Huawei is giving its Huawei Pura X a small refresh more than a year after launch, adding two new color options without changing the hardware. The update was announced earlier today alongside the Pura X Max.

The new finishes are Stylish Orange and Stylish Purple. They sit alongside existing options like Phantom Night Black, Zero Degree White, Moon Shadow Gray, Stylish Red, and Stylish Green. The design remains the same multi-tone style seen on some earlier variants. On the Stylish Orange version, the frame and front are dark gray, while the back is split into three sections with two shades of orange and a beige panel. The Stylish Purple version uses a white gold frame and front, with the back divided into three shades of purple.

Both new colors are only available in a 16GB RAM and 512GB storage variant, priced at CNY 7,999 ($1,173). Sales have started on Vmall. Huawei is also bundling a one-year Huawei Care+ plan for purchases made before May 5. The plan covers accidental damage and includes access to support services.

The rest of the device remains unchanged. On the outside, there is a 3.5-inch OLED cover display with a 980×980 resolution and a square 1:1 aspect ratio. Unfolded, it reveals a 6.3-inch OLED main screen with a 2120×1320 resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio, which offers more room for reading and split-screen use.

The camera setup includes a 50MP main sensor with OIS, a 40MP ultra-wide lens, and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3.5x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. There is also a 10.7MP front camera, though the rear cameras can be used for selfies.

Other features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, satellite communication, and a USB 3.1 Type-C port. The phone is IPX8 rated for water resistance. It runs on Hongmeng OS 5 and is powered by a 4,720mAh battery with support for 66W wired and 40W wireless charging. Huawei has not revealed the chipset used in the device.

Unlike the book-style or clamshell foldable that dominate the market today, the Pura X introduces a sideways folding design, creating a wider aspect ratio when unfolded. Here’s what you need to know about its pricing, availability, and standout features.

Price and availability

The Pura X starts at 7,499 yuan for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant, while the 12GB + 512GB model costs 7,999 yuan.

For those looking for a premium option, there’s also a Collector’s Edition, which comes with 16GB of RAM and a tri-color leather back cover. This model includes satellite communication support and is available in two configurations:

• 512GB storage: 8,999 yuan
• 1TB storage: 9,999 yuan

The Pura X is available for purchase via Huawei’s official online platform in China.

A foldable that flips the script

Unlike traditional foldables that open vertically, the Pura X folds sideways, resulting in a wider unfolded display with a tablet-like aspect ratio. When closed, the device features a square cover screen sitting below a triple-camera module. 

Unfold it, and you’ll notice the hinge is positioned on the side, rather than the top. The 6.3-inch internal display comes with a 16:10 aspect ratio, making it wider than most foldables on the market. That extra width provides more room for reading documents, browsing the web, and multitasking without feeling constrained.

Huawei equips the Pura X with a 50MP primary sensor (OIS), a 40MP ultra-wide lens, and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3.5x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom. On the front, there’s a 10.7MP selfie camera, though, like most foldables, you can use the primary camera for selfies when the device is folded.

The Pura X is the first Huawei device to launch with Hongmeng OS 5, the company’s latest in-house operating system. Powering everything is a 4,720mAh battery with 66W wired charging and 40W wireless charging. 

The Pura X is also IPX8-rated for water resistance and comes with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and a USB 3.1 Type-C port.

Huawei’s latest foldable, the Pura X (check out the hands-on pictures), is here, and it’s making a statement that the foldable smartphone category still has plenty of room for fresh ideas. While most foldables seem to follow predictable patterns, either flipping vertically like the Galaxy Z Flip or folding like a book à la the Galaxy Z Fold, Huawei’s Pura X introduces something refreshingly different. This device challenges the norms with its wide, 16:10 aspect ratio, instantly setting it apart from the sea of tall and narrow foldables we’ve grown used to.

A New Take on Foldable Displays

The first thing that catches your eye is the Pura X’s unique folding direction. Most clamshell foldables open vertically, unfolding into a tall display that often feels awkward for multitasking or watching videos. The Pura X flips this concept on its side, literally. When unfolded, its 6.3-inch OLED screen is shorter but significantly wider than competitors like the Galaxy Z Flip 6 or Motorola Razr 50 Ultra. This 16:10 display feels more akin to a small tablet or an iPad Mini rather than a smartphone struggling with odd aspect ratios. It’s an immediate quality-of-life improvement that makes streaming content, browsing, and even document editing far more comfortable.

Outside, the Pura X sports a 3.5-inch square OLED display, offering quick access to notifications, widgets, and even camera controls without flipping open the device. The hinge design, made of titanium alloy with a basalt water drop structure, also shows Huawei’s commitment to durability, along with IPX8 water resistance, which is still rare in the foldable space.

The Pura X is equipped with a triple rear camera system featuring a 50MP main sensor, a 40MP ultra-wide lens with macro capabilities, and an 8MP telephoto shooter with 3.5x optical zoom. This setup is a game-changer for flip phones, which often compromise on camera hardware to save space. Samsung’s Z Flip line, for instance, still lacks any form of telephoto zoom, a gap that Huawei has filled with style.

The HarmonyOS Shift

Of course, no Huawei device in recent years would be complete without some caveats. The Pura X runs on HarmonyOS 5, specifically HarmonyOS Next, Huawei’s bold step away from Android. This means no native Google services and no Android app compatibility. Instead, the phone leans on Huawei’s in-house ecosystem, powered by its Pangu AI models and a new assistant called Harmony Intelligence. While this might be exciting for the Chinese market, it remains a significant hurdle for global users accustomed to the Google app suite.

Performance-wise, Huawei remains tight-lipped about the chipset, though reports suggest it’s using the Kirin 9020 with the HiSilicon Maleoon 920 GPU. Combined with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, the Pura X seems well-equipped for power users.

Huawei has just introduced its latest flip phone with a brilliant design — the Pura X — and our team managed to get an early look at the device.

We’ve captured some hands-on photos, and while we’re still exploring all its features, a detailed hands-on video and review will follow soon. But here’s a quick first impression of what makes the Pura X stand out.

But before we dive into the specs, take a look at our hands-on photos of the device.

The Pura X comes with a unique 6.3-inch foldable OLED display featuring a 16:10 aspect ratio. It feels noticeably taller and more spacious than most flip phones we’ve handled. The outer screen measures 3.5 inches with a square 1:1 aspect ratio — great for quick notifications and mirror selfies. Both displays support an adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz and 1440Hz PWM dimming, making scrolling and animations appear smooth and easy on the eyes.

Huawei has paid special attention to design and durability. The phone uses a composite super-tough laminated structure, a titanium alloy support layer, and a basalt waterdrop hinge. It feels sturdy yet elegant in hand, and the IPX8 water resistance rating is reassuring for daily use.

On the camera front, the Pura X packs serious hardware. There’s a 50MP main sensor with an f/1.6 aperture, a 40MP ultra-wide camera, and an 8MP 3.5x telephoto lens. Huawei also added a 1.5MP multi-spectral red maple primary color camera. We’ve started testing some of its AI imaging features and will dive deeper in our review.

Under the hood, reports suggest the phone is powered by the Kirin 9020 chip paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The 4720mAh silicon-carbon battery supports 66W wired and 40W wireless charging, which should keep it running easily through the day.

The Pura X ships with HarmonyOS 5, with Huawei promising smoother performance and enhanced privacy features. We’ll be putting that to the test as well.

The device is available in Moon Shadow Grey, Zero White, and Magic Night Black, with stylish red and green leather-backed collector’s editions. Pricing starts at 7,499 yuan ($1,034) in China, with sales beginning March 30th.

Samsung may be the biggest name in foldables, but when it comes to real innovation, Huawei is making all the bold moves. 

The company has already given us book-style and clamshell foldable, and last year, it launched the world’s first tri-fold. Now, Huawei is back with yet another unique form factor: the Pura X, the industry’s first wide foldable smartphone.

At first glance, the Pura X might seem a little unconventional, but it actually makes a lot of sense. Think of it as a clamshell foldable, but wider. Instead of the narrow flip-style foldable, we’re used to, the Pura X gives you extra screen real estate in a horizontal format—something that could change how we use foldable phones.

Huawei Pura X Specifications

On the outside, the Pura X has a 3.5-inch OLED cover display with a 1:1 aspect ratio and a 980×980 resolution. It’s not your typical tall and narrow cover screen—it’s more of a compact, square-shaped display. 

Open it up, and you’re greeted with a 6.3-inch OLED main screen boasting a 2120×1320 resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. That extra vertical space means more room for reading documents, browsing the web, and running two apps side by side without feeling cramped.

The camera system on the Pura X is no afterthought. It packs a 50 MP primary sensor with OIS, a 40 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and an 8 MP telephoto sensor with 3.5x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom. 

On the front, there’s a 10.7 MP selfie camera. But as with most foldable, the primary camera can double as a selfie shooter.

The device is available with 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB storage. Keeping everything running is a 4,720 mAh battery with 66W wired charging and 40W wireless charging. 

The Pura X also debuts Hongmeng OS 5, the latest version of Huawei’s in-house operating system. But as usual, Huawei is keeping the chipset a mystery, refusing to disclose what SoC is powering this device.

The Pura X is also IPX8-rated for water resistance and comes with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, satellite communication, and has USB 3.1 Type-C port. 

Huaewi Pura X Collector’s Edition

Alongside the regular variant, Huawei also launched the Pura X in a Collector Edition. The device comes in a tri-color leather back cover and a few extras, including satellite communication. The Collector’s Edition is also available with 16GB of RAM and storage options of 512GB or 1TB. 

Pricing

Pricing starts at RMB 7,499 ($1,038) for the base model, while the Collection Edition comes in at RMB 8,999 ($1,245). It’s not cheap, but for a foldable with this level of innovation, it’s clear Huawei is aiming for the premium crowd.
