Starting this November, Huawei is officially rolling out the stable release of its latest and greatest HarmonyOS 3 OS upgrade to the brand’s flagship device users in China.

According to the HarmonyOS software development team’s official Weibo account, the stable update will be available to Huawei’s latest releases as well as the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro 5G smartphones, which were released 3 years ago back in 2019.

The full list of devices eligible to upgrade from HarmonyOS 2 to HarmonyOS 3 is as follows:

Huawei Mate 30

Huawei Mate 30 5G

Huawei Mate 30 Pro

Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G

Huawei Mate 30E Pro 5G

Huawei Mate 30 RS Porsche Design

Huawei Mate Xs

Huawei P40

Huawei P40 4G

Huawei P40 Pro

Huawei P40 Pro Plus

Huawei Nova 9

Huawei Nova 9 Pro

Huawei Nova 10

Huawei Nova 10 Pro

In addition to the stable release rollout announcement, Huawei also shared that it has opened applications for its public beta programme for HarmonyOS 3.0 to Huawei MatePad 10.8-inch, Huawei MatePad Pro 10.8-inch and Huawei MatePad Pro 5G 10.8-inch users, as well as an early access closed beta programme for Huawei Nova 6, Nova 6 5G, Nova 7 5G, and Nova 7 Pro 5G users for Huawei fans who cannot wait to experience the latest HarmonyOS 3 features before a stable release.

HarmonyOS 3.
The new HarmonyOS 3 upgrade brings several next-generation software updates that range from decently cool to life-changing. One particular highlight is that in HarmonyOS 3, HarmonyOS devices don’t need to be on a shared Wi-Fi network for seamless interconnectivity to work, the devices can now sense each other. One example is a Huawei tablet next to a Huawei phone will be able to let you answer calls and will display SMS messages as if they were the same device.

It is part of Huawei’s strategy to provide a versatile OS with great adaptability for a whole gamut of applications.

The user interface of the Harmony OS 2.0 is EMUI 11, which is adaptable to both Harmony and Android. In addition, this OS, fully developed by Huawei, supports Android apps, so everything from the App Gallery should work.

Editor’s Pick: OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G Hands-on: Premium in the Right Areas

Some related posts on Weibo from people running HarmonyOS is that it is not based on Android, as previously suspected.

There is not so much to see. Apart from how Android apps are fluid. I doubt that they are native apps.
However, what could make Harmony OS so fast to running android apps?
OpenHarmony, the open-source core component of the operating system, is hosted on Gitee, which is seen as China’s version of Microsoft’s GitHub. Harmony OS 2.0 is also part of the OpenAtom Foundation, with Huawei a major-grade donor. Other donors include Tencent, Baidu, and Alibaba. The OpenAtom Foundation mirrors the Open Handset Alliance, for the Android OS collaboration and development.

HarmonyOS 2.0 beta has already been launched on some devices and many more may come on stream thereafter. Honor, which has become independent of Huawei, is weighing its options and has not ruled out using the HarmonyOS.

HarmonyOS is designed to seamlessly integrate various smart devices to implement fast connection and a whole raft of activities between the devices. The design ensures that services can be seamlessly transferred among the devices to produce a smooth all-round experience.

HarmonyOS uses distributed technology to make application development possible on different device platforms in an efficient manner. In addition, the HarmonyOS deploys a component-based software design to fit itself to any particular device forms on the basis of their individual characteristics.

While not the best, the audio scoring is still in the top margins in the list of all the smartphones that have been tested. According to the firm, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G excels in audio recording but suffers slightly in the spatial sound fields. In other words, its audio playback capabilities caused the drop in the score while the recording aspects received praise specifically.

Editor’s Pick: Redmi K30 Pro to feature ‘Stacked Motherboard’ design, crams in 61 components per sq centimeter

In terms of recording, certain aspects like Timbre, volume levels, artifacts, and even dynamics received notable scores. Although, the background noise was a problem during recording tests. On the other hand, the playback tests also saw artifacts receiving a positive rating, however, the spatial in particular received a low score. The reason for the drop was due to the single speaker unit on the side, which caused an uneven audio spatial balance.

Notably, the recording score was the highest ratings ever given out by DxOMark. This makes Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G’s audio recording one of the best in the entire world. In terms of overall audio tests, the device offered a good bass response as well although the rest of the playback could be improved upon. DxOMark ratings are comprised of various tests and hours of evaluation. So, the Mate 30 Pro 5G receiving such a high score is commendable.

Just like every time a new flagship is official, we are here for a specs comparison. Here, we decided to compare Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S20+ and Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G: if we exclude the expensive and top-tier Galaxy S20 Ultra, they are the most powerful and expensive devices from the main three hi-tech giants in the Android smartphones world from the latest flagship lineups. Let’s highlight the differences between them and find out who is the best.

Design

In each case, you get a simply awesome design. Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20+ sport a punch-hole display, while Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G has a notched display but extremely curved bezels allowing to get rid of physical keys thanks to a side touch technology. Samsung Galaxy S20+ and Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G are waterproof, while Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro is not. Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G has a wide notch, but also a higher screen-to-body ratio. Further, you can find a 3D facial recognition system inside that notch. Samsung Galaxy S20+ is the only with an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner (the others have an in-display fingerprint reader).

Display

We have no doubt about the fact that Galaxy S20+ boasts the best display. first of all, it is the only with a Quad HD+ resolution, so it provides a higher level of detail. Further, it comes with a higher 120 Hz refresh rate. And it even has a new generation Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with outstanding image quality, as well as the HDR10+ certification. Right after, we got the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro with a 90 Hz display sporting a 180 Hz touch sampling rate, HDR10+, and high DCI-P3 coverage.

Hardware/Software

The best hardware is provided by the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and the U.S. variant of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ (not the European one). They both come with a Snapdragon 865 chipset including an integrated 5G modem, up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage. Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G has an inferior Kirin 990, but it is still an amazing flagship when it comes to performance. All run Android 10 out of the box, but they are customized by different user interfaces. With Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Galaxy S20+ boasting the same hardware department, software optimization will be decisive.

Camera

On the paper, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro wins the camera comparison with a 108 MP quad camera department including a telephoto sensor with 10x hybrid optical zoom, a portrait lens, an ultrawide sensor and a 108 MP main sensor with a bright aperture and OIS. We are yet to test the Samsung Galaxy S20+, so we can not give you a definitive verdict yet. Our judgments are only based on the specs on the paper since both Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Galaxy S20+ just became official.

Battery

All of these devices feature a huge 4500 mAh battery, so we do expect a great battery life and no big differences between them. What really differs is the charging speed. Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro has both the fastest wired charging technology and the fastest wireless charging technology with 50W and 30W powers, respectively. Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G comes right after with 50W and 27W, while Samsung Galaxy S20+ is way slower with 25W and 15W.

Price

Samsung Galaxy S20+ 5G starts from €1,099/$1199, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro will cost about €660/$715 in China, and Huawei Mate 30 Pro is currently available for less than €1,000/$1100 globally thanks to online street prices. Overall, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20+ look slightly superior to the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G due to their better hardware, display and more. Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro has better cameras than Samsung Galaxy S20+, while Galaxy S20+ has a better display and, unlike the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, it is waterproof. Further, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro should launch globally at a more affordable price.

The listing has ranked the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G smartphone as the “Smoother Smartphone” of 2019 with a score of 174.84. On the other hand, the company has listed HydrogenOS or OxygenOS from OnePlus as the “Best UI of the Year” 2019.

As for the smoothest performing smartphone, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G’s combination of Kirin 990 5G SoC and EMUI 10 is indispensable, says the company. Followed by Mate 30 Pro 5G is Nubia Red Magic 3S and OnePlus 7T Pro in the second and third spot.

Other smartphones in the list includes Honor V30, Oppo Reno Ace, Realme X2 Pro, Meizu 16s Pro, Vivo NEX 3 5G, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G, and Xiaomi’s Mi 9 Pro 5G, making the company’s Top 10 list.

Now, coming to the user interface, OnePlus’ HydrogenOS (Chinese version of the OxygenOS) has been named the best. The user interface is very much similar to the native Android operating system interface and offers very smooth experience.

The company says that the design concept for the OnePlus Hydrogen OS has not changed in these many years and is said to be the most stable user interface that have come up in the recent years.

Apart from the Hydrogen OS, the list also includes Joy UI, Nubia UI, EMUI, Smartisan OS, ColorOS, FunTouch, MIUI, Flyme, and One UI. Although EMUI 10 is not ranked about the top three, it has played a major role to make Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G as the smoother smartphone of the year.

MasterLu says that the newly launched EMUI 10 has been optimised and upgraded in various aspects, thanks to the powerful artificial intelligence algorithms. The company has also made major changes to its design language, make it more suitable for youth.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G 8GB + 128GB model is priced at 6,399 yuan which roughly converts to $909. When launched, the company had announced two color variants for the device — Vegan Leather Orange and Vegan Leather Forest Green.

The smartphone is powered by Kirin 990 5G, a 7nm + EUV processor. It not only has a built-in 5G modem but its NPU chip has two big cores and one small core which are overclocked while the regular Kirin 990 has one big core and one small core.

The Mate 30 5G and Mate 30 Pro 5G each have a total of 21 antennas, 14 which are for 5G, more than double the 6-antenna design of other 5G phones. Both 5G phones come with support for both SA and NSA 5G dual-mode, adapting 5G / 4G / 3G / 2G frequency bands of the three major domestic operators.

This flagship smartphone series is apparently doing extremely well in its home country. The company recently reported that it has already sold over a million units of the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro since the phones went on sale in China on September 26. This is pretty impressive considering they achieved it in less than a week.

Apparently, Huawei managed to reach this goal in the span of a three hours, as Richard Yu made the announcement during the opening of a Huawei flagship store in Shenzhen. Including the online orders, Huawei was bringing in CNY 500 million a minute, implying a rate of 100,000 sales per minute. Now those are some pretty big numbers.

It’s noteworthy that the Mate 30 series comes without support for Google apps and services. While it may be a big deal in other markets, it isn’t so in China where most Android phones don’t come pre-installed with Google Play Services.

Now, the company has revealed that it managed to sell 100 million units of the smartphones per minute during the sale, which lasted from 10:08 AM till 10:15 AM.

The Mate 30 5G comes in two variants based on memory configuration – 8GB + 125GB version with a ¥4999 (~$706) price and the 8GB + 256GB version priced at ¥5499 (~$777). On the other hand, the Mate 30 Pro 5G 8GB + 256GB version is priced at ¥6899 (~$975) while the 8GB RAM + 512GB version is priced at ¥7899 (~$1116).

Both the smartphones are powered by the company’s own Kirin 990 5G 7nm + EUV processor. It not only has a built-in 5G modem but its NPU chip also has two big cores and one small core while the regular Kirin 990 has one big core and one small core. Its cores are also clocked higher than the standard variant.

Further, both the devices have a total of 21 antennas each where 14 are for 5G, more than double the 6-antenna design of other 5G phones. Both 5G phones come in Vegan Leather Orange and Vegan Leather Forest Green color options.

EDITOR’S PICK: Huawei is rolling out EMUI 10 open beta to 8 devices internationally, including Mate 20 series

The Huawei Mate 30 series is apparently doing extremely well in its home country. At the start of this month, it was reported that the company has already sold over a million units of the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro since the phones went on sale in China on September 26. This is pretty impressive considering they achieved it in less than a week, and that’s not even the end of it.

Despite the ban on Huawei from the United States, the company’s flagship devices are doing pretty well. Last week, He Gang, President of Huawei’s Consumer Business and Mobile Product Line said that the sale of flagship Huawei Mate 30 series is expected to reach 10 million units by the end of this year, before the Spring Festival.

Additionally, he has also revealed that the company’s total smartphone shipments are expected to be around 240-250 million for the current year. However, the company has revealed anything related to the sales forecast of the Huawei Mate X smartphone. He said that at this stage, the company is hoping to learn and understand the customer experience with the foldable smartphones.

Did you ever wonder whether you should spend more to buy a 5G-enabled smartphone or stick to 4G for a few years more? It mostly depends on the zone where you live and on your connectivity-related needs. But if you are one of those advanced users who need a 5G phone, you currently have several choices. After Samsung with the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G and Huawei with the Mate 30 Pro 5G, even Xiaomi launched a 5G-enabled flagship in 2019: it is the Mi 9 Pro 5G which even carries a pretty affordable price if we compare it with other 5G phones. Here you will find a specs comparison analyzing their specifications.

Design

The Horizon display of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G makes its design simply amazing. It is a panel with extremely curved sides which makes you forget the wide notch. Thanks to the curved bezels allowing the presence of a side touch area, Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G does not have any physical key, and this makes it even more attractive. Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G is a very big phablet and for this reason, it is not comfortable for everyone, but it still comes with a very elegant and innovative design. The punch-hole display makes the bezels very narrow and the overall design is very minimal. Special features: while Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G supports a 3D facial recognition system, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G has the S Pen.

Display

The best display belongs to the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G: not only it has the biggest panel, but it even carries the highest resolution: Quad HD+ with 1440 x 3040 pixels. It is also the only device of this trio to support the HDR10+ standard which guarantees a better performance with multimedia content thanks to richer colors and a wide dynamic range. And it even supports the S Pen with Bluetooth integration which can be used for handwriting, drawing and as a remote controller.

Hardware/Software

Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G wins the hardware award since it sports the most powerful processor and it has the fastest performance. It is powered by the Snapdragon 855+ chipset and it comes with up to 12 GB of RAM, which is the perfect couple for every advanced activity. The second place goes to Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ which carries a different chipset depending on the region (either the Snapdragon 855 or the Exynos 9825) paired with 12 GB of RAM. Note that Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ has Android 9 Pie out of the box, while its rivals already come with Android 10. The 5G connectivity is better on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G as the Kirin 990 chipset is the first one with an integrated 5G modem and it can reach up to 6.5 Gbps of download speed thanks to mm waves.

Camera

Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G is the absolute winner when it comes to cameras. It is equipped with a rear quad camera including two 40 MP sensors, 3x optical zoom, OIS, and a 3D TOF camera. But it loses when it comes to selfies: there, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G is a lot more satisfying. If you need a top camera phone, just do not go for the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G, it lacks OIS and it does not differ so much from the Mi 9.

Battery

Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G has the biggest battery and we believe it will last more not only for this reason, but also because it has a very efficient chipset built at 7nm+, and just a Full HD display, unlike the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. It even has a very fast charging technology and reverse wireless charging.

Price

The starting price of Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G is about €900/$990, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G starts from €1200/$1300 and Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G costs just €600/$658. At the end of the day, I define Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G a slightly more advanced device for power users due to its better display and the support to S Pen, but Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G offers a better camera experience and likely a longer-lasting battery. Note that this comparison was only based on the specs on the paper as we have to wait for all the devices to hit the market in order to test them thoroughly. Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G loses the comparison (except when it comes to hardware) but it has a higher value for money.

Huawei has made a variety of cases for the Mate 30 series and they are available in multiple colors to suit your style and mood. Below are the various cases available for the phones:

Silicon Case

The silicon case is made using a new liquid silicon process. It is skin-friendly and soft and has a microfiber lining inside. There is extra protection at the four corners of the case.
While the official cases are actually cool and stylish, its the third-party cases (above) that we are most excited about as they find innovative and funny ways to use the Mate 30 series’ halo ring camera design. Photos of these third-party cases have surfaced on Weibo and we absolutely adore them.

Do tell us which one of these cases (official and third-party) is your favorite in the comment box.
