Huawei Pura 70 series shipments increased by 125% Y0Y as compared to the P60 series

Huawei launched the Pura 70 series in April this year with a new Kirin chipset. In the latest news, a Huawei insider claimed that the shipment volume of the series increased by 125% year-on-year compared to the P60 series.

The news comes from market research firm TechInsights. The firm’s report states that the Mate 60 Pro’s shipments in China within 5 months from release were 6.2 million units. The report also predicted that the Pura 70 series shipments in 2024 will exceed 10 million units.

The Pura 70 series consists of four different models – the Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra. While the Pura 70 is powered by the Kirin 9000S1, the other models are powered by the Kirin 9010 chip.

The base model offers a 6.6″ screen, while the other models come with a slightly larger 6.8″ screen. These are LTPO OLED panels with support for 1B colors that reach a peak brightness of 2500 nits. All of them come with an aluminum frame and offer an IP68 dust and water resistance rating.

Speaking of cameras, the main cameras of all three models come with variable aperture and OIS. The Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, and Pura 70 Pro Plus equip a 1/1.3″ 50MP main sensor while the Ultra model packs a larger 1″ type sensor for the main camera. In addition to the main camera, the Pura 70 offers a 12MP 125mm periscope telephoto (5x) and a 13MP ultrawide. The Pro and Pro Plus model offers a 48MP telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom and a 12.5MP ultrawide. In contrast, the Pura 70 Ultra packs a 40MP ultrawide and a 50MP 3.5x telephoto. The main camera on the Ultra model also comes with a retractable lens.

Huawei Pura 70 has 33 China-made components, highest ratio for the brand

While the reports claiming that Huawei Pura 70 phones have 90% of their parts sourced from Chinese suppliers turned out to be false, research firm TechInsight’s analysis reveals that the phones indeed have a record number of locally sourced semiconductors.

TechInsights’ analysis reveals that the majority of components in the Pura 70 series are from China. The base Pura 70 model shows the highest reliance on Chinese parts, with 33 out of 69 components sourced domestically, compared to only five from non-Chinese suppliers.

The Pura 70 Ultra exclusively uses memory from Yangtze Memory Technologies Corporation (YMTC), China’s leading NAND memory maker, which is also facing US sanctions.

“The ratio of Chinese-procured components was higher in the standard Pura 70 than in the Pro Plus model,” said Stacy Wegner, a TechInsights analyst.

A previous TechInsights analysis revealed that the HiSilicon Kirin chips powering the Pura 70 series are manufactured by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), China’s largest chipmaker. That is consistent with the production of the Mate 60 chips, all using the same 7-nanometer process.

Huawei’s reduced reliance on foreign manufacturers is a significant win for the company, especially given the tight restrictions imposed by the US.

Recently, the US revoked chip export licenses from Qualcomm and Intel for Huawei, further limiting access to their products. However, analysts downplay the impact of this move, noting Huawei’s existing capabilities in producing 4G and 5G chipsets for various phone models.

“We don’t expect the revoked licenses to significantly affect Huawei’s smartphone business in 2024,” said Linda Sui, a senior analyst at TechInsights.

Huawei recently debuted its Pura 70 series in the global market, starting with Malaysia. The Pura 70 series, including the Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, and Pura 70 Ultra, have also arrived in the European market.

After China, Huawei has silently debuted the Pura 70 series in Malaysia. The lineup consists of three models: the Pura 70, the Pura 70 Pro, and the top-of-the-line Pura 70 Ultra. Let’s get into the details here.

Price and Availability

Each variant comes in a single RAM and storage configuration. The most affordable option is the Pura 70 (12GB RAM, 256GB storage) priced at RM3,699, followed by the Pura 70 Pro (12GB RAM, 512GB storage) at RM4,899. The feature-packed Pura 70 Ultra (16GB RAM, 512GB storage) comes in at RM6,599.

As for the color options, the Pura 70 is available in Black, White, or Pink. The Pura 70 Pro is limited to Black or White while the premium Pura 70 Ultra has a vegan leather back and comes in Black, Brown, or Green.

New detail suggests the Huawei Pura 70 series, recently launched in China, might be making its way to the global market soon.

Two models from the lineup, the standard Huawei Pura 70 (model number ADY-LX9) and the Pura 70 Pro (model number HBN-LX9), have been spotted on the SIRIM website in Malaysia.

SIRIM certification is a mandatory requirement for gaining market access in Malaysia. It signifies that the certified products meet safety standards for electrical and digital equipment. The certification process often precedes a product launch in the region.

While Huawei hasn’t officially announced the global rollout of the Pura 70 series, the SIRIM listing suggests an imminent launch in Malaysia. Huawei might release the smartphones in other regions after that.

However, only two models from the series have been listed so far, and the Pura 70 Pro+ and 70 Ultra are missing from the certification database.

Huawei Pura 70 / 70 Pro Specifications

As far as the specs go, both smartphone features an OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and have Kunlun glass protection on the front. But the screen size differs: the Pura 70 has a 6.6-inch display whereas the Pro has a tad bigger 6.8-inch screen.

Powering the Pura 70 is a Kirin 9000S1 chip, a downlocked version of the Kirin 9000S chip. Whereas, the Pro model has the new Kirin 9010 chip. Regardless of the SoC, you get to choose up to 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage.

Talking about the cameras, the standard model sports a 50MP main, 13MP ultrawide and a 12MP periscope telephoto. The Pro model keep the main lens, but has a 12.5MP ultra-wide and a 48MP telephoto shooter.

All this is backed by a 5050mAh cell on Pura 70 Pro with 100W charging support while the Pura 70 has a smaller 4900mAh cell that supports 66W wired charging.

The Huawei Pura 70 series was launched in China on April 18. The series reportedly offers a new 5nm chipset which is capable enough to support a couple of AI features such as AI photo retouching, article summarization, handwriting removal, table extraction, dialect recognition, and more.

One of the key features of the AI photo retouching function is the removal of “disharmonious” elements from an image such as people in the background. The feature understands image semantics, removes distractions with one swipe, and fills the areas based on the surroundings with generative AI, just like some other flagships on the market. It also supports a cloud-based image enhancement feature that enhances image quality of a variety of images.

Another similar feature of the Pura 70 series powered by generative AI called “Xiaoyi Skin Care Q&A” where users can take a picture of a skincare product including the ingredients and share it with the Xiaoyi Assistant. The assistant will perform ingredient analysis and share the suitable skin type for the product and its efficacy details.

As mentioned before, the Xiaoyi Assistant can summarize articles and other documents. It can also translate the text in different languages.

Another feature of the Pura 70 series is “Smart vision” which can scan documents, remove handwriting, extract text and tables, etc.

Huawei recently introduced an entirely new Pura lineup to replace the long-standing P series. The Pura line emphasizes style, cutting-edge technology, and fashion, according to the company.

The company today took the wraps off of its new Pura 70 series smartphones, consisting of Pura 70, 70 Pro, 70 Pro Plus, and 70 Ultra.

The all-new Pura 70 Pro stands as the successor to the P60 Pro, offering an upgrade in design, display, and some key functionalities. So let’s delve into the specifics of both phones to understand how they compare.

Design and Display

The Pura 70 Pro features a larger 6.8-inch OLED display with a slightly higher resolution compared to the P60 Pro’s 6.67-inch panel. Both offer a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and high peak brightness.

However, the Pura 70 Pro pulls ahead with its 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, which should reduce eye strain. Both phones use Kunlun glass for better drop resistance. But the Pura 70 Pro steps it up with second-generation Kulun protection, offering even better resistance to drops.

The design has also been revamped since the P60. The Pura 70 sports a new triangular module on the back versus the P60’s rectangular camera setup.

Another subtle yet noticeable difference is in the display: the P60 Pro has a quad-curved screen, while the Pura 70 opts for a flat panel. However, both phones feature smaller punch-holes for the selfie camera or equally slim screen bezels.

But we do have to say that the raised angular design on the back gives the Pura 70 Pro a look unique of its own. As for colors, the P60 Pro comes in Black, Green, Violet, and Rococo Pearl, while the Pura 70 Pro offers Black, White, and Purple options.

Performance: The Biggest Difference

Performance is where there are significant differences between the two models. The P60 Pro runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, while the Pura 70 Pro opts for Huawei’s in-house Kirin 9010 chipset. Initial benchmarks of the Kirin 9010 show respectable performance.

Additionally, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 on the P60 Pro only supports 4G, while the Kirin 9010 in the Pura 70 Pro adds 5G connectivity.

The Pura 70 Pro also shines with its larger 5050mAh battery and faster charging speeds. It supports 100W wired charging, faster than the P60 Pro’s 88W. Both phones offer wireless charging, with the Pura 70 Pro supporting higher wattages at 80W compared to the P60 Pro’s 50W.

Camera and Other Features

Both phones also have powerful triple-camera systems. The P60 Pro features a 48MP primary sensor, a 13MP ultrawide sensor, and a 48MP periscope zoom lens with 5x optical zoom.

In contrast, the Pura 70 Pro takes a different approach, offering a 50MP main sensor with a variable aperture, a 48MP macro telephoto lens with impressive 35x super macro capabilities, and a 12.5MP ultrawide sensor.

Moreover, the smartphone comes pre-installed with HarmonyOS, with the Pura 70 Pro running a slightly newer iteration (Harmony OS 4.2) out of the box. Notably, both integrate satellite communication for two-way SMS functionality.

Verdict

All in all, with the Pura 70 Pro, Huawei has addressed some of the shortcomings of the P60 Pro. Most importantly, the phone now has an in-house Kirin chip with 5G support. Connectivity could be a big deciding factor to purchase a phone in 2024.

Apart from this, there are subtle but significant changes in design, display, camera, and even battery and charging. So the Huawei Pura 70 Pro appears to be a worthwhile upgrade over its predecessor.

Huawei has rebranded its P series to Pura. Now two models of the first flagship under the new branding, the Pura 70 series, have hit the shelves. For those unfamiliar, the series consists of a total of four models – the Huawei Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and finally an ultra model, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra. We are going to discuss the specifications, availability, and pricing of the Pura 70 and Pura 70 Pro. We have separately discussed the Pura 70 Pro+ and Pura 70 Ultra.

Huawei Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 specifications & features

The Pura 70 Pro series equips a 6.8″ OLED with a resolution of 2844 x 1260. This panel supports a 1-120Hz variable refresh rate 1440 Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, and a peak brightness of 2500 nits. For display protection, the phone uses the second generation Kunlun glass, which reportedly improves the drop resistance by 100%.

In contrast, the Pura 70 equips a slightly smaller 6.6″ display with a resolution of 2760 x 1256. It also equips the second-generation Kunlun glass for protection.

While the Pura 70 Pro is powered by the Kiron 9010 chip (a successor to the Kirin 9000s), the Pura 70 is said to equip an underclocked version of the Kirin 9000S, called the Kirin 9000S1. Huawei shook things up today by announcing a new flagship smartphone series – Pura – replacing their long-running P series that debuted in 2012. While details remain scarce from Huawei itself, reliable tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) has shed some light on what to expect.

Earlier today, the tipster revealed that the Pura lineup will consist of four models: Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra.

Now in a new Weibo post, the tipster has revealed the configurations and color options of upcoming Pura smartphones. According to DCS, the base Pura 70 is expected to come with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, available in Ice Crystal Blue, Feather Black, Snowy White, and Sakura Rose Red.

The Pro model bumps up the storage options to 512GB and 1TB, with a color palette of Snowy White, Roland Purple, and Feather Black.

Stepping up to the Pro+, you can expect memory configurations of 16GB RAM with either 512GB or 1TB storage. Color options here will be Light Woven Silver, String White, and Phantom Black. The leak also mentions a special “Lezhen Edition” but offers no details on its specifications or design.

Finally, the Pura 70 Ultra is listed with 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, and a choice between ceramic white and ceramic black finishes.

The leak further suggests the Pura 70 series will be available for purchase through offline channels.

Although not much, the official Huawei announcement video did give us a peek at what seems to be the rear camera design. In line with previous leaks, the Pura 70 series seems to feature a triangular camera island housing a setup of “one large, two small” cameras along with an LED flash.

With the official launch presumably just around the corner, we can expect more details about the Pura 70 series’ specs, pricing, and availability to surface soon.
