With these two handsets, the huge line-up of Huawei mid-rangers became even bigger than it was. And now somebody may feel very confused in front of such an amount of affordable phones. That is the reason why we decided to compare the newly-announced Honor 9X Pro with the other recent mid-rangers released from Huawei. The ones coming with a similar price tag launched in the last period are Huawei Nova 5 and Huawei P Smart Z. It may be very hard for some people to choose between these three devices, that is why we hope this comparison will clear their ideas in regards.

Design

Given that they both have pop-up cameras and notch-less displays, Honor 9X Pro and Huawei P Smart Z look more futuristic and beautiful than Huawei Nova 5. Between these twos, I prefer the Honor 9X Pro because of its amazing light effects creating an X pattern on its rear side. Further, Honor 9X Pro boasts a side-mounted fingerprint reader which makes the rear side cleaner. But if you do not like pop-up cameras and you want an in-display fingerprint reader, then Huawei Nova 5 and its waterdrop notch is undoubtedly your best choice.

Display

Both Honor 9X Pro and Huawei P Smart Z are equipped with an IPS display, while Huawei Nova 5 is the only to sport a higher-end OLED panel. It is a display with a very high 108 percent DCI-P3 coverage, so it shows more brilliant and accurate colors, as well as deeper blacks. On the other hand, it is the smallest panel with a diagonal of just 6.39 inches, while both Honor 9x Pro and Huawei P Smart Z have 6.59-inch displays.

Specs & Software

Huawei P Smart Z loses the hardware comparison at the beginning because it is simply equipped with a lower-end chipset and it comes in just one configuration with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. Honor 9X Pro is definitely the most impressive because it boasts a better Kirin 810 chipset realized with a 7 nm production process, 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal storage. Huawei Nova 5 has exactly the same hardware department but just 128 GB of internal storage.

Camera

The most complete and versatile camera setup belongs to the Huawei Nova 5 which is equipped with a quad rear camera. It includes an amazing 48 MP main sensor, a 16 MP wide sensor, a depth sensor, and even a dedicated macro camera. Last but not least, it has a better selfie camera than its internal rivals, with a 32 MP resolution. The Honor 9X Pro has a triple rear camera, it lacks the dedicated macro camera and it has a lower resolution for the ultrawide sensor, but it retains the 48 MP main sensor. The less impressive one is the Huawei P Smart Z with just a 16 MP dual camera.

Battery

The weakest point of the Huawei Nova 5 is its battery which comes with only 3500 mAh of capacity (it still offers a more than sufficient battery life), but it is able to charge very quickly thanks to its awesome 40W fast charging. Huawei P Smart Z and Honor 9X Pro have the same 4000 mAh battery but we believe Honor 9X Pro will last more because it boasts a more efficient chipset (12 nm vs 7 nm).

Price

Honor 9X Pro carries a €290/$323 starting price, Huawei P Smart Z costs €280/$312 and Huawei Nova 5 starts from €360/$400. Overall, Huawei Nova 5 is a better phone due to its amazing display and better cameras, but I would go for the Honor 9X Pro because I prefer to have a bigger battery instead of a slightly better (but still midrange-class) screen and cameras.

The benchmark result confirms the Honor 9X runs Android 9 Pie and is powered by the Kirin 810 processor. It also has a Mali-G52 GPU. The variant benchmarked has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The phone also packs a display with a 2340 x 1080 resolution.

[envira-gallery id=”264219″]

The AnTuTu score is 219,809 points but it trails behind the Huawei Nova 5 which also uses the same processor but scored 237,437 points. It is important to note that the Nova 5 that was benchmarked has 8GB of RAM. While that may influence the score, optimizations will also play a part. The benchmarked Honor 9X is said to be a prototype, so the final product may have a higher score.

The Honor 9X will have a 6.59-inch LCD display powered by a 3900mAh battery. It will have a 16MP pop-up selfie camera and 48MP + 2MP dual rear cameras. The phone will be available in three variants – 4GB + 64GB, 6GB + 128GB, and 8GB + 256GB. It will also have support for storage expansion and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The Honor 9X will launch alongside the Honor 9X pro on July 23 in China.

That is why buying a midrange actually makes sense even for an advanced user. But only if you know what you are buying, and in order to know it, you must be constantly updated about the latest models released and their specifications. One of the latest upper-midrange devices out there is the new Huawei Nova 5 which is very interesting as it is the first phone to be powered by the new Kirin 810 chipset. Here, we compared it with the other best-selling mid-rangers in the actual market: the new Redmi K20 and the iconic Oppo Reno.

Design

Redmi K20 Pro and Oppo Reno are one step forward if we talk about the design. They come with fewer bezels around the display thanks to the presence of a pop-up camera above it, which shows up through a motorized slider. While Redmi K20 Pro has a classic pop-up mechanism, Oppo Reno is equipped with a shark fin pop-up camera. Whether you should go for the Redmi K20 or the Oppo Reno is up to your tastes. We do not recommend the Huawei Nova 5 if you want an original design, but it is far from being an ugly handset.

Display

There are just marginal differences between the displays of these smartphones, so you should definitely not base your choice on the display quality. Further, note that each of these devices has a great OLED panel with brilliant colors and great chromatic performances. I personally prefer the Redmi K20 because it is HDR-compliant, but Huawei Nova 5 is amazing as well thanks to its 108 percent DCI-P3 coverage. Oppo Reno has a high DCI-P3 coverage too, but not as high as the Huawei Nova 3. On the other side, it should have a more resistant glass due to the Gorilla Glass 6 protection.

Specs & Software

We still had no chance to test the performance of the new Kirin 810 chipset, but on the paper, it is an amazing chipset. It should theoretically be very close to the Snapdragon 730 found on the Redmi K20 (it is even superior according to the first benchmarks), but I love the latter due to its awesome Adreno 618 GPU. Further, the Redmi K20 has internal storage which goes up to 256 GB, while Huawei Nova 5 stops at 128 GB in its most expensive variant. Note that Huawei Nova 5’s storage can be expanded, while Redmi K20 does not feature an expansion slot.

Camera

Here it is a very hard fight between Redmi K20 and Huawei Nova 5. As long as we do not personally test the latter, we can not give you a definitive verdict about its camera quality. Especially because it is equipped with a quad camera setup including a dedicated macro camera. Redmi K20 Pro has a triple camera but it is an incredible camera phone in most of the light conditions, so it may not be easy to establish a winner.

Battery

Redmi K20 wins the battery comparison because it has a way bigger battery than its rivals. With 4000 mAh, it can last up to two days with moderate usage. Huawei Nova 5 has the smallest battery, but it comes with an incredibly fast charging technology, unlike Oppo Reno and Redmi K20. With a max power of 40W, it can reach 85 percent in just 30 minutes.

Price

Huawei Nova 5 launched in the Chinese market with a €360/$410 price tag in the 8/128 GB configuration, Redmi K20 Pro starts from just €260/$295 in the 6/64 GB variant, and Oppo Reno starts from €500/$570. Huawei Nova 5 and Redmi K20 are currently two phones with a higher value for money, at least in a few Asian markets. I would personally go for the Redmi K20 Pro for its amazing performance, bigger battery, and great design.

Huawei did reveal that the new chipset is built on a 7nm wafer making it the second Huawei SoC to be built on the 7nm process after the flagship Kirin 980. The Kirin 810 has now been benchmarked on AnTuTu. The Nova 5 is the only device to have featured the chipset. Thus, it is safe to say the chipset isn’t a flagship chipset even though it is said to have floored the Kirin 980, Snapdragon 855 and Helio P90 in AI benchmark test.

The AnTuTu benchmark score of the Nova 5 shows the device got a score of 237437 points. This places the device in the upper midrange category. The Kirin 810, however, performs significantly more than the Kirn 710 and even the Snapdragon 730 chipset in all aspects including CPU, GPU, UX and MEM.

The HiSilicon Kirin 810 is an octa-core processor which is built on TSMC’s 7nm node. It comes equipped with two Cortex-A76 high-performance large cores clocked at 2.27 GHz and six Cortex-A55 energy efficient small cores clocked at 1.88 GHz. It is coupled with Mali-G52 GPU for graphics processing. It also comes with the new Huawei DaVinci architecture NPU, which consumes less energy and has artificial intelligence (AI) technology running at over 32,280 points. s stated, the AI performance of the Kirin 810 even surpasses that of the flagship Snapdragon 855.

The listing states that the phone will be available in some irresistible color editions like Green, Purple, Black and Orange. Freshly leaked live shots of the Green and Purple editions of the Nova 5 Pro have surfaced on Weibo.

The Huawei Nova 5 Pro hands-on images show that it will be arriving with a waterdrop notch screen. The rear side of the smartphone is made out of glass and it lacks a fingerprint reader. Rumors are rife that the Nova 5 Pro is equipped with an OLED screen that is integrated an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The rear shell of the Nova 5 Pro has a quad camera setup. Among them three sensors are placed in the same line followed by an LED flash and there is a separately placed lens which seems to be a ToF sensor. One of the images show the charger of the phone. However, the text on the charger is not clearly visible. The 3C certification of the phone had revealed that the Nova 5 Pro will be shipped with a 40W rapid charger.

The Huawei SEA-AL10 was benchmarked yesterday. It runs Android 9 Pie, has 8GB of RAM and is powered by an octa-core processor. The benchmark scores – 3520 and 9497 – are similar to those of Kirin 980-powered devices, hence the conclusion that it uses the same chipset.

Huawei has confirmed that it will be launching Nova 5 series smartphones on 21st June in China.

Now, ahead of the launch, render of the protective case of the Nova 5 has leaked online, which reveals that the smartphone will feature a waterdrop notch on top of the display. It also suggests that the phone will have an in-display fingerprint sensor given that there’s no cut-out for the traditional fingerprint sensor.

The leak also shows that the phone will come with four camera sensors arranged vertically on the back panel, along with an LED flash. The camera module on the phone is placed in the top-left corner.

Earlier, tempered glass for the Huawei Nova 5 had leaked online, which also revealed that the phone will have a waterdrop notch in the center of the display. It also hints at minimal bezels surrounding the display.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei seeks trademark for Hongmeng OS in Peru

Along with this, a case render of the Huawei Nova 5 Pro shows its back panel. This confirms the quad camera setup for an enhanced camera experience. There’s also no rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and is likely to house an in-display fingerprint sensor.

As for the specifications, the Nova 5 is expected to come powered by the company’s own Kirin 810 octa-core chipset while the Nova 5 Pro is said to be powered by the Kirin 980 flagship chipset. The Nova 5i, on the other hand, is expected to come powered by Kirin 710 octa-core processor. The Huawei P20 Lite (2019), which was recently launched in Europe, is expected to come as Huawei Nova 5i.

Along with the Nova series smartphones, the Chinese smartphone maker is also going to launch the Huawei M6 tablet at the launch event. To know the pricing and availability details of all these devices, we’ll have to wait until the official launch event in China that will take place on 21st June.

The company is reportedly gearing up to launch the Huawei Nova 5 series smartphones.

A protective film for the display of Nova 5 and Nova 5 Pro has leaked online, which showcases that the upcoming smartphones will come with a full-screen display without any kind of notch on top of the screen.

This indicates that the company could be using a pop-up camera mechanism for the front-facing snapper or could use a flip camera mechanism similar to what we’ve seen in the recently launched Asus Zenfone 6 and Samsung Galaxy A80.

Earlier, the EEC certification confirmed that the Huawei Nova 5 has a model number SEA-LX1 whereas the Nova 5i has a model number of GLK-LX1U. The EEC approval of these smartphones hasn’t revealed any information on their specifications.

As per the reports, the Huawei Nova 5 is expected to come with an OLED display but the exact screen size is not yet known. It is expected to come with an in-display fingerprint for added security measures. There’s also a possibility of a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Under the hood, it will be powered by Kirin 980 octa-core chipset. Coming to the camera department, reports indicate that the device will come with a triple rear camera setup with a Sony IMX586 48-megapixel primary sensor. On the front side, the phone will be equipped with a 25-megapixel snapper.

The smartphone is expected to be powered by a 3,500mAh battery and if the reports are to be believed, then the device will also come with support for 40W fast charging technology.

While the launch date of the Huawei Nova 5 series has not been confirmed yet, it is being reported that the smartphone could go official by the end of this month and could go on sale shortly after the announcement.

The Huawei Nova 5 may possibly be the last device to ever come from Huawei running the Android OS. That is, assuming it still runs Android when it ships. It’s fully possible Huawei will use the Nova 5 as a vessel to introduce their upcoming ARK OS to the public. We already know ARK or HongMeng OS might come in June, what better way to unveil it than alongside a product launch?

As of right now, we don’t know all that much about the Huawei Nova 5. The last we heard from it, we got to see some protective cases and renders. We also know it may come with a 40W charger inside the retail box.We also know there are two variants, the Nova 5 and Nova 5i with the codenames SEA-TL10 and SEA-AL10 respectively. Other than that, all we can really do at the moment is speculate.

The smartphone may include a 3,500mAh battery. For shooting selfies, it may feature a Sony IMX576 25-megapixel front-facing cameras. The triple camera system of the phone may feature a 12.3-megapixel Sony IMX380 wide-angle lens, a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor and a Sony IMX316 ToF (Time of Flight) sensor that was seen on the Honor V20 phone. As for the SoC, rumors suggest a Kirin 980, but we find that somewhat off.

The 40W fast charge may find its way into the mid-range Nova 5 series when they are launched. A pair of Huawei models believed to be the Nova 5 models have received 3C certification in China. The models are listed with model numbers SEA-TL10 and SEA-AL10.

China’s 3C listing doesn’t usually reveal much but the most important thing we can grab from the listing is the presence of a 40W charger inside the retail box. The charger has the same serial number as the one spotted on the Huawei P30 Pro’s charging block.

While the model numbers don’t categorically confirm the Nova 5 moniker, the appearance of a Huawei model on the Eurasian Economic Commission’s website bearing a similar model number SEA-LX1 and listed as “Huawei nova 5” lends credence to speculations that this is the Nova 5 models. Besides, the Nova series is yet to get updated this year and we expect a fresh launch to happen soon.

A couple of protective cases and renders of the Nova 5 had recently leaked online giving us an idea of the design. The Nova 5 hit EEC with the Nova 5i which had the codename SEA-LX1U. The device will have a design similar to the Honor 20 Lite but there won’t be a rear fingerprint sensor. Instead, it will pack an under-display fingerprint sensor.

Mishaal Rahman Editor-in-Chief of XDA Developers had recently shared model numbers of upcoming Huawei and Honor phones that are powered by Kirin 980 SoC. Among them was the SEA-AL10 / TL10 model number that is rumored to belong to the Nova 5 smartphone.

The SEA-AL10 / TL10 smartphone is expected to arrive with a 6.39-inch AMOLED display that will produce full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. Probably, it could be equipped with a waterdrop-style notch screen since the Kirin 970 powered Nova 3 had featured a wider display notch.
