Some rumors had claimed that it would be unveiling Huawei Watch 3 smartwatch at MWC 2018 tech expo. However, Huawei CEO Richard Yu has confirmed to Tech Radar that the company is working on Watch 3, but it won’t be launching soon.

When the publication asked about the possibility of third-generation smartwatch to Yu, he replied by saying that since Huawei Watch 2 is selling well, the company is not hurrying at launching its successor edition soon. He added that the Watch 3 will be announced later without revealing a proper timeframe for its unveil. Hence, it is evident that the Huawei Watch 3 won’t be announced on March 27, the day when the company will be announcing the P20 family.

Some smartwatches even employ a combination of two or more of the above. Patents have revealed that Huawei plans to add a new method – a touch-sensitive bezel.

The patents for the new mode of controlling smartwatches have been approved by the World intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Images from the patent show how the bezel is supposed to work.

First, the bezel is divided into 8 sectors. Each of these sectors can perform a single function or be combined with another sector for a different function.

For example, swiping the top right sector clockwisely or anti-clockwisely, swipes down and up respectively. Swiping the sectors at the bottom swipes the screen left/right. You can also zoom in and out by swiping a combination of the bottom left and top right sectors in opposite directions.

The patent also reveals that the bezels will support force touch gestures, clicks, and screw gestures. There will also be buttons built into the straps.

It has been revealed that the technology can be applied to various materials such as steel, plastic, aluminium, and ceramic for the bezel; and rubber or leather for the straps.

Last year at MWC, the Huawei Watch 2 was announced but it received poor to lukewarm reviews as it lacked most of the features people liked in the first gen Huawei Watch.

READ MORE: Huawei P11, P12 Test Pages Appear on Official Website

There is no news yet about Android Wear 3.0 but Huawei is sure not done with smartwatches judging from these patents. When we would see watches sporting these new feature hit the market is still a mystery.

Mr Xu, who also doubles as Rotating CEO, was responding to a question on whether the development of end-user products like smartwatches would stifle its smartphone business. This was at the company’s Global Analyst Summit 2017 held in Shenzhen on Tuesday. “I am always confused as to what smartwatches are for when we have smartphones…..Therefore, when the smartwatch team in Huawei presents their ideas to me with great excitement, I keep reminding them to consider whether there are tangible needs [for these products] in the market,” the CEO was quoted to have said.

But come on, Huawei has two smartwatches in its kitty! The latest version, Huawei Watch 2, was released barely a month ago packing Google’s latest Android Wear 2.0. Perhaps, Mr Xu’s confusion stems from the fact that the smartwatch comes with a SIM card slot and so can be used to make or receive calls. The first generation of Huawei smartwatch powered by Android Wear was released in 2015.

Moreso, the smartwatch market has not grown as fast as it was anticipated to do and similar views have repeatedly been expressed by many analysts and smartphone company executives, who are still wondering when, or even if, smartwatches will catch on with the general public. Hopefully, that breakthrough moment would land soon and Huawei wouldn’t like to be left out of the party when the boom time arrives. Perhaps, that is what is sustaining its current efforts in the development of more wearables.

Today, in this video, we are looking at the Huawei Watch 2 Classic. It has a classier look with some extra features like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. The Watch 2, however, has the LTE connectivity and a fitness-focused design language.

The first impression about this watch is that it is bulky, just like any other smartwatch. A great thing is that it is well-built and it doesn’t seem to break anytime soon.

The watch runs on Android Wear 2.0 that has a ton of features and customization options. Just to name a few, you get NFC payments through Android Pay. Also, you can track your fitness routines through the built-in heart rate sensor and other metrics.

Another cool feature of the Android Wear 2.0 is that you can install apps directly on the watch thanks to the built-in Google Play Store. Also, you can text or make calls directly from the watch, use navigation thanks to the built-in GPS module and so on.

The user interface seems to be fast and smooth, and the watch is powered by the Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset.

The Huawei promises up to three days of battery life, with the Classic connected over the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi thanks to the built-in 420mAh battery.

Huawei Watch 2 Classic will sell for €399 in Europe, up from €379 for the LTE Watch 2, or €329 for the non-LTE model — and significantly more than LG’s Watch Sport.

More than a year later, we get a successor, the Huawei Watch 2.

The Huawei Watch 2 should have been released last year if Google had not delayed the release of Android Wear 2.0. Although the new watch brings along a number of new features apart from the updated OS, fans of the original watch might not be too pleased with the design.

Huawei announced two variants of the watch: the Huawei Watch 2 Classic with leather straps and the Huawei Watch 2 which is a sport themed variant with rubber straps. Sadly, we won’t be getting the wire mesh strap of the original. For the hands-on, we were able to get our hands on the Huawei Watch 2 Classic.

The Huawei Watch 2 has a smaller screen than the first-generation Huawei Watch. Both versions have a 1.2-inch AMOLED display with a 390 x 390 resolution as against the 1.4-inch (400 x 400) of the original. The smaller screen is not the only change, the bezels are also thicker and are marked like a tachymeter.

The bezel is where the antenna of the watch is located which is a good thing as that means you can change the straps unlike the LG Watch Sport which has its antenna embedded in the straps.

Why Huawei decided to settle for this design is best known to them but some people say they might have had plans for a rotating bezel but later decided against it. The result is a chunky watch 12.6mm thick and weighing 47g (excluding the straps) with markings you probably might never find use for.

You’d think Huawei would have thought it wise to include a crown since the bezel wasn’t designed for navigating the watch. Sorry to burst your bubble. You will have to navigate through the watch with your finger which is pretty uncomfortable since the display is smaller. If you have thick fingers, you’d probably be covering a large chunk of the display while navigating.

READ MORE: Huawei P10 Hands On & First Impressions Video

The Huawei Watch 2 has some new features. There is LTE but only available on select color options of the Huawei Watch 2 (Dynamic Orange and Carbon Black ) and not the Classic. The watch now has an IP68 rating, so you can immerse it in water up to 1.5m in depth for 30 minutes.

The Huawei Watch 2 has 4GB of storage like the original but a larger 768MB of RAM. There is a heart rate sensor, compass, gyroscope, and a barometer. Huawei has also put a larger 420mAh battery in it.

To sum it up, the Huawei Watch 2 is disappointing with respect to design. The situation is akin to a movie sequel with a bigger budget that fails to live up to the original.

The Huawei Watch 2 joins LG’s smartwatch as the first two watches which runs on Google’s Android Wear 2.0.

Apart from Google’s latest OS running inside the Huawei smartwatch, the Watch 2 comes with a sportier body and equally has a Classic model with a black paint job and leather straps. The Watch 2 sports a circular 1.2-inch face. The display is surrounded by etched ceramic bezels which add a premium feel to the device. It is powered by a Snapdragon 2100 chipset and features NFC which can be used for Android Pay. There is also the prospect of LTE support onboard, depending on your region.

The Watch 2 is a complete fitness band, packing features like heart rate monitor, fitness features for monitoring activities like running, cycling or working out on the treadmill. There is also IP68 level of protection against water and moisture, so there is no cause for concern about using the device in wet conditions. Huawei did well in cramming a large 420mAh battery inside the device which can last up to 25 days under the Watch mode. Under normal usage, though, the smartwatch can last up to 2 days.

Previous rumors have hinted that the company may also unveil Huawei Watch 2 smartwatch. Evan Blass, the well-known leakster has now revealed the alleged press renders of Huawei Watch 2 which reveals that it will be coming with a sportier appeal.

According to the leakster, the Huawei Watch 2 is codenamed as “Leo.” The original Huawei Watch came with a classy appeal, but leaked press renders suggest that its successor appears to have a very sporty look. It has a rugged appeal and it features two physical buttons on its right edge. The strap of the Huawei Watch 2 seems to be made of rubber.

Another render of the smartwatch suggests that it features a SIM card slot for cellular connectivity. A report from the previous month did reveal that the Chinese manufacturer’s upcoming smartwatch would carry support for cellular connectivity.

There is no confirmation whether the smartwatch would be supporting only 3G or 4G LTE networks. With cellular connectivity onboard, Huawei Watch 2 users will be able to use it as a standalone device to make phone and receive phone calls without the need of pairing it with a smartwatch.

The Huawei Watch 2 press renders reveals that it would be coming in three color choices such as black, orange and grey (with white speckles). The device is expected to run on Android Wear 2.0 and rival with the recently announce LG Watch Sport.

Rumors from the January month have claimed that it would be a 42 mm smartwatch featuring a 1.4-inch display. Even though fresh press renders of Huawei Watch 2 hints that it would be available with a sporty appeal, last month’s leaks revealed that it will be also coming in leather and stainless steel versions.

As of this writing, there is no information available on the specifications, pricing and availability of the Huawei Watch 2. These details are expected to get officially announced at Huawei’s upcoming press event on Sunday at 5 AM PST.

Well, not until now. Huawei’s VP has indeed hinted that the company will be having a launch event at MWC 2017 but the device he tips as launching at the event isn’t the P10 or P10 Plus but the Huawei Watch 2.

The VP in his Weibo post used some hashtags to tease the impending product, some of which are #HUAWEIWATCH2. #MADE FOR FREE SPIRITS, #Huawei MWC2017. We don’t need a soothesayer to tell us that the product is most likely coming at the Mobile World Congress. The teaser also suggests that the Watch 2 would likely be for sports persons.

Not much is known about the Huawei Watch 2 but it is definitely the next gen version of the Huawei Watch released last year. The Watch 2 is rumored to come equipped with Android Wear 2.0 operating system and a 1.4-inch display. The Watch 2 is also expected with a rubber and a leather strap, two distinct types to choose from. There is said to be a 42mm diameter dial on the device and perhaps the mst spectacular is that the device would come with SIM card compatibility, enabling users to make and receive calls. In addition, the VP also hinted that Huawei will be releasing a couple of large capacity mobile power bank which would have fast charging support.

Fresh rumors indicate the Chinese tech giant would also unleash a new smartwatch that will carry support for cellular connectivity.

The first-generation Huawei Watch was launched on March 1, 2015. Its successor is now speculated to arrive almost exactly after two years after its release. Compared to the original model, the newer smartwatch is expected to come with a sportier design.

The Huawei Watch 2 is rumored as a 42 mm watch that will feature a 1.4-inch screen. It will be running on Android Wear 2.0. It is expected to be available in strap options like leather and stainless steel.

EROne of the versions of the Huawei Watch 2 is expected to come with eSIM support. With cellular connectivity onboard, Huawei Watch 2 owners will be able to access data even when there no Wi-Fi networks available. Also, it will allow its users to make and receive phone calls even when it is not paired to a smartphone. As of this writing, there is no confirmation whether the smartwatch will support both 4G LTE and 3G networks.

The Android Wear 2.0 is slated to get released through the launch of LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style on Feb. 9. Both the smartwatches have been built by Google and LG. The Android Wear 2.0 will include support for Google Assistant.

Apart Huawei and LG, HTC too is expected to be working on its smartwatch that is codenamed as Halfbreak. Rumors have it that the Taiwanese company has teamed up with Under Armour to build its upcoming smartwatch.

As of this writing, there is no confirmation on its launch date. Even though it was spotted with Android Wear 1.3, it is pegged to launch with Android Wear 2.0 if it is unveiled at MWC 2017 or later.

In the past few years, Huawei has aggressively expanded its smartphone lineup. The Chinese giant has also entered new markets, in strategic regions like US and Europe. This shows that the world’s third largest smartphone maker is keen on strengthening its position in the smartphone industry.

MWC is an important event for all tech companies and Huawei has confirmed that it will also be present at the event. As the company had nothing new to offer at CES 2016 which ended last month, its quite likely that we will see a new smartphone or wearable from the company at MWC 2016. You can also expect some existing handsets like Honor 5X and Huawei Mate 8 to be showcased at such an important event.

According to the invites sent by Huawei to the media, the company is inviting them for the “global unveiling of its newest smartphone”. It could either mean the launch of a new handset like the rumored Huawei P9 flagship & a new Huawei Smartwatch or a European reveal of an existing device like the Huawei Mate 8.

We can’t be sure which one of these will be announced at the event. So, let’s take a look at all the possible products that we can expect from Huawei at MWC 2016.

Huawei P9

So, one of the possible announcements at MWC 2016 could be the Huawei P9 flagship. This will be the successor to the popular Huawei P8 smartphone that was announced back in May 2015. The company managed to sell more than 10 million units of this model (P8 Lite) last year, so its successor will be an important device for 2016.

As far as the rumors are concerned, they paint a pretty powerful smartphone. It is said that the phone will come in four different variants, namely the Standard, Lite, Max and a special Premium edition.

The standard version is expected to come with a 5.2-inch FHD 1080p display, with Kirin 950 chip on board, a physical home button, a 3000mAh battery and 4GB of RAM. Interestingly, earlier rumors had hinted that the Huawei P9 will be the world’s first 6GB RAM smartphone. There are also rumors about a dual camera setup, but we are not sure about that.

While we are not sure about the company using so much RAM inside the device, if we had to choose, it would be the Premium edition which manages this feat. You can also expect a better camera and larger screen on this special edition. As for the Lite version, expect lower specs. Max will most likely come with a larger screen.

Huawei Watch 2

Huawei unveiled the Huawei Watch last year and it was one of the best wearables that we have seen till date. Since the company unveiled the watch around this time in 2015, it’s possible that we will see the second generation Huawei Watch 2 at MWC 2016.

Unfortunately, at this moment, we have no information about the new version. Also, given that the company updated the existing watch, with two new variants, namely Elegant and Jewel editions, it’s possible that there’s still some time before the new version launches.

Huawei Mate 8

Huawei unveiled the Mate 8 flagship last year and there’s no doubt that we will see this device at MWC 2016. The company will be keen to showcase its best device till date in Barcelona.

As for the specs, the phone comes with Kirin 950 chip with 3GB + 32GB and 4GB + 64GB memory combinations along with a large 4000mAh battery. The display will be of 6-inches with FHD 1920 x 1080p resolution. As for the camera, the Mate 8 features a 16MP rear sensor with PDAF and OIS and an 8MP front facing shooter.

Honor 5X

Another device that could be showcased at the event is the mid-range Honor 5X. The phone features an all metal body and comes with Snapdragon 615 chip under the hood along with 2GB/ 3GB RAM and 16GB storage options. It sports a 5.5-inch FHD display and features a 13MP rear and 5MP front shooters. As for storage, it comes with Android 5.1.1 out of the box.

So, these were the possible devices that we could see from Huawei at MWC 2016.

We are attending the event, so stay tuned for more details.
