A new report has revealed that Huawei holds a market share of just over 5 percent in Russia. As of 2020, about 1.66 million desktop and laptop computers were delivered to the nation, out of which over 80,000 units were shipped from the Chinese tech giant.

According to an IDC report, the Russian PC market saw an overall decline of 3.3 percent year on year in 2020. Dmitry Ilyin, senior analyst at IDC stated that “The share of consumer laptop models declined 1.5%, while consumer desktop models grew 18.0% compared to the fourth quarter of 2019. These indicators correlate well with the increased demand of the population for gaming desktops, the growing popularity of all-in-one and the interest in small desktop PCs.“

Furthermore, the IDC revealed the five leaders of the Russian personal computer market, which included HP with an 18.3 percent market share, Lenovo with 18 percent, Acer with 17.1 percent. Asus with 11.8 percent, an Huawei with 5.4 percent. The Chinese brand was also among the top five companies for the laptop segment. Dmitry further added that, “In the first quarter of 2021, the personal computer market is likely to see an increase in shipments year-on-year due to logistics problems and incomplete shipment of orders in the third and fourth quarters of 2020.”

For those unaware, Huawei is a major brand in the telecom and smartphone industries. Although it is also known to make laptops and, more recently, desktop PCs as well for enterprises and businesses. At the moment, the company is focusing more on expanding its presence in the cloud computing services market and other segments as its smartphone business has been impacted by the US sanctions.

Huawei, the known consumer electronics maker, is apparently planning on expanding its sales operations in Russia. The company will do so by opening over 50 new stores across the country in 2021.

A report from SputnikNews stated that the company made the announcement earlier this week. Huawei said that “In 2021, Huawei will continue to develop its retail network and will additionally open 50 branded stores in major Russian cities: St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Vladivostok and others.” Furthermore, the smartphone maker will also be growing its customer service capabilities in the region.

These new stores will showcase and sell all the latest products launched by the company, which includes smartphones, laptops, wearables, and other IoT (Internet of Things) products as well. At the moment, there are currently only 18 physical Huawei stores present in the country. So, this move will greatly increase the scale of its operating by a notable degree.

Interestingly, these new stores will also follow the company’s ‘1+8+N‘ device ecosystem strategy that it had previously announced earlier this year. The ‘1’ stands for its smartphones, while the ‘8’ stands for PC, tablet, TV, audio, glasses, watches, locomotives, and headphones. Lastly, the ‘N’ represents the mobile offices, smart homes, sports and health, audio-visual entertainment, and smart travel products.

Huawei has brought in is research and development team from Russia to join in the development of the company’s proprietary operating system, dubbed HarmonyOS (or HongMengOS in China).

According to a GlobalTimes report, the Chinese tech giant’s Russian R&D team has around 1,500 staff in cities including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Novosibirsk. This Russian team has been in close contact with Huawei’s development partners to help the research product be “more compatible with Huawei’s mobile ecosystem.” Earlier this month, the company had announced HarmonyOS 2.0, with its beta arriving in December 2020 and smartphone roll out sometime in 2021.

While the development of its own operating system has been directly influenced by the recent pressures from US sanctions, the company has not abandoned the Android platform. For those unaware, Huawei lost access to Google mobile services back in 2019 as it faced a ban. Since then, the restrictions have been reinforced to make it harder for Huawei to gain access to US made technology.

At the moment, the company is facing an extensive ban, with its supply chain being threatened to be cut off. So the news of the Russian team working on HarmonyOS 2.0 implies that the company is rushing to get the new OS out in time before it possibly completely loses access to the Android OS system.

Xiaomi has continued to unravel its plans to expand its product offering globally and one continent it targets is Europe. Xiaomi has a growing presence in several countries in Europe and one of them is Russia. Since it made its debut in Russia in 2017 the company has grown to become one of the top 5 smartphone vendors in the country. There are indications that Xiaomi is planning to expand its presence in Russia According to Kommersant, Xiaomi and Huawei are planning to expand their network of retail stores in Russia.

Kommersant cited sources in the communications market who hinted that Xiaomi plans to open about 100 stores this year while Huawei plans to open 30 stores this 2019. The report says Huawei plans to grow its stores from 150 to 200. The Chinese market leader is said to be scouting for partners and is already in talks with Inventive Retail Group. Huawei presently has six stores in Russia, four located in Moscow and one each in Ufa and Novosibirsk. On the other hand, Xiaomi has 30 Mi stores spread across different cities and also 29 “islands” in shopping centres. Xiaomi has stores in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Samara, Tomsk, Khabarovsk and Nizhny Novgorod.

A report by GS Analytical Center in 2018 showed that Huawei is ranked second in smartphone shipments after Samsung while Xiaomi ranks fifth after Apple and Nokia.

The Honor 10i may or may not get a special launch event as the phone is sort of official in Russia already. The new mid-range phone is listed on Huawei’s Russian website with all you need to know about it save for the price.

The Honor 10i is covered in glass on both sides with the one on the rear curving to meet the frame in the middle. The front of the phone is home to a Dewdrop display with a moderately sized lower bezel and a notch at the top. The phone is available in three colors – Shimmer Red, Shimmer Blue, and Vicious Black – with the first two having a 3D color gradient effect that allows them to appear different depending on the angle you hold them.

In terms of specs, the Honor 10i doesn’t disappoint, at least for a mid-range phone from Honor. It has a 6.21-inch 2340 x 1080 display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Its screen is also certified as safe by TUV Rheinland. Under the glass hood of the phone is the Kirin 710 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage (512GB max.). There is also GPU Turbo 2.0 for improved gaming performance.

If you call the Honor 10i a camera-centric phone, we won’t disagree with you. It has a 32MP selfie camera that is housed inside the notch. The selfie camera has lots of face-adjustment features so your portrait selfies can turn out great. On the back of the phone lies the triple camera sensors – a 24MP f/1.8 primary camera, an 8MP f/2.4 ultra-wide angle secondary sensor, and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor. It can record slow-motion videos at 480fps, has AI scene detection, and can shoot long exposure nighttime photos without the need for a tripod.

The phone has dual-SIM support (nano only), dual-SIM VoLTE, and NFC. It runs EMUI 9.0.1 based on Android 9 Pie. There is a fingerprint scanner on the back and it also has support for Face Unlock. The Honor 10i has a 3,400mAh battery which charges via a MicroUSB port flanked by an audio jack and a speaker grille. Sorry, but no USB type-C on this one.

The phone is listed as “coming soon” and will ship with an unspecified free gift. Its price is also unknown. Hopefully, pricing and availability will be revealed before the end of the week.
