A research report by IDC for Q2 2018 reveals that the global tablet market declined 13.5%. Notwithstanding, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> still maintained its leadership of this segment with 34.9% market share, followed by Samsung with 15.1%.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S4.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-200651" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S4.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung Galaxy Tab S4" width="662" height="441" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S4.jpg 750w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S4-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px" /></a></p>
<p>The report expatiated further that Apple shipped a total of 11.5 million tablets in Q2 of 2018 representing a 0.9% growth year-over-year while <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> shipped just 5 million units. Chinese market leader <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> came in at the third position with 3.4 million tablet shipments representing a 10.3% market share. It is interesting to note that Huawei has been on the resurgence on all fronts as it had an impressive 7.7% growth YOY. Completing the top 4 is Lenovo with an estimated 2 million tablets shipment and 6% market share.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Lenovo-Xiaoxin-TB-8804F-tablet-PC.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-185168" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Lenovo-Xiaoxin-TB-8804F-tablet-PC.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="640" height="480" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Lenovo-Xiaoxin-TB-8804F-tablet-PC.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Lenovo-Xiaoxin-TB-8804F-tablet-PC-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Lenovo-Xiaoxin-TB-8804F-tablet-PC-160x120.jpg 160w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>

<p>The total tablets shipments globally were estimated at 33 million which is lower than the 38.3 million shipments IDC reported the shipments was for last year. Out of this total shipment, slate tablets accounted for the majority of the market with 28.4 million units which is 14.5% lower than the previous year&#8217;s figure. On the other hand, detachable tablets accounted for the remaining numbers. The market is mainly driven by premium products from Microsoft and Apple and growth has slowed in recent months. That could change soon with the imminent launch of the Microsoft Surface Go, Chrome OS-based detachables, and perhaps a more affordable iPad Pro in the future. The Galaxy Tab S4 released last week also has the potentials to boost the detachable tablet market. Huawei&#8217;s detachable tablets also grew by over 200% in Q2 2018. In all, the market could perform better in the third quarter of 2018 as a result of new tablet releases like <a href="https://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_009558453868.html?wid=1433363&amp;lkid=15141163" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xiaomi&#8217;s Mi Pad 4</a>, Samsung <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/08/01/samsung-galaxy-tab-s4-is-official-with-slim-bezels-s-pen-dex-support-and-powerful-specs/">Galaxy Tab S4</a> and several others. But manufacturers don&#8217;t seem to be too keen on the tablet market.</p>

After <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/02/25/huawei-launches-matebook-x-pro-super-thin-bezels/">unveiling the Matebook X Pro</a> with super-thin bezels, the China-based company has now announced its new high-end Android tablet &#8212; Huawei MediaPad M5.</p>
<p>The company has announced two variants &#8212; MediaPad M5 and MediaPad M5 Pro. While the M5 will be available in two screen sizes &#8212; 8.4-inch display and a 10.8-inch display, the M5 Pro will be available in only one size &#8212; 10.8-inch. Both screen sizes come with curved glass displays, 2560 x 1600 pixels screen resolution and IPS panels.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-175476 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Huawei-MediaPad-M5.jpg?x44794" alt="Huawei MediaPad M5" width="837" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Huawei-MediaPad-M5.jpg 837w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Huawei-MediaPad-M5-300x179.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Huawei-MediaPad-M5-768x459.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 837px) 100vw, 837px" /></p>
<p>Under the hood, the tablets are powered by the company&#8217;s own HiSilicon Kirin 960s processor. This is similar to the Kirin 960 but with a dedicated NPU like the Kirin 970. As of the memory configuration, both devices pack 4GB RAM and offers three storage variants &#8212; 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. There&#8217;s also a microSD card slot allowing users to further expand the storage capacity up to 256GB.</p>
<p>The devices come with an aluminum unibody construction, with four speakers on the 10.8-inch and two speakers on the 8.4-inch. All the speakers are placed on the rear panel and are co-engineered with Harmon/Kardon.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a 13-megapixel camera sensor placed on the back panel and an 8-megapixel front-facing snapper for video calling. It also features a fingerprint sensor which is embedded in the home button. The devices are running on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-oreo/">Android 8.0 Oreo</a> operating system with the company&#8217;s own <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/01/15/huawei-rolls-out-android-oreo-based-emui-8-0/">EMUI 8.0</a> on top.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-175477 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Huawei-MediaPad-M5-Pro.jpg?x44794" alt="Huawei MediaPad M5 Pro" width="1023" height="444" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Huawei-MediaPad-M5-Pro.jpg 1023w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Huawei-MediaPad-M5-Pro-300x130.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Huawei-MediaPad-M5-Pro-768x333.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px" /></p>
<p>The MediaPad M5 Pro also comes with added support for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei/">Huawei</a>’s M-Pen that features 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and support for tilting and shading and can last for about 50 days on a single charge. Further, the Pro model will also support a detachable keyboard and will offer a desktop-type view with expanded file management features.</p>
<p>Connectivity options on the device include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and Bluetooth v4.2. All variants of the tablet will also be available with 4G LTE option.</p>

The MediaPad M5 would be a successor to the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2016/09/01/huawei-unveils-mediapad-m3-8-4-inch-2k-display-kirin-950/">MediaPad M3 </a>which was first launched in 2016. The device <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/01/27/huawei-mediapad-m5-clears-fcc-packing-4980mah-battery/">recently got the nod at FCC</a> indicating a launch in the US is imminent. We have also seen the schematics of the device in a recent leak which suggests there would be a change in design. The Huawei MediaPad M5 has now been spotted on Geekbench and it pulls an impressive result.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mediapad-m3-huawei.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-96387" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mediapad-m3-huawei.jpg?x44794" alt="mediapad m3 huawei" width="728" height="523" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mediapad-m3-huawei.jpg 728w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mediapad-m3-huawei-300x216.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></a></p>

The device will also feature a fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C port, stereo speakers, and Cat. 4 LTE modem. Providing the interface would be EMUI 6.0 based on Android Oreo. The device is expected to be launched anytime soon and was even tipped to drop at the recently held CES 2018. Thus, we cannot rule out an MWC 2018 unveiling even though Huawei is yet to officially disclose if that would happen.</p>

<p>FCC&#8217;s listing usually reveals only a few specifications of the device and in this case, it shows that the model would be fuelled by a 4,980mAh battery and the schematics of the device was also featured on the FCC listing, showing it would have a metal body. The schematics also reveal the presence of hidden U-shaped antenna band, SIM slot located on the right side when viewed from the rear aspect while the volume rocker and power buttons are on the right side. We also take note of a rear camera which is located at the upper left corner, a bit closer to the edge than its predecessors. Thankfully, the MediaPad M5 specifications had leaked in the past so we&#8217;ll have to rummage through our archive to get further details of what to expect.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/huawei-mediapad-m5.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-169752" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/huawei-mediapad-m5.jpg?x44794" alt="Huawei Mediapad M5" width="600" height="360" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/huawei-mediapad-m5.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/huawei-mediapad-m5-300x180.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
