Huawei announced the support for third-party applications on its smartwatch at the end of February 2021. The HUAWEI Watch GT2 Pro was the first wearable from the company to get this feature. Now, months later, the less expensive HUAWEI Watch GT2 and the HUAWEI Watch GT2e are now finally getting this feature via the latest firmware builds.

Huawei is rolling out new firmware builds for the HUAWEI Watch GT2 and HUAWEI Watch GT2e units. These new software builds bring support for third-party applications.

But unfortunately, the fresh firmware builds are only available for testers, reports ITHome.

The software builds that enable third-party app support are as listed below.

• HUAWEI Watch GT2 42mm – 11.0.14.57 (Closed Beta Testers – China)
• HUAWEI Watch GT2 46mm – 11.0.14.77/78 (Open Beta Testers – China)
• HUAWEI Watch GT2e – 11.0.14.25 (Closed Beta Testers – China)

Apart from adding support for third-party applications, the above-mentioned firmware builds also add an ability to check heart-related data directly on the smartwatch itself.

The latest software builds for the HUAWEI Watch2 and HUAWEI Watch GT2e should make their way to the stable channel once the beta testers don’t find any major bugs. They should be also available in international markets later.

Having said that, though third-party app support sounds big, there are only a few applications to try out.

Reports of the arrival of Huawei Watch GT2 in India have been doing the rounds of the internet for quite some time now. But no official word around a tentative launch date was available so far. Huawei India just updated its official website with the ‘Notify Me’ button for the Watch GT2 earlier today. The link opens a pop-up window leading to the launch page on Amazon and Flipkart.

It is hardly surprising that Huawei plans to launch the Huawei Watch GT2 here in India, considering the first-generation Watch GT is among the best-selling smartwatches in the country. Huawei Watch GT2 will be available on both Flipkart and Amazon India. The smartwatch was first unveiled during the IFA 2019 tech exhibition in Berlin, Germany in September.

The Huawei Watch GT2 is available in two variants, 42 mm and 46 mm. While the 42 mm variant features a 1.2-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 390 x 390 pixels. The 46 mm variant sports a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels. The GT2 draws power from a Kirin A1 chipset, which is the world’s first dual-mode BT/BLE Bluetooth 5.1 SoC with Huawei’s patented BT-UHD protocol, capable of transmission speeds of up to 6.5MBps. It is based on Huawei’s in-house Isochronous Dual Channel transmission technology for low power consumption and low latency and 365 MHz audio processing for quick and stable Bluetooth connectivity along with accurate video and audio synchronization. The smartwatch is waterproof up to 50 meters.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.1 BR/BLE/EDR, GPS, and features a range of sensors including optical heart rate sensor, geomagnetic sensor, gyroscopic sensor, accelerometer sensor, ambient light sensor,  and air pressure sensor. The Watch GT2 has dedicated power and function buttons. The device draws power from a 455 mAh battery and runs on Google’s Wear OS-based Lite OS. While the 46mm variant offers 14 days of continuous backup on a single charge, the battery on the 42mm lasts for seven days.

Huawei will release the Mate 30 series on September 19 in Munich, Germany. The Chinese company is also expected to launch the Huawei Watch GT 2 during the conference. Ahead of the launch, the real-life picture of the Watch GT 2 has leaked online showing us the design.

The Watch GT 2 is the second-generation model of the premium Huawei Watch GT that was launched last year. From the picture, we can see that the Watch GT is not different from the Watch GT2 in terms of the design. It comes with two control buttons at the side which looks more sturdy than those on the Watch GT. The watch also comes with the same brown leather strap on the first-gen model.

In terms of the specifications, the Watch GT 2 is said to pack a Kirin A1 chip and would run on HarmonyOS. This will make the smartwatch the first watch to run on Huawei’s custom OS. In addition, the watch is also said to feature support for pairing with iOS and Android devices, support phone address book, sleep monitoring, Bluetooth call, remote control camera and other functions. The watch will equally come in Sports and Classic versions.

The Huawei Watch GT is made of 316L stainless steel with ceramic bezels and the Watch GT 2 seems to retain this build. It may equally retain the OLED screen panel but we can say if the screen is bigger than 1.39 inches which is the size of the earlier model. We expect other features found on the Watch GT like a durable battery, GPS, always-on screen, water-resistance and more.
