Congratulations to HUAWEI fans, the Mate X6 global version has finally been launched. Now you can buy it all over the world, except the US. When Mate X5 was a big seller in China, it made HUAWEI the brand that sold the most foldable phones for a while. I’m sure Mate X6 will continue to lead the world in sales, with maybe a little bit of your help.

So in this article, we want to go over three major performance leaps of the Mate X6, watching some of the clips together, should be interesting.

So, the part you just saw simply means that the location of the signal chip was re-arranged, to make the signal stronger. Maybe you guys don’t quite understand why the signal would be stronger if the location changes. I’ll explain it briefly: first of all, increasing the distance between the components will benefit heat dissipation.

After all, no matter what kind of chip it is, it will not work the best at high temperatures. Then, the closer the radio frequency units are to the antenna, the better the signal. This reduces the electromagnetic interference and energy loss. So the signal of the antenna on the right side will be better than before.

This design is said to increase the total area of the RF units by nearly 1400mm, and the utilization of the sub-frame space increases by 32%. The antenna length is increased by 81%, signal strength is increased by 60%.

First of all, that piece of graphene in your phone isn’t big and hard like in the video. Without the help of VC, your phone’s mechanical strength might be insufficient. Graphene is also more conductive than copper, and to avoid the risk of short circuits and interference, it can’t all be used as a heat sink. Lastly, there is the cost issue, as graphene is much more expensive to make than VC.

In fact, as you can see, the cooling system is very effective at spreading the heat evenly throughout the phone, and a reduction of 3.1 degrees Celsius is actually a very impressive result. So for now, copper VC with graphene should be the best answer for heat dissipation.

I have some things to say about this hinge. If you’ve ever used a foldable phone, you’ll know that there’s usually a limit to the angle at which they can hover. Hovering at too much or too little of an angle can cause it to just unfold or close, but that doesn’t happen with the Mate X6.

You see. Even opened to this angle it stops. It won’t close that way either. Although no one would use a phone this way, it indirectly proves that the hinge has been upgraded once again.

The HUAWEI Mate X6 has just been released, we are going to cover it in two articles. In this one, we will talk about the overall design, the performance, the imaging system, and some other system highlights. If you are into some of the hardware and technical stuff, there will also be another article, should be interesting also. Now Let’s get into the first half of the review for the HUAWEI Mate X6.

Design

First of all, HUAWEI always puts some fine textures on the back of the phone, and also, the unique camera module design has been carried over gen after gen for the last couple of years. This variant we have here is called the Nebula Gray, it looks very sophisticated and opens up your imagination. The material at the back is reinforced fiber material, the touch is smooth, and it claims to be extra tough and durable. The camera bump is designed in a balanced way, when the phone is on the table folded, it does not wobble.   

Overall, the phone weighs 239 grams, 9.85mm thick folded, and 4.6mm thick unfolded. The weight and size have not changed much I would say, but it still remains the top one when it comes to these specs.The hinge can hover at extreme angles, although nobody would use a foldable like that, but it certainly shows that the tech behind the hinge has again evolved.

The screens are basically the same size as before, and the specs are the same, with no significant changes. But the inner screen is better anti-reflective, from certain angles, you can see the screen is darker, which means in some scenarios you can be more immersive in watching content. The crease is also very well controlled, you can’t really see it in everyday use. The protective glass and the structure however, have again been tougher, we will talk about it in the other article.

There are also another two colors to choose from, the Nebula Gray is new to the collection, which could be a bit better looking.

Performance

The performance of the Mate X6 has evolved a lot, you can get very good experience in day to day use. It can run some games well, but again, it’s not suitable for running big games. As a matter of fact, almost nobody would play big games on such a device. For some daily use scenarios, it still performs very well, which we will show you later in this article. Next let’s talk about the imaging system.

Imaging

So this time, the camera system is better in many ways, and the new 1.5MP Ultra Chroma camera can help with capturing the real colors of everything, and then work with other cameras and algorithms, to produce the best photos with the most accurate colors.

I did take some photos in a beautiful little town, to mainly test the color consistency in each focal length, where I found that everything looked and felt like Christmas, all these Santa and Christmas trees just remind you again and again that the happiest time of the year is around the corner.

Then I move on to see the color consistency of all the cameras, mainly on the Original mode in the XMAGE system, For example, the red on the boxes, the beige and blue paint on the ground, the colors on these art followers, they all remain accurate and appealing to the eyes. Or the oranges and lemons in the basket, they looks all tasty in the shots under different focal lengths.

And we know that XMAGE has evolved a lot these years, and you can pretty much just press the shutter when you see something attractive. Most of the time, you can take a great photo in the Original mode, then the Vivid mode will add an extra bit of touch to it, to create some vintage feel, then the Bright mode will light up the subject, but be careful in situations like this, sometimes it will be a bit too much.

I was on a mission to see if I can find some red maple there, fortunately I found one, although it’s artificial, it still looks good. I am happy to take the Chinese painting at night, it stands out there quite, waiting for a camera to see it, and in the Vivid mode it looks the best. Overall, I prefer the photos produced in the original mode, you can also comment down below about which mode you would prefer.

For the telephoto camera, the best feature that HUAWEI has a leg in front of others, which is that you can get really close to the subject, and still be able to take micro photos. You can also shoot subject in a good distance, the details are kept well.  

Lastly, the low light filming test between the X6 and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. First I found out that in extreme low light situations, the X6 has better control in 1x and 2x, but once we zoom in to 5x, 4x for the Mate X6 in this case, iPhone still has that edge.

Then the X6 just completely dusted the iPhone, it presented the night way better, and it has better dynamic range, whether in the dark areas like the corners and the sky. Then the light box really tells them apart, X6 really kick iPhone’s butt here, it just blew me away.

So while I was taking these photos and pictures, suddenly I understood why HUAWEI embodied the technical terms in an artistic way, and it is because you really need to get out there and take photos, which will definitely make you love life more.

Daily Experience

So the Mate X6 global version is still with EMUI, jumping in between apps is buttery smooth, and you can have that classic foldable experience in note-taking, dual section in the Apps. The new feature here is the three Apps multi-tasking, you can have one app running at the biggest size, then the other two just stand by at the side, a tap will bring one of them to the front, so this makes multi-tasking very easy. Watching content on this device is also an enjoyment, the 7.93-inch screen, like other foldables, is just really good for watching videos, especially on the go.  

There are also two fun themes, one is the emoji crush, and the other is the air hoops. I will start with the air hoops, I love basketball as you may know. So while the phone is locked, you raise your hand, a ball will hover in the air, you shoot, then score, most of the time if you don’t do it too quickly, the ball always gets in, I mean of course. So this feature is actually utilizing the camera to do motion detection, you can do it both on the outer screen and the inner screen, which is fun. The other is the emoji crush, it’s like all the emojis are cramped into a box, once you move the phone, they will just roll and stake up differently, also an interesting experience.  

The battery capacity is 5110mAh, with 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, I can say that it can last for a day of use without any worry. The battery is actually bigger than last gen, while it’s slimmer both folded and unfolded, which makes me look at the hardware in a new way.

Verdict

This is a true experience and review of the HUAWEI Mate X6 global version. We see the big leap in the overall hardware and design, as well as the huge improvements in the cameras, that’s why you can see that the X6 is confident in showing you the internals. As a matter of fact, you can just peel the film on the outer screen and use it in whatever way you want. Also, the photography system is really amazing, we had a lot of fun taking those photos outside. Well for the system experience, still very good.

Specifications and Design

Two standout models in the collection are the Forged Dragon and the Huang He. The Forged Dragon, based on the Huawei Mate X6, boasts a sleek black titanium body with a unique texture inspired by the ancient Chinese art of multi-layer sword forging. This technique, originating in the city of Longquan, creates a mesmerizing pattern on the device’s surface, paying homage to centuries-old craftsmanship.

Huawei recently took wraps off the Mate X6 alongside the Mate 70 series in China. It is the company’s second foldable smartphone in 2024 after Mate XT Ultimate Design.

As the name suggests, the Mate X6 succeeds the Mate X5 from 2023. It is a book-type foldable phone whose display folds horizontally.

Whereas the previously released Mate XT Ultimate is a first-of-its-kind trifold smartphone.

The Mate X6 brings a few upgrades over the Mate X5. These changes not only make it better than its predecessor but also a strong competitor to foldables from other brands.

Let’s go through the key highlights of the Huawei Mate X6 in this post.

Thinner, lighter, and yet durable

The Huawei Mate X6 measures only 4.6mm when unfolded. This makes it one of the thinnest book-style foldable smartphones on the market.

Even when folded, the device’s thickness is just 9.9mm. Also, it weighs about 239, which is light for a foldable.

The back panel of the phone comes in two finishes: leather and nylon fiber. These materials make it less prone to break when dropped.

Furthermore, the device is IPX8-rated (water resistant) and uses self-developed second-generation Kunlun Glass protection for the external display.

Revamped camera system

Huawei has included an upgraded camera setup with the Mate X6. All three rear sensors use RYYB pixel arrangement.

The primary camera continues to be a 50MP sensor with OIS. But this sensor now supports 10-point variable aperture (f/1.4 to f/4.0).

While the ultrawide unit is upgraded to 40MP from 13MP. Similarly, the zoom camera is now a 48MP 4x telephoto macro shooter instead of a 13MP 5x periscope telephoto snapper.

Anyways, the front cameras for both external and internal screens use the same 8MP sensor.

New chip

The Huawei Mate X6 allegedly houses a new chip from HiSilicon. This SoC is called Kirin 9020.

Most chipsets on the market use an octa-core CPU. However, this new chip from Huawei utilizes a dodeca-core CPU (12 cores).

The said CPU reportedly consists of 2 x 2.5GHz cores, 6 x 2.15GHz cores, and 4 x 1.6GHz cores. It is accompanied by a 4CU GPU clocked at 850MHz.

The performance of HiSilicon Kirin 9020 is close to that of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Other improvements

The Huawei Mate X6 has a slightly higher resolution internal display than its predecessor. Its panel offers a resolution of 2440 x 2440 pixels as opposed to the 2496 x 2224 pixels screen on the older model.

Further, the device houses a tad bit larger 5,110mAh battery compared to a 5,060mAh battery inside the previous model. However, both of them support the same 66W wired and 50W wireless charging standards.

Additionally, the Collector’s Edition of Mate X6 offers support for not only Beidou satellite communications but also Tiantong as well.

Despite ongoing reports suggesting that some manufacturers might abandon their foldable smartphone projects, Huawei isn’t shying away from the foldable market. Today, the company unveiled the Mate X6, its latest iteration of the folding phone series.

While it retains the core folding design, the X6 brings key upgrades, including larger displays, a distinctive rear camera setup, and AI features designed to enhance the user experience.

Bigger and Brighter Displays

The most immediate change is the size bump in both the internal and external displays. The X6 unfolds to reveal a 7.93-inch LTPO 2.0 panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1800 nits. It should now be more immersive to watch videos, do gaming, or tackle productivity tasks. 

The outer display also gets a size boost, measuring in at 6.45 inches with the same 120Hz refresh rate and LTPO 2.0 technology. 

Both displays deliver impressive brightness levels—2500 nits for the outer screen and 1800 nits for the inner—ensuring good visibility outdoors. Additionally, the 1440Hz PWM dimming on both panels helps reduce eye strain, especially during extended use in low-light settings.

Marble Flair and Tough Construction

Huawei has ditched the uniform metal back for the X6, opting for a unique glass cover with a marble-like structure. This texture comes in a “Nebula Gray” shade that shimmers and catches the light in a captivating way.  

However, if the glass isn’t your thing, there’s also a classic plain leather back option.  Color choices remain familiar, with the X6 available in Gray, White, Red, Sea Blue, and Black.  

Durability seems to be a focus area this time around. Huawei claims the X6 utilizes a new “distributed basalt architecture” for increased toughness. This involves a combination of innovative carbon fiber screen support and a high-strength 380GPa material, promising a 65% boost in stiffness. Additionally, the phone adopts “ultra-strong wing aluminum” for the body, increasing overall strength by 37%.

HarmonyOS and AI Shenanigans

The Mate X6 runs on HarmonyOS NEXT, Huawei’s homegrown operating system. While specifics on the software experience remain unclear, the company did showcase a few AI features. 

One interesting addition is the “Airdrop gesture,” which allows users to share media content across devices with a simple hand gesture.  For basketball fans, there’s also an “AI Air Shooting gesture” that enables interactive play with the phone’s AI capabilities – though details on this functionality remain limited.  

Camera System

The camera setup on the Mate X6 looks familiar at first glance. It packs a 50MP super light zoom RYYB main camera with a 10-speed adjustable aperture and OIS. Joining it are a 40MP ultrawide sensor, an infrared sensor, and a 48MP telephoto macro lens with 4x optical zoom. 

Collector’s Edition

Huawei has also introduced a Collector’s Edition of the Mate X6 foldable. While it shares the same core specs as the standard model, the Collector’s Edition differs in terms of RAM/storage and an interesting new feature called triple-network satellite support. The latter enables two-way satellite messaging, two-way calling, and low-orbit satellite internet, although the internet capability is still under testing.

Pricing and Availability 

The Mate X6 comes in two storage variants: 12GB RAM with 256GB storage and 12GB RAM with 512GB storage. The standard model starts at 12,999 yuan (approximately USD 1795). 

The Collector’s Edition comes in 16GB RAM variants with either 512GB or 1TB of storage, starting at 14,999 yuan (approximately USD 2071).

However, since the brand recently launched the Mate XT, the world’s first tri-foldable smartphone, the Mate X6 is expected to receive a lot of attention from phone enthusiasts worldwide.

According to a recent Weibo post by reliable leaker Digital Chat Station, the supply chain for the Huawei Mate X6 is ramping up, indicating increased production orders. This suggests that Huawei is strengthening its position in the high-end, 10,000 Yuan+ (~$1,415) smartphone market. The Mate X6 is expected to be released around November, and there are no competing products anticipated to launch at the same time. The only potential competition is a foldable device (likely the Oppo Find N5) powered by the Qualcomm SM8750, which is expected to be released in Q1 of next year, with most other foldables following in Q2 or Q3.

Oppo Find N5  

Oppo is reportedly working on the successor to last year’s Oppo Find N3 foldable phone. As per reports, the company may adopt the Oppo Find N5 for its next foldable phone, possibly avoiding the number “4” due to cultural superstitions in Asia, and may be branded as the Find N5 instead of the Find N4. It is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2025.

The Find N5 is anticipated to be one of the first foldable phones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite (aka. Snapdragon 8 Gen 4). It will likely feature a 2K+ resolution screen, a 50-megapixel Sony triple camera with a periscope lens, and a 6,000mAh battery, marking a significant improvement from its predecessor’s 4,800mAh battery. The device will boast a thinner, lighter design with enhanced durability and some level of waterproofing, running ColorOS 15 based on Android 15 in China. The device is also expected to have wireless charging.

OnePlus Open 2

This Find N5 is expected to launch in China and other Southeast Asian markets, while it could be rebranded as the OnePlus Open 2 in regions like India and the US. The specifics about its availability in Europe remain unclear.

Vivo X Fold 4

Our recent report revealed an upcoming Vivo device with model number V2429 will debut in the market as the Vivo X Fold 4. According to recent leaks, it will be one of the first foldable phones to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite (aka Snapdragon 8 Gen 4) chipset. The device is anticipated to feature a circular camera module on the back, comprising a triple camera setup with a 50-megapixel main sensor and a periscope telephoto lens.

The Vivo X Fold 4 will sport a silicon battery with an approximate capacity of 6,000mAh and will support wireless charging. It will also boast an IPX8 water resistance rating. When folded, the phone will have a thickness of about 8.x mm, and the fibreglass variant will weigh around 21x grams. As far as the launch is concerned, it is expected to break cover as in Q1 or Q2 2025.

The existing X Fold 3 series includes two models, such as the Vivo X Fold 3 and X Fold 3 Pro, that are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 3 chipsets, respectively. While the existence of the X Fold 4 has been confirmed, there is no clarity whether there will be a Pro variant.  

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7

Samsung has been launching foldable phones since 2019. The brand, which is currently leading the foldable smartphone market, is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in July 2025. At present, it is too early for the rumor mill to leak concrete details about it.

Considering that the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s design closely resembles its predecessors, Samsung may introduce the Z Fold 7 with a new design. With competing brands offering top-notch cameras on their foldable phones, it is likely that the Z Fold 7 will come with an improved set of cameras. The previous iterations from the Z Fold 3 to the Z Fold 6 have featured a 4,400mAh battery. Hopefully, the Z Fold 7 will arrive with an increased battery size.

Huawei, after launching the tri-fold Mate XT, has a launch event scheduled for today, where it will unveil a bunch of new accessories. It seems the company has no plans to slow down its release cycle in the coming months. 

According to the typically accurate leaker Digital Chat Station, Huawei has at least three device families slated for launch in the coming months.

First up in October is the Nova 13 series, the successor to the Nova 12 lineup. We could see four models mirroring the Nova 12’s Lite, 12s, Pro, and Ultra variations. Next, in November, we could see the flagship Mate 70 series. This line is rumored to include three phones – building on the Mate 60, Pro, and Pro Plus models.

Both the Nova 13 and Mate 70 series are rumored to be powered by next-generation Kirin chipsets, the 9010 for the Nova and the 9100 for the Mate. Huawei has already confirmed that the Mate 70 series will be the first to boast the brand new HarmonyOS NEXT operating system.

Finally, the leak hints that November could also be the launch month for the successor to the Mate X5 foldable. The Mate X6 is said to sport an even larger cover screen than its predecessor, making it a true phone replacement when unfolded. It’s also likely to inherit the Mate 70 series’ rumored Kirin 9100 chip and run on HarmonyOS NEXT.

As per tipster Smart Pikachu over at Weibo, Huawei will be updating its X series foldable products in the second half of 2024. While the tipster has not revealed any details or even the name of the device, we expect it to be called the Mate X6.

As for what improvements we can expect, the upcoming foldable will likely offer an improved camera system, an improved hinge, and likely a new processor. Huawei has the option to either go with the Kirin 9010 or the upcoming “super core” chip which is rumored to power the upcoming Mate 70 series. We can take a look at the specs of the Mate X5 to get an idea of what to expect from its successor.

Huawei Mate X5 specs:

The Huawei Mate X5 has a 6.4-inch OLED LTPO external display with a 2504 x 1080 resolution, 20.9:9 aspect ratio, 300Hz touch sampling rate, and Kunlun glass. Inside, it has a 7.85-inch foldable OLED LTPO display with a 2496 x 2224 resolution, 8:7.1 aspect ratio, and 240Hz touch sampling rate. Both screens support a 1Hz-120Hz refresh rate, 10-bit colors, P3 color gamut, and 1440Hz high-frequency dimming. It includes a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The Mate X5 likely uses the Kirin 9000s chipset and may support 5G. It comes with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. The front camera is 8MP, and the rear setup includes a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP periscope telephoto camera with OIS. It runs on Harmony OS 4.0.

The device has a 5,060mAh battery with 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. Other features include dual SIM, NM card slot, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, dual-frequency GPS, NFC, 2D face unlock, USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 1), two-way satellite connectivity, and IPX8 water resistance.
