Yesterday, Huawei held a launch event in China. The star of the conference was the Huawei Nova 12 series, the company’s latest upper mid-range smartphone lineup.

All four devices in the series went up for pre-order post their announcement. Within a day, three of these phones are already sold out.

The only model that’s currently available is the most affordable one — Nova 12 Lite.

The handsets that are sold out are Nova 12, Nova 12 Pro, and Nova 12 Ultra. The latter two support 5G connectivity, while the vanilla variant is limited to 4G just like the lite version.

Huawei’s share in the Chinese smartphone market has been increasing ever since it quietly released the Mate 60 series. The newly unveiled Nova 12 series seems to be receiving a similar response from consumers like the Mate 60 lineup.

As Huawei is not known for disclosing units sold like other Chinese brands, we will have to wait for data from research firms. Anyways, the company should restock the phones soon.

The primary highlight of the Huawei Nova 12 series is that it debuts two new HiSilicon chipsets, namely Kirin 9000SL and Kirin 8000. The former is present inside ‘Ultra’, whereas the latter runs the standard and ‘Pro’ models.

As of now, we don’t have details on these chips. Reports say the Kirin 9000SL is a downgraded Kiriin 9000S that powers the Mate 60 series and Mate X5. On the other hand, the Kirin 8000 is paired with a 5G modem inside the Nova 12 Pro but lacks the same for the vanilla Nova 12.

The odd one out is the Nova 12 Lite which houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G SoC with a 4G modem.

Huawei has just announced the latest Nova series of smartphones in its home market of China. The lineup consists of the Nova 12, Nova 12 Lite, Nova 12 Pro, and Nova 12 Ultra. Now, here’s a detailed breakdown of the higher end Pro and Ultra models of the series. So let’s have a look at their specs, design, pricing, and more.

Huawei Nova 12 Ultra & Nova 12 Pro: Design & Display

The Nova 12 Ultra and the Nova 12 Pro feature a curved display on the front, while the rear features the familiar pill shaped camera island. The front and back have rounded corners and curved edges. The Nova 12 Ultra weighs 198 grams, while the Nova 12 Pro weighs 201 grams. Although, the two devices measure equal in width at just 7.68mm.

On the front, Huawei outfits the Nova 12 Pro and Nova 12 Ultra with a tall 6.76-inch OLED display that offers a 120Hz refresh rate and Full HD+ resolution (2776 x 1224). The screen also has a pill shaped camera cutout that houses the two front facing image sensors. Notably, the Ultra model comes with Kunlus glass, which it claims to be “unbreakable“.

Specifications

The Nova 12 Ultra and 12 Pro are quite similar but some of their differences include the chipsets. The former is equipped with the Kirin 9000SL while the latter houses a Kirin 8000. These chipsets support 5G networking and are paired with 12GB of RAM. The Pro model offers up to 512GB of RAM and the Ultra tops out at a sizeable 1TB. The lineup runs on HarmonyOS 4.0 (HongMengOS in China) out of the box.

The two phones are powered by a 4,600mAh battery pack that supports 100W wired fast charging. A notable feature that arrives in the Nova 12 Pro and Nova 12 Ultra is the support for satellite connectivity, which is a common feature for newer high end devices. Other notable features include an in-display fingerprint scanner, dual SIM support, Gesture navigation, face unlock, Bluetooth 5.2, AAC, SBC, and LDAC audio codec.

Camera

The camera system is practically identical on both smartphones. On the rear, the Nova 12 Pro and Nova 12 Ultra has a 50-megapixel primary camera, which is paired with an 8-megapixel ultra wide angle lens and a macro shooter. The primary camera has a variable aperture that can change from f/1.4 to f/4.0. This enables a 2x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom. Meanwhile, the front houses a 60-megapixel main ultra wide angle selfie shooter and an 8-megapixel portrait camera. The wide angle sensor has an f/2.4 aperture and auto focus support and the portrait sensor has an f/2.2 aperture and also supports auto focus.

Pricing and Availability

The Huawei Nova 12 Ultra and Nova 12 Pro were announced in multiple color options, namely White, Black, Pink, and Blue for the Pro and Black, Blue, and Gray for the Ultra. They were also announced in two storage configurations each. The Nova 12 Ultra has a starting price tag of 4,699 Yuan (roughly 658 US Dollars) for the 512GB model, while the 1TB variant costs 5,499 Yuan (roughly 769 US Dollars).

The Nova 12 Pro has a 3,999 Yuan (roughly 560 US Dollars) price tag for the 256GB model, while the 512GB option costs 4,399 Yuan (roughly 615 US Dollars). Both models are currently listed for pre-orders, with the first sale of both devices set to go live on the morning of 12th January 2024.

We will be seeing new smartphone launches even in the last week of 2024. Three events are expected. All of them have been officially confirmed by the brands.

Two of these conferences will take place in China. They will be headed by Huawei and iQOO. Both of them will debut upper mid-range (affordable premium) handsets.

Whereas, the third event by Samsung will be held in India. The company will announce its latest budget 5G phones.

Upcoming Smartphones Next Week

Samsung Galaxy A15 5G and Galaxy A25 5G

Samsung has confirmed to launch Galaxy A25 5G and Galaxy A15 5G in India on December 26 (Tuesday). The event will begin at 12:30 PM IST.

Since these handsets are already official in some markets, we know everything about them. For starters, they feature a slightly tweaked design with a raised platform for power and volume keys called ‘Key Island’.

The A15 and A25 are powered by MediaTek Diemsnity 6100 Plus and Exynos 1280 chips, respectively. Both sport a 50MP main camera and a 2MP macro snapper. But the A25 has OIS as well as an 8MP ultrawide unit compared to a 5MP ultrawide camera on the A15.

On the software front, they ship with One UI 6.0 based on Android 14. They are backed by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 25W charging.

Huawei Nova 12 Series

The Huawei Nova 12 series is set to launch in China on December 26 (Tuesday). As of now, the brand has only only revealed the design and colors of these phones

Rumors are strife that there will be four models. These products will be called Huawei Nova 12, Huawei Nova 12 Pro, Huawei Nova 12 Ultra, and Huawei Nova 12 Lite (aka Vitality Edition).

The first three models are said to be powered by an underclocked HiSilicon Kirin 9000s chip. Thhere’s a chance of vanilla Nova 12 housing a new unannounced Kirin 830 SoC. Whereas, the live version is rumored to feature a Snapdragon 778G chipset.

Lastly, the ultra variant is expected to sport an OmniVision OV50H primary camera with variable aperture and support satellite communication.

iQOO Neo 9 Series

The iQOO Neo 9 series is scheduled to launch in China on December 27 (Wednesday). Its press conference will start at 7 PM local time (GMT+8).

According to leaks and teasers, there will be two devices, namely iQOO Neo 9 and iQOO Neo 9 Pro. They will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chipsets, respectively.

The handsets will flaunt a 6.78-inch 1.5K 144Hz OLED display. They will sport a 50MP Sony IMX920 primary camera assisted by OIS.

They will draw energy from a 5,160mAh battery with support for 120W charging. Lastly, the duo will be available in Red and White Soul, Nautical Blue, and Fighting Black color options.

After Huawei’s Mate 60 series, the Nova 12 series may get 5G capable Kirin chips

Huawei’s upcoming Nova 12 series devices may support 5G connectivity with the company’s in-house Kirin SoC. The Nova 12 is expected to be powered by a Kirin 8 series chip, whereas the Nova 12 Pro is expected to get a Kirin 9 series chip. Although specific details aren’t confirmed yet.

It may be due to some Kirin-exclusive capabilities, as we see on Google Tensor chips. One of the exclusive features might be satellite connectivity.

Other than the SoC, the Nova 12 series is expected to boast a 60 megapixel wide-angle selfie camera with a triple rear camera setup on the back. The Nova 12 series might release as early as December this year. Nonetheless, it’s also important to note that the supply of Huawei’s Kirin chips is currently below the demand. So, the availability of the devices might also be insufficient.

However, the company is working hard to surpass the technological limitations they have and is continuing to contribute to the development of newer technologies and making great devices. An example of this might be the addition of foldable technologies in the mid-range segment. In addition, as DCS expects, the company’s flagship devices may get a significant camera hardware upgrade.

So far, Huawei has launched two flip-style foldable phones. The P50 Pocket was announced in December 2021 in China, whereas the Pocket S was unveiled in November 2022. Hence, it appears that a Pocket-branded product will likely launch in China before the end of this year. A few new leaks that have surfaced now have revealed the design of the upcoming Pocket S2 and some of its details.

As per the leaked render shared by tipster Teme, the upcoming Pocket S2 is expected to maintain the design language of its predecessors. It will feature two circular modules on the rear of the device. The first module will accommodate three cameras and an LED flash, with a camera layout reminiscent of the Honor Magic 6 series.

The second module on the back will serve as a secondary display, displaying various information, such as notifications. On the right side of the device, you can find a volume rocker, and this same side will probably incorporate a fingerprint sensor.

Huawei has just launched the Huawei Nova 11 SE mid-range phone in the Chinese market. Speculations are rife that the brand will unveil the Nova 12 series either this month or in December in China. The lineup is expected to rival the OPPO Reno 11 series and Vivo S18 series, which are expected to debut around the same time.
