Huawei partners with Leica for the cameras on its premium smartphones. Similarly, the company has partnered with French audiophiles Devialet for its speakers, resulting in last year’s Huawei Sound X.

Now, the China-based company has launched Huawei Sound, which is smaller than the Sound X in size but packs a four-speaker acoustic design and also offers a 360-degree ‘surround’ sound experience.

The speaker packs three full-range 5W drivers and a 4-inch 40W woofer. With Devialet’s Push-Push configuration, two passive radiators reinforce each other to counteract back wave vibrations and reduce distortion.

As per Huawei’s claims, the high-volume sessions at up to 90dB should offer distortion-less sound. It also supports several different sound settings which can be accessed through the Huawei AI Life app, including spatial sound.

It comes with Bluetooth LDAC for hi-res audio and auxiliary connections are included. It also supports a tap-to-transfer feature for sending from phone to speaker in an instant. However, the company has removed the voice assistant, so this is not a smart speaker in a traditional sense. This means that users can’t control playback with voice commands and the device can’t be used to control smart home devices.

The Huawei Sound is now available for purchase in the UK for a price of £199. Those who buy the device by 13th April will get £50 off as an early bird offer. With this launch in the UK, the Huawei Sound is now available in over 15 countries across the globe including China, Australia, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Spain, and Turkey.

HUAWEI Sound series of speakers are the company’s flagship smart speakers. The first model called HUAWEI Sound X was announced back in November 2019 at the MatePad Pro launch event. The firm showcased it once again at the P40 series launch event earlier this year and even introduced a Platinum edition shortly. Last month, at the Mate40 series launch event, the Chinese telecom giant unveiled the second model simply called HUAWEI Sound. Now, according to a tipster, the firm will be also launching a ‘Pro’ model. 

The HUAWEI Sound X and HUAWEI Sound smart speakers are co-developed with Devialet, a French audio technology. Huawei Xiaoyi AI voice assistant powers these Hi-Res certified speakers, and they also offer a stereo experience when two units are paired together. The design of these speakers is inspired by Apple Homepod and the only difference between the two models is their size.

Therefore, we expect the Pro model to have similar features but with some bonus features and better sound quality. Anyway, the leakster @看山的叔叔 who confirmed the existence of this product did not say anything about its features and branding. Hence, we are not sure what it will be called. But we think it could either end up as HUAWEI Sound Pro or HUAWEI Sound X Pro. 

Having said that, since the company unveiled the last two speakers at its biggest launch events of the year, the Pro model may debut at the P50 series event or maybe even earlier if the firm has plans to launch Mate X2, nova8 series, or new MatePad tablets before the end of the year.

Yesterday, Huawei officially unveiled the Mate40 series as its latest flagship smartphones for global markets. The phones were accompanied by a number of connected products as well as accessories. At the end of the event, the company announced that a dedicated China launch conference will be held on October 30 in Shanghai.

The HUAWEI Mate40 series global launch event was streamed on YouTube. At the same time, the official Weibo handle of the company shared pictures for its home audience. Once the event ended, the company revealed that a China-exclusive event will take place on October 30.

As we mentioned in the beginning, the Chinese telecom giant announced a number of products for international markets. However, two of them had already debuted in China in the month of August.

It is worth noting that Huawei will be revealing the prices for the above-mentioned products for the Chinese market at the scheduled October 30 conference. However, the pre-orders for the Mate40 series have already sold out just within 28 seconds on JD (Jingdong).

Alongside the Mate40 series, Huawei launched a number of other products including the HUAWEI Sound today(October 22). On paper, it looks like a stripped-down version of the HUAWEI Sound X whilst retaining the Devialet’s acoustic design. Accordingly, the Bluetooth Speaker starts at a lesser price.

Just like the Sound X, the watered-down variant is also co-engineered with ‘DEVIALET‘. For the unaware, it is a French Audio company that makes speakers and amplifiers with Hi-Fi audio. Also, Design-wise, it borrows the design, shape, color, buttons from the Sound X. However, it measures slightly different at 147mm(D)x186.7mm(H), and weighs 2.2kg as opposed to 3.5kg of Sound X. Huawei tags it as smaller, yet powerful speaker.

Internally, it has a 4-inch 40W woofer and 3x full-range 5W speakers to work in conjunction with the woofer. Huawei says the speaker incorporates Devialet’s SAM 2.0 technology and a 1-woofer + 2-passive unit structure. Huawei calls them Push-Push units and says they offer 55Hz-40kHz deep bass with features like overheating protection, <2% THD. There is 512MB RAM, and 8GB ROM onboard.

Further, the speaker also supports Hi-Res audio with three full-range evenly placed apart) speakers. Huawei calls it a “Devialet’s SPACE^TM  immersive Technology. This means users can feel 360° surround-sound because the SPACE intelligently classifies sound into direct sound, reflected sound, and ambient noise, via algorithm. And, this is aided by the three speakers resulting in spatial audio. That is, it supports SPACE^TM 360-degree Soundstage, Vocals, Hi-Fi, and Bass audio. These settings can be altered via Huawei AI Life App.

Other features, and Price

In terms of audio codecs, it supports Bluetooth LDAC codecs with transfer speeds up to 990kbps. Huawei says this is 3x faster than other BT speakers. For connectivity, we have Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, UPnP(BubbleUPnP, VLC, Hi-Fi cast), NFC, 3.5mm aux-in, connection guide lights, and multi-function keys at the top.

The HUAWEI Sound is priced at €199. This is cheaper than the current retail price of HUAWEI Sound X(€269.99)

At the MatePad Pro launch event in November 2019, the telecom giant unveiled HUAWEI Sound X as its premium smart speaker. This speaker is co-developed with Devialet, a French audio company. Later in March 2020, the company once again showcased it at the HUAWEI P40 series launch event. Then, the company launched a Platinum edition of this speaker in April. Now, according to a tipster, Huawei will be launching a smaller version of this speaker called HUAWEI Sound at the Mate40 series launch event on October 22.

Smart speakers are the gateway to any ecosystem. Small speakers are perfect as they are cheaper as well as don’t take much place. Amazon and Google are successful in home automation category, all thanks tot heir smaller Echo Dot and Nest Mini.

This strategy has worked out so well for them that even Apple is copying it by launching HomePod Mini. Now, according to a bunch of pictures shared by a user called @看山的叔叔 on Weibo, even Huawei will be debuting a similar product next week.

However, it will have the same design as the original model. As per the box, the new smaller version is also co-developed with Devialet and it is also Hi-Res Audio certified.

The upcoming Huawei speaker can be also paired with a second speaker for stereo sound. Further, like any other smart speaker from the company, it is powered by Xiaoyi AI voice assistant to control smart home products that support HUAWEI HiLink.

Last but not least, the speaker can also be used in Bluetooth mode and will be available in a single Starry Night (Black) color option.
