Teasers of the Mate 40 have been coming out in bits. The latest teaser comes in form of a video released by Huawei’s terminal official Weibo page. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-mate-40-1.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-348303" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-mate-40-1.png?x10805" alt="" width="599" height="460" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-mate-40-1.png 599w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-mate-40-1-300x230.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-mate-40-1-80x60.png 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-mate-40-1-547x420.png 547w" sizes="(max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px" /></a>The teaser video is accompanied by the text &#8211; &#8220;Master assists, the second becomes the master. October 22, # Huawei Mate40# advanced smooth. ” The video itself is that of an interstellar space combat game. Some careful netizens found that as the frame number of the game in the lower-left corner becomes 90, the spacecraft equipment in the game is upgraded, which should imply that the Mate 40 series will upgrade the entire system to a 90Hz screen. This should further improve the fluency and should be an upgrade over the Mate 30 which came with 60Hz refresh rate.</p>
<div class="su-note" style="border-color:#e5e5e5;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><div class="su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim" style="background-color:#ffffff;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick:</strong> <strong><a title="Carl Pei leaves OnePlus; reported to be starting his own venture" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/13/carl-pei-leaves-oneplus-reported-to-be-starting-his-own-venture/" rel="bookmark">Carl Pei leaves OnePlus; reported to be starting his own venture</a></strong></div></div><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-mate-40-2.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-348289" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-mate-40-2.png?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="337" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-mate-40-2.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-mate-40-2-300x169.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>Flagship phones have improved beyond 90Hzto 120Hz and even 144Hz on gaming phones. Thus, while 90Hz may not offer the most fluent display, it offers some improvements over 60Hz. We can&#8217;t even say if the top-end Mate 40 Pro will top at 120Hz. That is a possibility as Huawei won&#8217;t want to lag behind.</p>
<div style="width: 696px;" class="wp-video"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');</script><![endif]-->

<p>The mate 40 is expected to feature the 5nm Kirin 9000 chipset and will utilise a curved screen. A recent teaser also points to the presence of octagonal rear camera design. The phone is tipped to have 66W fast charge support and will run on EMUI 11 but don&#8217;t expect GMS on board.</p>

Ahead of the launch, Huawei&#8217;s smartphone division head, He Gang, has shared what is likely the first camera sample captured by the Mate 40 camera. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-2.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-347487" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-2.png?x10805" alt="" width="601" height="304" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-2.png 601w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-2-300x152.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px" /></a></p>
<p>The Huawei exec posted a picture of the moon captured at dawn in China. The proximity of the moon and the clarity of the shot is suggestive of a powerful zoom camera onboard the flagship models. Although the main configuration of the camera is still unknown, the device is definitely going to improve on the zoom camera featured on the previous two generations of Mate series models.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-347484" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei.jpg?x10805" alt="huawei Mate 40" width="640" height="640" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/huawei-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p>Huawei gets most of the credits for making moon camera shots trendy for smartphones with zoom cameras. The Mate 40 series is expected to come with upgraded cameras which will likely hold the title of best camera phone for a while after the launch. The models are expected to also sport a 50MP main camera. It is already confirmed to pack a Kirin 9000 chipset, the brand&#8217;s first 5nm SoC.</p>
<p>The Mate 40 series will comprise of the Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro+ and Mate 40 Pro+ Porsche design variant. All the models will vary in their display sizes but will all be powered by the Hisilicon Kirin 9000 chipset built on TSMC’s 5nm node.</p>

A tipster who has dished out reliable info thus far has now revealed that the Mate 40 will be launched on October 22. Apparently, this is the global launch while the launch in China will happen on October 30.</p>
<p>The tipster @RODENT950 on Twitter, apart from indicating that the models will launch in China on October 30, also gave a possible timeline on the device&#8217;s progress with pre-launch teasers tipped to start emerging on October 12. The models will go on presale in China on October 22. Sadly, it is still unclear when Mate 40&#8217;s global sales will commence. From all indications, most regions will have to wait until next year to get the Mate 40 series.</p>

<p>The tipster had earlier disclosed that the Mate 40 series will comprise of the Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro+ and Mate 40 Pro+ Porsche design variant. All the models will vary in their display sizes but will all be powered by the Hisilicon Kirin 9000 chipset built on TSMC&#8217;s 5nm node. As usual, we expect the Mate 40 series to feature a topnotch camera setup which should rank as the best around when launched. Expect the Mate 40&#8217;s camera to upset the current DXOMark camera ranking.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/mate-40.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-347140" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/mate-40.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="1005" height="2048" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/mate-40.jpg 1005w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/mate-40-147x300.jpg 147w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/mate-40-768x1565.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/mate-40-503x1024.jpg 503w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/mate-40-696x1418.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/mate-40-206x420.jpg 206w" sizes="(max-width: 1005px) 100vw, 1005px" /></a></p>
<p>There is still no official word from Huawei about the launch but if these details are anything to go by, we should start seeing some pre-launch teasers from next week Monday.</p>

<p>At present, Huawei doesn&#8217;t have a smartphone that supports 66W power rating but the 66W-rated charger also supports 40W output speeds (10V/4A). This means that the charger will be compatible with the current 40W SuperCharge smartphones from the company.</p>
<p>Of course, we can&#8217;t say for sure if it will be shipped with the Mate 40 but going by precedence, we can conclude that Huawei may likely include it on the Mate 40. Huawei had during the P40 series launch, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/04/09/huawei-65w-gan-charger-launched/">unveiled a 65W dual-port GaN charger</a>. We also expect the mate 40 series to come with faster wireless charging.</p>

That resilience may likely show up on the Mate 40 series which is expected to be launched later this year with what should be a spectacular design. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40-2.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-322995" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40-2.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate 40 Pro" width="600" height="338" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40-2.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40-2-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>The Mate 40 series will traditionally include the Mate 40 Pro and ahead of time, a concept renders of the Mate 40 Pro has surfaced online. The concept render isn&#8217;t anywhere near an official render but created by concept designer TS Designer. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-322994" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40.jpg?x10805" alt="huawei mate 40" width="600" height="338" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>The renders show the flagship will have a dual-screen design which is alien to Huawei smartphone lineup. The secondary display is located at the upper right side of the panel while at the left side, there is a Penta camera setup. The camera seems to include a Telephoto lens with a stamp which shows it will support 100x zoom. Speaking of the secondary display, it looks like one that would display information such as time, battery power, and for previewing pictures taken by the rear camera. The renders even feature a  stylus pen.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40-3.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-322996" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40-3.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="338" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40-3.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/mate-40-3-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>We really don&#8217;t think Huawei would venture into such design considering that models such as the Meizu Pro 7 which used such design didn&#8217;t really fly.</p>

The flagship is still several months from meeting with buyers but Huawei&#8217;s R&amp;D has since commenced research into the upgrades it will feature. While the design may have not been finalised yet, the company is definitely going to launch the Mate 40 with a next-generation Kirin processor. Early details have emerged that the Mate 40 will pack a 5nm chipset. Going by the current-gen Kirin 990, the next version that&#8217;ll be released later this year is expected to be named Kirin 1020.</p>
<figure id="attachment_303805" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-303805" style="width: 600px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/huawei-mate-40-3.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-303805" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/huawei-mate-40-3.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="336" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/huawei-mate-40-3.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/huawei-mate-40-3-300x168.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-303805" class="wp-caption-text">Huawei Mate 40 Concept</figcaption></figure>
<p>The Kirin 1020 chipset is expected to be built on a 5nm wafer manufactured by the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). TSMC is said to have one of the largest foundry factories for 5nm chip production. The manufacturing firm will reportedly commence the mass-production of the 5nm chip in the first half of 2020. Shipment is expected to start in the third quarter of the year as the company starts supplying chips for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/04/10/tsmc-starts-working-5nm-process-infrastructure/">iPhone 12 series</a> and Mate 40 series. Both series are expected to be the first mobile phones with 5nm chips.</p>
<p>TSMC&#8217;s 5nm process will come in two versions- N5 and N5P. Compared with the 7nm process, N5 improves performance by 15%, reduces power consumption by 30%, and increases crystal density by 80%. On the other hand, the N5P performance is 7% stronger than N5, and power consumption has dropped by 15% again. The 5nm N5 version will be mass-produced this year, and the N5P will be mass-produced in 2021.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/kirin-990.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-274799" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/kirin-990.jpg?x10805" alt="kirin 990" width="727" height="613" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/kirin-990.jpg 727w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/kirin-990-300x253.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/kirin-990-696x587.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/kirin-990-498x420.jpg 498w" sizes="(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px" /></a></p>
