Huawei has officially announced that its first smartphone running the full-fledged HarmonyOS Next is set for launch next week. The news comes from Huawei’s Executive Director, Richard Yu, who shared a video teasing an upcoming device equipped with a stable version of the HarmonyOS Next. Following the announcement, a well-known tipster has provided insight into what this mysterious device could be.

Alleged Huawei Pocket 3 specifications

According to sources like WHYLAB and Digital Chat Station, this upcoming smartphone is likely the Huawei Pocket 3, internally codenamed “Verde.” It is expected to be a flip-style foldable, offering a thinner, smaller, and lighter body than its predecessor.

The inner foldable display is said to measure around 6.28 inches, while the cover screen could be approximately 3.5 inches. Interestingly, the screen aspect ratio may be 3:2, making it wider than most compact foldables available today.

Beyond its unique display proportions, the Pocket 3 is tipped to feature a 50-megapixel primary camera with a large sensor, promising a high-quality imaging experience. Additionally, the device is expected to include dust and water resistance, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and further refinements in its foldable design.

At present, the exact moniker is not known yet. While it is being dubbed as Pocket 3, the device may launch with a different name. A previous report claimed that it will arrive with an affordable price tag.

Now tipster claims that Huawei’s next flip phone will have a much wider aspect ratio.

A 3:2 inner display

The Huawei Pocket 3, code-named “Verde,” stands out with its unique 3:2 aspect ratio for the foldable display, a departure from the typical 20:9 or 21:9 ratios seen in vertical foldables. The main inner display measures 6.3 inches, while the outer cover screen is 3.5 inches. This design draws striking parallels to Apple’s iPad Mini, which also features a 3:2 aspect ratio. As a result, the Pocket 3 is being referred to as a “foldable iPad Mini,” which, if true, will offer a blend of portability and productivity that could appeal to a wide range of users.

Richard Yu, Huawei’s executive director, recently teased the product in a Weibo video, calling it a groundbreaking innovation that “others can’t think of.” Slated for a March launch, the Pocket 3 will run on native HarmonyOS and is expected to feature significant advancements in hardware, software, and ecosystem integration.

Richard Yu also confirmed that major Chinese tech giants, including Tencent, ByteDance, Alibaba, and Meituan, are optimizing their apps for the platform. This is expected to result in a continued seamless experience despite the change in aspect ratio. That said, the change in aspect ratio is still a rumor at this point, and we will need to see how much of an impact it could have in the smartphone industry if it materializes in the first place. Pura 80 series delayed, Pocket 3 heading for March launch

Huawei unveiled the Pura 70 series of flagship phones in April 2024. According to tipster Fixed Focus Digital, the Huawei Pura 80 series is expected to face a delay, with its release likely pushed back to May or June. This is in line with a previous leak by DCS who claimed that the Pura 80 lineup will be unveiled in Q2 this year.

On the other hand, the Pocket 3, Huawei’s flip-style foldable phone targeting the female market, is still on track for a March release. The Pocket 3 is rumored to be a groundbreaking device that could surprise competitors with innovative features or design elements.

In a newer Weibo post, a tipster revealed that Richard Yu (referred to as “Big Mouth,” a well-known nickname for him in Chinese tech circles and media), the CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, hinted at the launch of a new phone in March. According to Yu, the device will be affordable, with the statement, “A new phone will be launched in March, and everyone can afford it.”  While this one appears to be the Pocket 3, no concrete details about the device’s specifications have been disclosed yet.

Tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo has shared information regarding the launch timeline of the Pocket 3 smartphone. As per the Huawei Pocket 3 will be launching at the Spring Festival, which will be celebrated from January 29 to February 12.

The tipster also added that devices like the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, Oppo Find X8 Ultra, and Realme Neo 7 SE, alongside others, will also be launching in February 2025, so it will be an interesting month for customers and tech enthusiasts alike.

Coming back to the Huawei Pocket 3, previous leaks have claimed that the Pocket 3 will be thinner, lighter, and smaller than the Pocket 2, but details about its core specifications are not yet available. It is expected to continue the use of premium features such as high-quality OLED displays and a high-end camera setup. The device will compete against the likes of the Xiaomi Mix Flip 2, Honor Magic V Flip 2, and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7.

Taking a look at its predecessor, the Huawei Pocket 2 debuted with a 6.94-inch OLED LTPO foldable screen with a 1.5K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It also has a 1.15-inch OLED LTPO outer display. For photography, it includes a 10.7-megapixel front camera and a rear setup with a 50-megapixel main, 12-megapixel ultra-wide, 8-megapixel telephoto, and 2-megapixel spectral camera.

Powered by a Kirin chipset, the device packs a 4,520mAh battery, supports 66W wired and 40W wireless charging, and offers up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. It includes a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and satellite messaging capabilities.
