Ahead of the launch of the Xiaomi 14 series launch this week, Xiaomi had teased their upcoming Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro will feature Leica’s Summilux camera lenses, which are more premium and better than the previous Leica Summicron lenses found on the Xiaomi 13 series and Xiaomi 12S series. For context, a Leica Summilux-M 35 f/1.4 lens costs 3895 USD on Leica’s website.

Although the Xiaomi 14 series may be Xiaomi’s first smartphones to feature the Leica Summilux lenses, the Leica Summilux lenses can already can be found on smartphones since April 2017. So what smartphone brand was the first to feature “Leica Summilux lenses”? That brand is none other than Huawei, and the first smartphone to feature the premium Leica Summilux lens is the Huawei P10 Plus.

Huawei P10 Plus

The Huawei P10 Plus is Huawei’s best smartphone released in early 2017. Powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 960, the smartphone has smooth and fast performance to last you the whole day with a 3750 mAh battery alongside support for Huawei’s SuperCharge. 

But of course, the highlight here was the cameras. Both the phones featured a 20MP + 12MP Leica certified dual camera setup at the back. However, the larger Huawei P10 Plus comes with a wider f/1.8 aperture instead of f/2.2 on the standard P10, and the P10 Plus has a more premium Leica SUMMILUX-H F1.8 lens, while the P10 featured the SUMMARIT-H F2.2 lens, the same one found on the Huawei Mate 9, P9 and P9 Plus.

After 2017

After the launch of the Huawei P10 Plus, Huawei started using the Leica Summilux lenses in its premium smartphones ever since, starting with the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro launched in late 2017. The full list of Huawei’s Leica lenses used over the years is as shown below.

The Huawei P20 Pro was a particular breakthrough for Huawei, as it was the world’s first triple rear camera smartphone, and it earned first VARIO-SUMMILUX-H for Huawei. Then in late 2018, Huawei Mate 20 Pro was announced as Huawei’s first flagship to have an ultra-wide angle 16mm equivalent lens, earning the lens title of VARIO-SUMMILUX-H 1:1.8-2.4/16-80 ASPH.

The Huawei P30 Pro could reach up to a 125mm equivalent lens with its periscope zoom lens, and then the P40 Pro+ in 2020 broke the record with its 10 times periscope optical zoom lens, giving a 240mm equivalent lens quality on a smartphone. 

In 2021, Huawei ended its partnership with Leica with the P50 and P50 Pro, the last Huawei smartphones in collaboration with Leica. Huawei then utilised its own in-house XMAGE camera branding solution, from the Huawei Mate 50 series onwards in 2022. 

In turn, Xiaomi has carried on the torch of premium smartphones in collaboration with Leica, and the brand is expected to announced to launch its latest Xiaomi 14 series of premium smartphones with Leica certified cameras this week in China. HUAWEI unveiled EMUI 11 based on Android 10 as the latest version of its mobile operating system at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2020 in September. Since then, the company has been seeding out beta as well as stable builds for the eligible smartphones and tablets worldwide. Now, five months after the software’s official announcement, it is finally being rolled out to the global variants of the HUAWEI Mate20 series in stable form.

According to Huawei Central, the Chinese telecom giant has finally started delivering EMUI 11 stable update for the global variants of the following HUAWEI Mate20 series models.

• HUAWEI Mate20
• HUAWEI Mate20 Pro
• HUAWEI Mate20 X

The update for the above-listed devices comes with build number EMUI 11.0.0.138. Interestingly, the OTA file only weighs 1.86GB in size for all three handsets. Anyway, it is worth noting that the update is being rolled out in batches. Therefore, it may take time to reach every region. 

Also, as per the timeline, even the company’s first 5G smartphone, HUAWEI Mate20 X 5G is scheduled to get the update along with other models in the series. Although it hasn’t received it now, it should get it soon as the firm has already rolled out this update for the Chinese variant earlier this month.

That said, in case you own any of these phones, then head over to Settings > System & updates > Software update > Check for updates to check whether your unit has received it. Additionally, users can also request OTA file from the Support app by navigating to the Service tab > update > Check for updates > download and install.

The Huawei Mate 20 series was launched back in 2018. The lineup consisted of the company’s then premium grade flagship handsets. Now, the company is officially ending the support for the Mate 20 series and will be no longer offer security updates.

The Huawei Mate 20 series featured the HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset, which was based on the 7nm process. In terms of performance, the device is still a capable handset. Although, on the Chinese tech giant’s official website, Huawei removed the names of three devices from its EMUI security update list. This included the Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, and Mate 20 X, which will no longer receive either the monthly or quarterly security patches, as per an AnTuTu report.

At the moment, it seems that only the Mate 20 X 5G variant will receive the update, however, the rest of the Mate 20 lineup will are no longer on the security update list. The flagship series aren’t exactly dated by today’s standards but Huawei has decided to end the support of these devices. So this report arrives as a reminder to the owners of these smartphones.

For those unaware, the Huawei Mate 20 series is a flagship model from the company from back in 2018 and featured top notch specs for its time. This included the Kirin 980 SoC paired with 40W fast charging and a 40 megapixel primary rear camera, which was said to be one of the best performers of that year.

Wi-Fi 6 technology is one of these latest advancements but a Huawei executive has stated that it is not worth the upgrade.

After the Xiaomi Mi 10 series launched, it seems like 2020 would set a standard of smartphones arriving with the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard. Many users believed that through this new technology even USB 3.0 is rendered obsolete thanks to its faster data transfer capabilities. Theoretically, Wi-Fi 6 can achieve 150MB/s but according to Bruce Lee, the Product Manager at Huawei Technologies, that is not the case.

The senior executive went on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website, to share his views on the topic. He mentioned that the current Wi-Fi 6 technology which is featured in most smartphones can only reach up to 1200Mbps (MegaBits) while the highest recorded is around 900Mbps. This implies that these smartphones cannot achieve 150MB/s (MegaBytes) data transfer speeds. In simpler terms, although Wi-Fi 6 has great potential, its current iterations are not as impressive as they are made out to be.

To elaborate further and prove his point, Lee revealed his own WiFi connection using his Huawei Mate 20. His device reached 1733Mbps which makes it technically faster than the smartphones featuring Wi-Fi 6. This may also imply that the Huawei P40 series or other flagship grade smartphones from the Chinese tech giant being launched later during this year might not feature the newer standard. But, it wouldn’t be surprising if the company does actually add the feature later down the road.

Earlier today, Huawei had some exciting news to share. According to Huawei Consumer Business CEO Richard Yu, the Huawei Mate 20 series has successfully managed to break 17 million shipments. The Huawei P30 series has also been doing excellently, breaking 20 million units shipped, very good numbers for them.

On top of these impressive sales numbers for the Huawei Mate 20 and P30, the company is also confident that the sales of the Huawei Mate 30 series will match up, even without Google Mobile Services. Early sales results have been very positive, and the pre-sales numbers were apparently six times higher than that of the P30 series.

Since the Mate 30 series launch in September, Huawei has launched the Mate 30 series in China and a few South East Asian countries, but they have plans to expand to the European market fairly soon. There’s also the Huawei Mate 30 RS Porsche Design, which will be up for sale on the 11th of November. The handset has 12 GB of RAM and a massive internal storage of 512 GB (UFS 3.0). It will be available with a pricing of 12,999 Yuan (~$1,850). In Europe, the Mate 30 RS is priced at 2,095 euros (~$2,330).

Recently, Huawei said that its smartphones will be getting the new Android Q update in the near future and also shared a list of at least 17 smartphones eligible for the upcoming major Android update.

The company had also released a list of smartphones that were eligible for the EMUI 9.1 custom interface update and also mentioned the timeline for the update. Based on that timeline, the Mate 20 series is all set to receive the EMUI 9.1 update later this week.

Huawei will start rolling out the EMUI 9.1 upgrade for eligible smartphones by the end of this week. The first smartphones to receive the upgrade will be the Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 RS Porsche Design, and the P20 Lite. The Mate 20 series had received the beta version of the update in April this year.

Overall, a total of 13 Huawei smartphones will be upgraded to EMUI 9.1 by July 2019, which includes Huawei P20, P20 Pro, Nova 3, Nova 3i, P30 Lite, Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, Mate 10 RS Porsche Design, Mate 9, Mate 9 Pro, Y9 2019, Y6 Pro 2019, and Y5 2019.

There are two smartphones which are slated to receive the new EMUI update in the month of August — Huawei P10 and P10 Plus which were launched around two years ago.

Huawei’s EMUI 9.1 adopts a minimalist design, thanks to Android 9.0 Pie’s deep customization optimization. This version also brings improvements in wallpapers, themes, and icons. There are also several improvements to the overall user apps which makes it easier to use the user interface.

There are also improvements in artificial intelligence (AI) features covering various aspects such as health, office, entertainment, travel and more. The company has been pursuing the synergy of mobile and PC office systems and has developed the Huawei Share “One Touch” feature. With a single touch, the phone and Huawei MateBook can establish a connection and quickly transfer pictures, videos and documents.

Additionally, the EMUI 9.1 also comes with “AR measurement”, which not only measures the line segment and area but also measures the volume with one click. What’s more interesting is that when the family and friends are in the same box, “Huawei AR measurement” can also measure the heights of all members of the family at one time.

EMUI 9.1 also comes with an upgrade to the new GPU Turbo graphics acceleration technology. This gaming-related feature introduces support for 51 domestic games in addition to the already supported 60 domestic games, bringing a low-power full-frame gaming experience.

It also comes with improvements for Huawei’s voice assistant as well as smart dual 4G SIM card switching, which automatically switches the primary SIM cards based on the one with the best internet coverage.

Huawei recently announced that the Mate 20 series would be getting EMUI 9.1 beta update. The update will hit selected users of the Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 X, and Mate 20 RS Porsche design. The update will also hit other models as time goes on.

Huawei is known for innovations and the new EMUI 9.1 is stuffed with several new features worthy of note. Among them, the most striking is Huawei’s new self-developed system performance innovation tool – EROFS (Super File System) and Ark compiler.

The Ark Compiler brings support for architecture level optimizations resulting in significant performance improvements. It will make the Android system more responsive and robust against different actions. Yu reveals that the new compiler can improve system fluency by 24%, system response by 44% and enhance operations of third-party apps by 60%. It will further strengthen multitasking by optimizing several processes and resulting in better speed and performance. Improved battery performance, faster execution speeds and compatibility across all new Android devices term Ark as the best alternative for ART (Android Runtime).

Huawei won’t hold any usage rights for Ark Compiler, which means it will be open source for the industry. Huawei expects app developers to soon start using the new refined compiler for Android.

Currently, Android is using the inbuilt ART virtual machine to compile the application code into machine code. The virtual machine dynamically loads and execute the machine code on the Android system. It is 2x faster than the Dalvik VM which was found in the earlier Android builds.

On its part, EROFS (Extendable Read-Only File System) that is also being introduced on EMUI 9.1 is aimed at replacing the EXT4 file format of the system partition (equivalent to the computer’s C drive) with Huawei’s newly developed read-only file system. The new system increases the average read performance by 20% on average. The application startup speed is faster, especially in the heavy load scenario. Another advantage of of the EROFS is that it brings additional space savings on the system ROM by 2GB. Furthermore, since EROFS is a read-only design, the system partition cannot be rewritten by third parties bringing additional security to the Android system.

It can also link equipment such as watches and accessories to provide users with accurate and comprehensive indoor running data and sports guidance. After the Huawei Sports Health App binds devices and social apps, you can synchronize data and refresh the step list.

Huawei has been pursuing the synergy of mobile and PC office systems and has developed the Huawei Share “One Touch” feature. With a single touch, the phone and Huawei MateBook can establish a connection and quickly transfer pictures, videos and documents. It is reported that it takes only 1 minute to transfer 500 photos and 35 seconds to transfer 1GB video. It also allows users to extract the text on the picture and share on the clipboard.

In addition, EMUI 9.1 also implements “AR measurement”, which not only measures the line segment and area but also measures the volume with one click. What’s more interesting is that when the family and friends are in the same box, “Huawei AR measurement” can also measure the heights of all members of the family at one time.

In terms of smart travel, EMUI 9.1 has more depth integration between mobile phones and cars. Huawei has already reached an agreement with BMW and other car manufacturers to launch the mobile phone key function. Without a physical car key, the mobile phone can complete a series of operations such as driving the car, starting the car engine, locking the car, etc., which is very convenient. Huawei mobile phone keys follow the CCC 1.0 standard of the Car Connectivity Consortium. The key and algorithm logic is stored in the hardware chip, which will not be accessed and copied by third-party programs, effectively protecting the safe use of mobile phone keys. Even when the phone is out of battery power, the phone key function can continue to be used after the phone is powered off. At this point, it can be used up to 15 times in 24 hours. Huawei P30 vs Huawei Honor View 20 vs Huawei Mate 20

Design

The design is the real strong point of the Honor View 20. After all, a lot of Honor devices succeeded for their stunning aesthetics. The Honor View 20 gets rid of notches, sliders, and bezels thanks to a futuristic punch-hole display, and it also comes with a stunning reflect back creating different light waves depending on the viewing angle. While the Honor View 20 has the most gorgeous design, Huawei P30 still comes with a good design and it also has a better build quality. The phone is dust resistant and splashproof, just like the Huawei Mate 20. In my opinion, Huawei P30 is much more beautiful than the Huawei Mate 20 because it comes in more attractive color variants, a cleaner rear design, and even a more compact body.

Display

While the design is the strong point of the Honor View 20, the display is definitely its weak point. It comes with a classic IPS panel, something that you can often find in the midrange segment. It is a good display and its punch-hole design is very attractive as well as the very thin bezels, but it is far from the levels reached from Huawei P30 and Mate 20 which come with a solid high-end screen. They support both DCI-P3 coverage and the HDR10 technology for better color reproduction. I like Huawei P30’s color better thanks to its OLED panel, while Huawei Mate 20 has an LCD display but it also comes with a bigger diagonal (6.53 inches vs 6.1 inches, so it is better for productivity).

Hardware/Software

At a similar price, you can get either the high-end memory configuration of the Honor View 20 and Mate 20 (8/256 GB and 6/128 GB) or the base configuration of the Huawei P30 (6/128 GB). Given that all of these handsets come with the same Kirin 980 chipset and they are all based on Android Pie out of the box, when it comes to performances, the higher-end version of the Honor View 20 is better, especially in multi-tasking environments. With more RAM, you can open more heavy games and apps at the same time. The higher-end version of the Honor View 20 also comes with more storage, but note that you can not expand it as it does not feature an expansion slot, unlike the Huawei P30 and Huawei Mate 20.

Camera

The triple rear camera of the Huawei P30 undoubtedly wins the comparison as it is able to capture a higher quantity of light for better photos in low light conditions, as well as a very high level of detail. Unlike the Honor View 20, it also has Leica optics and an ultrawide lens. Further, it supports up to 3x optical zoom thanks to its telephoto lens. The second place goes to the Huawei Mate 20 which comes again with a triple camera including an ultrawide sensor and a telephoto lens with a 2x optical zoom. Honor View 20 takes the last position with a still nice 48 MP dual camera. Even when it comes to selfies Huawei P30 is the winner with an impressive 32 MP snapper.

Battery

Here, the Honor View 20 wins. It has a bigger battery than Huawei P30 as well as a smaller display than the Huawei Mate 20, so it is pretty obvious that it can last more on a single charge. It even has a very fast charging technology: it can go up to 55 percent in just 30 minutes.

Price

You can get the base variant of the Honor View 20 for just €500 thanks to online street prices, but it has a listing price of €570/$640. Huawei P30 starts from €680/$764, while Huawei Mate 20 starts from €640/$718 globally (now about €500/$561 thanks to street prices). Despite you can get the higher-end version of the Honor View 20 and the Huawei Mate 20 at the same price as the Huawei P30, we still suggest you go for the Huawei P30 because of its better cameras and its great display, unless performances and productivity are your main priority. In that case, I would go for the Huawei Mate 20 due to its bigger and nicer display, even though Honor View 20 has better aesthetics and slightly longer battery life.

Huawei recently revealed that it had sold over 10 million units of the Mate 20 series models till date. With such sales pre-price cut, the Mate 20 sales may be revitalized even with the impending launch of the P30. The price cut spreads across the different models that make up the series. The Mate 20 series comprises the Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20X.  The Mate 20 (6GB+64GB) is now available for 3499 yuan ($521) while the Mate 20 Pro goes for 4899 yuan ($729) after the 500 yuan price slash. The Mate 20X (6GB+128GB) now retails for 4499 yuan ($670). The price cut across the models is likely going to be for a short period but we expect it to sustain the record-breaking sales.

Huawei has announced that its current Mate-series flagship smartphones — Huawei Mate 20 series, has shipped more than 10 million units in just 4 and a half months. It also announced that the Mate 20 series has broken the previous Mate-series and P-series sales record for the same time duration in Greater China.

While the numbers obviously suggest the popularity of the Mate 20 series in the region, the company also says that the devices in this smartphone series also continues to sell well in Western Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and other regions.

Making a statement regarding this milestone, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business said on Weibo: “In four and a half months, Huawei’s Mate20 series shipments broke 10 million units! Thanks to the support, praise and recognition of global consumers, and the pertinence given by everyone. It is suggested that there will be more breakthroughs in 2019 and I look forward to sharing with you the joy of technological advancement !”

In December last year, the Chinese giant had announced that its global smartphone shipments exceeded the 200 million units mark, representing an increase of 66 times in eight years. At that time, the company had reported shipments of Mate 20 series at 5 million units. In January this year, the number increased to 7.5 million units.

In the year 2018, the company’s smartphones shipment crossed 206 million units and it was reported that Huawei’s consumer business revenue has reached $52 billion, which is the largest revenue of Huawei’s BG business.

Earlier, Huawei’s Consumer Business President He Gang had said that the company could be looking to ship around 230 million to 250 million units this year. However, he stressed that everything is dependent on the market conditions and ensuring steady progress with channels and supplier partners. The numbers show that the company is aiming to grow its mobile business by around 30 percent to 50 percent year-on-year.

The company is currently gearing up to launch its new flagship line — Huawei P30 series, which includes P30, P30 Pro, and P30 Lite, on 26th March at a launch event in Paris, France. Since Huawei announced its new flagship SoC Kirin 980 for the second half of 2018, it already launched three affordable flagships phones with the new 7 nm chipset inside. In this article, we compared them in order to establish which is actually the best phone to purchase and which one is really worth the money asked. We are talking about the Huawei Mate 20 that is the first phone with Kirin 980, the Honor Magic 2 that is the first full borderless slider phone and the new Honor V20, the second Huawei phone with a punch hole display.

Design

Huawei Mate 20 has an anonymous and not so brilliant design compared to other flagships. But it has the best build quality: its display is protected by Gorilla Glass and the phone is dust resistant and splash resistant with the IP53 certification. Honor Magic 2 is a very innovative slider phone which comes with a screen-to-body ratio close to 100 percent without needing a notch and with front cameras and sensors embedded in a slide that users can manually open. Honor V20 is the one I love because of its in-display camera allowing a high screen-to-body ratio without sliders and notches, as well as its glass back with awesome light effects which changes its colors depending from the angle from which you look at it.

Display

While Honor V20 is equipped with a midrange-class IPS display, Honor Magic 2 and Huawei Mate 20 offer something more. The former has the AMOLED technology, an in-display fingerprint reader and 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage, while the latter comes with DCI-P3 and HDR technology for outstanding color reproduction, but it has a waterdrop notch.

Hardware/Software

We got an excellent hardware side on each of these devices and their performances are more or less equivalent. They have the new Kirin 980 SoC, a chipset that is considered superior to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, and they come with up to 8 GB of RAM (except Huawei Mate 20 offering up to 6 GB RAM). Honor V20 and Huawei Mate 20 feature an expandable storage, but only Honor V20 has a dedicated micro SD slot to use it without renouncing to the dual SIM capability. All of them come with Android Pie out of the box customized by EMUI 9.

Camera

We still had no chance to try it as it is not on sale yet, but Huawei Honor V20 offers the best rear camera department on the paper. It sports the new 48 MP sensor by Sony paired with a secondary 3D stereo camera able to capture depth info. Honor Magic 2 offers the most interesting front setup with a triple front camera including two depth sensors. Huawei Mate 20 is an excellent camera phone as well and it is the lonely device with an ultrawide lens in its triple camera.

Battery

With Honor V20 and Huawei Mate 20 having exactly the same battery capacity (4000 mAh), the software optimization will surely make the difference. Usually, Mate devices are optimized better than Honor phones, but we can not say the same for these devices until we test Honor V20.

Price

These devices belong to three near but different price ranges. Honor V20 will hit the shelves with a starting price of €460/$526, Honor Magic 2 costs €550/$630 and Huawei Mate 20 is available for €640/$732. With the actual prices, Honor V20 is surely the most interesting and it has the best value for money, even though, excluding the design, the best handset overall is the Huawei Mate 20.

Design

If you want the most impressive design, you should make a choice between Huawei Nova 4 and Honor Magic 2 by basing on your tastes. Alongside the Galaxy A8s by Samsung, the former is the first phone with an in-display camera hole, while the second is a phone with a slider design which reaches almost 100 percent of screen-to-body ratio without a notch, neither a hole. Huawei Mate 20 is the classic device with a waterdrop notch already seen several times, but it is the only splash resistant and dust resistant phone of the trio.

Display

Besides having an innovative design, Honor Magic 2 is also equipped with the most interesting display. It has no bezels, notches or holes, the Super AMOLED technology, full DCI-P3 coverage, and an in-display fingerprint reader. Huawei Mate 20 is almost at the same level, it even adds the HDR10 technology for better color reproduction, but it has just an IPS panel. However, it should be the most resistant one with its Gorilla Glass protection. Huawei Nova 4 has an inferior IPS panel.

Hardware/Software

If you need the fastest device and the most suitable for multi-tasking, Honor Magic 2 comes with the best hardware configuration. It has the most powerful processor by Huawei and 8 GB of RAM in the most powerful variant. Further, you can get up to 256 GB of internal storage, but unlike Huawei Mate 20 and Huawei Nova 4, it is not expandable. Huawei Mate 20 has a Kirin 980 as well, but it comes with just 6 GB of RAM in the costlier variant. Huawei Nova 4 is the worst one as it comes with the Kirin 970 chipset.

Camera

Currently, Huawei Nova 4 is equipped with the best camera department ever, at least on the paper. It sports the latest Sony sensor with a 48 MP resolution embedded in triple camera setup. It should provide the highest level of detail, a low loss of detail with zoom and good performances in low light conditions. At the second place there is Honor Magic 2 with six cameras in total: three on the front and three on the back, but Huawei Mate 20 is not far away with its rear triple camera and a pretty nice 24 MP selfie snapper.

Battery

When it comes to battery life, Honor Magic 2 and Huawei Nova 4 can not do anything against Huawei Mate 20 and its huge 4000 mAh unit. It can last for a full day on a single charge without any problem. On the other hand, thanks to the Magic Charge technology, Honor Magic 2 is one of the phones with the fastest charging. But Huawei Nova 4 should last more than Magic 2 with its slightly bigger unit.

Price

If you want Huawei Mate 20, you are willing to pay about €640 on the global market, Honor Magic 2 costs €550 in China and Huawei Nova 4 is available for €500 in China. There is not a definitive winner in this comparison. I would personally go for the Huawei Mate 20 because of its more balanced specs, great performance, bigger battery, better build quality, stereo speakers, and expandable storage, but you might like Huawei Nova 4 if you want an amazing camera or Honor Magic 2 if you like futuristic designs and innovative features.

Huawei’s EMUI 9 based on Android Pie has been available as a beta for a while. Now a stable update has begun rolling out to some devices.

If you own the Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, P20, or P20 Pro and reside in Europe, you should check your phone as the update is already being pushed to these devices. The update is also rolling out to the Honor View 10, Honor 10, and Honor Play. There is even a report that the Honor View 10 is receiving the update in India.

EMUI 9.0 not only brings Android 9 Pie but also brings some new features. There is a new gesture navigation and also HiVision which is just like Google Lens but with some neat tricks of its own such as calorie identification in foods. The overall UI has also changed, system response speed is said to have increased by 25.8%, and there is now support for multiple back ups to various storage devices.

It seems that everyone is talking about the Huawei Mate 20 Pro as it is one of the most complete smartphones of 2018. Well, we agree with that and we suggest you check out our detailed review of the Pro model. However, the Mate 20 is about $200 cheaper and it has most of the features of the Pro model but it also has a few flaws to consider.

In this review, I will take a look at all the pros and cons of this device after using the phone for one month. I will also take a look at the similarities and key differences to the Mate 20 Pro, so you can make a better buying decision if you are interested in any of these phones. UNBOXING

Inside the packaging, you get all the usual items and some extras include a pair of earphones. In addition, my phone shipped with a soft TPU case but the inclusion of this accessory depends on the region or market.

DESIGN and DISPLAY

I’ve been using the Mate 20 Pro since the official launch and I have to tell you that Mate 20 is similar in a lot of ways.

It’s made of glass and aluminum, the blue color option has a nice textured finish and a special coating that does not attract fingerprints and smudges so easily like conventional glass.

Just like the Mate 20 Pro, the Mate 20 is sturdy and well-made and I’m yet to see any scratches on it after using the phone for quite some time.

The main difference between the Mate 20 and the Pro is the feeling in the hand. The Mate 20 is significantly wider than the Pro model due to a larger display that also has a slightly different aspect ratio.

That display (6.53″, 1080 x 2244) uses IPS LCD technology as opposed to AMOLED screen found on the Mate 20 Pro. On the other hand, the panel is really nice and sharp, colors are vibrant and I had no issues seeing the display outdoors. By the way, the Mate 20 has a significantly smaller notch as opposed to the Mate 20 Pro.

The Mate 20 has a slimmed down triple camera setup that is made in collaboration with Leica. The setup consists of 12 MP, f/1.8, 27mm (wide) sensor, 16 MP, f/2.2, 17mm (ultrawide) and 8 MP, f/2.4, 52mm (telephoto) camera.

We also have a super-fast and accurate fingerprint reader which is implemented on the back whereas the Mate 20 Pro has the scanner implemented under the display.

The face recognition works quite well on the Mate 20. However, it’s less accurate than on the Mate 20 Pro which has an excellent face scanner.

Other features include a headphone jack that provides very good sound quality, IR blaster, a hybrid dual SIM card slot and IP53 certification, meaning that the phone is splashproof and dust resistant. In comparison, the Mate 20 Pro has a higher IP68 rating. Finally, the Mate 20 has a dual speakers’ system that produces balanced and rich audio.

HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

The device ships with the HiSilicon Kirin 980 CPU, 4/6 GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

Great specifications of the Mate 20 assure excellent gaming performance. In fact, the new Mate series phones are the first Android devices that use a 7nm CPU.

I played quite a few 3D games on the highest graphics settings to push the hardware to its limits and there was no stutter, no lag and the graphics looked nice.

In addition, the phone does not get hot even after 30 mins of gaming. Overall, you get a flagship-grade gaming performance, just like with the Mate 20 Pro.

USER INTERFACE

Just like the Pro model, the Mate 20 ships with the EMUI 9 which is based on Android 9.

As usual to Huawei phones, there are tons of features, tweaks, settings, navigation methods and customization options to play with. Just to name a few, I like changing the transitions effects, themes and I use a few smart features like knocking on the screen to take a screenshot. My favorite way of navigating through the UI is using gestures. I found it really convenient for one hand use and it takes just a moment to get used to it.

Just like the Mate 20 Pro, the Mate 20 is a super fast and smooth phone and I can assure that after using both devices for a long time on a daily basis. No matter what you do with the phone, no matter how many apps you are going to install, the new Mates just fly and I’m yet to see either phone stutter or lag.

IMAGE QUALITY

I have to mention that I tested the camera on a dark and cloudy autumn day, meaning that the lighting conditions were pretty bad.

The overall image quality using the Leica-branded camera system is very good. You have the flexibility to choose between 2x optical zoom or use a wide-angle lens which is probably my favorite. Pictures usually come nice and detailed and the colors are quite accurate.

I compared the quality to the Mate 20 Pro and the difference is negligible but the latter phone usually takes pictures with warmer colors and a bit more detail. Again, you won’t be able to see a huge difference most of the time. On the other hand, the Mate 20 Pro has an advantage as it offers 3x optical and 5x hybrid zoom whereas the Mate 20 has only 2x zoom.

Low-light image quality is very good either if you take them using auto or a dedicated night mode. Just like the Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 allows you to take long exposure shots without a tripod and the results are simply amazing. This is arguably the best night image quality I’ve seen on any smartphone.

Portrait shots usually look really nice as the object or subject is nicely separated from the background with almost no artifacts and the bokeh looks creamy.

Selfies look nice. They are sharp, detailed and the colors are quite accurate. Selfie portrait shots look nice too as there no severe artifacts around the subject and pictures will look nice on social media.

Just like on the Pro model, the 4k video has quite a lot of detail and sharpness. However, there is some jello effect going on when you are panning the phone, which is quite frustrating.

On the other hand, the 1080p footage is nice and smooth.

1080p selfie video looks great as it is smooth and stable. Finally, the sound recording quality is good.

BATTERY LIFE

The battery life has been fantastic. On average, I was able to get over 8 hours of screen on time while using the phone quite intensively. My record screen-on time was 12 hours when I used the device just for the basic stuff like web browsing and social media.

The phone ships with the regular fast charger which fully charges the phone in about 1 hour and 10 mins. In comparison, the Mate 20 Pro ships with a 40W super fast charger that charges the phone in less than 1 hour.

CONNECTIVITY

The Mate 20 offers ultra-fast 4.5G network speeds, excellent signal reception, great call quality, super fast Wifi, and dual-frequency GPS that I found to be very accurate for both driving and walking. Also, there is NFC and plenty of sensors on board.

CONCLUSIONS

The Huawei Mate 20 is a solid flagship smartphone for a lot of reasons. Let’s summarize the pros and cons.

I love the design, excellent build, great display, superb all-around performance, very good cameras, and solid battery life.

The main shortcomings are that there is the so-called jello effect in 4K video recording mode, there is no wireless charging and the water and dust resistance rating could be higher.

At the end of the day, the Mate 20 is a great and cheaper alternative to the Mate 20 Pro as it has a ton of premium features. After using the Mate 20 for quite some time, I think that it is a very solid flagship smartphone overall, despite a few shortcomings.

Here, we compared the specs of OnePlus 6, Honor Magic 2 and Huawei Mate 20, two super powerful flagships which are going to be available in the global market at a moderate price, even though they have the best hardware components out there.

OnePlus 6T vs Honor Magic 2 vs Huawei Mate 20

Design

As Honor Magic 2 sports the most innovative design, it is definitely the most attractive handset. It has a slider design with the front cameras and sensors included in the slider just like the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3. This allows a screen-to-body ratio close to 100 percent without the need of a notch interrupting the display. Further, it has smaller dimensions than other devices with the same display size.

Display

With the thinnest bezels as well as 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage, Honor Magic 2 has the most convincing display. But OnePlus 6T is able to provide a similar viewing quality as it has an AMOLED display with DCI-P3 coverage as well. On the other hand, Huawei Mate 20 is the handset with the biggest display which could be better for you if you want a phone for gaming and/or productivity.

Hardware/Software

Kirin 980 is the most recent chipset in the Android market and I did not have the chance to test it deeply, but according to the first benchmark, it is even more performing than Snapdragon 845. If so, Huawei Mate 20 may be the fastest handset of this trio, but given the usual software optimization by OnePlus, the 6T may overclass it. The 6T is still not on sale, so we can not give you a final verdict.

Camera

The most interesting camera department belongs to Honor Magic 2 which boasts six cameras: three on the back and three on the front. While on the rear side you can find a monochromatic sensor as the third module, the front setup has two depth sensors which are also used for facial recognition.

Battery

Huawei Mate 20 has the biggest battery, 300 mAh more than OnePlus 6T and 500 mAh more than Honor Magic 2. It also supports a very fast charging technology which can fill 58 percent of the battery in just 30 minutes.

Price

Huawei Mate 20 recently hitten the market with a price tag of about €800/$912, the global price for Honor Magic 2 is not known yet, while OnePlus 6 will cost €559/$559. Even though I still do not know the price tag of Honor Magic 2, I want to award it for its innovation and decree it as the winner of this comparison.

The phone comes in Emerald Green, Pink Gold, Black, Twilight and Midnight Blue color options.

I have the latter one. Even though I wanted to get the Twilight color, the blue model looks just gorgeous. I also had a chance to check out the black color option that looks nice and clean.

The Mate 20 Pro carries a ridiculously high price tag of about 1000 EUR here in Europe but it does offer a ton of premium features.

The Mate 20 Pro is a true powerhouse as it ships with the latest Kirin 980 chipset, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage which is expandable via the Nano Memory – the new type of memory cards introduced by Huawei. Innovation in this department is great but a lot of users would love to see a more conventional microSD card slot.

At the first glance, the Mate 20 Pro is yet another flagship phone that has a familiar design – glass on the front and rear, a metal frame and display with the notch. However, this is one of the most innovative phones of 2018 since it packs a lot of features we haven’t seen on other devices.

Also, the phone looks a lot different than the last year’s Mate 10 Pro and this year’s P20 Pro. By the way, this is the Morpho Aurora color of the P20 Pro. It would be nice if Huawei released the Mate 20 Pro with this color finish later on.

First of all, the backplate of the phone uses Hyper Optical Pattern design which is said to be more durable, easy to grip and fingerprint resistant. In practice, it’s really nice to the touch and it indeed attracts fewer fingerprints than conventional glass. It’s still quite slippery, though.

The 6.39″ (1440 x 3120px) HDR OLED display has the notch but you can hide it if you don’t like it.

The screen is super sharp and vibrant thanks high resolution. In addition, I like the color reproduction and I had no issues seeing it outdoors due to great brightness output. Despite a huge panel, the phone is fairly compact due to slim bezels on each side. Also, it’s really comfortable to hold the device in one hand.

One of the highlights of the phone – in-display fingerprint scanner. Well, it takes a bit more time to set it up but it works really well. It may be just a tad slower to unlock the phone but it works 10/10 times. Well done, Huawei, I hope other manufacturers will implement this feature soon.

In addition, Huawei improved the face recognition feature and it is now called 3D Face Unlock. There is an IR laser system inside the notch that contributes to excellent face unlock feature performance. I can see a massive improvement over the P20 Pro in terms of speed and accuracy. Also, this feature works well in low light.

On the back, you can find an upgraded Leica camera setup that now consists of regular, telephoto and wide-angle cameras: 40 MP, f/1.8, 27mm (wide); 20 MP, f/2.2, 16mm (ultrawide);8 MP, f/2.4, 80mm (telephoto).

On the front, you can find a beefy 24MP selfie shooter. We will talk about image quality in just a bit.

The phone also an LED notification light and IR blaster. However, there is no headphone jack but the sound quality via the supplied adapter has been excellent. Just like most of the flagships, the Mate 20 Pro is IP68-certified for water and dust resistance.

A lot of consumers roasted the P20 Pro for not having a wireless charging feature but the Mate 20 Pro has it and the device takes it to another level. First of all, the new Mate provides 15W of power output. What’s more interesting is that the device works as a wireless charging pad, which lets you charge other phones. I know that many will say this is a gimmick but I love innovation and I personally use this feature with my Galaxy S9+… that has kind of average battery life.

The Mate 20 Pro has a dual stereo speakers system. What’s interesting is that the bottom firing speaker is implemented in the USB-C port. This has never been done before and I applaud the Huawei for being the first to do that.  The sound quality is really good overall as it is balanced and clear.

HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

Great specifications of the Mate 20 Pro assure excellent gaming performance. In fact, the new Mate is the first Android phone that uses a 7nm CPU.

I played quite a few 3D games on the highest graphics settings to push the hardware to its limits and there was no stutter, no lag and the graphics looked nice. In addition, the phone did not get hot even after 30 mins of gaming.

The Mate 20 Pro is also really fast and snappy on the daily basis thanks to the EMUI 9.0 that is based on the Android 9. Two integrated NPU’s alongside 7nm processor are here to assure the best user experience in terms of speed and responsiveness.

Besides all the features and customization options, the user interface has a new control system that gets rid of the navigation bar and it is based on swipes. It took me just a couple of hours to get used to it and I love it. If you don’t like it, you can always use more conventional navigation methods. The user interface is very different from the stock Android but if you follow my channel, you know that the EMUI has grown on me as I’ve been using the P20 Pro since the official launch.

I can’t say I need all the features but it’s always great to have plenty of options to choose from. Most importantly, the Mate 20 Pro is ridiculously fast and fluid even after installing plenty of apps. Flagship-grade performance.

The highlight of the camera app is the ability to switch from telephoto and wide-angle cameras very quickly. There are plenty of camera modes but my favorites are auto, night and the pro mode that allows you to adjust a few image settings.

I have to tell you that it is really awesome to have so many camera lenses on a phone. Regular, zoom and my favorite 16mm wide-angle lens usually take really nice and detailed pictures and you can capture the same scene from a different perspective. I took almost all pictures side by side in auto, wide angle and telephoto modes and I uploaded them to my Facebook page in case you want to see more camera samples.

The pictures taken in auto mode look nice, sharp and detailed. I also like the colors and dynamic range is decent. The only complaint is that you cannot use zoom or wide angle lens in full 40MP. That’s why I used the default 10MP mode to take most of the shots. In addition, I could only test the camera on a cloudy day, meaning that the lighting conditions were not ideal.

Portrait shots usually look really nice as the object or subject is nicely separated from the background with almost no artifacts and the bokeh looks creamy. You can also take super macro pictures which is another standout feature of the Mate 20 Pro. The main lens can focus up to 2.5cm and the results are really good.

Low-light image quality is really good too even though some shots have a yellow tint and images taken with the telephoto lens could look better.

However, if you use a dedicated night mode, you can take one of the best low-light pictures on a phone. Just like the P20 Pro, the Mate 20 Pro allows you to take long exposure shots without a tripod and the results are simply amazing. This is arguably the best night image quality I’ve seen on any smartphone.

Selfies look nice. They are sharp, detailed and the colors are quite accurate. Selfie portrait shots look nice too as there no severe artifacts around the subject and pictures will look nice on social media. You can also change the background blur effects and you may have already seen that if you follow me on Instagram.

4K video quality has improved dramatically over the P20 Pro. It is now super smooth and stable thanks to the hybrid stabilization system (OIS + EIS). There is quite a lot of detail and sharpness too. However, there is some jello effect going on and video using telephoto cameras does not look great. Keep in mind that the phone runs on a very early software build and I’m sure Huawei will improve that because the powerful hardware is here.

1080p selfie video looks great as it is smooth and stable. Finally, the sound recording quality is good.

BATTERY LIFE

The Mate 20 Pro has a massive 4200mAh battery that has been performing extremely well. In fact, the new Mate probably has the best battery life on any flagship smartphone.

I could get 9 hours of screen-on time (SOT) under heavy usage of the phone, which is really impressive. If you use the phone just for the basic stuff, you can expect to get over 12 hours of SOT.

Another example: I unplugged the phone at 8 AM, used it quite a bit for taking pictures, reading news and social media, used max. screen brightness setting a lot and … the phone still had 73% of the battery 9.30PM. This is a simply amazing result and it’s certainly the best battery life flagship smartphone I’ve ever had.  

What’s even more impressive is that the Huawei introduced a super fast 40W charging tech that allows you to charge the phone’s battery up to 70% in just 30 mins. In other words, you can fully charge the phone in under 1 hour with the supplied super fast charger.

CONNECTIVITY

The Mate 20 Pro offers ultra-fast 4.5G network speeds, excellent signal reception, great call quality, super fast Wifi, and dual-frequency GPS that I found to be very accurate for both driving and walking. Also, there is NFC and plenty of sensors on board.

CONCLUSIONS

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is an expensive phone but it offers plenty of innovative features and it might be one of the most complete smartphones the money can buy at the moment but there are a few caveats to consider.

I love the design, great build quality, sharp display, great overall performance, one of the best and versatile cameras, insanely good battery life, plenty of connectivity options and the phone is really comfortable to hold in the hand.

I also love Huawei for implementing plenty of innovative features like world’s first 7nm CPU, an in-display fingerprint scanner, the speaker that is embedded in the USB-C port, reverse wireless charging, 40W super fast charging, the lens that is capable of 2.5cm minimum focusing distance and the new Nano Memory standard.

The downsides of the Mate 20 Pro include the lack of the headphone jack, not really impressive video quality using zoom camera but that may be improved with the future software updates since the phone still runs on an early software build.

Other than that, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a true flagship smartphone that is just loaded with features, it has a ton of power and it is easily one of the best smartphones of 2018, despite a hefty price tag. In fact, this is my new daily driver for a reason and that says a lot as I’m usually very picky with each gadget I use.

Huawei decided to tow the line of  Apple by including a 3D Face Unlock technology on its latest flagship Mate 20 Pro. The device can be unlocked using an in-display fingerprint sensor and the 3D face recognition technology.  Tech blog Android Pit has reported a recent discovery that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro3D face recognition can be unlocked by a person with some resemblance to the original owner of the phone. 

According to the report, the review copy that was received was being passed around in the office, apparently for everyone to catch a glimpse. But interestingly, a second person who with a slight resemblance to the original user was able to unlock the phone using the Face unlock feature. Repeated tests showed that the feature isn’t very secure. A second Huawei Mate 20 Pro unit was used for the test and the result was still the same thing. Although Huawei had issued a disclaimer about the insecure nature of the 3D Face Unlock, we don’t expect it to open so easily despite both persons having similar looks. Even in this case, there are some key features separating both persons although they are both full-bearded and have short hair.  First, the two men have different skin colours, different contours, eye colour. Also, one of the men uses glasses while the other one doesn’t.

It must be noted that both copies of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro use the same software version, with build number 9.0.0.113 (C432E10R1P16). In that case, the easiest explanation that can be adduced is that it could be a software glitch and should be something an update should fix. Since both units are earlier models, the same problem may not be on the commercial units.

Huawei has announced its latest flagships – the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. Like previous generation models, the two phones are strikingly different.

Mate 20 Specs

The Mate 20 has a 6.53-inch 2244 x 1080 RGBW DCI-P3 HDR LCD display with a water-drop notch and an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The display has up to 820 nits of brightness and has a low power consumption. It also has a screen-to-body ratio of 88.08%.

The Mate 20 is powered by the Kirin 980 – the first 7nm SoC in the world. The new chipset brings a bunch of improvements and its dedicated dual NPU brings more than 150% increase in performance over last generation’s. The phone has 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The Mate 20 has triple rear cameras which were co-developed with Leica. One is a 16MP ultra-wide angle 17mm lens, another is a 12MP wide-angle 27mm lens and the third is an 8MP 2x telephoto 52mm lens.

It has a 4,000mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, an IP53 rating, and even has a 3.5mm audio jack. It runs Android Pie out of the box.

Mate 20 Pro Specs

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a 6.39-inch 2K+ (3120 x 1440) curved OLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Its 86.90% screen-to-body ratio is smaller than the Mate 20’s.

It is powered by the Kirin 980 which is paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. The Mate 20 Pro has a nano-memory card slot like the Mate 20, making them both the first phones to support the new memory card size.

Like the Mate 20, it also has triple rear cameras but in a different configuration- a 40MP f/1.8 wide-angle sensor, a 20MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle sensor and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto sensor with OIS. The cameras boast a number of interesting features such as Super HDR, AR features, macro photography and low-light photography.

The front camera is a 24MP sensor and it works with a 3D face unlock system to keep your phone secure. The face unlock system is safe enough for transactions. It also has a 3D model scanning feature which allows it to scan objects which can be used in AR mode.

The Mate 20 Pro has an in-display fingerprint sensor and Huawei claims it is 30%. faster than that of the previous generation. Huawei has bumped the protection of the Mate 20 Pro to IP68, so you can dunk your phone in water for a limited time and not have to worry.

The Mate 20 Pro has a 4,200mAh battery, a little bump from that of its predecessor. The bigger battery isn’t the only new thing. Huawei wants you to be able to charge your phone in less time, so the Mate 20 Pro supports 40W SuperCharge fast charge technology.

With this, owners can charge their phone from empty to 70% in just 30 minutes. Huawei says the fast charging is TUV Rheinland certified as safe. The Mate 20 Pro also supports 15W wireless charging and is the first device to support wireless reverse charging. As Huawei has shown in the image above, you can charge your friend’s iPhone XS Max with your Mate 20 Pro.

The Mate 20 Pro will be available in five colors – Classic Black, Twilight, Pink Gold, Midnight Blue, and Emerald Green.

Well, the facts are yet to be verified as Kirin 980 is not officially available for the public.

Huawei Kirin 980 powered Mate 20 has managed to score 3390 pts on a single core test while gained 10318 pts on a multiple core test. The new chipset has managed to score pretty well than its predecessor Kirin 970. It has also outclassed the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 in terms of performance if we compare it with the Geekbench’s single core and multiple core tests. In similar a kind of analysis at AnTuTu benchmarks, Kirin 980 scored 356918 pts which is a way ahead of the Snapdragon 845 powered Galaxy Note 9 and Xiaomi black shark’s 280000+ pts.

The company’s Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu has said that the new Kirin 980 will have dedicated NPU unit for better AI capabilities, powerful GPU and Cortex-A75 high-performance processor cores.

Huawei Mate 20 specs

Huawei is going to power its upcoming flagship with the Kirin 980 processor coupled with 6/8 GB RAM and 64/128/ 512 GB of internal storage. It will feature a triple camera module on the rear side of the device as seen at the IFA 2018. It is expected to carry a 6.53 inch AMOLED display with a notch on the top featuring an aspect ration of 19.5:9. There will be a 4000 mAh battery to power up the device for a whole day with an ability of fast charging.

Let’s wait for the official launch on October 16 before concluding about the Kirin 980 and Huawei Mate 20.

Huawei‘s upcoming Mate 20 flagships may likely come with several new features, both on its design and hardware, that would set it apart from its predecessor. One of such new features is a powerful wired charging technology that is more powerful than SuperCharge. In addition, Huawei will also include support for wireless charging on the Mate 20 Pro. At present, wireless charging is available only on the Mate RS Porsche Design.

A couple of FCC documents have now revealed the power rating of the wireless and wired chargers. The FCC filing which is believed to be for the Mate 20 chargers shows the wireless charger will have a 15W power rating. The rating matches that of the fastest Qi wireless chargers on the market right now. In addition, the wired charger will be capable of delivering up to 40W of power with a massive 4A/10V output rating. That is obviously a giant leap over the Super VOOC charger released by OPPO which has a 22.5W rating. It is also going to be faster than OnePlus’ DASH charging technology.

At IFA 2018 Huawei confirmed that the new Huawei Mate 20 series will be officially unveiled on October 16 in London: almost a month and a half from now. Meanwhile, its Lite version has been already announced and several leaks have started to surface online. Now, a known YouTube channel called Concept Creator has published a concept video showing the handset from every angle and revealing one of the most innovative and beautiful designs of 2018. Note that this is not the official look of the upcoming flagship, but the video is based on the most reliable leak and pieces of info surfaced in the past couple of months.

According to the concept video, Huawei Mate 20 will have a full borderless design with no chin and a waterdrop notch containing the front camera only. Bezels will not be the thinnest you have ever seen on a phone, but they will be quite narrow and, most importantly, all of them will sport the same thickness, adding to its symmetry. Above the front camera, there will still be some space for the earpiece, but the fingerprint reader will be placed on the back.

So, even this year we won’t likely see an in-display fingerprint reader on the standard version of the Mate 20, but it may be exclusive for the Porsche Design variant (which is still unconfirmed). Talking about the rear side, we can clearly see a glass panel (the frame is made of metal), as well as a triple camera setup placed at the center in a 2×2 matrix (one spot is occupied by a circular flash LED). On the lower part of the phone, there is a speaker grille, a USB-C port to charge the device and a microphone, while at sec 0:30 in the video we can briefly see a 3.5 mm audio jack on the upper part.

Huawei may launch the fastest wireless charger on the planet alongside the Mate 20 this year. An image showing the base of a Huawei wireless charger has surfaced online and it shows a few details of the charger, key being the maximum power output.

The image which was posted on Weibo shows the Huawei wireless charger has model number LZ80 with Qi wireless charging support. However, the most important info is the charging output which is a whopping 20W. That is much higher than that of the newly announced Samsung Wireless Charger Duo which has a maximum charging output of 7.5W.

Currently, there are a bunch of third-party wireless chargers with support for 15W maximum output but even if you buy any of these chargers you have to have a phone that can charge at 15W. There is no confirmed phone that charges above 10W wirelessly. Samsung‘s Galaxy S9 duo charge at 9W, higher than the iPhone X which charges wirelessly at 7.5W. UMI says its Z2 Pro supports 15W fast wireless charging but no one has confirmed it.

While Huawei’s upcoming charger will definitely be the fastest charger when it launches, it remains to be seen if the Mate 20 will be able to charge at 20W wirelessly. Even if it doesn’t charge at 20W but charges at 15W, it will be the second phone to be able to do so assuming UMI‘s claims are true.

Huawei is prepared to launch the next-generation Mate-series smartphones, which includes Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 Lite. Now, the Huawei Mate 20 Lite is available for purchase in Poland, which is the most affordable variant of the three.

The smartphone comes with a bigger 6.3-inch Full-HD+ display with 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio, offering a pixel density of 409ppi. This time, the company has opted to offer a notched display, resulting in a higher screen-to-body ratio of 81 percent, compared to the 76.5 percent in its predecessor.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the company’s own Kirin 710 chipset, which was recently launched. It is Huawei’s first 12nm chipset which should offer a significant improvement in power consumption and performance compared to the 16nm Kirin 659. The chipset consists of four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. The GPU is an ARM Mali G5 which is said to be 1.3 times better than that of the Kirin 659 and 1x more energy efficient.

The processor is coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, just like the Mate 10 Lite. Previous reports suggested the 6GB RAM variant as well, which could be available in other regions. We’re also expecting a microSD card slot for storage expansion up to 256GB.

The Mate 20 Lite comes with upgraded camera configuration. On the back side, the phone features a dual camera sensor — 20-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor, placed vertically in the top-center position. There’s a dual-camera setup on the front side too, having a 24-megapixel primary snapper and a 2-megapixel secondary shooter. It also supports Face Unlock feature.

The phone also comes with a fingerprint sensor placed just below the camera module on the back side. Coming to the connectivity, the Dual SIM phone now comes with NFC support. The company has also replaced the micro USB port with the USB Type-C port. Further, it now comes with support for dual-band Wi-Fi — 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

In terms of software, the phone is running on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box with the company’s own EMUI 8.2. It also comes with the GPU Turbo, which enhances the phone’s performance. The phone is fuelled by a 3,750mAh battery and support fast charging technology.

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite will be available in three color options — Black, Gold, and Blue. It is now available for purchase in Poland for starting price of PLN 1,599, which roughly converts to $436. In Poland, the company is also bundling the Huawei AH100 Smart Scale for free (worth ~$41)  along with the purchase of Mate 20 Lite.

Since the disclosure by Huawei that it would be launching the Hisilicon Kirin 980 chipset at IFA Berlin 2018 on August 31, the media has been buzzing with news surrounding the Mate 20 series. The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are expected to be the first smartphones that will be powered by Kirin 980 chipsets. The duo is expected to be unveiled along with the Mate 20 Lite within a short while. TheMate 20 Lite on its part will be powered by the Snapdragon710 chipset. We’ve spotted the renders of all three models which we bring to you in this article for us to know what to expect design-wise from the trio.

The Mate 20 renders were created by the guys at XDA Developers while that of the Mate 20 Pro was done by Ben Geskin. Both renders are said to be based on leaked details about the models. The Mate 20 comes with a water drop notch display similar to what OPPO used on the R17. While the Mate 20 Pro will feature a wider notch on top of its display. The rear design of both flagship Mate 20 models looks almost similar. The most spectacular feature the triple camera setup and the arrangement of the lenses on both models. The camera sensors and LED flash are housed in a single square-shaped housing. What differentiates the Mate 20’s rear design from that of the Mate 20 Pro is the presence of a fingerprint sensor on the Mate 20 whereas the Pro model doesn’t have. The absence of a fingerprint sensor on the Mate 20 Pro is suggestive of the presence of on-screen fingerprint sensor. The device is also expected to come with 3D Face Unlock.

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite renders also shows the presence of an iPhone X-like notch on top the full-screen display. That means all three models will have the notch design with the Mate 20’s being the water drop type. At the rear, the Mate 20 Lite packs a dual camera setup arranged vertically at the middle. The LED flash is located at the left side of the sensors while at the bottom is a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The Mate 20 Lite design is similar to that of the Mate 10 Porsche Design released last year. It should be noted that the Mate 20 series final design may be different from these renders but the differences may likely be minor.

Huawei, which is now leading the Chinese smartphone market, is preparing to launch its new flagship smartphone — Mate 20-series, which includes Huawei Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, and Mate 20 Lite. In case you are wondering what these devices will be running on — Android Oreo or Android Pie, we now have an answer.

According to the Eurasian Economic Comission (EEC), which certified the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro with model numbers  LYA-L29 and HMA-L29 respectively, both the devices will be running the latest Android 9.0 Pie operating system out-of-the-box.

However, the Mate 20 Lite, which has not yet been certified by EEC, could come with the older Android Oreo operating system, as revealed through the recent benchmark listing. Apart from the Mate 20-series devices, another device has also been certified — Huawei Y9 (2019), aka JKM-LX1, which will Android 8.0 Oreo at launch.

Both the smartphones — Huawei’s Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, which will be running Android Pie out-of-the-box, will have a layer of the company’s own custom interface EMUI 9. In terms of specifications, the devices are expected to be powered by HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor, which could be the first 7nm chipset in the market. The Mate 20 Lite, on the other hand, will come with Kirin 710 chipset.

The devices are also expected to come along with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The Pro variant could also come with 8GB RAM model. The Mate 20 could feature a 6.28-inch AMOLED display and pack 4,200mAh battery.

Some rumors are making round suggesting that the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 Pro will come with an under-display fingerprint sensor, similar to what we’ve seen on Vivo NEX and Xiaomi Mi 8. Huawei recently launched its P20 series smartphones, changing the naming pattern to the increments of tens instead of ones. Now, the company seems to have adopted the similar naming pattern for its Mate series flagship smartphones as well.

The China-based company has filed a trademark application for numerous names, including the Mate 20, which confirms that the upcoming Mate series flagship will be called the Mate 20 and not Mate 11, which will be the successor of the Mate 10 series launched last year.

Along with filing the trademark for Mate 20, the company has also trademarked Mate 30, Mate 40, etc. which goes all the up to Mate 90. This also hints at the company’s long-term plans for the Huawei Mate series smartphones.

Earlier, Huawei had filed applications for the names of Huawei P30 and P40, confirming that the company has already planned for the next two generation of its P-series flagship smartphones. However, the latest applications are in contrast, suggesting that the company has plans of Mate-series devices until 2025, which we are speculating based on the company’s current launch timeline.

Currently, Huawei is expected to launch the Mate 20 series smartphones in October or November this year and it is reported that the series will consist of three smartphones, just like the Mate 10-series. Other than that, very little is known about this upcoming smartphones.

However, some reports have indicated that the larger Mate 20 Pro could come with a big 6.9-inch display and is also expected to come with the triple-camera module on the back side, similar to the P20 Pro. For the regular Mate 20, Huawei is expected to stick with the dual-camera setup and a 6.1-inch display panel.

One of the features we expect to trend in phones this year is the under-display fingerprint scanner. Vivo’s X20 Plus UD is the first phone to launch with it and the Vivo X21 has a UD variant too. Reports from Taiwan says the Huawei Mate 20 Pro will also launch with an under-display fingerprint scanner.

Sources say the manufacturer’s second major flagship phone which will launch in the second half of the year will come with Qualcomm’s own under-display fingerprint scanner.

Almost a year ago, the chip manufacturer released plans for its under-display fingerprint scanner scheduled to launch in commercial devices by Summer 2018.

Qualcomm’s fingerprint sensor is said to be three times more expensive than regular capacitive sensors but is actually thinner at 0.44mm. It can also work under glass up to 800µm thick (1200µm according to Qualcomm’s own infograph from last year) unlike a capacitive fingerprint scanner that works with thickness between 200µm and 300µm.

It is also reported that we may not see the iPhone X‘s Face ID sensor replicated in Chinese phones as the sensor cost as much as $60. This will significantly drive up the final cost of the phone. It is also said that the technology requires lots of work with respect to software and hardware integration.

Another reason is that locally manufacturers may infringe on patents especially for Chinese phones that are sold in other markets. So, the plan is to launch phones with the same face unlock security as Apple’s Face ID locally first. This will help gauge reception and reduce risks of failure. While other models sold outside China will feature under-display fingerprint scanners.

This year, Huawei will be making a huge jump in the naming of its main flagships. Its upcoming P-series flagship which should be called the P11 will launch as the Huawei P20. It turns out the same will happen to the Mate series as well.

It was reported earlier that Huawei wants to keep the naming uniform on both of its major flagships hence its decision to change the Plus model of the P-series to Pro.

A new leak has now revealed that the Mate series will also be getting a name change. The leak comes from a Weibo user by the name @lumisky.

According to him, the next Mate phone will be called the Huawei Mate 20 (and Mate 20 Pro) and not Mate 11 (and Mate 11 Pro).

The leaks not only reveal the name of the next Mate phones but also their specs alongside those of other Huawei (and Honor) phones set to launch this year.

Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro

According to him, the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will come with the new Kirin 980 SoC. The Mate 20 will have a 5.9” 2K display while the Pro version will come with a 6” 1080p panel (?). Both will have 4GB/6GB RAM, and 64GB/128GB of storage but the Mate 20 Pro will have an additional 6GB RAM + 256GB version too which may be the Porsche Edition variant.

For optics, the Mate 20 duo will have an 8MP front camera and a 12MP+20MP combo on the rear.

With respect to price, the Mate 20 is said to have a ¥3899 tag for the 4GB version and ¥4499 for the 6GB RAM. The Mate 20 Pro gets a higher ¥4899 tag for the 4GB model, ¥5399 for the 6GB+128GB model, and ¥8999 for the 6GB+256GB version. Both phones will launch in October 2018.

Other phones mentioned in the leak are summarized below:

Huawei Nova 2 Lite

The Nova 2 Lite will arrive this month with a 5.6” 1080p display. It will be the first phone to come with Hauwei’s new Kirin 670 chip. There will be 4GB+64GB and 6GB+64GB variants with a ¥1999 and ¥2299 respectively.

Huawei Nova 3 and Nova 3S

The 3rd generation Nova series won’t arrive till May. While there is a significant upgrade from the Nova 2, there isn’t much when compared to the Nova 2s.

The Nova 3 will have a 6” 1080p panel, a kirin 960 processor, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage and 6GB RAM with 64GB/128GB storage.

It will come with quad cameras – two on both sides but the image provided only shows the secondary front camera (2MP) while the rear cameras are a 16MP 6 2MP combo.

Price starts at ¥2699 for the 4GB model, jumps to ¥2999 for the 6GB+64GB model, and ¥3399 for the 6GB+128GB model.

Huawei will release the Nova 3S in December and it will pack nearly the same specs save for the display which has a 1200p resolution and the chipset which is the Kirin 970. Price will be the same as that of the Nova 3.

Enjoy 8, Enjoy 8 Plus, and Enjoy 8S

The Enjoy 8 Plus will be the first to arrive in April with a 6” display, Kirin 670 and up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. A single 8MP camera graces the front while a 13MP+2MP combo are on the rear. Price starts at 1499 and maxes at ¥1999.

The Enjoy 8 comes next in July with a 5.5” 720 screen, the Kirin 670, 2GB/3GB RAM and 16GB/32GB storage. It will have an 8MP front camera and a 12MP shooter on the back. The 2GB model will sell for ¥899 and the 3GB variant will have a ¥1099 price tag.

The Enjoy 8S will be launched at the end of the year with a 5.7” 1080p screen. The Kirin 670 is the chipset of choice once again. The memory configuration is the same as that of the Enjoy 8 Plus. It also has the same camera configuration but throws in a second 2MP sensor for the rear.

Price is the same as that of the Enjoy 8 Plus.

Honor 10 and Honor 10 Lite

The Honor 10 arrives in June with a 5.7” 1080p display. A kirin 970 is paired with 4GB/6GB of RAM and storage comes in 64GB and 128GB variants.

It will have an 8MP selfie camera and 12MP+20MP dual rear cameras. The 4GB model gets a ¥2299 price tag, the 6GB+64GB model will sell for ¥2699, and the 6GB+128GB will go for ¥2999.

The Lite variant comes 6 months later with the same display but the Kirin 670. It will have 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM variants and pack dual cameras on both sides.

It will also sell for much less, starting at ¥1299, ¥1599, and ¥1899 for all three variants.

Honor V10 Play and Honor V11

Just before the V11 launches in November, Honor will release a Play variant of the V10 which is basically the same device as the Honor 10 Lite but with a 6-month early release date. Pricing is also the same.

The Honor V11 will pack a 6” 2K display, a Kirin 970, and up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It will have dual 12MP rear cameras and a single 8MP selfie camera.

The 4GB variant will sell for ¥2799, the 6GB+64GB will retail for ¥3299, and the 6GB+128GB will have a ¥3699 price tag.

Other devices mentioned in the leak include the Honor Play 7 and Play 7A which will both come with a Kirin 650; and the Honor Play 8X.

All these info are unconfirmed but they are not far fetched. Some of the device specifications may change and even some may be cancelled. Nevertheless, we advise that you take it with a pinch of salt.
