ASUS Becomes 2nd Most Popular Laptop Brand in India

ASUS has become the 2nd most popular laptop maker in the Indian market. A new report has revealed that the company is now one of the top notebook brands in the region with a sizeable market share.

According to an IDC report, the Taiwanese PC maker achieved a market share of 20.6 percent during the third quarter of this year. This company also saw a 9 percent growth year on year in Q3 2022 over Q3 2021. ASUS saw decent growth despite the overall market seeing a decline of 12 percent during this same period. The company also saw a rise in market share between the second quarter and third quarter. The former had it achieve a 15 percent market share.

As per Arnold Su, Business Head, Consumer and Gaming PC, ASUS India, “We are thrilled to capture the No. 2 position in the consumer notebook category in India in Q3 2022. It is a great moment for us to cherish & celebrate since our initial goal for this year was to touch 20% market share in India. With this accomplishment, we are aligned with our vision and hoping to receive newer and bigger heights in 2023 by offering customers innovative and high performance devices.”

The company had released a number of notable laptops in the region this year, which included some innovative notebooks like the Zenbook Pro Duo, Zenbook 17 Fold, Zephyrus and ROG Flow series, and Strix Scar 17 SE and other models. The brand is also aiming on expanding its existing OLED laptop portfolio as well to make the OLED display technology the mainstream choice in the near future.

India PC shipments grow 34%, hitting record 5.3 million in Q3 2021

The PC market in India saw a solid growth in the third quarter of this year. The region saw a sizeable growth in PC shipments (including tablets, notebooks, and desktops), which reached record high figures for the period.

According to a Canalys report, the overall shipments for PC surged by a notable 34 percent, hitting record 5.3 million in Q3 2021. Out of this entire sum, only 0.6 million were desktops, while the majority shipments were for notebooks that reached 3.5 million. On the other hand, the remainder 1.2 million shipments were for tablets in the period between July and September. With the overall market seeing a rise, notebook shipments also grew by 31 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, tablets and desktops saw a surge of 41 percent and 29 percent respectively during this same period. The report further added that the growth was aided by the acceleration of economic recovery in the country, especially among small to medium businesses and even larger firms as well. Canalys Research Analyst Ashweej Aithal stated that “Despite supply chain challenges, India’s PC market reported its highest shipments ever.”

Notably, Lenovo led the PC market in India with a robust 27 percent market share in Q3 2021. HP followed close behind with a 24 percent market share, while Dell, Acer, and ASUS, rounded the top five spots in the market with 13.7 percent, 7.5 percent, and 7.1 percent share respectively. Interestingly, Lenovo managed to overtake HP for the first time since the fourth quarter of last year.

India PC market sees record high shipments in Q3 2021 despite chip shortage: IDC

The PC market of India has retained its growth momentum in the third quarter of this year, despite the ongoing chip shortage. The region was an impressive 30 percent year on year growth in the category that includes desktops, notebooks, and even workstations.

According to an IDC report, PC shipments in India hit 4.5 million units, which marked the country’s biggest ever shipments in a single quarter. Notably, the 4.5 million shipment figures is higher than the entire yearly shipments from back in 2019. This was the year before the pandemic, after which, PC shipments exploded all across the globe. With the record high sales, many brand reported some of their biggest quarterly performance for PCs.

In the category, notebook PCs still dominated the segment, with a massive 80 percent share. During the third quarter, enterprise and consumer demand helped boost the Notebook category over 3 million units for the first time. Similarly, even the desktop category saw a positive trend with a 30.5 percent year on year growth in Q3 2021. Bharath Shenoy, IDC’s Senior Market Analyst for PC Devices stated that “Despite the better allocations to a few segments, the demand-supply gap continues to be a challenge as enterprises and SMBs continue to order in big volume.”

During this time, HP continued to lead in the overall PC category with a sizeable 28.5 percent market share in the market. Meanwhile, Dell arrived a close second with a 23.8 percent market share, overtaking Lenovo that had an 18.6 percent market share in the third quarter. Acer and ASUS rounded up the group with fourth and fifth spots in the market respectively.

India PC market retains growth momentum in Q2 2021, with over 50% YoY rise

The PC market has managed to maintain its strong growth rate in India into the second quarter of this year. This includes desktops, notebooks, and workstations, which saw shipments rise by 50.5 percent year on year.

According to an IDC report, the India traditional PC market shipped a total of 3.2 million units in Q2 2021. During this time, all products within the category saw a robust double digit growth rate. Furthermore, this report arrives despite a lack of large education and government deals in the region, which also marked the second consecutive quarter in which India’s shipments crossed the 3 million mark. This is also indicative of the underlying growth in the enterprise and consumer sectors.

In this category, the notebooks segment still accounts for more than three quarters of the entire market’s total shipments. Notebook PCs saw a growth of 49.9 percent year on year in the second quarter of 2021. This period also marked the fourth consecutive quarter that registered shipments crossing 2 million units. Similarly, desktop PCs also saw recovery, with shipments rising by 52.3 percent year on year after recording lowest shipments in the decade back in Q2 of last year.

The report adds that the second wave of Coronavirus had delayed the opening of schools, colleges, and other education based institutions, which in turn, strengthened the demand for PCs for home learning/online education. Back in Q1 2021, the consumer segment alone saw a whopping 118.4 percent growth year on year and 5.9 percent sequentially. Brands were also quick to prepare channels in anticipation for stronger demands. During this time, HP lead the market, while Dell and Lenovo arrived second and third. While Acer took the fourth spot, Apple and ASUS were tied for the fifth position.

India PC Market recorded its strongest quarter in the last seven years in Q3 2020

With people continuing their work and education from home, India PC Market grew 9.2% YoY in Q3 2020, as per research firm IDC (International Data Corporation). As companies managed to ship 3.4 million units. the last quarter was the strongest quarter in India in the last seven years. Also, the consumer market recorded its largest quarter ever with 2 million shipments, accounting for 41.7% YoY and 167.2% QoQ growths respectively.

That’s not all, Apple also had its biggest quarter in India by growing 19.4% YoY in Q3 2020. Also, newcomers like Avita and Xiaomi performed well. Since the reopening of schools and colleges is uncertain, the market is expected to remain strong in Q4 as well.

On the other hand, the commercial segment did not see many shipments compared to Q2. Hence, the enterprise market only grew by 3.1% YoY. Also, enterprises preferred notebooks over desktops and therefore, the former’s shipments increased by 70.1% YoY. Lastly, the SMB market witnessed a 5.5% YoY growth as certain businesses have started operating.

Talking about brands, HP led the market with a 28.2% market share with 965,000 units in shipments and 16.6% YoY growth. Lenovo came second with a 21.7% share. It shipped 744,000 units and as a result of this, the company declined the most among the top 5 players by 16.9% YoY.

Then, Dell claimed the third position with 731,000 units in shipments, 21.3% share, and 18.2% YoY growth. Acer in fourth place with a 9.5% market share was the only top brand other than Lenovo to saw a decline, 12.4% YoY to be exact by shipping 327,000 units.

Last but not least, Asus was the fifth largest PC brand in India in Q3 2020 with a 7.5% market share. It was also the best-performing brand as it achieved 55.4% YoY growth by shipping 403,000 units.
