Huawei launched the Pura 70 series in April this year with a new Kirin chipset. In the latest news, a Huawei insider claimed that the shipment volume of the series increased by 125% year-on-year compared to the P60 series.

The news comes from market research firm TechInsights. The firm’s report states that the Mate 60 Pro’s shipments in China within 5 months from release were 6.2 million units. The report also predicted that the Pura 70 series shipments in 2024 will exceed 10 million units.

The Pura 70 series consists of four different models – the Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra. While the Pura 70 is powered by the Kirin 9000S1, the other models are powered by the Kirin 9010 chip.

The base model offers a 6.6″ screen, while the other models come with a slightly larger 6.8″ screen. These are LTPO OLED panels with support for 1B colors that reach a peak brightness of 2500 nits. All of them come with an aluminum frame and offer an IP68 dust and water resistance rating.

Speaking of cameras, the main cameras of all three models come with variable aperture and OIS. The Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, and Pura 70 Pro Plus equip a 1/1.3″ 50MP main sensor while the Ultra model packs a larger 1″ type sensor for the main camera. While the reports claiming that Huawei Pura 70 phones have 90% of their parts sourced from Chinese suppliers turned out to be false, research firm TechInsight’s analysis reveals that the phones indeed have a record number of locally sourced semiconductors.

TechInsights’ analysis reveals that the majority of components in the Pura 70 series are from China. The base Pura 70 model shows the highest reliance on Chinese parts, with 33 out of 69 components sourced domestically, compared to only five from non-Chinese suppliers.

The Pura 70 Ultra exclusively uses memory from Yangtze Memory Technologies Corporation (YMTC), China’s leading NAND memory maker, which is also facing US sanctions.

“The ratio of Chinese-procured components was higher in the standard Pura 70 than in the Pro Plus model,” said Stacy Wegner, a TechInsights analyst.

A previous TechInsights analysis revealed that the HiSilicon Kirin chips powering the Pura 70 series are manufactured by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), China’s largest chipmaker. That is consistent with the production of the Mate 60 chips, all using the same 7-nanometer process.

Huawei’s reduced reliance on foreign manufacturers is a significant win for the company, especially given the tight restrictions imposed by the US.

Recently, the US revoked chip export licenses from Qualcomm and Intel for Huawei, further limiting access to their products. However, analysts downplay the impact of this move, noting Huawei’s existing capabilities in producing 4G and 5G chipsets for various phone models.

“We don’t expect the revoked licenses to significantly affect Huawei’s smartphone business in 2024,” said Linda Sui, a senior analyst at TechInsights.

The Huawei Pura 70 series was launched in China on April 18. The series reportedly offers a new 5nm chipset which is capable enough to support a couple of AI features such as AI photo retouching, article summarization, handwriting removal, table extraction, dialect recognition, and more.

Huawei Pura 70 series offers a couple of AI features

One of the key features of the AI photo retouching function is the removal of “disharmonious” elements from an image such as people in the background. The feature understands image semantics, removes distractions with one swipe, and fills the areas based on the surroundings with generative AI, just like some other flagships on the market. It also supports a cloud-based image enhancement feature that enhances image quality of a variety of images.

Another similar feature of the Pura 70 series powered by generative AI called “Xiaoyi Skin Care Q&A” where users can take a picture of a skincare product including the ingredients and share it with the Xiaoyi Assistant. The assistant will perform ingredient analysis and share the suitable skin type for the product and its efficacy details.

As mentioned before, the Xiaoyi Assistant can summarize articles and other documents. It can also translate the text in different languages.

Another feature of the Pura 70 series is “Smart vision” which can scan documents, remove handwriting, extract text and tables, etc.

The Huawei Pura 70 series comprises four models: the Huawei Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra. While the Pura 70 Pro and Pura 70 Ultra have been available for sale since the launch day, the same wasn’t true for the Pura 70 and Pura 70 Pro+, which have now hit the shelves today.

Huawei‘s latest flagship phone in China, the Pura 70 Ultra, is getting a closer look thanks to a new teardown video. We’ve already had deep dives into its performance, but this video lets us see what makes it tick inside.

You can watch the full teardown (in Chinese) below. Here we’ll try to summarize its key findings.

The Pura 70 Ultra has a stylish design with a barely thin bezel around the screen and a now-familiar camera layout on the back. 

While the design is subjective, the phone seems well-built with metal frames and a leather back. It is a bit on the heavy side though, weighing in at 232 grams, a little more than the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The Pura 70 Ultra’s main highlight is its innovative retractable main camera. This design allows the lens to remain flush with the back of the phone when not in use. 

It not only protects the lens from scratches, but the retractable mechanism allows Huawei to pack a bigger sensor in a relatively compact space. 

The retraction mechanism uses stepper motors and is also IP68 dustproof and waterproof certified. It’s a first for mass-produced phones to feature such an innovative camera design. 

Under the hood, the Pura 70 Ultra packs the Kirin 9010 processor. Its benchmark scores are already out, and rather than being flagship level, the performance is more in line with SoCs like Snapdragon 888 and Dimensity 8200. 

However, the CPU performance did see improvements compared to the Kirin 9000s on the Mate 60. Huawei’s vapor chamber cooling mechanism is another interesting aspect of the device.

While it appears similar to conventional copper alloy VCs, the reviewer says it is significantly lighter and thinner. Hence Huawei might be using a composite material VC that offers exceptional thermal conductivity.

Huawei has shaken things up with the launch of the Pura 70 series, their successor to the long-standing P series. The top-of-the-line Pura 70 Ultra (Check out the unboxing of 70 Ultra) boasts some impressive upgrades over the previous-gen Huawei P60 Art. Let’s delve into the key differences.

Design and Display:

The Pura 70 series sports a fresh look with a distinct triangular camera module. The standard version retains a flat design, while the Pro models like the Ultra have slightly curved edges. In contrast, the P60 Art also introduced a distinct camera module, though it opted for a more traditional rectangular shape. Both phones stand out for their innovative camera module designs.

Both phones come with large OLED displays. The Pura 70 Ultra boasts a slightly bigger 6.8-inch screen compared to the P60 Art’s 6.67-inch display. However, both offer a smooth 120Hz refresh rate.

Performance:

The performance disparity between the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra and Huawei P60 Art hinges on their chipsets. The Pura 70 Ultra ditches the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 found in the P60 Art and introduces Huawei’s own Kirin 9010. Benchmarks suggest a significant performance leap for the Pura 70 Ultra. While details about the Kirin 9010’s manufacturing process remain unknown, its 12-core CPU with a 4+6+2 architecture boasts slightly higher clock speeds compared to the Kirin 9000s in the Mate 60 series. This translates to smoother performance and better multitasking capabilities.

Given what we know about the Kirin 9010, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the P60 Art still holds up as a strong performer. However, as newer chipset generations emerge, it is increasingly seen as outdated.

Camera:

Here’s where things get interesting. Both phones have a triple-camera setup on the rear, but the Pura 70 Ultra steals the show with its innovative 1-inch retractable main sensor. This allows for superior optical zoom and greater control over depth of field with its variable aperture. Huawei claims the retractable mechanism is incredibly durable, rated to retract and expand up to 300,000 times. The P60 Art’s main camera uses a more conventional 48MP sensor.

The Pura 70 Ultra also boasts a 50MP telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom and a dedicated 40MP ultrawide sensor. The P60 Art counters with a 48MP telephoto lens (also with 3.5x zoom) and a 40MP ultrawide sensor.

The Pura 70 Ultra’s telephoto lens allows for macro shots from a mere 5cm distance, a significant improvement over the P60 Art’s 10cm minimum focus distance.

Software:

Both phones run on Huawei’s HarmonyOS operating system. However, the Pura 70 Ultra comes with the newer HarmonyOS 4.2 version, which might offer some additional features and optimizations compared to the HarmonyOS 3.1 on the P60 Art.

Battery and Charging:

The Pura 70 Ultra packs a slightly larger 5200mAh battery compared to the P60 Art’s 5100mAh. However, both offer impressive fast charging capabilities. The Pura 70 Ultra boasts 100W wired charging and 80W wireless charging, while the P60 Art offers 88W wired and 50W wireless charging.

Other Features:

The Pura 70 Ultra boasts a few additional features missing in the P60 Art. This includes dual satellite connectivity for sending messages and calls even in remote areas and the latest generation Kunlun glass for improved scratch resistance.

Pricing

The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra starts at a steeper price point compared to the P60 Art. The base model with 512GB storage starts at 9999 yuan ($1381), while the P60 Art with the same storage starts at 8988 yuan ($1,241).

Huawei selected April 18 to debut the Pura 70 lineup as today marks the 12th anniversary of Ascend P1, the first phone in the series. 

The Pura 70 family consists of four devices: a standard model, two pro variants, and an ultra version. All of them were sold out as soon as they went on sale across online and offline channels.

The GizmoChina review team was fortunate enough to grab the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra on the first day of sale. We purchased the top-end 16GB + 1TB variant in Starburst Black color, which retails at ¥10,999 (~$1,520).

Huawei has announced the Pura 70 series of photography-focused flagship phones in China. The lineup comprises four models, such as the Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra. This post mainly focuses on the Ultra and Pro+ editions.

The Kirin 9010 chipset, an upgraded version of the Kirin 9000s powering the Mate 60 series, powers the Pura 70 Ultra and Pura 70 Pro+. The chipset comprises two large cores working at 2.30GHz, six medium cores operating at 2.18GHz, and four small cores running at 1.55GHz. For graphics, it features the Maleoon 910 GPU, which is also available with the Kirin 9000s.

The Huawei Pura 70 series’s XMAGE image system is equipped with a one-inch, 50-megapixel camera sensor. It features a mechanically rotating telescopic lens structure that can expand and contract internally. The company claims it can endure at least 300,000 expansions and contractions. Furthermore, even at speeds of 300 km/h, it can capture clear images. The main camera supports a variable aperture ranging from f/1.6 to f/4.0 and features sensor-shift anti-shake technology for stabilized shots. It is accompanied by a 40-megapixel ultra-wide lens and an OIS-enabled 50-megapixel telephoto macro camera. 

The Pura 70 Pro+ has the same primary camera with f/1.4~f/4.0 variable aperture and OIS support. It lacks the retractable lens system, which is exclusive to the Ultra model. It has a 12.5-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a 48-megapixel telephoto macro camera. Both phones have a 13-megapixel camera on the front.

The Pura 70 Pro+ and Ultra models have a 6.8-inch OLED LTPO panel that offers a resolution, a 1Hz–120Hz refresh rate, a 1440Hz PWM dimming, an in-screen fingerprint scanner, and second-generation Kunlun glass. The Pro+ has a 5,050mAh battery, whereas the Ultra edition has a 5,200mAh battery. Both phones support 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. In addition, both phones also offer 20W reverse wireless charging. Both phones run on Harmony OS 4.2 and offer specs, such as dual SIM, 5G, Wi-Fi 802.11ax, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, an IR blaster, and satellite calling. Lastly, both phones come equipped with an IP68-rated chassis.

Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, Pura 70 Pro+ price and availability

The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra comes in two options, such as 16GB+512GB for 9,999 Yuan (~$1,380) and 16GB+1TB for 10,999 Yuan (~$1,520). It comes in shades like Star Black, Starburst White, Mocha Brown, and Chanson Green.

The Pura 70 Pro+ comes in two options, such as 16GB+512GB for 7,999 Yuan (~$1,105) and 16GB+1TB for 8,999 Yuan (~$1,245). It comes in color options, such as Phantom Black, Light Wooven Silver, and String White. Both phones are available for purchase in China.

Huawei recently unveiled its upcoming Pura 70 series, replacing the popular P series. While the excitement builds, a new leak suggests production issues might cause stock shortages, particularly for the Pura 70 Pro.

On April 15th, Huawei’s official Weibo account started the promotional campaign by posting several teaser videos on the upcoming Pura series. Although the videos don’t tease the device yet but suggest the phones will be beautiful. Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu, hinted at “good news” coming soon, suggesting an imminent launch.

However, insiders suggest production capacity struggles could lead to limited availability, particularly for the Pro and Ultra models. The information comes from Digital Chat Station claiming a significant mismatch between supply and demand for the Pura 70 lineup.

Offline distributors reportedly expect the standard Pura 70 and Pura 70 Pro+ to have the most stock. However, the Pura 70 Pro appears to be in short supply, potentially making it the most difficult to purchase at launch.

The first phone in the new series will be the Pura 70. Huawei says they have been planning this renaming for at least five years, having applied for trademarks for “Pura” and “HUAWEI Pura” in 2019.

Earlier today, the tipster revealed that the Pura lineup will consist of four models: Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra. 

Now in a new Weibo post, the tipster has revealed the configurations and color options of upcoming Pura smartphones. According to DCS, the base Pura 70 is expected to come with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, available in Ice Crystal Blue, Feather Black, Snowy White, and Sakura Rose Red.

The Pro model bumps up the storage options to 512GB and 1TB, with a color palette of Snowy White, Roland Purple, and Feather Black.

Stepping up to the Pro+,  you can expect memory configurations of 16GB RAM with either 512GB or 1TB storage. Color options here will be Light Woven Silver, String White, and Phantom Black. The leak also mentions a special “Lezhen Edition” but offers no details on its specifications or design.

Finally, the Pura 70 Ultra is listed with 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, and a choice between ceramic white and ceramic black finishes.

The leak further suggests the Pura 70 series will be available for purchase through offline channels. 

Although not much, the official Huawei announcement video did give us a peek at what seems to be the rear camera design. In line with previous leaks, the Pura 70 series seems to feature a triangular camera island housing a setup of “one large, two small” cameras along with an LED flash.

As per a Weibo post by tipster Digital Chat Station, the Pura 70 lineup will include multiple devices, such as the Huawei Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra. The Ultra version will be the successor to the Art Edition and is likely to have the same configuration as the Pro+ model. However, it will have a better design. The Pro and Pro+ are mainly going to differ in departments like battery life and photography.
