Huawei has officially announced that the Huawei Pura 80 series and a suite of smart products will be launched at 2:30 PM (local time) on 11 June in China. The tagline, “See beyond with foresight”, underlines the series’ focus on advanced mobile imaging.

Huawei Pura 80 series teaser confirms imaging-focused design

The launch teaser prominently displays two camera lenses, reinforcing expectations that Huawei will be taking a bold step forward in smartphone photography. The elliptical shapes have led to speculation that both may be periscope-style telephoto lenses — a design shift that aligns with earlier leaks hinting at a dual-periscope zoom system, possibly reserved for the Ultra model.

This wouldn’t be Huawei’s first venture into dual telephoto territory, as the P40 Pro+ introduced the concept years ago. However, a dual-periscope setup at this level could reaffirm Huawei’s commitment to cutting-edge imaging, not just for zoom, but for overall optical performance.

According to reports, the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra will debut a custom 1-inch LOFIC CMOS sensor developed by SmartSens (model SC5A0CS). This sensor will utilise Huawei’s RYYB pixel arrangement, known for improving low-light sensitivity, and represents a major leap in mobile sensor technology. LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology enhances dynamic range and low-light performance at the hardware level, signalling Huawei’s ambition to set a new imaging benchmark.

Additionally, the Ultra model is said to feature a 50-megapixel 1/1.3-inch periscope telephoto lens — one of the largest in the market — outpacing Samsung’s HP9 sensor in size. This combination could make the Pura 80 Ultra a photography powerhouse in both wide and zoom shots.

While the Ultra will lead the charge, the rest of the Pura 80 series — including the Pura 80, Pura 80 Pro, and Pura 80 Pro+ — are expected to benefit from significant upgrades. All four models may feature Huawei’s latest Maple Original Colour Imaging technology (possibly updated to version 2.0), improving colour accuracy and visual fidelity through advanced calibration algorithms.

Huawei is also expected to drop the retractable lens design this time, focusing instead on a more compact multi-camera module that can house four sensors within a triangular or concentric layout, depending on the model.

The entire Pura 80 series will debut with HarmonyOS 5 out of the box, making it the first flat-flagship line-up to do so. Since its unveiling in March, HarmonyOS 5 has received iterative updates focused on improved security, fluidity, and ecosystem integration. Paired with the new Kirin 9020 processor, the Pura 80 series is expected to offer a refined, high-performance user experience.
