This basically adds another premium feel to Huawei’s top flagship phone.

Cameras with Variable Aperture

Over the last couple of flagship series, Huawei has refined the use of variable apertures on its Mate devices and the Mate 70 lineup continues this legacy. The primary camera on all four models is a 50MP sensor that has an F1.4-F4.0 aperture and OIS support (Optical Image Stabilization).

This means that one of the camera sensors is relocated to the top of the camera island.

According to the tipster, all models of the Huawei Mate 70 series will use customized top-level 1.5K panels. He added that ‘some models’ of the series will be equipped with four-equal-depth screens, while the others will equip flat displays that will also be slightly more compact.

He also revealed that the company has worked on an ultrasonic fingerprint solution. There is a chance the series could equip the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. For context. the predecessor packs an under-display optical fingerprint scanner. In addition to that, the entire entire series is expected to pack larger batteries inside, which reportedly use different substrate material and may have a higher energy density. A higher energy density allows devices to pack more capacity without getting bulkier.

Notably, the company is also working on a new tablet, which is expected to be released alongside the Huawei Mate 70 series in November this year. The Huawei Mate 60 series was released towards the end of August last year. Following months of speculation, Huawei has officially confirmed the launch of the Mate 70 series for the fourth quarter of 2024. This places the release window somewhere between October to December. 

The confirmation comes from Huawei Consumer Business Chairman Yu Chengdong, who revealed that the Mate 70 series will be the first to come pre-installed with the stable version of HarmonyOS NEXT.

Huawei launched the HarmonyOS NEXT at the HDC Developer Conference event today. It completely breaks away from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) codebase which means Huawei devices with this version of HarmonyOS will not support Android apps altogether.

The upcoming Mate 70 will be the first to get a stable version of the new OS Following its release, Huawei is expected to roll out the major software update to other devices. The company has already begun Beta testing the OS on the Mate 60 series and a bunch of other devices starting today.

While details about the Mate 70 series hardware are scarce, leaks suggest that the Pro model will maintain the triple punch-hole display design seen in its predecessors, though it’s unclear if this extends to the entire lineup. 

To recall, the Mate 60 Pro features a 13-megapixel ultrawide selfie camera, a 3D ToF sensor, and additional sensors and lasers for 3D face mapping. The Mate 70 Pro is likely to continue using the same set of front sensors.

The rear camera system is another area of focus for leaks. The Mate 70 series might utilize upcoming Omnivision sensors for improved image and video capture. Additionally, the top model in the line could feature a retractable lens similar to the one in the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra.

The Mate 70 series is also rumored to feature a new Kirin chip, though details about it are scarce at the moment.

Huawei Mate 70 series to feature components from domestic suppliers

According to the leaker, the upcoming Huawei Mate 70 is anticipated to mark Huawei’s resurgence in the mobile phone industry, positioning itself as a significant competitor to the expected iPhone 16, scheduled to debut in September of this year. The company is currently deeply engaged in comprehensive preparations to ensure the success of this device, with planned shipment volumes significantly surpassing those of the previous generation, including the “Extraordinary Master” variant (machine-translated, likely referring to the RS Ultimate model).

Similar to Huawei’s approach with the Mate 60 series, the company will heavily rely on domestic production and self-development for the Mate 70 series. Its hybrid camera system will feature a new one-inch primary camera and a large aperture with improved light processing.

The Mate 70 series’ display will showcase a quad micro-curved design. Like the iPhone 16 series, the Mate 70 lineup will have multiple models with small and large screen sizes.
