Huawei Mate 9 series was launched in 2016 and truth be told, that is a long time away. That was before smartphones started adopting the 18:9 aspect ratio and full-screen design. But the device was one popular model and fans of the model still expect Huawei to provide an update for the model. Recently, Mate 9 users signed a petition urging Huawei to release EMUI 10 based on Android 10 update for the model. A response issued by the company on Instagram indicated that the Chinese giant was working on an update for the Mate 9. While Mate 9 users were basking in the good news, it turns out the response may have been generated by a bot.

According to Huawei Central, Huawei has now responded, confirming that the Mate 9 WILL NOT receive the latest Android 10-based EMUI 10 update. The response also included some clarification that the statement on Instagram wasn’t given by an official representative.

Huawei Mate 9 made its debut in 2016 packing a 5.9-inch display, powered by Kirin 960 processor and preloaded with Android 7 (EMUI 5) then upgraded to Android 8 (EMUI 8) and last year it received Android 9 based EMUI 9.1. Looks like users will have to stick with the Android 9 based EMUI 9.1 or upgrade to a newer model like the Mate 30 which runs EMUI 10.

After debuting on the latest Huawei flagships, the new GPU Turbo technology is making its way even to older flagships released by Huawei. Today (August 13), the company has officially started the beta testing of GPU Turbo for the Huawei P10 series and for the Huawei Mate 9 series, excluding the Lite variants of each line-up. It is a closed beta testing phase, so the firmware will be available only for a limited amount of users (200 users with the log version and 2000 users without log version, according to the official Huawei Club forum).

The models eligible for the beta update are Mate 9 Netcom version identified by the model number MHA-AL00, Mate 9 MHA-TL00, Mate 9 Pro Netcom version LON-AL00 (including Porsche Design limited edition), P10 Netcom version VTR-AL00, P10 Netcom Mobile Edition VTR-TL00, P10 Plus Netcom Edition VKY-AL00 and P10 Plus Netcom Mobile Edition VKY-TL00. If you want to take part in the beta testing phase, you must have one of the phones without root permissions. Further, you must have the version 8.0.0.359 version of the firmware.

In order to check it, you can head to the Settings, then choose System, About phone section, Version number, Member Service Registration. If you take part in the beta testing phase, you will not be able to remove the firmware and roll back to the previous version. The only chance you have to get rid of the beta firmware is updating your device to the next version, as soon as the beta testing finishes and it will be released. One of the highlights of the Huawei P20 Pro is its camera performance. Huawei has not only worked hard on the hardware part but also put in a lot of work in the software department.

One software feature of the P20 Pro is its ability to take long exposure shots without the need for a tripod. Usually, you need a tripod to take a long exposure shot because if your hands shake while taking one, the photo comes out blurry.

Using AI image stabilization (AIS), Huawei lets owners of the P20 Pro take long exposure photos without the need for a tripod. The good news is that the feature will also be coming to the Mate 10 series via an update.

The Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro both use the same Kirin 970 processor in the P20 Pro. They also have Leica optics. The update will begin rolling out on May 31. As expected, Huawei has kick-started the Android 8.0 Oreo-based EMUI 6 beta program for owners of the flagship Mate 9. This is coming barely a week after some screenshots of the Mate 9 running on Android Oreo-based EMUI 6 was leaked on XDA Developers. The beta program is only open for users of the Mate 9 and the spaces are very limited – just 250 users needed. If you are interested, you’ll have to download the Beta Friendly User Test app from Huawei’s website, register and then hope you’ll be one of the lucky few that’ll be selected.

The leaked screenshots afforded us the opportunity to have an idea of the features EMUI 6 would pack such as Picture-in-Picture mode. Basically, EMUI 6 will come with features of Android Oreo, most of which we already know since Google announced its latest OS version. It will also look a lot like the current EMUI 5. The new features that would likely be on the EMUI 6 include a screen resolution option in display settings which will let users switch between HD and Full HD resolution mode (720p & 1080p). Also, EMUI 6 looks to be bringing the option of hiding the navigation bar by including a new button which you can place on the navigation bar. That button will add a small arrow to the left side of the navigation bar and with a swipe from the bottom, you get to hide or show the nav bar.

Huawei did indicate that the beta program will end on November 3, which could point to the launch of the Android Oreo-based EMI 6 for the Mate 9 before the end of the year. Of course, we do expect the Mate 10 to launch with EMUI 6 based on Android Oreo.

Huawei P10 and P10 Plus flagship smartphones were unveiled a few months ago and the Chinese firm seems to be working on improved version of P10 Plus. Reliable sources have revealed on Weibo that Huawei P20 would be launching before year 2017 comes to an end as the company has allegedly trademarked Huawei 2 moniker.

Various sources on Weibo have revealed that the Huawei P20 will be enhanced version of Huawei P10 Plus because of which it is speculated to launch before the end of the year. Huawei P20 is speculated to be driven by Kirin 960 chipset and the handset will be made available in 6 GB and 8 GB RAM options. It will be sporting a 5.7-inch Quad HD display that will be delivering a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels.

The display is speculated to be curved on it left and right sides. It will be fueled by a 4,000mAh battery. It is rumored to include dual rear cameras that will be coupled with features like image stabilization and HDR.

Since the Huawei P10 had launched in February, previous rumors had claimed that the Huawei P20 would be coming in Q1 2018 driven with Kirin 970 chipset. However, newer rumors are claiming that it would be featuring Kirin 960 chipset. Since Huawei P20 is supposed to arrive as a flagship phone with greatest specs, it seems unlikely that that the P20 would be launching with Kirin 960 this year.

Huawei is heavily pegged to debut the Huawei Mate 10 flagship this year in October and it is expected to be the first smartphone from the company to come with Kirin 970 chipset. The HiSilicon Kirin 970 chipset is homegrown 10nm SoC from Huawei that is rumored to feature eight cores of Cortex A73 along with Mali-G71MP12.

The Mate 10 is speculated to feature a 6-inch display that will produce a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 pixels as it is rumored to support an aspect ratio of 18:9. It is also rumored to feature 3D sensing camera and the flagship is also expected to offer AR capabilities. Since the Huawei Mate 10 is rumored to break cover in October, it is unlikely to release another powerful phone like Huawei P20 with Kirin 960 to disturb the sales of Mate 10.

Huawei has silently updated its flagship Mate 9 lineup, adding two new, attractive and trendy colours. Turns out the Huawei Mate 9 is getting two new colours which were very popular in the P8 and P9 series, namely, Red Agate and Topaz Blue. Huawei first introduced the two colours on the P9 and P9 Plus which already had a long array of colour options then and records show the two colour options were instant hits. Coincidentally, the P9 and Mate 9, both feature dual Leica cameras.

The two new Huawei Mate 9 Red Agate and Topaz Blue variants are only available on the 4GB + 64GB model and they both are listed to officially go up for sale on Huawei’s official flagship store on Jingdong (JD.com) for 3899 Yuan on May 14 at 10 AM.  With this last additional two colours, the Mate 9 is now available in 8 different colours namely, Gold, Silver, Mocha brown, White, Gray, Black, and now Red Agate and Topaz Blue.

The dust is yet to settle on Huawei‘s decision to use an eMMC 5.1 storage on the P10 and P10 Plus which they attributed to a shortage of UFS 2.1 storage. Huawei had issued several statements both from its CEO and from the company but none seems to douse the furore generated by the issue.

Perhaps, the quell things, the company edited the product page for the Mate 9 and took off the part which states it came with UFS 2.1 flash memory. It later turned out the company was likely trying to play safe by avoiding more controversies because not just the P10, but the Mate 9 was part of the controversy. A Twitter user had revealed that some units of the Huawei Mate 9 shipped with a lesser UFS 2.0 storage. So, they ended up generating more controversy by removing the UFS 2.1 storage detail from the Mate 9 specs page.

The company may have realised its folly and has now included the detail that the Mate 9 features a UFS 2.1 storage. Recall that Huawei, in its defence of the use of eMMC 5.1 flash memory on the P10 stated that the eMMC 5.1 storage did not bring any reduction in the speed of the device because of the P10’s optimisation. But ironically, the product detail states that the Mate 9 comes with “new UFS 2.1 flash memory with data transfer speeds that are 100% faster than eMMC 5.1“. If you ask me, this contradicts the company’s earlier statement but then, you might likely notice this if you’re transferring large files to or from the P10 units using eMMC 5.1 or Mate 9 using UFS 2.0 storage. If not, the Mate 9 and P10 remain two capable flagship devices fired up by the latest Kirin 960 chip.

Earlier this week, there were reports from owners of the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus about the different flash memory speeds on their devices. While some recorded read and write speeds for UFS 2.1, others got speeds for UFS 2.0 and the rest recorded eMMC 5.1 speeds.

Huawei later issued an official statement regarding the matter, explaining that flash memory is sourced from different suppliers, all of which are tested to ensure they meet up with standards. Then the CEO spoke on the matter via his Weibo account and revealed that shortages in supply led to the use of eMMC flash memory in some units. He also added that he didn’t notice any difference in performance while using the Huawei Mate 9 with a UFS 2.1 storage and the Huawei P10 Plus with an eMMC 5.1 storage.

The latest twist regarding the matter is Huawei has modified the info on the Huawei Mate 9′ page and removed the part that says there is a UFS 2.1 storage in the device. Weird right? Why modify the page for the Mate 9 when the affected devices in question are the Huawei P10 and Huawei P10 Plus? Does it mean that there are units of the Mate 9 that don’t have UFS 2.1 flash memories? Or is it a precautionary move for new units of the Mate 9 that won’t ship with UFS 2.1 flash storage? Turns out that there are units of the Mate 9 with UFS 2.0. flash storage and Tweeter user (@yao_yunfan) has provided evidence.

Google announced the first Android O Developer Preview just 3 weeks ago but seems phone manufacturers are trying to stay ahead of the game. The developer preview is officially only available for select Google Nexus and Pixel phones users but Google usually releases the source code to its Android partners in order for them to be able to update their own software ahead of when the source code would enter the public domain.

Despite this known fact, it still is a surprise that Huawei is already testing the Android O builds on its flagship devices. Fans love it when updates hit their phones earlier than later and Huawei would obviously like to catch in on that. Internal testing builds of Android O for the Huawei Mate 9 was recently revealed by a Mate 9 user on XDA forum, revealing that the Chinese company is already working to update its latest EMUI version in order to bring in all the enhancements that Android O has to offer.

As you should know,  developer preview isn’t for everyday use but for developers and this isn’t different. The Mater 9 user noted that it came pre-rooted but it has a number of issues. Applications like Google Play Store does not work except Google Play services are sideloaded.  It is missing all language options apart from Chinese (Mandarin) and English and also does not feature a System Update app or eRecovery, WiFi seems to have some issues working well too, among several other issues. However, a few new things are said to have been noticed on the build such as a new files app and new developer options.

It is not as if the build is expected to be complete, considering that it is likely an internal testing build meant for Huawei engineers to test Android O on their flagships. But it is a cheering news to Huawei phone users because this is a signal that Huawei is already working on Android O for the Mate 9. We can’t be so sure about this, though, because not all the evidential details were not posted by the source.

The Huawei P10 is the latest flagship from Huawei. It was announced at MWC 2017 and so far has gotten mainly positive reviews. The phone was released together with the P10 Plus and both have actually been available for pre-order for about 2 weeks now. However, their prices haven’t been disclosed and interested buyers have to pay a deposit of ¥999.

Both devices will officially go on sale on the 24th of March which is when their pricing details will be known. March 24 is just two days away but a leaked image has revealed the price for the new flagships ahead of the launch day.

The price details were leaked on Weibo by an unknown source and show the pricing for all the storage variants of both phones.

The Huawei P10 will be available in three memory variants: 4GB + 32GB, 4GB + 64GB, and 6GB + 128GB and they will sell for ¥3488 ($506), ¥4088 ($594), and ¥4688 ($681) respectively. The last memory configuration comes as a surprise since the official launch stated that the 6GB of RAM will be exclusive to the P10 Plus.

For the P10 Plus, there is a 4GB + 64GB model priced at ¥4988 ($724) and a 6GB + 128GB model priced at ¥5688 ($826). The prices are pretty high this year and are almost at par with that of the iPhone.

The battle line is drawn, but this is no Shuai jiao contest, neither is it your favorite Wrestlemania or Boxing bout. Instead, this a comparison of the speed of the fast charging technologies featured on the smartphones of the top five global smartphone companies. In case you’ve forgotten, Samsung, Apple, Huawei, OPPO and Vivo occupy the top 5 spots in terms of mobile phone shipments globally for 2016. While Samsung, Apple and Huawei had built formidable reputations for themselves over the years, OPPO rode on the back of its VOOC fast charge technology on the OPPO R9 to help shore up its sales, the result of which is still being felt today. Fellow Chinese co-traveller Vivo also has fast charging technologies which is one of its main selling points.

So, the fast charging feature onboard the Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro, Huawei Mate 9, OPPO R9 Plus and Vivo X9 Plus are put to test, all at the same time and the same battery level (0%) to determine which one actually charges faster. To set the records straight, the Galaxy C9 Pro, Mate 9, R9 Plus and X9 Plus, all have 4,000mAh battery capacity, while the iPhone 7 Plus comes with a 2910mAh battery. We must also point out that the iPhone 7 Plus doesn’t come with fast charging support but then, it is one of the top selling and most expensive smartphones so it squares up against the others.

After 5 minutes of charge (results pictured above), OPPO R9S Plus was able to attain 8% battery capacity while the Huawei Mate 9 got 10%, the highest level of the lot. The Apple iPhone 7 Plus was just at 4%, the Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro at 7% and the Vivo X9 Plus surprisingly was at 9%.

In 30 minutes (results pictured above), the Huawei Mate 9 with its innovative fast charging technology was well ahead at 56%, the R9 Plus and Vivo X9 Plus was trailing at 49% apiece, the Galaxy C9 Pro at 36% and finally the iPhone 7 Plus was only at 19%.

In 60 minutes (results pictured above), the Mate 9 and R9 Plus were both at 89% while the X9 Plus had gotten to 86%. The Samsung galaxy C9 Pro was trailing at 68% and then the iPhone 7 Plus at 38%. Obviously, Apple iPhones don’t come with fast charge support and that really has no effect on sales, but it sure would have made a lot of difference to add that to their selling points.

At 90 minutes (results pictured above), only the Huawei Mate 9 had attained full 100% charge, an applaudable feat. The OPPO R9 Plus was very close by at 98% of charge, the Vivo X9 Plus was also at 98% while the Galaxy C9 Pro was at 95%. The iPhone 7 Plus was still lagging behind at 57% even when it had a smaller battery capacity.

The test allowed the charge time to extend to 150 minutes and in that time as shown above, the Mate 9 and R9 Plus had stopped charging. The Vivo X9 Plus and Galaxy C9 Pro had also reached 100% in 150 minutes, while the Phone 7 Plus was only at 69%.

The test had to be stretched to 190 minutes (pictured above), that is 3 hours and 10 minutes before the iPhone 7 Plus charged up to 100%. That is quite slow, but with an efficient Apple A10 chip onboard, the battery isn’t expected to drain as fast as the others.

From the graph based on the fast charge test results, the Huawei Mate 9 with the steepest curve has the most efficient fast charge technology. This is followed by the OPPO R9 Plus and its VOOC fast charge technology. OPPO and Vivo are from the same parent company, so it is no surprise that the Vivo X9 Plus has almost similar charge pattern. The Galaxy C9 Pro followed closely and finally the iPhone 7 Plus came quite a distance behind the quartet.

Until now, the international and Chinese variants Huawei Mate 9 came with 4 GB of RAM. However, a new variant of Huawei Mate 9 has surfaced online that features 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of native storage.

The new variant has been spotted on several online e-commerce sites. The Chinese online sites have listed it with a pricing of about $800 whereas a Romanian online retailer has listed it for $950.

These are not the official pricing of the device as these retailers are charging a significant premium. The 128 GB Huawei Mate 9 with 6 GB RAM comes in color choices like Gold, Grey and White.

The 4 GB RAM model selling in China has a model number of MHA-L09 whereas its international variant has a model number of MHA-L29. These variants feature 64 GB of RAM. One should be aware of the fact that the new 6 GB RAM model with 128 GB storage is not for Mate 9 Pro, but for the regular Huawei Mate 9.

The new variant only brings extra RAM and storage and there is no change in the other technical specifications of the device. The Huawei Mate 9 features a 5.9-inch AMOLED screen that delivers a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. It has HiSilicon Kirin 960 under its hood.

The rear panel of Huawei Mate 9 is flanked with dual camera module by Leica that includes 20-megapixel and 12-megapixel sensors. The DxOMark rating of this camera is 85. The selfie camera of the phablet is of 8-megapixel. Other specs include Android 7.0 Nougat OS, microSD card slot, fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C port and a mammoth 4,000 mAh battery.

The Huawei Mate 9 and its premium sibling Porsche Design Mate 9 were launched in November 2016. However, it landed in other regions like the U.S. and the U.K. in this month.

In the U.S., the unlocked 4 GB RAM variant is selling for $599 on Best Buy, Amazon, Newegg and B&H. In the U.K., it can be availed through contract by paying as low as £31 per month along with a down payment of £99. The actual pricing of the new 6 GB RAM variant is yet to be announced officially.

Huawei Consumer Business Group made public its expected annual performance figures for 2016. Sales revenue of 178 billion RMB was predicted, 42% up from that of 2015 and was able to ship 139 million units, an increase of 29% from the previous year.

The company has plans of surpassing that figure this year. According to Huawei CGB CEO, Richard Yu, ”In 2017, we (Huawei) will strengthen our supply chain, channels, R&D, services and any other areas required to streamline our operations, improve the efficiency of our decision-making and implementation, drive our internationalization strategy and proactively develop future capacity.”

Huawei achieved a number of breakthroughs in 2016. It’s customized version of android, EMUI is now more refined and deeply integrated with the company’s Kirin processors. Their phones also have better camera performance, thanks in part to their collaboration with Leica on the Huawei P9 and the Huawei Mate 9 models. Both companies have founded a joint research lab called Max Berek Innovation Lab that will focus on development and innovation in areas relating to optical systems, imaging algorithms, and virtual and augmented realities.

Their focus on artificial intelligence has also paid off as the Huawei Mate 9 will be the first phone to ship with Amazon’s AI assistant, Alexa pre-loaded.

The Huawei P9 and Mate 9 are the manufacturer’s only phones to have surpassed 10 million sales even after  the latter suffered supply shortages due to the high demand. Their Honor sub-brand is not doing badly at all. The top of the line right now is the Honor Magic released towards the end of last year, and the dual-camera Honor 6X has received its US launch hoping to surpass the Honor 5X. The Honor 8 has also gotten positive reviews all over, standing as one of the major contenders to the OnePlus 3.

In its bid to become recognized as a global brand, the company signed up top footballer, Lionel Messi as brand ambassador; and Hollywood stars, Henry Cavill and Scarlett Johansson as spokespeople for the Huawei P9.

Huawei is currently ranked as the 5oth most valuable brand by BrandZ and is 72 on the Top 100 global brands by Interbrand.

The Huawei Mate 9 was released last year in Europe first before making it to its home country in China. A spokesperson revealed that it will be heading to US markets soon. But that’s just half of the good news as the source also added that the US version will be getting an Alexa update.

Amazon’s Alexa is having an amazing year already with so many 3rd party manufacturers launching devices with the assistant baked in. An example is the Lenovo Smart Assistant that not only has the AI companion but also shares design similarities to the Echo. Now Huawei is joining the Alexa train not with the Honor 6X that was just launched in the US but with the flagship Mate 9.

This is good news for both parties. First for Huawei, as it will give the Mate 9 a huge boost in sales; and for Amazon, since this is an opportunity for Alexa to be integrated into phones seeing as the Amazon Fire Phone was not a success.

Quite a number of Americans already have Alexa in their homes via the Echo, Tap, and Dot speakers but the Mate 9 puts it in their pockets.

The Huawei Mate 9 has a 5.9-inch display, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage; a 2.4GHz Kirin 960 SoC; dual rear cameras (20MP+12MP) wit OIS, optical zoom, and laser focus; an 8MP front facing shooter; rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a 4000mAh battery with Supercharge.  The Mate 9 also ships with Android Nougat out of the box.

Huawei first used the dual Leica  cameras on the P9 released earlier this year and perhaps buoyed by the successful outing of the P9, the company did unveil its latest Mate 9 flagship sporting the same Leica camera setup. The Huawei Mate 9 even featured the same pixel size on its dual cameras as those of the P9.

For sake of clarity, the Mate 9 sports a 12MP main color sensor at the rear along with a 20MP monochrome lens which is said to deliver only black and white images and is capable of achieving bokeh effect. The rear cameras came with support for 2X optical zoom and 6X digital zoom, as well as Optical image stabilization (OIS), large aperture, four-in-one hybrid focus, 4K ultra-high definition video.

Right now, though, Huawei has pushed a new system update to the Mate 9. The latest update comes with version number MHA-AL00C00B153 and this update brings in some new features to the flagship. The Huawei Mate 9 was officially unveiled along with its premium sibling Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design in the previous month. Early reports suggest that the Mate 9 is already performing quite well in the market. ZOL.com.cn has released Huawei Mate 9 teardown photos to reveal its internal components.

The Huawei Mate 9 teardown images have been revealed the entire dismantling process of the smartphone that begins with the removal of the SIM card tray. Next, the two screws on the bottom edge is removed followed by the usage of a suction cup to separate the display panel from the rear panel.

The fingerprint module is unseated followed by the removal of the dual camera lenses. After this, the inbuilt battery can be removed from its compartment.  After dismantling the Mate 9, ZOL has stated that the Mate 9’s internal work is better than what is present inside the Apple iPhone.

Huawei is speculated to release the Mate 9 in the U.S. very soon. Rumors have it that it will be launched on Jan. 6 through the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 event.

Huawei Mate 9 Specifications, Features

The Huawei Mate 9 measures 156.9 x 78.9 x 7.9 mm and its weight is 190 grams. It has a 5.9-inch full HD display and is powered by the in-house Kirin 960 SoC that has scored 132,000 points on AnTuTu. The 64 GB and 128 GB variants of Mate 9 are respectively packed with 4 GB and 6 GB of RAM.

The dual rear cameras feature two 12-megapixel Leica lenses. Its frontal camera is of 8-megapixel. It is loaded with Android 7.0 Nougat customized with EMUI 5.0 software. Most smartphones with latest software tend to lag soon, but Huawei has claimed that the Mate 9’s software has been optimized to function smoothly for up to 18 months.

It is equipped with a non-removable Li-Po 4,000 mAh battery that comes with 22.5W SuperCharge power adapter (3.5V-5V/5A) for fast charging. According to the official statement, the Mate 9 can last whole day by charging it for 20 minutes and a charge of 10 minutes will provide enough battery juice to watch two movies.

AnTuTu has a tradition of releasing the list of top smartphones benchmarked on its app. We have been covering the top 10 list for the past few months and just now, AnTuTu has released the top 10 flagship smartphones in terms of performance for the month of November. Given that we have seen a couple of new Chinese flagships released in this period, there is no surprise that the list has a few changes.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and the Huawei Mate 9 are the two new additions to the list. Of course, there was the OnePlus 3T launch, as well as the Meizu Pro 6 Plus launch, but we will see them added to this list only in the month of December. This is because this list is compiled by calculating the average scores with data from at least 2000 models. So, despite the Mi Note 2 launching in October, it only made it to the list in November. Similarly, the data for the Xiaomi Mi Mix is still inadequate to be included in this list.

In terms of performance, Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are still on top. The best Android flagship is still the LeEco Le Pro 3, which is a steal at its sub-$350 price tag. The Pro 3 is followed by Mi 5S Plus and Smartisan M1L. The next two in the list are the new additions in November, namely the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 with an average score of 148,352 and the Huawei Mate 9 following close behind with an average score of 146,942. Seeing the Mate 9 in this list clearly shows how much Huawei’s Hisilicon chips have progressed in the past couple of years. AnTutu also noted that Huawei recently removed the temperature control restrictions on the Mate 9’s Kirin 960 via a new update which helped the chip inside to unleash its full GPU potential, helping it improve its overall scores.

The list also clearly shows that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 chipset rules the Android flagship market.

After all, using a 6.4-inch 1080p display on a day to day basis is not an easy task.

But if you are someone who loves big screens, the Xiaomi Mi Mix is probably one of the best-looking phones that you can buy right now. Recent surveys have shown that a good number of smartphone users spends a great deal of time with their smartphones, running into several hours. The biggest casualty of this trend is usually the phone’s battery which is designed to last just a few hours of heavy usage. That is where fast charging technology comes in, to give phones a quick charge resulting in several percentage in just few minutes. The Huawei Mate 9 is touted as having a Super Charge feature which delivers fast charging.

The Mate 9’s Super Charge was recently subjected to test by PCOnline to determine the potency and reliability of the Mate 9’s fast charge technology. The fast charger is configured to support 5V / 2A, 4.5V / 5A and 5V / 4.5A, three output specifications. The fast charge is said to be 50% faster than the Mate 8’s and can achieve up t 58% charge capacity in just 30 minutes.

From the test results, the Huawei Mate 9 was able to charge up to 21% in just 10 minutes. Whereas the Mate 8 was able to achieve 11% in 30 minutes, the Mate 9 reached 57%. In the same vein, the Mate 9 reached 90% in 60 minutes while the Mate 8 was still at 63%.

Another question that might prop up is how much heat would the device generate as a result of the fast charge.  That was also determined as the Mate 9 uses low voltage, high current fast charge solution in order to reduce the heat inside the circuit. The temperature of the device was tested at 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 40 minutes of charging and compared to that of the Mate 8 and the heat generated isn’t that bad.

At 5.9 inches, the Huawei Mate 9‘s screen is highly susceptible to several kinds of accidents that might cause it to break. That is perhaps why the Chinese tech giant offered users free accidental screen replacement for 3 months after purchase.

However, a recent scenario shows us another dimension of the Mate 9 display we thought was fragile. It happened that a Mate 9 owner accidentally got his priced possession slammed by a door at home and the device got some disfiguring. Curiously, the disfigurement didn’t come in form of a broken display screen but an entirely bent device.

The Mate 9 is housed in a metal fuselage which protects the internals but it didn’t protect it in this instance, perhaps due to the level of the impact. The force was so much that the entire device was completely bent at the point of impact, including the panels. Despite that, the display screen remained intact, unbroken but bent as if it is a flexible display. You might want to think this is one of Huawei’s concept device with flexible display if you’re not told.

It is not known if the device continued working or even powered on after the bend.

I do not remember who started the trend of releasing a smaller version of a flagship phone but my earliest memories of that trend comes from Samsung. Their flagships like the Galaxy S3, S4, and S5 all have mini variants which are not only smaller but have watered-down specs. Huawei does the same thing too but uses the word ”Lite”, and in what can be regarded as little or no fanfare at all, they have released the Huawei Mate 9 Lite.

The Mate 9 Lite is the Mate 9 for those on a budget. It has a metal build and a 5.5” 2.5D screen like the Mate 9 Porsche Design and Mate 9 Pro but lacks a 2K resolution, instead it settles for 1080p. There is a Kirin 655 chip under the hood paired with either 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM or 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM.

Huawei has also retained the dual camera setup on the rear. However it is a 12MP + 2MP combo that doesn’t have Leica’s branding. The 12MP sensor has 1.25nm pixels and  PDAF. It does the bulk of the work while the 2MP sensor captures depth information. There is an 8MP shooter in front for selfies.

The Huawei Mate 9 Lite has a fingerprint scanner on the rear, a 3340mAh battery, runs Android Marshmallow out of the box and doesn’t even get EMUI 5.0. While it is too early to say, the chances of it being upgraded to Nougat are slim but might get EMUI 5.0 though. I guess toning down the software is also part of the ”lite” definition.

The Mate 9 Lite weighs 162g and is 8.2mm thick. Pricing has not yet been disclosed but it will be available in gold, gray, and silver.

The Huawei Mate 9 flagship has joined the league of devices that got the tear-down treatment soon after launch. The Huawei Mate 9 teardown comes courtesy of the guys at LaptopMain and it reveals the flagship’s internals in its entirety. Quite frankly, the device is shown to come with a mountain load of screws. For a $775 device, it definitely won’t be a good idea to try this out if you’re not  a professional. However, the internals showed the Mate 9 isn’t laced with lots of tiny parts and so may not be a problem fixing if faulty.

Just to refresh our memories about the Mate 9 hardware, the device packs an HiSilicon Kirin 960 chip along side the Mali-G71 MP8 GPU. The device also features 4GB of RAM, 64GB storage which is expandable, and there is a 4,000mAh non-removable battery onboard as well.

The Mate 9 also has a 20MP + 12MP dual Leica camera setup at the rear with dual tone LED flash, as well as an 8MP front shooter with f/1.9 aperture. The Mate 9 is a dual SIM smartphone comprised two nano-SIM slots. The second nano-SIM slot also functions as the microSD slot.

Well, not until the Huawei Mate 9 was unveiled in China today and it came along with an all new Mate 9 Pro variant together with the Mate 9 Porsche Design. The Huawei Mate 9 Pro follows suit in having almost similar specs with the Mate 9 Porsche Design and also a sleek beautiful design.

Here is an array of amazing hands-on images of the Mate 9 Pro, so you’ll have a close glimpse of the device in these stunning images captured from different angles. You might think this is the Mate 9 Porsche Design we have on display here but it is not. The Huawei Mate 9 Pro looks as beautiful as the Mate 9 Porsche Design but lacks the Porsche branding engraved on the screen of the Mate 9 Porsche Design. The device also comes in four color variants namely amber gold, rose gold, silver and gray.

The Huawei Mate 9 Pro comes with a 5.5-inch curved flexible display with the resolution bumped up to 2K and the fingerprint placed on the front. So here you have it, a Huawei smartphone with front mounted fingerprint sensor.  The device has an all metal body with fine finishing at the front but at the rear the body seems to take some brushed metal look.

The Mate 9 Pro retains the dual camera setup at the rear of same 20MP + 12MP sensors combo. But since the fingerprint sensor is at the home button, there is no rear fingerprint sensor. In addition, the Mate 9 Pro also has on the inside a Kirin 960 processor as well as two storage versions of 4GB + 64GB and 6GB + 128GB respectively, a 4000mAh battery with fast charge support and lots more offerings.

As the device is beautiful on the outside, so also is the interface as the Mate 9 Pro runs EMUI 5.0 based on Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box.

After the grand release of the Mate 9 and the Mate 9 Porsche Design back in Europe a few days back, now it was time for Huawei to release its new models in its home country, China. However apart from releasing the above-mentioned devices, the tech giant also unveiled a China-exclusive model, the Huawei Mate 9 Pro at the event today.

Since two of the models were already released internationally, you must already be familiar with their design and specs. As for the Mate 9 Pro, take it as a Mate 9 Porsche Design variant, without the Porsche branding to inflate the price.

Here are the key differences between the three models.

The Huawei Mate 9 comes with a 5.9-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080p resolution and a rear placed fingerprint sensor. There are six color options for this standard model including mocha gold, champagne gold, silver moonlight, ceramic white, gray sky and bright black.

The Huawei Mate 9 Pro on the other hand, comes with a 5.5-inch curved flexible display with the resolution bumped up to 2K and the fingerprint placed on the front. There are four color options for the Pro variant namely amber gold, rose gold, silver and gray.

Finally, the Mate 9 Porsche design version comes with a unique look, as explained in our international launch coverage, featuring a 5.5-inch flexible 2K display, 7.5mm thin body, and front facing fingerprint sensor. This particular limited edition is only available in black color.

While there were some differences, the basic hardware seems to be the same on all the three devices. They are powered by Huawei’s latest chip, the Kirin 960 octa-core processor with Mali-G71 GPU with support for Vulkan graphics standards. These phones support Huawei Pay and also come with chip level built-in security features. There’s a large 4000mAh battery common to the three models with SuperCharge fast charging that promises quick charging times thanks to 3.5-5V / 5A charging standards. They also support Cat. 12 LTE speeds.

The camera is definitely the highlight of the Mate series, and all three have a 20MP monochrome + 12MP color sensor dual camera module at the back. Other camera features include 2x zoom, Laser Focus, OIS, and dual LED flash. Up front, there’s an 8MP f/1.9 aperture shooter. Coming to the software, the three models will run on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box based on EMUI 5.0 interface.

As for the pricing, the Huawei Mate 9 4GB + 32GB version is priced at 3399 Yuan ($497), 4GB + 64GB version is priced at 3899 Yuan ($570), and 6GB + 128GB version is priced at 4499 Yuan ($658).

The Mate 9 Pro starts at 4699 Yuan ($687) for the 4GB + 64GB and goes up to 5299 Yuan ($775) for the 6GB + 128GB version.

The Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design version is priced at 8999 Yuan ($1316) with 6GB + 128GB.

The Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro will go on sale via major retailers in China from today i.e. November 14. The Mate 9 Porsche Design limited edition model will go on sale on December 15.

The Huawei Mate 9 released a few weeks ago comes in two variants: the standard edition and the curved-screen edition called the Mate 9 Porsche Design. However, we reported that Huawei is going to launch a different model in addition to the two above as a China exclusive.

This new model features the same dual-curved display but lacks the Porsche Design customization. For the sake of clarity, Huawei is calling it the Mate 9 Pro and real images of the phone have been leaked online ahead of the launch tomorrow.

The images were posted on Weibo by @Digitalcrazy and we can’t help but see how closely the front resembles that of a Samsung S7 Edge.

This unit of the Mate 9 Pro has a Champagne Gold coating and a brushed metal design on the back. The camera setup is the same as the other two models but the LED flash now sits atop the sensors and the laser focus module below it.

The antenna lines are more visible and there is a 3.5mm audio jack  at the bottom. The fingerprint scanner has also been moved to the front of the phone.

The Mate 9 Pro will come in three memory variants:

1. 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM edition which will sell for ¥4599 ($674);
2. 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM edition priced at ¥5299 ($777);
3. 6GB RAM + 256GB ROM edition priced at ¥5699 ($835).

The Porsche Design Model will also be available for ¥9888 ($1449) for those who want it.

According to analyst Pan Jiutang, Huawei would release a device even more powerful than the Mate 9 next month. The analyst made this disclosure on Weibo  and even went further to give some highlights of the device’s specs.  The phone will feature Samsung customized four curved screen and would be equipped with a number of sensors as well as capable of achieving artificial intelligence.

Mr Jiutang went further to reveal that the real machine has been seen by insiders and they describe its appearance as stunning. If actually this turns out to be true, Huawei would have succeeded in performing way above our expectations for the year. The company is already positioned to achieve its sales target for the year and now another powerful phone? That’s just awesome.

The Huawei Mate 9 was officially released on Thursday in Munich. The company launched two versions of the device: a 5.9” FHD version with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and a 5.5” dual-curved variant with a 2K resolution, 6GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.

Both of them are pretty expensive. The 5.9” version sells for $775 while the smaller version called the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design is priced at $1547!!!

Although Huawei is still yet to launch the new phones in its home country, China, a source says they will have a cheaper price tag than what they sell for in Europe. This is not surprising as they did the same for the Huawei Nova.

The source says the Mate 9 will be available in multiple versions with different storage options. The prices are as follows:

• Standard Edition with 4GB RAM + 32GB ROM will sell for 3399 Yuan ($503). Available in Sky Gray and Silver Moonlight.

• Standard Edition with 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM will sell for 3699 Yuan ($547). Available in Champagne Gold, Mocha Gold, Ceramic White, and Black Enamel.

• Standard Edition with 6GB RAM + 256GB ROM will sell for 4399 Yuan ($651). Available in Champagne Gold, Mocha Gold, Ceramic White, and Black Enamel.

• Dual-Curved Edition (Non-Porsche Design) with 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM will sell for 4599 Yuan ($680). Available in Sky Gray, Rose Gold, and Silver Moonlight.

• Dual-Curved Edition (Non-Porsche Design) with 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM will sell for 5299 Yuan ($784). Available in Champagne Gold, Ceramic White, and Black Enamel.

• Dual-Curved Edition (Non-Porsche Design) with  6GB RAM + 256GB ROM will sell for 5699 Yuan ($843). Available in Champagne Gold, Ceramic White, and Black Enamel.

Huawei has a big event scheduled to hold later today. It is the official launch of the much awaited Huawei Mate 9 that has been in the news for weeks. After the launch today, we would have confirmed which of the rumours turned out to be true and which were just plain untruths.

The company’s senior vice president, Yu Chengdong, has posted an image of the upcoming phone on Weibo. The gif image teases parts of the phone such as the frame, a section of the screen, antenna lines, the rear and fingerprint scanner.

We can see that the screen of the Mate 9 has a 2.5D glass covering it and that Huawei has used a nano-injection molding process for the antenna line design. The power button and volume rocker are on the right hand side and the fingerprint scanner sits on the rear.

There is still no official mention of a curved variant of the Mate 9 and nobody has been able to provide leaked images of the device. If Huawei does reveal a curved-screen version tonight, then they have done a good keeping it under wraps.

The Huawei Mate 9 will be unveiled in Munich in a little over 24 hours from now, and to whet our appetite sample photos have been released online to give us a glimpse of what Huawei’s second collaboration with Leica can offer.

The Mate 9 is the sixth phone from Huawei this year to sport dual rear cameras. Kicking off the trend with the Huawei P9 (and P9 Plus) which garnered much praise for its wonderful performance, then following it with the Honor V8 and Honor 8. The Mate 9 is expected to be the best of the lot as its rear cameras are a 12MP + 20MP combination, a significant upgrade from the P9 which uses a combination of two 12MP sensors.

The pictures were posted on Weibo by a user with the name @Lee Bruce_Lee and are tagged ”Munich in the morning”. The pictures have gotten positive reviews most especially the first picture.

The rumor mills are still agog concerning the expected Huawei Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro, both of which would likely get unveiled tomorrow in Berlin, Germany. Although we are very certain about the Mate 9 launch, what is not certain is the  Mate 9 Pro as it had featured in just a couple of leaks with no real live renders to back up the claim.

However, we have got another one, a fresh leak detailing what is said to be some of the specifications of the Huawei Mate 9 Pro. From the leaked information, the Mate 9 Pro sports a 5.9-inch 2K double-edge curved display, fired up by the Kirin 960 processor with a huge 6GB RAM in tow. The Mate 9 Pro vis also listed as featuring a massive 256GB of internal storage space and would run on Android 7.0 Nougat pre-installed from factory.

Apparently, the Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro would feature the same dual Leica camera set up with 12MP + 20MP sensors at the rear. Furthermore, the flagship device is said to pack a front fingerprint sensor in addition to the rear mounted one. If true, then it would make the Mate 9 Pro the first Huawei smartphone to have a fingerprint recognition sensor at the front.

We cannot verify the credibility of this information, though. Besides mass producing a device with display as large as 5.9 inches with 2K resolution and double curved edges isn’t an easy feat.

Once again, real live renders of the Huawei Mate 9 have leaked and this time around, the renders are of the device in action. This is coming on the heels of the imminent release of the device scheduled for November 3, just two days away.

The leaked renders were spotted on Finnish website SuomiMobiili and they reveal the device just fresh out of the box. One notable thing that could be observed from the working Mate 9 is the black bother at the edge of the display but it is not very wide. The render shows the Mate 9 bearing striking resemblance with the Mate 8 with just some slight difference.

The leak is that of a flat screen Mate 9, perhaps one of the two versions touted to feature on the Mate 9. The Mate 9 is also touted as featuring a dual-edge curved display version code-named Long Island.

At the rear, the dual Leica cameras could be seen seated at the upper edge of the device, aligned centrally. The dual Leica rear cameras would likely be one of the major marketing tool of the Mate 9 and Huawei has ensured that the Leica footprint is inscribed in between the two rear sensors.

The Mate 9’s LED flash and laser focus module could be seen located at both sides of the cameras. Also, lying under the camera set up is the the rear mounted fingerprint sensor. It’s worthy to note though, that the curved display version is rumored to have a front fingerprint sensor in addition to the rear mounted one.

As a reminder, the Huawei Mate 9 would come powered by a Hisilicon Kirin 960 chipset and would sport a 5.9-inch 1080 pixels display while the curved screen version is saod to have a 2K resolution on its display. There is a 6GB RAM on board on the top version, along with a large storage of 256GB. There is also a base version with 4GB RAM and 32GB as well as 64GB internal storage versions. The device is also listed to run on EMUI 5.0 based on Android 7.0 Nougat OS. The device is also said to pack a 12MP + 20MP sensor at the dual Leica rear cameras.

As the November 3 launch of the Huawei Mate 9 draws nearer, the device as should be expected would remain on the front burner of discussions till it is finally launched. The latest we have got on the Mate 9 is a picture that emanated from Weibo and is said to be a pre-launch page by China Mobile. The picture, which seems to have been grabbed from a smartphone, contains what is likely the main specs and actual render of the Mate 9.

Basically, the pictorial specs listing comes in to confirm some of the specifications we had already known would feature on the device but also bring along some new details. One of the latest detail is the specification of the Huawei Mate 9’s dual main cameras. According to the pictorial listing, the dual cameras would be a combo of a 12MP sensor and a 20MP sensor. Another is that the device would feature a front fingerprint sensor in addition to the one at the rear.

Additionally, the Mate 9 is touted as seeing an upgrade on the fast charge aspect, as it is listed to support 5V / 8A charging output. Perhaps this would form part of the long battery life Huawei teased recently to feature on the Mate 9.

Just a few days to the official launch of the Mate 9, a user on Weibo has leaked real images of the phone and it looks like some of the earlier renders.

The unit is the champagne gold variant. The screen is large and fits the 5.9” or 5.88” description. There is Huawei’s name sitting on the chin and the top speaker is flanked by the front facing camera and the proximity sensor.

The back is where the action is. The dual cameras made by Leica have a vertical setup and are flanked on the left by the LED flash and on the left by the laser focus module. And below the cameras is the fingerprint scanner. The antenna lines are very visible due to their thickness but it isn’t like they make the phone ugly.

In a few days, the Huawei Mate 9 will be announced in Germany, but that doesn’t mean we still won’t be getting details right up to the launch day.

A few days ago, there was a post on Weibo about the screen sizes of the Mate 9 and there was no mention of a curved display, leading people to believe the company will not release a curved variant of the phone. This new poster confirms Huawei Mate 9 will have long battery life as it as it asks the question, “Is Worrying About Your Battery Worth It?”.

Huawei’s Mate series have always featured huge batteries inside, making sure that the large 6-inch display runs for an entire day in a single charge. In fact, if you remember, the Mate 8 got an endurance rating of 103 hours on GSMArena’s battery test, which makes it one of the top flagships with great battery life.
