Former World Footballer of the Year and Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo may be currently using a Huawei mobile phone. A Weibo post by Sina Digital shows a photo of Ronaldo with a possible Huawei smartphone.

The speculations surrounding the post point to the Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design Edition. It is however speculated that the Weibo photo was from 2021 and some netizens believed it could be a non-Huawei phone in the picture. It is also speculated that Ronaldo uses up to eight mobile phones and the Huawei model was specifically for navigation purposes. The other phones, according to unverified speculations, are all Apple products.

The phone was sighted on Ronaldo’s Porsche and the superstar has never hidden his love for Porsche cars. The Mate RS Porsche Design Edition was released in 2018 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Porsche sports car. It coincided with the release of the Porsche 911nGT 3 RS. Huawei had partnered with Porsche to release the anniversary Huawei Mate RS which was customized for the car. It is possible that Porsche offered the customized Huawei Mate RS as part of the package for any purchase of the car.

The smartphone has a 40MP Leica three-camera setup and uses in-screen fingerprint unlocking, in addition to its rear fingerprint scanner. The smartphone was released in black and red color variants and also features face unlocking. The Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design Edition has a 6GB/ 512GB RAM/ storage configuration and has a 12,999 yuan (~$1,803) price tag. Ronaldo became the only player to have scored in 5 consecutive World Cups with his goal against Ghana during the Mundial.

Design

If we exclude the companies’ customizations for the special editions and we only consider the original design, Oppo Find X is undoubtedly the most beautiful and innovative device. Indeed, it is the first phone with a motorized slider and a screen-to-body ratio close to 100 percent without the need of a notch. When it comes to customizations, the one of Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design Edition intrigues me more because of its back made of genuine leather and glass.

Display

The display with the highest quality is the AMOLED panel found on the Huawei Mate 20, with a higher resolution than its opponents and a more accurate color reproduction. It has a bigger notch, but it boasts a 3D facial recognition system. Oppo Find X Lamborghini Edition and OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition feature a similar display quality, but, even though OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition is the only with a notch, I define it better because of its Gorilla Glass 6 protection for the front glass and good DCI-P3 coverage.

Hardware/Software

There are no consistent differences in performances when it comes to these three devices, but Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design Edition has a slightly better SoC: the new Kirin 980 realized with a 7 nm production process which is able to provide a very high speed and higher scores on benchmarks. OnePlus 6T McLaren comes with 10 GB of RAM, but a better chipset is definitely more important. At last, Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design Edition is the only to feature an expandable storage. So I would choose it for its hardware. The software is very nice in each case: Android Pie out of the box with very efficient customizations.

Camera

Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design Edition has the best camera department of 2018. It is the same as Huawei P20 Pro with a rear triple camera and a 40 MP resolution for the main sensor. Until now, no device has been able to compete with the outstanding photo quality provided by this triple camera in every scenario. At the second place, we can definitely put the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition with its f/1.7 aperture for both the sensors of its dual camera, but it is a lot inferior to Huawei’s flagship.

Battery

Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design Edition comes with the biggest battery as well as the longest battery life. OnePlus 6T McLaren is at the second place with its one-day battery life (even more in some scenarios), while Oppo Find X Lamborghini Edition has the smallest battery but it charges faster than each of its opponents: it is able to reach 100 percent of charge in just 30 minutes. I would personally pick Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design because for me battery life is more important than fast charging, plus, Huawei’s flagship is the only smartphone in the market to support wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.

Price

Given that these are special editions, these devices are way costlier than their standard versions. When it comes to specifications, Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design Edition is the best device of the trio and it costs €1600/$1800, Oppo Find X Lamborghini Edition is the less attractive for me (unless you are Lamborghini fans or innovative designs lovers) with a price tag of €1700/$1920, a worse camera and a shorter battery life, while OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition is the one with the best value for money as it costs just €700/$700.

The device has been spotted in the Unified Register of Notifications. Now, legislation of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) restricts importation and exportation of cryptographic devices. Common goods which have cryptographic functions like laptops, mobile phones, routers, certain types of software etc. can only be imported after the customs is provided with so-called Notification. The notification is a document which contains information about cryptographic functions of the products (e.g. authentication, Wi-Fi encryption etc). Namely, it should describe every cryptographic algorithm used by the product as well as the respective key size and cryptographic protocol.

The Huawei Mate RS notification was made public on the EAEU portal on May 22 but the application was made on May 14. This means the Mate RS Porsche Design has gotten the green light to be sold in Russia. Before now none of Huawei’s luxury series has been sold in Russia. So, the Mate RS is the first luxury model that would go on sale in Russia.

As a reminder, the Mate RS comes with a premium design consisting of triple rear cameras and a full-screen display without the notch design present on the P20 Pro. The display is a 6-inch FullView OLED display with a 2880 x 1440 resolution. It has a high contrast ratio of 90000:1 and a 538 ppi. Huawei’s Kirin 970 powers it, paired with 6GB of RAM and for the first time in a smartphone, 512GB of storage. That record has been shattered by the Smartisan R1 which packs 1TB storage. The Mate RS also has a 256GB version. The luxury model has a starting price of 1,695 euros (122,900 rubles). The price in Russia will likely not be higher than that.

While the P20 and P20 Pro adopted the now trending notch display design, the Mate RS did not come with any cut out in its display. Porsche Design’s CEO has now revealed the reason for the notch-less design adopted on the Porsche Design Mate RS and that is because the company (Porsche Design) is against it.

Porsche Design based its rejection of the notch on how it affects a smartphone’s design. While speaking with Digital Trends, the company’s design director Christian Schwamkrug stated that the company things the notch compromises the smartphone’s design. He thinks the notch destroys the symmetry of the screen, comparing it to a picture which is either rectangular or square with a borderline and a clear frame format.

Read Also: Huawei P20 Aurora Launched: Gradient Colors Change Depending On Light Conditions!

This view is consistent with that of many users as expressed in a survey carried out by Android Authority. Many users are also of the view that the notch destroys the symmetry of the screen and that it can get in the way if you are watching videos or playing games. Although Huawei included the option of hiding the notch on the P20 and P20 Pro but that is just a software feature. So, if you are not a fan of the notch design, the Mate RS Porsche Design may not be a worthy option due to its steep price tag. Huawei has slapped a €2095 (~$2599) price on the 512GB variant while the 256GB variant is €1,695 (~$2,103).
