Huawei Mate 60, Mate X5, and MatePad Pro 13.2″ to receive HarmonyOS NEXT public beta starting tomorrow

Huawei has been working on its self-developed operating system, HarmonyOS NEXT, for some time now. After rolling out the developer beta in June, the system is now ready for public beta testing. The Huawei Mate 60, Mate X5, and MatePad Pro 13.2 series will be the first devices to receive the HarmonyOS NEXT 0.0.71 public beta update.

This update includes improved visuals for the system apps and animations. It also adds HarmonyOS native apps.

For those unfamiliar, the HarmonyOS NEXT is independent of Android or it doesn’t support any Android codes or apps. Instead, it uses Huawei’s self-developed OS components like Harmony kernel which is claimed to be 3x more efficient than Linux.

That said, it will be interesting to see how the company manages to boost performance and fluency across its ecosystem with HarmonyOS NEXT, especially when compared to competitors running on Android.

Significant in context, we have already seen the first gaming results for Honor of Kings running natively on HarmonyOS NEXT. While the game is currently under beta testing, the performance already matches what many high-end Android phones deliver.

For those concerned about the app ecosystem, Huawei’s self-developed operating system already has more than 10,000 apps which reportedly meets nearly all use cases. There will likely be more apps going forward as HarmonyOS NEXT rolls out as a stable version and reaches more devices.

Huawei Mate X5 also gets an official liquid cooling case

Last month, following the launch of the Huawei Mate 60 Pro, the company also released official cases for the smartphone. One of these cases was the Micropump Liquid Cooling Shell.

This very same case is now available for the Huawei Mate X5 as well. This makes the Mate X5 the first foldable to have an official cooling case.

The Huawei Mate X5 is the company’s latest foldable smartphone. It is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 9000s chip and offers 5G support as well as satellite communication.

Customers of this phone can now buy the official Micropump Liquid Cooling Shell. This accessory is priced at ¥399, which makes it ¥100 more expensive than the Mate 60 Pro version.

This protective case helps in maintaining the thermals. When the handset’s temperature rises, the case’s piezoelectric micropump starts circulating the coolant, which can be actually seen through a window at the bottom of the case.

The pump gets its power from the smartphone’s battery. The case has a wireless charging coil built-in, which draws energy from the phone’s back.

Despite featuring a cooling technology, the case has a thin form factor. It only comes in a single black color option featuring a blue-colored coolant.

The Oppo group was the first to introduce official cooling cases for smartphones. The Oppo Find X5 Pro’s Ice-Skin Case was the first to hit the market, followed by the OnePlus 10T’s Glacier Mat Case.

Huawei Mate X5 Collector’s Edition repairs are nearly as expensive as a new iPhone 15 Pro

Huawei has released a list of spare parts for its latest foldable smartphone, the Mate X5. The prices are nearly as shocking as the price of the phone itself. In fact, some repairs for the highest-end Collector’s Edition could cost nearly as much as a brand-new iPhone 15 Pro.

For example, a replacement main display for the Mate X5 standard edition costs 5,199 yuan (~US$714), and a new cover display costs another 999 yuan (~US$137). Together, these two parts cost more than the starting price of the iPhone 15 in China, which starts at 5,999 yuan (US$824).

The spare parts for the Mate X5 Collector’s Edition are even more expensive. For those unaware, the Collector Edition is the only variant of Mate X5 to have a 16GB/1TB configuration. Reportedly, a replacement main display for the Collector’s Edition costs 5,599 yuan (~US$769). The most expensive repair is for the motherboard, which costs 7,399 yuan (~US$1,016). This is almost as much as a new iPhone 15 Pro, which starts at 7,999 yuan in China—600 yuan more than Mate X5’s Collector Edition.

Having said that, it’s important to note that these prices apply to out-of-warranty repairs. Huawei offers a Care+ service that can reduce the cost of repairs for the main and cover displays to 499 and 299 yuan respectively, but it does add at least 999 yuan to the price of the phone at retail.

Still, the high cost of spare parts for the Mate X5 is a bit of a concern, especially considering the delicate nature of foldable smartphones. Even a minor drop or spill can damage the display or other components, and repairs can be very expensive. Especially for the buyers when the device becomes out-of-warranty. This is something that potential buyers of the phone should be aware of, especially if they are prone to accidents.

Huawei schedules its Autumn Launch Event for September 25, Kirin 9000s formal announcement expected

Huawei has scheduled a launch conference in China for later this month. The company is calling the event Autumn Full-scenario New Product Launch (translated).

It has been confirmed that many new products will be announced. The conference is headlined with the tagline ‘Mountains and rivers work together to create new life.’

Huawei’s annual Autumn launch event for 2023 will take place on September 25. The conference will begin at 2:30 PM GMT+8 and will be live-streamed on leading Chinese video streaming platforms.

As of now, the telecom giant hasn’t revealed the devices it will announce at this event. However, it says that several products will be unveiled.

According to rumors, Huawei may formally announce the Mate 60 series and the Mate X5 at this conference. Thus, we might get to learn more regarding the HiSilicon Kirin 9000s chip.

The Mate 60, Mate 60 Pro, and Mate X5 are already on sale in China. Whereas, the Mate 60 Pro Plus is expected to hit the shelves in October.

Last Friday, the Huawei Mate X5 was quietly unveiled in China. It is the company’s latest foldable smartphone and the successor to the Huawei Mate X3 from earlier this year.

The Mate 60 Pro received a similar treatment a few back but it was made available for purchase soon after. However, the Mate X5 is up for sale only today, almost a week after its announcement.

When the foldable was listed on the first-party online store (VMall) last week, Huawei did not reveal the price. Now that the device is available for purchase, we have info on all the variants and their pricing.

As a tipster suggested, the Huawei Mate X5 arrives in two versions — Standard and Collector’s Edition. They carry the following price tags.

Huawei has recently introduced the Mate 60 5G and Mate 60 Pro 5G in China. Many Huawei fans felt that the company would hold a launch event to unveil the Mate 60 series. However, instead of hosting an event, the company decided to reveal them by listing the devices on Huawei Mall (Vmall). Initial reports suggested that Huawei might hold a launch event in September to introduce additional devices, including the Mate 60 Pro+ 5G and the Huawei Mate X5 foldable phone. Surprisingly, Huawei has followed the same pattern by directly listing these products on the Huawei Mall without a dedicated launch event. Here is a look at the specifications, features, and price of the Mate X5.

Starting from the front, the Huawei Mate X5 has a 6.4-inch OLED LTPO external display that offers a resolution of 2504 x 1080 pixels, a 20.9:9 aspect ratio, up to a 300Hz touch sampling rate, and Kunlun glass. On the inside, the device features a 7.85-inch foldable OLED LTPO display that produces a resolution of 2496 x 2224 pixels, an 8:7.1 aspect ratio, and up to 240Hz touch sampling rate. Both screens also support a 1Hz-120Hz refresh rate, 10-bit colors, P3 color gamut, and 1440Hz high-frequency dimming. For security, it has a side-facing fingerprint scanner.

There is no information available about the chipset that powers the Huawei Mate X5. It appears that it is also powered by the Kirin 9000s, which is also present under the hood of the Mate 60 series. Also, it is unclear whether the device supports 5G connectivity. It comes equipped with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.

The Mate X5 has an 8-megapixel camera on the front. Its rear camera setup includes a 50-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with OIS support. Like the Mate 60 series, the device runs on Harmony OS 4.0.

The device measures 156.9 x 72.4 x 11.08 mm in the folded state and 156.9 x 141.5 x 5.3mm in the unfolded state. The device weighs around 245 grams.

The Huawei Mate X5 comes in two variants, such as 12 GB RAM + 512 GB storage and 16 GB RAM + 512 GB storage. It comes in shades like Feather Black, Feather White, Feather Gold, Green Mountain Dai, and Phantom Purple. The purple and green variants have plain leather on their backs, whereas the other color variants have glass back.

Huawei is also offering the Mate X5 Collector’s Edition in variants, such as 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage or 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. The prices of the Mate X5 series is yet to be confirmed.

The Mate X5 and its Collector’s Edition are on pre-sale at Huawei Mall with a deposit of 1,000 Yuan (~$136). it is expected to gon sale on Sept. 15. At this time, there is no information about the Mate X5’s global availability.

Last week, Huawei quietly released the Mate 60 and the Mate 60 Pro in China. An HiSilicon Kirin 9000s chip powers these 5G-enabled devices.

As per rumors and leaks, more products from the company will use this new chip. Recently, we learned one of them will be a premium tablet.

Earlier today, a tipster revealed that the company’s next foldable will also house this chipset. He also disclosed the name of the phone and its memory configuration.

Huawei Mate X3

The Huawei Mate X3 is currently the latest foldable smartphone from Huawei. According to a leaker, this device will be succeeded by the Huawei Mate X5 by skipping the X4 moniker.

Chinese brands are known to omit the number ‘4’ in the name of their products as it is considered a bad omen. But Huawei does not follow this norm. If this leak is to be believed, it would be a first for the company.

The tipster says that the Huawei Mate X5 will arrive in standard and collector’s edition. They will be offered in the following memory configurations.
