The statement was made by the Senior Executive at an internal conference.

Back in 2018, the Chinese tech giant had its smartphone sales surpass the 200 million mark, reaching about 206 million units shipped in total. By the time 2018 ended, the President of Huawei, He Gang, mentioned that the global smartphone market was not in an optimal state, pointing at the company’s own figures. Thus, the President mentioned that Richard Yu’s expectations are high and estimated that the target for 2019 would be between 230 million to 250 million shipments.

Huawei’s Richard Yu

Earlier this year, Huawei faced complications with the US Government when its Commerce Department put the company under the Entity List which limited its operations in the country. This marked the smartphone maker as a national security threat with data security in mind and has since also faced similar accusations in European regions as well. Undoubtedly, all of these had a major hand to play in its overall global smartphone shipments.

Huawei had many obstacles on its way to achieving its yearly goals. Many key companies like Google, ARM, and more had to end their business ties with the Chinese company due to the US Government’s actions. So the fact that the company is still set on the preconceived speculations is a testament of its own efforts.

US-China Trade Disputes (with Huawei being caught in th crossfires)

Previously, Huawei announced that it had reached its goal 64 days in advance by selling more than 200 million smartphones by just 22nd October 2019. Thus, it is highly likely that the large 230 million shipments will be met by the end of this year. Notably, the shipments are also very likely to exceed Apple’s full year sales in 2019.

Earlier, the company had forecasted smartphone shipments to be around 140 million-150 million this year. Huawei has shifted its focused towards chasing profits instead of volumes by selling more high-end phones.

The company has already shipped 73 million smartphones in the first half of this year. Last year, the company had shipped around 139 million smartphones, which was up 29% compared to the year before.

The smartphone shipments from the China-based Huawei is expected to grow even further after the launch of its latest Mate 10 smartphone series. The company is also planning to launch new models under its Honor brand, which focuses on mid-range to premium smartphones.

While the Mate 10 series has already been launched in China and selected European countries, Huawei is expected to start selling Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro in more than 15 countries and regions including Spain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia.

According to International Data Corporation (IDC), Huawei had a market share of 11.3 percent in Q2 2017, hitting double digits for the first time. The Chinese smartphone company is getting awfully close to Apple. IDC has also predicted that it will overtake Apple in global market share either this year or next.

While Apple reported that iPhones sales in the second quarter increased by 2 percent to reach 41 million, Huawei sold 38 million smartphones in the quarter, witnessing a 20 percent increase.

In the first half of this year, Huawei increased its mobile phone shipments in Southeast Asia, Japan and South Korea by more than 45%, while shipments in Europe increased by 18% year-on-year.

Read More: Average Selling Price Of Smartphones Grew By A Record 7% in Q3 2017

Now it seems that the company will try to crack the US market as it has been investing heavily in Research & Development. It has shifted its focus to high-end and mid-range products.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group had earlier said that the company has given up the ultra low-end segment. He also added that the average selling price of Huawei phones rose 28 percent in the first half of 2017.

This isn’t the first report that is predicting a shift of the balance in favour of Huawei. A report from the Taiwanese industry chain had earlier tipped that Huawei would pip Apple to emerge as the world’s second-largest smartphone manufacturer in terms of total shipments. The gap between Huawei and Apple has already been narrowed with a momentous performance Huawei posted in Q2 2017. The company recorded a total shipment of 38.5 million units representing an 11.3% share in global shipment, according to a report by research firm IDC. On its part, Apple is said to have recorded 41 million units (12% share) in shipments for the same quarter which is just 2.5 million units over Huawei’s shipment.

IDC believes that Huawei’s new AI chipset which features on the Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 Porsche Design could boost sales of the Chinese brand enough to take the iPhone maker’s current second place in the rankings. Apple’s A11 chip comes with a dedicated AI circuitry but Huawei claims to have a better chip in the Kirin 970 which packs a dedicated Neural Processing Unit. In a TV interview with CNBC, Francisco Jeronimo, research director for European mobile devices at IDC opined that Huawei is today the biggest challenger to Apple and Samsung and is growing very fast. He believes they will probably overtake Apple in the smartphone business, either this year or next year.

Some analysts believe Huawei’s rise might be temporary and would dwindle when the iPhone 8 and iPhone X sales fully kick in but IDC thinks the rise of the Chinese telecoms equipment giant will be permanent. The company is not just focused on shipping more but also raking in more profits as this isn’t just about shipping boxes. Let’s remind you that IDC had once predicted that Windows OS would be bigger than iOS but that never happened, so maybe we wouldn’t take this too seriously.

The research showed that Huawei has for two consecutive months – June and July, surpassed Huawei has surpassed Apple in global smartphone sales. With August sales looking strong for the Chinese vendor, a hat-trick for Huawei could be on the cards but that may be short-lived as the launch of the iPhone 8 billed for this month could see Apple regaining its position with greater vigor.

The report shows that Samsung, Apple, and Huawei are still the top three smartphone vendors in the world. Samsung still retains its position as the global leader with a stronger showing in the month of June. Huawei moved up to the second position in June while Apple experienced a decline in its smartphone shipment. This may be due to fans waiting for the upcoming flagship models before making their purchases.

Despite a decline in overall sales, Apple still had the best-selling models which are the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. They are closely followed by the OPPO R11 and A57 which came in third and fourth. Other devices that made it to the list include the Galaxy S8, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X, Samsung Galaxy S8+ and others.

Related: Huawei Ships 73 Million Phones In The First Half Of 2017

The equilibrium will likely shift this September after Apple release the iPhone 8 and other models it has got in the works. But this latest result is an indication that Huawei’s efforts in ramping up its global smartphone sales are yielding results gradually.

A few months back, Huawei had revealed that it is ahead on schedule to break the 100 million smartphone shipment record in 2015. Looks like the company was right indeed, as today, Huawei has revealed via its official Weibo account that it has shipped more than 100 million smartphones as of December 18, 2015. This is a new record for the company, who is currently ranked as the third largest smartphone maker on the planet.

The company has upped its game in 2015, releasing new devices every couple of months. This way, the company covered each and every price point, from low-end Honor Play 4C, mid-range Honor 7 to the powerful Huawei Mate 8! Plus, its one of the few Chinese smartphone makers to establish a strong presence in a number of international markets in Asia and Europe.

So, there’s no surprise that the company managed to ship more than 100 million units in 2015. In comparison, Xiaomi, who also had a target of 100 million units, may end up selling only about 73 million units this year.

2016 will be even more interesting for the company as a recent teaser revealed that Huawei will enter the US market with mainstream smartphones, the Honor 5X and the flagship, Huawei Mate 8. Another thing to note here is that a lot of the phones shipped this year, like the Huawei P8 (Kirin 935), Mate S (935) and the Huawei Mate 8 (Kirin 950) are running on the company’s home-grown Kirin chipsets. Next year, we can expect the company to release more devices with its own chip inside.

Only a few smartphone makers have managed to achieve this feat (ship more than 100 mil smartphones in a year), so today, Huawei joins the exclusive club that features companies like Samsung and Apple.
