A few days before the event, we got to know that iPhone 13(tentative) will feature an LTPO display with high refresh rate screens. And now, more a tipster on Twitter hints at the inclusion of under-screen Touch ID on future iPhones.

A tipster on Twitter with username @L0vetodream(via PhoneArena) has posted a tweet that reads, “MESA uts for iPhone“. To this, well-known tipster Jon Prosser has replied that “MESA” stands for “Touch ID“, and “uts” refers to “under the screen“. However, neither of them have mentioned if it will be on iPhone 13, or other future versions. That said, this corroborates with earlier leaks of Apple working on under-screen Touch ID solutions.

Previously, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had said that Apple was planning to launch at least one iPhone in 2021 with both Touch ID and Face ID on it. While some rumors said iPhone 12 series could have it, it didn’t turn out to be true. Having said that, rumors so far say Apple is reportedly working with Qualcomm to modify the ultrasonic fingerprint solution. The under-screen solution of Apple is likely to have a larger touch sensing area while drawing less power.

As is the case with every other technology, Apple would want to perfect the solution before debuting it. And if that happens, Apple’s next-generation iPhones will emphasize more on the display part. As we already know, early reports of the iPhone 13 indicate that it will have a 120Hz refresh rate screen(finally!). Additionally, it will adopt the LTPO(Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) display designed by Apple.

Whether or not Apple decides to include both of them on the next iPhone is something we will have to wait and see. However, considering the cost that’s probably involved, there is a chance that it could debut on the “Pro” models alone. Before finding its way to all the iPhones.

Up until now, there is no commercially-available phone with an LCD display and an in-display fingerprint sensor even though companies like BOE and Goodix Technology have promised mass production of the technology will happen this year.

The latest news regarding the technology comes from China and it says TCL’s China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd (CSOT) has developed a new in-display fingerprint technology for LCD screens.

Called Full-Screen Single-Point In-Display Fingerprint Technology, it allows for better functioning of the infrared scanner and for better and faster recognition of fingerprints. It is also said to have an ultra-high fingerprint recognition rate that can reach the level offered by OLED displays and even has the potential to surpass it.

Another feature of the new LCD in-display fingerprint scanner technology is that it covers a larger area (about 92%) compared to the previous generation. This means you can place your finger on practically any part of the screen and it will unlock. It is also said to have a brightness of more than 450 nits which allows it to capture more details.

Huaxing says they spent two years developing the technology and have applied for more than 30 patents for it. The in-display fingerprint technology is expected to enter mass production this year while an improved version that supports multiple fingerprints at the same time will be announced next year.

There is no mention of which manufacturers are on-board to use the technology for their phones but we hope to see the first set of phones with LCD displays and in-screen fingerprint sensors on the market this year.

About a year ago, there were reports that phones with LCD displays will also have in-display fingerprint scanners in 2019 but none has been announced yet.

Back in April, it was reported that the world’s LCD display with an in-display fingerprint scanner has been developed. Now a video of a Huawei phone rocking the new technology has surfaced on the web.

The alleged Huawei phone is hidden in a case that hides the bulk of the design but we can see it has no notch nor punch hole. Based on this, we presume it has a pop-up selfie camera.

#Huawei
This is an LCD screen fingerprint technology based on the infrared camera solution, which can basically ignore the LCD panel type and unlock the speed for 300ms. pic.twitter.com/gDb61I7GIt

The unlock process is put at 300ms, a little faster than that of the OnePlus 6T which unlocks in 0.34 seconds.

We do not know if this is a prototype phone designed for the sole purpose of testing the LCD in-display fingerprint sensor technology or this is a Huawei phone set to launch soon. If it is the latter, more details should surface soon.

The official Weibo account has released images of the phone’s retail box, official case, and merchandise. The case, in particular, confirms some key details.

The Redmi K20’s retail box will have a dual color design. The lid is black while the main box itself is purple. Underneath the box is an image of the Redmi K20 demon king.

There is also a photo of the phone’s official case. It is purple just like the box and also has an image of the demon king. There is a long cutout in the middle for the cameras. This singular design nullifies all the renders we have seen which show the phone’s cameras are on the left side.

[envira-gallery id=”253677″]

The Redmi K20 is expected to have a triple camera setup. The length of the cutout is just the right length for three cameras and an LED flash which means there is no rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The case doesn’t have a cut-out for a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, therefore the Redmi K20 has an in-display fingerprint scanner and hence, an OLED display. The case also shows the phone’s power and volume buttons are on the right side of the frame.

Redmi also shared a photo of branded t-shirts which it might give away to lucky fans.

The Redmi K20 will launch first in China and make its way to India. It will take on the OnePlus 7 and boast features such as a Snapdragon 855 processor, a pop-up selfie camera, and a triple camera setup.

Nowadays, in-display fingerprint sensor has become a trendy feature and is not just limited to flagship smartphones. Even the premium mid-range smartphones have also started offering the in-display fingerprint sensor.

But to offer the in-display fingerprint sensor, the smartphone manufacturer needs to use an OLED display. So what happens is that with the help of the visible light camera and the display panel, light transmittance of the OLED panel is used to “photograph” the fingerprint.

However, the LCD panels are not naturally capable of transmitting light thus, instead of using the LCD panel, the smartphone manufacturers have to rely on the OLED panels to offer in-display fingerprint scanner feature. But, that could change soon.

After continuous efforts from the manufacturers, a major breakthrough has been achieved in the LCD-based in-display fingerprint sensor solution. Fortsense has announced that it has successfully developed in-display fingerprint sensor for the LCD panels.

The R&D team of R&S claims that they revised and improved the fingerprint optical path scheme through continuous modification and improvement of the LCD backlight panel. This solved the display effect, fingerprint imaging effect and other related issues.

Further, the company seems to have adopted an algorithm-based approach. It uses the deep learning neural network algorithm for optimization and recognition of fingerprints quickly on the LCD panel. As per the company, the fingerprint recognition rate is comparable to the traditional fingerprint sensors.

This is a major breakthrough as the costing of LCD panel is much cheaper than the OLED panels. Also, the usage of LCD panels is also much more than OLED displays. If this works out well, then we should be getting a budget smartphone with in-display fingerprint sensors by the end of next year.

Last week, HMD Global Oy finally released an update that is said to fix the issue with the scanner. While some reported things have improved, the update appears to have broken that of another user. The phone practically unlocks using anything.

The affected owner who goes by @decodedpixel on Twitter shared a video showing the issue with the Nokia 9’s in-display fingerprint scanner. The phone was unlocked with an unregistered fingerprint and even a packet of bubble gum! He even adds that he was able to unlock it with a coin and leather gloves too.

Here is my Nokia 9 Fingerprint sensor issue, phone can be unlocked using a chewing gum packet or someone else's finger. Even unlocked with a coin or leather gloves.

The issue didn’t go away even after re-enrolling a new fingerprint. There is no statement yet from HMD Global on the issue.

One thing we did notice is that there is a glass screen protector on the device. While screen protectors do interfere with the performance of in-display fingerprint scanners, it shouldn’t actually be unlocked by anything but require multiple attempts to be unlocked by the right fingerprint.

HMD Global might have to release another update that fixes the issue if its a widespread one or replace the phone or get it fixed if it’s just this user that is affected.

The folks at XDA-Developers who are known for digging up details about upcoming phones from firmware files and similar sources said they found evidence of three new devices that Xiaomi is currently hardware testing. The devices are codenamed “pyxis”, “bamboo_sprout”, and “cosmos_sprout”. The last two are confirmed to be Android One phones as all Android One devices have “_sprout” in their codenames.

It is said that the three phones are being tested with “fod” which is short for fingerprint-on-display a.k.a in-display fingerprint scanners. The three phones may also have 32MP front-facing cameras with 4-in-1 pixel binning as the hardware test reveals the phones have an image output resolution of 32MP (6560 x 4928) for the front-facing camera.

The rest of the specs are still unknown but it is suggested that “pyxis” might be the MIUI version of either “bamboo_sprout” or “cosmos_sprout”. The phones will most likely be powered by different processors. The Mi A2 has a Snapdragon 660 processor and there are lots of chipsets to choose for its successor. There is the Snapdragon 670, the Snapdragon 675, the Snapdragon 710, and the Snapdragon 712 which debuted on the Mi 9 SE.

The Mi A3 Lite also has a fair number of processors to choose from such as the Snapdragon 632, Snapdragon 636, or even the Snapdragon 660. All three phones will be available in different RAM and storage configurations and should have at least dual rear cameras. They should also run Android Pie out of the box.

It is not surprising that these mid-range phones will have in-display fingerprint scanners. About a month ago, Xiaomi’s product manager said more mid-range phones released this year will have the feature. The upper mid-range Mi 9 SE has an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The new Android One phones are not expected until July or June at the earliest.

They will be joined by the Mi 9 and the Mi 9 Explorer Edition in a few days but it seems the feature might make its way to mid-range Xiaomi phones this year.

The info comes from Xiaomi’s product manager, Wang Teng Thomas, who disclosed in a Weibo post yesterday that their goal for 2019 is to bring the “Fingerprint on Display” feature to more mid-range models.

There is no info on which of Xiaomi’s upcoming mid-range phones will have it. The Redmi 7 Pro expected to launch soon has its fingerprint scanner on the rear. The devices we can think of right now include the Mi MAX 4, the Mi 9 SE, Mi 9 Lite (if there is one in development), and maybe even the successor to the Mi 6X.

The post also revealed why the Mi MIX 3 which was released back in November doesn’t have an in-display fingerprint scanner while the Honor Magic 2 which is also a slider phone has it. The reason according to Mr. Thomas is due to the differences in the design and structure of the slider in both phones. He said he will provide a proper explanation next week.

The Mi 9 which launches on Wednesday will come with a new generation in-display fingerprint scanner which is 25% faster than the last generation. It also has a larger scanning area and has been optimized to work better with dry fingers and under low-temperature.

The images showed only the back of the phone which has a triple camera setup. It also didn’t have a visible fingerprint scanner which confirmed that the Mi 9 will have an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Another image of the phone has leaked online but there is a major difference between it and the first one. The new photo is said to be of a Mi 9 prototype. The device is enclosed in a special case that completely hides the design of the phone save for cut-outs for certain parts.

The Mi 9 prototype has a triple camera setup too and it is in the same position as the live image that fist leaked. In addition to the camera cut out is a larger hole for a fingerprint scanner.

Does this mean there are two versions of the Mi 9? Yes. It has already been reported that there will be an Explorer Edition and just like the Mi 8, we expect significant differences between the regular Mi 9 and the Mi 9 Explorer Edition.

The plausible explanation is that the version with an in-display fingerprint scanner will likely launch as the Mi 9 Explorer Edition or the Mi 9 Pro while this prototype with a fingerprint scanner on its back is the regular variant.

The image also shows the case with two holes at the top right corner. We practically have no idea what the holes are for and if this wasn’t already rumored to be the Mi 9, we would say this is the Essential PH-2 and those holes are connectors for the Essential 360° VR camera or the Essential Audio Adapter HD.

Will you buy the Mi 9 if it does have a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and not an in-display scanner? Do let us know.

While it sure is exciting news, a new report says you might have to sacrifice protection if you want to use the feature.

According to Armadillotek, a US-based phone accessory maker, the in-display fingerprint scanners of the Galaxy S10 phones do not work with a screen protector.

We have tested our cases on real #GalaxyS10 phones. The in-screen fingerprint does not support screen protector. So our vanguard will have no built in screen protector

— Armadillotek (@armadillotek) January 16, 2019

Armadillotek has a rugged case called the Vanguard series which comes with a built-in screen protector. However, based on the new development, they have announced the case will not come with a built-in screen protector even though the listing on their site says so.

We believe Samsung is aware of this already and might come up with its own screen protector that doesn’t prevent the in-display fingerprint scanner from working. However, bear in mind that this is just speculation and you may have to use the phone without a screen protector if you want to use the fingerprint sensor.

According to Korean Media, ET News, Samsung will launch three Galaxy A-series phones with under-display fingerprint scanners this year. The three phones are the Galaxy A90, Galaxy A70, and the Galaxy A50. Based on their names, we can assume the Galaxy A90 will be the most powerful of the three.

The source says Samsung already has suppliers for the sensor and modules ahead of the phones’ release in the second quarter. Aegis Technology is said to be the manufacturer of the sensor module which is optical and not ultrasonic like Qualcomm’s. Mass production will be handled by Partron and Mcnex.

Other than these three, Samsung is reported to have six other models planned for this year too. These will likely come with side-mounted and rear-mounted fingerprint scanners. The Galaxy A-series will also come with multiple rear cameras with some having Time of Flight (ToF) 3D sensors.

Samsung is trying to grow its market share in the mid-range category, so its strategy is to bring flagship features to its less-expensive models.

The renders are courtesy of OnLeaks and include a video that shows the phone from all angles.

The Huawei P30 has a bigger display said to be about 6.0 inches in size. It still has a notch but it is a dewdrop notch like that of the Mate 20. The resolution is put at FHD+. The P30 Pro doesn’t have a front-mounted fingerprint scanner like the P20. There also isn’t one on the back which means it will come with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The rear of the phone is covered in glass with a gradient color design. Arranged vertically is a triple camera setup with a dual LED flash below the sensors. The camera housing is raised and there is Huawei’s branding at the bottom.

[envira-gallery id=”230815″]

The Huawei P30 has a type-C port flanked on the left by a 3.5mm audio jack and on the right by a speaker grille. It also has the volume rocker and a bright red power button on the right side of the frame.

The phone should come with a Kirin 980 processor under the hood and be available in multiple RAM and storage configuration. However, there is a rumor Huawei’s next chipset is called the Kirin 985 which should be a slightly more powerful version of the Kirin 980. It also announced a new technology called DSP Acceleration, in collaboration with Qualcomm.

The 4th generation in-display fingerprint technology is said to be 40% faster than the previous gen which is found in the Vivo X21. It also unlocks faster under bright light – taking only 0.35s to unlock the phone. The new fingerprint scanner is said to be present in the newly announced Vivo X23 upper mid-range phone. It has a large F/1.5 aperture and a 720dpi ultra-high resolution.

Vivo also worked with Qualcomm on a new project called DSP Acceleration Technology to make in-display fingerprint scanners work faster and better while maintaining a high-security level.

Speaking at the event, Qualcomm’s Senior Director of product management, Tim Yates, said the new technology works with the Snapdragon 670 which brings a 1.8x increase in performance when compared to the Snapdragon 660. The chipset also comes with the Hexagon 685 DSP which is at the heart of the technology. This is the same DSP in the Snapdragon 845.

The DSP is faster at processing neural tasks and fingerprint data when compared to the CPU. By allocating the task of unlocking the phone via the fingerprint scanner to the DSP, the data is processed faster which means the phone is unlocked faster. The Hexagon DSP works with Qualcomm’s Trusted Execution Environment on the CPU for security and the result is DSP Acceleration Technology which is up to 3x faster than when it is just the CPU handling the task.

Vivo says DSP Acceleration Technology will roll out as an update to the Vivo X23 in October. It will increase the unlocking speed of the fingerprint scanner by up to 30% especially in conditions when the temperature is low and the fingers are dry or in conditions where there is strong direct light.

Vivo says it has been hard at work since it debuted the in-display fingerprint scanner on the Vivo Xplay6 last year and it has applied for over 140 patents relating to hardware and software of the technology, making them a leader in the industry.

Vivo released the first commercially available phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner, the Vivo X20 Plus UD in January of this year. At MWC 2018, it showed off the Vivo APEX which has an in-display fingerprint scanner that covers up to 40% of the screen.

Vivo’s X20 Plus UD released at the beginning of the year as the first commercially available phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner is now joined by phones from Huawei, Xiaomi, and Meizu.

While the technology does work the same way in all phones, some manufacturers have adopted special ways to make it faster and less power draining. One of such manufacturers is Xiaomi whose in-display fingerprint technology present in the Mi 8 Explorer Edition and Mi 8 Pro adopts an additional feature to give it an edge over that of other manufacturers.

This post will explain how Xiaomi’s in-display fingerprint technology differs from that of Vivo. For this comparison, we’ll be pitting the Vivo X21 UD against the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition as they both use the same fingerprint sensor which is supplied by Goodix and Synaptics.

[envira-gallery id=”213590″]

Types of fingerprint sensors?

There are two main types of fingerprint sensors used in phones. They are the optical sensor and the capacitive sensor. The optical scanner has an image sensor that captures a picture of the fingerprint on the scanner and compares it to that stored on the phone. If it matches, it unlocks the phone.

The duration from capture to unlocking is a fraction of a second. The in-display fingerprint scanner used by Xiaomi and Vivo are optical sensors so they work using the same principle.

In-display fingerprint scanner

So we have established how the optical fingerprint scanner works but when placed under the display, things are a bit different. An in-display fingerprint scanner currently only works with OLED displays as the sensor can scan the fingerprint through the OLED dots. An LCD display uses a backlight which won’t allow the sensor to see through the screen.

Vivo X21 vs Mi 8 Explorer Edition

Reviews have shown that the fingerprint scanner in the Vivo X21 UD isn’t as fast as that of traditional fingerprint scanners that are not placed under the display. It requires your finger to stay on the display for a little longer before it scans and matches. This is understandable as the whole technology irrespective of manufacturers is still new. As the technology improves, the duration taken to unlock the device should be shorter.

However, that isn’t the only flaw of the Vivo X21 UD. The scanner also uses up more power. This is because the sensor is always pinging the screen to know if a finger is present for scanning.

For the Mi 8 Explorer (and Mi 8 Pro), Xiaomi decided to find a solution to these problems. It came up with an additional sensor – a highly sensitive pressure sensor.

The pressure sensor is doing two jobs here – first, it reduces the time taken to unlock the device as you don’t have to keep your finger on the screen for as long as required by the Vivo X21. Its high sensitivity helps it detect the faintest of touches from your finger which then prompts it to wake the fingerprint sensor for scanning.

Secondly, the fingerprint sensor is only active when the pressure-sensitive sensor wakes it up. It is not constantly scanning for a finger like the Vivo X21 which means it isn’t consuming as much battery. These features give Xiaomi an edge over Vivo’s own devices with in-display fingerprint scanners.

Notwithstanding, we believe Vivo is also working on new ways to improve its next-gen in-display scanners which should appear in its devices slated for next year.

The photos also confirm some of the specs of the phone.

A New Notch

The OnePlus 6T will come with a notch like the OnePlus 6 but it won’t be a wide one. Instead, it will be the new water-drop style notch that is fast becoming the rave. Housed with the notch is a front-facing camera. We won’t be surprised if it is the same one in the One Plus 6. Above the notch is a slit for the earpiece.

In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

When OnePlus made the switch to an 18:9 display, it was forced to move the fingerprint scanner to the back of the device. If the position of the fingerprint scanner is one of the reasons why you don’t like the OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6, then you may want to consider the OnePlus 6T.

Based on what’s on the retail box, it appears the fingerprint scanner is moving back to the front. However, it won’t be in the same position as that of the OnePlus 5. Instead, it will be under the display. Yes, an in-display fingerprint scanner. We do hope the scanner on the OP6T is fast seeing as OnePlus is going with the speed marketing.

[envira-gallery id=”209732″]

The retail box is a bit different. It has a sort of marble-like appearance and not plain white like that of previous OnePlus’ devices. There is a large 6 written in front and a OnePlus logo at the top. On the left side is the name of the phone (OnePlus 6T) and on the right is an inscription that reads “Unlock The Speed”.

The OnePlus 6 will come with a Snapdragon 845 processor with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The display will be AMOLED and should still be over 6-inches in size. However, we expect it to be a bit more expensive than the OnePlus 6.

The phone will reportedly come with all the features you’d expect in a 2018 flagship.

The Nokia A1 Plus goes by multiple names in the document. It is also referred to as the A1P, AOP, and even A1 Plus Euro. It will be manufactured by FIH Mobile (Foxconn) and will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 mobile platform. The Nokia A1 Plus will add to the short list of phones with an in-display fingerprint scanner. Current in-display sensors work with only OLED display and this means it will also have an OLED display. This will be supplied by LG Display according to the docs.

There is no specific detail about the camera specifications but the documents say it has a “high risk camera”. We practically have no idea what that means but we’ll pretend they mean high-end camera.

The Nokia A1 Plus has been in development since February and was scheduled for a mid-year release. Due to production challenges, it will now launch in the second half. HMD Global is targeting the device at the European market first, so there is a chance they might announce it at IFA Berlin or at the least, a private launch in a major European city.

Some of those leaks have shown that the Mi 8 has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. So what happened to the rumors of the Mi 8 coming with an in-display fingerprint scanner?

According to a popular industry insider @MochaRQ, the Mi 8 actually has an in-display fingerprint scanner. He also confirms that it has 3D face unlock feature. However, he adds that he is not sure if Xiaomi is putting both features on the same phone.

There are reports that two versions of the Mi 8 were certified at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This may be evidence that there are indeed two variants of the phone with different biometric features. Come Thursday, we should be able to confirm.

The retail box and front panel for this anniversary model already leaked a few days ago. Now, a video has surfaced online showing the phone’s in-display fingerprint scanner in action.

The 3-second long video tries not to give much away about the design of the phone. So the only thing we see in the video is the middle part of the screen. We have no idea what the top and bottom look like.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2W9rghBfTM[/embedyt]

The scanner seems to be embedded in the lower third of the display and seems to require a bit of pressure before unlocking. It is also not as fast as the current scanners on devices.

There is no confirmation of the video’s authenticity, so we’ll advise you take it with a pinch of salt.

The Mi 8 anniversary edition is also expected to come with 3D face recognition – the first on an Android smartphone. It will have a notch where the 3D module and other sensors will be located. It is also expected to come with an OLED display and the Snapdragon 845 mobile platform.

Other manufacturers will follow suit and that will most probably be the trend for this year.

While Vivo’s X20 Plus UD uses a Synaptics’s sensor that is placed between the glass panel and OLED panel, Japan Display Inc. commonly referred to as JDI has a different approach.

This is the company’s first fingerprint sensor by the way, since they are naturally into display manufacturing. However, the display does play an important part in the way the scanner works.

Sample images of Glass-based Capacitive Fingerprint Sensor

Unlike traditional fingerprint sensors that are made of silicon and are not transparent, JDI’s sensor is made of a transparent material. It uses JDI’s Pixel Eyes technology which allows the sensor to be built right into the glass substrate of the LCD panel.

The technology has been perfected such that it can even detect the changes in capacitance caused by the recesses and ridges of one’s fingerprints when the finger touches the display.

JDI’s current sensor measures 8.0mm x 8.0mm but the company says it plans to develop larger as well as smaller sensors that will work with a variety of devices.

The Japan-based manufacturer says shipping in commercial quantities should begin within the 2018 fiscal year which ends March 2019. Chances are we won’t see it appear in devices until next year.

One key advantage JDI’s technology has over that of Synaptics is that it works with LCD displays unlike the latter which works only with OLED displays. It is safe to say JDI’s technology will not be limited to only flagship devices but also mid-range or even entry-level phones.

It is a milestone achievement by the company as it will allow full screen design phones to feature the fingerprint sensor underneath the touchscreen display.

The arrival of full screen design trend in the mobile phone industry in this year have resulted in relocating the fingerprint scanner to the rear side of smartphones. Even though the fingerprint identification feature is considered very secure, Apple has axed the feature on the newly unveiled iPhone X. Instead of the Touch ID sensor, iPhone X features the all new Face ID facial recognition feature that users can use to unlock it or securely carry out transactions through Apple Pay.

Following Apple, Android smartphone OEMs have reportedly invested on facial recognition technology to bring face scanning features on forthcoming Android phones. However, Synaptics is of the view that the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and facial scanning technology are not very convenient. For instance, if the smartphone is placed on a table, users are required to lift the phone to reach out to the rear-facing fingerprint scanner or the bring the phone near to scan the face.

Read More: Synaptics Launches FS4600 Seriess Underglass Optical Fingerprint Sensor

Clear ID by Synaptics

The Clear ID in-display fingerprint scanner by Synaptics offers the same kind of one-touch authentication that is available through conventional front/rear mounted fingerprint readers found on existing smartphones. Since it is placed under the display, it is a button-free solution. It can be used with wet, dry and cold fingerprints.

Since the Clear ID remains well-protected under the durable glass of the screen, it is a water-resistant and scratch-resistant technology. It is equipped with security features such as adaptive fingerprint template matching and verification as well as anti-spoofing technology. It is also integrated with ECC authentication and AES encryption.

Synaptics has also confirmed that the mass production of Clear ID has already begun in collaboration with a “top five” smartphone manufacturing firm. The press release by Synaptics has couple of references to “infinity display” which is the full screen technology used by Samsung on the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 phones. Hence, it is speculated that Synaptics could be working with the South Korean tech giant to make the feature available on a 2019 Galaxy flagship.

There is no confirmation on whether the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will be coming with in-display fingerprint sensor. Previous reports have revealed that the Galaxy Note 9 could be Samsung’s first phone to feature under screen fingerprint scanner.

Synaptics will be demonstrating the Clear ID fingerprint scanner at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2018. Qualcomm is also expected to unveil its under-display fingerprint scanner technology in Q1 2018.
