Despite the Huawei P50 Pro launching in 2021, the flagship device from the company did not feature 5G networking. However, a new protective cover for the smartphone has just been launched, which enables it to connect to the latest networking standard.

The new protective cover is the “5G Connectivity Case” that was made by Soyealink. This case features an embedded an eSIM chipset and a 5G modem in the smartphone cover itself. In other words, this converts the 4G smartphone into a 5G enabled model. Furthermore, the design of the case in terms of its weight and thickness is similar to most other protective cases in the market, so it does not add any unwanted bulk to the Huawei P50 Pro.

It weighs just 52 grams and a thickness of around 3.2mm. The case arrives in a light gray color option and is made from leather, which gives it a premium feel. Back when the P50 Pro was first announced, we had reported on rumors that the Chinese tech giant or possibly third party accessories maker are working for a case that enables the smartphone to connect to 5G networking. Now, such a product is finally available in the Chinese market.

Once the 5G Connectivity Case is put on, the main SIM card of the smartphone and the eSIM network signal for the cover are merged into a single card and displayed as the sole smartphone signal bar. As of right now, it is not known when the case will be available for purchase, but it is priced at 799 Yuan or roughly around 118 US Dollars.

Earlier this year, Huawei had launched its highly anticipated P50 flagship series of smartphone. While the device offered top notch specs and features it lacked 5G support, but now, live images of an internal testing variant of the P50 Pro has just surfaced online, which supports 5G networking.

The image was shared by @一个小串串 and we can tell that the device is a testing version as it sports the Chinese tech giant’s IDEALS logo. This signifies that it is a non retail version that is not made for sale and is used by the company’s internal testing. Furthermore, the @一个小串串 added that the device arrives with HarmonyOS, a HiSilicon Kirin 9000 series SoC with a complete RF chip.

Unfortunately, finer details regarding this device wasn’t revealed, although, the tipster added that the flagship smartphone might also feature an IMX700Y sensor from Sony. For those unaware, the P50 Pro launched in a 4G only variant, which meant it lacked 5G support that has since become a staple in the smartphone industry. But due to the ban, the smartphone was limited to LTE networking through a 4G modem.

Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report as of right now, so take it with a pinch of salt. Although, a 5G variant of the smartphone was expected to launch sometime in the future. Furthermore, the P50 series is looking for a global release early next year so we might be hearing more about this 5G variant soon. So stay tuned for more updates.

A few days ago, Huawei announced the Huawei P50 series. However, both phones, the P50 and P50 Pro do not have support for 5G even though they are powered by chips that have 5G modems. You can read why here. If this is a dealbreaker for you, then you may want to wait for a rumored 5G version of the Pro model coming later.

The source of the info is Digital Chat Station and he said in a Weibo post that it has been confirmed that the Huawei P50 Pro will get a 5G version powered by the Kirin 9000 processor. We actually didn’t expect a 5G version of the Snapdragon 888 edition.

There is no info yet on when this model will be available but considering that some models of the P50 Pro won’t be sold until September alongside the standard P50, then we may not see this 5G version until later, probably the 4th quarter. The source also reaffirmed that the Huawei P50 Pro+ is coming too.

The Huawei P50 Pro has a 6.6-inch curved OLED screen with a centered punch hole and a 2700 x 1228 resolution. The screen has a 120Hz refresh rate and a 300Hz touch sampling rate.

Huawei announced the phone in Kirin 9000 and Snapdragon 888 variants and it is available with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. There is also support for storage expansion.

The P50 Pro has two main cameras – a 50MP RGB sensor and a 40MP B/W sensor. There is also a 13MP ultrawide angle camera and a 64MP telephoto camera that brings 3.5x optical zoom, 20x hybrid zoom, and 100x digital zoom. The front-facing camera is a 13MP sensor.

A 4360mAh battery powers the device along with support for 66W fast wired charging and 50W wireless fast charging. A charger doesn’t come included in the box. The phone also has an IP68 rating, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, and runs HarmonyOS 2. It is already available for pre-order in China and will be available for purchase on August 12.
