smartphone packs a 4,000mAh battery. 

As per the reports, the Mate 10 will be available in three color options —  Obsidian Black, Sapphire Blue and Gold Mocha. It is expected to be priced at around 4,299 Yuan.

On the other hand, the Mate 10 Pro will feature a 5.9-inch full-screen display with 18:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1440 × 2880 pixels. Besides Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, the company will also be launching Mate 10 Lite and the Mate 10 Porsche Edition.

It is just a matter of few hours before the company makes an official announcement of the phone’s pricing and availability.

Huawei Mobile has released a new video on its Twitter account which teases the Mate 10 that would be unveiled on October 16. This isn’t the first video the company is releasing which projects the capabilities and features of the Mate 10 and it wouldn’t be the last we would be seeing before October 16. But the video is arguably different because it teases the artificial intelligence piloted by the Kirin 970 chip which the Mate 10 features.

The video teases the Mate 10 as being not just a smartphone but that it sees, thinks and learns like humans. It further projects the device as coming with built-in AI and thus it goes more than being a smartphone but is an intelligence machine. The teaser still boils down to the AI-capable Kirin 970 chip but it looks promising to see what functions the AI co-ordinates. An earlier teaser had tipped the AI to be more than just a voice prompt, so it is likely going to offer more functions than the likes of Samsung’s Bixby and Amazon’s Alexa and their ilks.

The Huawei Mate 10 promises to be a stunner both on the design and other hardware. The Mate 10 would have a full-screen design but with a considerable amount of bezels and a physical home button but its co-traveller, the Mate 10 Pro is expected with a bezel-less design. The Mate 10 is expected with a 5.99-inch 2k EntireView display with 18:9 aspect ratio. It will get its juice from a 4200mAh battery with fast charging support and would be available in three variants with 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM. On the other hand, the Mate 10 Pro will feature a 6.0-inch 2K display with a similar 18:9 aspect ratio. Just like the Mate 10, it will have an IP67 certification and of course would be powered by a Kirin 970 chip, same as the Mate 10. The Mate 10 is also expected to pack a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, curved edges and almost 90% screen-to-body ratio. The Mate 10 Pro will also get its juice from a 4,200mAH battery.

Ahead of the October 16 official launch of the Huawei Mate 10, we have had the opportunity of seeing what is said to be the Mate 10’s real photo. The single photo was leaked by popular Twitter leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks). Considering Evan Blass’ track record, we have absolutely no reason to doubt this is actually the Mate 10.

The Mate 10 is traditionally a big smartphone, so no surprise about the large size of the photo. It is a flagship device and from the photo, we can gather that it won’t be too different from the Mate 9 and other preceding Mate series models. Previous rumors had tipped the Mate 10 as coming with a bezel-less, full-screen design but that may not be the case. In fact, a Twitter user expressed this concern and Blass was quick to respond that the bezel-less, full-screen model would be the Mate 10 Pro. Recall that Huawei unveiled the Mate 9 last year along with the Mate 9 Pro which adopted a curved edge display. This time around, the screen will see a change to the trendy bezel-less design.

Apart from confirming the launch date for the flagship Mate 10, the tweet also confirms that the Mate 10 would be powered by a Kirin 970 chipset. Not as if we are just hearing this for the first time as the October 16 launch date had earlier featured in a rumor but it just became official. Huawei unveiled the Kirin 970 chip, touted to be the world’s first processor with a dedicated NPU at IFA and that means the Mate 10 presents us with the opportunity to see how the new AI chip will function.

Last week, we came across an image teaser that points to an October 16 launch for the Huawei Mate 10 which will likely take place in Munich, Germany. Now, yet another teaser has emerged, this time a video which projects the features of the Mate 10. Both the first image teaser and this video teases the unnamed model with the caption ” Meet the device worth waiting for”. Which means they both refer to the same model.

Although no mention of the Mate 10 was made in the video, there is no doubt the teaser is for the flagship. It was mentioned in the video that the device belong to the Mate series and ordinarily, the Mate 10 is the only expected model in the series. The source of the leak also disclosed that the video is for the Mate 10.

Specifically, the video focuses on the Mate 10’s dual camera which would still be co-engineered with Leica just like on the Mate 9. The camera setup will still be a 12MP main sensor teaming up with a 20MP monochrome sensor in the same manner it was featured on the Mate 9 and Huawei P10. The pictures showcased inside the video could possibly be camera samples of the flagship Mate 10 and they show the possibility of some improvements in the camera quality.

It’s been barely a week since a report emerged that Huawei will begin mass production of the Kirin 970 chip that would feature on its upcoming Mate 10 flagship in September. A new rumour has sprung up from Poland alleging that the Huawei Mate 10 would make its grand debut in October. The rumour was even specific about the launch date being October 16 and the venue to be in Munich. The Huawei P10 was first launched in Europe as well before it was unveiled in China.

The Mate 10 is expected as the final flagship that would be released by the Chinese tech giant this year. It is coming on the heels of the launch of the Huawei P10 earlier in the year, and then the Honor 9 which was launched not too long. The Mate 10 will be the giant of them all, with it size traditionally being phablet size.The device is expected with a 6-inch JDI display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution. The device will feature a Kirin 970 chip, which would Huawei’s first 10nm chip.

The rumour also listed the price tag of the Mate 10 to fall on the region of PLN4,000 in Poland, which is around $1100. In addition to the Mate 10, Huawei is also said to be working on a Mate 10 Lite which would cost half the price of the Mate 10 at PLN1,999 (~$556) and as you’d guess, would have a slightly reduced size from the Mate 10 and it is rumoured to be 5.8 inches. The price tag looks way outrageous and cut off from reality but then, the Mate 10 is meant to rival the iPhone 8 which is expected to have a hefty price tag. But then, Huawei isn’t Apple and doesn’t even have any model which sells as high as $800 and even the Mate 9 is priced less than $800.  This is just a rumour and so, should be taken with a pinch of salt.
