Huawei Technologies’ handset business is making an impressive comeback, according to Richard Yu, the head of the company’s consumer business. Speaking at the annual developer conference in Dongguan, he revealed that Huawei’s share of the domestic smartphone market soared by a staggering 76.1% in the second quarter. Furthermore, the company secured the second spot in the high-end sector, showcasing its determination to reclaim its market standing.

Counterpoint Research data indicates that Huawei held 11.3% of the overall China market in the second quarter, trailing five competitors led by Vivo and Apple. Despite the challenges posed by US government restrictions, Huawei remains steadfast in its efforts to rebuild its smartphone business.

Earlier this year, Huawei unveiled a series of new smartphones, dispelling rumors of any intentions to sell off its handset business. The launch included the highly anticipated foldable smartphone Mate X3 and the flagship phone P60 series. These innovations have been pivotal in sparking interest among consumers, propelling Huawei towards a positive trajectory.

At a recent product launch event in Shanghai, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s device business group, expressed his optimism for the future, stating, “We have experienced four years of winter under sanctions. Now, the spring has come, and we are excited about the future.”

Central to Huawei’s resurgence has been its unwavering commitment to research and development. Despite the challenges of the US ban, the company has invested heavily in cutting-edge technologies. In 2022, Huawei’s R&D spending reached an impressive $23.8 billion. The company remains steadfast in its commitment to exploration and innovation as profits continue to grow.

Xiang Ligang, director-general of the Information Consumption Alliance, emphasized that since the US government’s tough restrictions were imposed on Huawei in 2019, the company has tirelessly worked to mitigate the negative impact on its revenues. Now, these efforts are evidently paying off, with Huawei on an upward trajectory and showing signs of a remarkable recovery.

Huawei has reportedly informed suppliers of key smartphone components that they should expect a drop in orders of up to 60% of its components. This is coming in the wake of the US ban which has almost crippled the company’s smartphone business.

Huawei recently hinted that it wasn’t considering selling the smartphone business. But it can’t be business as usual as the Chinese tech giant has obviously almost run out of chip inventory and unless there is an intervention from the new US administration, the company will totally run out of inventory soon.

Asian Nikkei reports that the Chinese tech giant is only planning to order components for between 70-80 million phone units for the entire year. Although the US ban was in effect last year, Huawei shipped 189 million units which means the company expects a 60% drop in phone shipments this year. It should be noted that last year’s shipment was a far cry from the 240 million phones Huawei shipped in 2019.

In addition, the telecommunications giant won’t be releasing too many flagship models this year, as a result of its inability to source components for 5G phones. Instead,m the company will release 4G phones more. However, we still expect to see a few 5G models such as the Mate X2 and Huawei P50.

Sadly, we can’t tell when things will return to normal for Huawei. US Commerce secretary nominee has told a Senate committee during her screening that she has seen “no reason” to lift the trade restrictions off Huawei, maintaining that the company poses a risk to national security.

Up until last year, Huawei’s Mate series was considered to be the flagship phone lineup and its sibling, the Huawei P-series hardly received any attention. That was not surprising, given that the Huawei P8 models were decent but nothing out of the ordinary. But things have changed with the Huawei P9, and it is heard that the phone is selling very well, thanks to the powerful Kirin processor inside as well as the Leica certified dual 12MP cameras at the back.

Naturally, the next generation model in the P-series, most likely called as the Huawei P10 should come with better specs. Even the dual Leica branded cameras on the phone is expected to be upgraded. The upgraded specs would probably call for an increase in the price tag, but as of now, we are clueless about any exact figures.

In case you are preparing to get hold of the Huawei P10 when it launches at MWC 2017, then it’s worth mentioning that a new rumor states that the P10 will be quite costly. In fact, Ricciolo, who leaked this information says that the Huawei P10 will be the most expensive P-series phone till date. But he adds that it would be cheaper than the exorbitantly priced Huawei Porsche Design model (~$1500). Well, that was kind of obvious, wasn’t it? Even after hearing this, I still hope that the base model starts at less than $800. In case you are wondering, the current Huawei P9 32GB model starts at around $650.

Specs wise, the Huawei P10 is expected to come with a 5.5-inch display with 2K resolution. The phone’s design is reported to be similar to the existing P9 and we did see a couple of new renders of the upcoming flagship a couple of days back (added at the end of this article).
