Mosseri, who leads Instagram, is among the first major tech executives to testify in a growing wave of cases accusing platforms of harming young users. The current case targets Meta, Instagram’s parent company, along with YouTube. Similar lawsuits have also been filed against TikTok and Snap.

At the center of this particular trial is a 20-year-old plaintiff, who says she began using Instagram and YouTube heavily as a child. Her legal team argues that the platforms’ design encouraged compulsive use that contributed to depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.

Mosseri did not deny that excessive use can happen. But he pushed back strongly against the term “clinical addiction.”

When attorneys pointed to testimony that the plaintiff sometimes spent up to 16 hours a day on Instagram, Mosseri described it as “problematic use,” not addiction in a medical sense. He compared it to binge-watching a TV series.

“I’m sure I’ve said I was addicted to a Netflix show after staying up too late,” he told the court. “But that’s not the same thing as clinical addiction.” In his framing, personal factors and broader lifestyle patterns play a significant role, not just platform mechanics.

That distinction is central to the defense. Plaintiffs are trying to show that the platforms’ design directly contributed to psychological harm. Meta’s position, at least as articulated in court, is that heavy use alone does not equal medically recognized addiction, and that correlation should not be confused with causation.

Critics argue that this minimizes growing evidence linking prolonged social media use to mental health challenges among teens. US Surgeon General advisories and multiple academic studies have found associations between extended daily use and higher rates of anxiety, depression, sleep disruption, and body image concerns.

Meta, for its part, says it has introduced parental controls, time-management reminders, and youth safety features, and that it tests new features with younger audiences in mind.

Instagram is rolling out a handful of useful updates to its direct messaging service, including message translation, music stickers, and the ability to schedule messages.

Message translation has been available on Facebook Messenger since 2018, but it’s only now making its way to Instagram DMs. It’s a little ridiculous that it took Meta this long to roll it out— WhatsApp still doesn’t have it—but better late than never, right?

Now, you can translate messages in your Instagram chat by simply long-pressing on a sent or received message and tapping Translate. The translated text will appear right below the original.

Another addition to DM is music stickers. The feature lets you share a snippet of your selected song in messages. You’ll find the new Music option under the Stickers tab in your chat, where you can search for a song to share. Just keep in mind that the sticker will only include a 30-second preview of the song.

Instagram is also adding the ability to schedule messages, which should come in handy for things like birthday wishes at exactly midnight. You can long press the send button to schedule a message and select your preferred time from the available customization options.

Group chats are getting a small but useful tweak as well. Each group will now have a personalized QR code that you can share to invite others. However, group admins will still have control over who can join as they can refresh the QR code at any time to limit access.

And finally, Instagram is expanding last year’s feature that lets users pin up to three chat threads in their DMs. Now, you’ll also be able to pin specific messages within one-on-one or group conversations, making it easier to keep important texts front and center.

Following the question posed to Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the situation, his response was quite surprising. According to Zuckerberg, the responsibility for app age verification should lie with Apple and Google, not social media companies. Meta’s global head of safety, Antigone Davis, explained, “With this solution, when a teen wants to download an app, app stores would be required to notify their parents, much like when parents are notified if their teen attempts to make a purchase. Parents can decide if they want to approve the download.”

While age verification responsibility is under discussion, it’s probable that important actions will be taken soon. Still, it’s crucial to highlight that parents bear the main responsibility. The Instagram Reels download feature is quite similar to the download feature that comes with YouTube Premium, as mentioned earlier. This feature will particularly benefit those who collect their favorite Reels in the saved section. Unfortunately, despite Mosseri’s statement, this feature has not been rolled out globally yet. In fact, the company had started allowing Reels downloads to users in the United States back in June, and now it is beginning to roll out this feature to users worldwide. Of course, the Instagram Reels download feature has also brought copyright debates. However, another issue is people stealing others’ videos. YouTube and TikTok address this problem by adding a watermark logo during the download. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has launched ad-free subscriptions for its two most popular social media platforms in Europe. The new subscription option is a response to new EU regulations that require companies to offer users a way to opt out of targeted advertising.

Facebook and Instagram are now ad-free, but at a cost

The ad-free subscriptions cost €9.99 (~$10.61) per month if you sign up on the web, and €12.99 (~$13.80) per month if you sign up through the Android or iOS apps. The price difference is due to the additional fees levied by Google and Apple on their respective mobile platforms.

Since Meta is a more cohesive platform now, a single subscription will cover all of your Facebook and Instagram accounts linked to your Accounts Center. However, starting March 1, 2024, you will need to pay an additional €6/month per month through the web and €8/month through iOS and Android for each additional account in your Accounts Center.

In addition to removing all ads from your Facebook and Instagram feeds, the ad-free subscription also prevents Meta from tracking you for ads. This is a good option for users who are concerned about their online privacy.

The subscription is currently only available in the EU, but Meta may expand it to other regions if similar laws are enacted.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, is reportedly considering offering ad-free versions of its social media platforms in Europe, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. This move comes in response to new EU privacy regulations that require Meta to get users’ consent before showing them targeted ads. 

Asking users for their consent could hurt the company’s bottom line since most users are unlikely to willingly share their data. This could reduce Meta’s advertising revenue, which is its primary source of income.

To tackle this, Meta is considering charging users a monthly fee to remove ads from their social media feeds. Under the proposed plan, users in Europe would need to pay a monthly fee to remove ads from their Instagram and Facebook. This would be the first time that Meta will be charging users for access to its core services.

The ad-free subscription plan is expected to cost around EUR 13 per month on mobile devices and EUR 10 per month on web browsers. Users would also need to pay an additional EUR 6 for each additional account.

It is unclear when the ad-free subscription plan would be launched in Europe, and if it would be offered in other regions in the future. However, Meta is said to be in discussions with privacy watchdogs in Belgium and Ireland about the plan. The company has reportedly named it “subscription no ads,” or SNA, and it might start rolling out in the coming months.

This freshly-introduced feature introduces two key changes in the DM dynamic:

1. A user who intends to send a DM to someone not in their followers’ list will now be confined to a single message. They can only have an extended conversation if the recipient accepts the chat request. This will reduce the spam coming through, especially for bigger accounts.
2. Initially, DM requests can only be text-based. Multimedia messages, like images, videos, or voice notes, will only be allowed to send after the acceptance of chat request.

These changes primarily tackle the distress caused by unsought messages and media, especially for women who are often the target of unasked-for explicit content. Cindy Southworth, Meta’s Women’s Safety Head, emphasized the company’s intent: “Our primary goal is ensuring users feel both secure and empowered when they access their inbox. The update that brings these features basically offers various improvements for the platform, based on feedback from creators.

So it is clear that DMs would’ve likely been one of the most requested features. Instagram has been working on a Twitter competitor named Threads, which was leaked a few weeks back. Now, it appears the company is all set to launch it in the coming days or weeks officially.

The official Instagram Threads application from Meta is now available for pre-order on Apple’s App Store, indicating that the launch is imminent.

While the company has not yet revealed the launch date, the listing on the App Store reveals that the application could get launched on 6th July, in just a couple of days. It is being said that Instagram Threads will integrate with the decentralized social media protocol used by Mastodon, called ActivityPub.

The official description of the application on the App Store listing reads: “Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.”

It remains to be seen if the company will adopt a slower rollout for users, which is more likely to happen. So, while the app may be available for download from the 6th of July, not everyone will be able to post on the platform from that date.

Twitter has been facing a lot of issues with the platform, especially after its acquisition by Elon Musk. While there were issues with the content moderation policies, the platform has had a lot of technical problems over the past few weeks. The Messenger supervision controls will initially be available in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada through Meta’s Family Center. Parents or guardians will have access to their teen’s privacy and safety settings, be notified of any changes in their Messenger contact list, and monitor the amount of time spent in the app. They will also receive notifications if their teen reports someone; however, explicit permission from the teen is required for this feature.

Parents will be able to manage settings such as who can message their teens (friends only, friends of friends, or no one) and who can view their stories. Any changes made to these settings will trigger notifications for the guardians.

Instagram has been taking steps to limit interactions between teens and unknown adults, and the latest update involves users sending text-only invitations to seek permission before interacting with someone they are not connected to. This feature is designed to enhance safety and prevent unwanted contact.

To promote healthy digital habits, both Instagram and Facebook will introduce controls to reduce excessive usage. Instagram’s existing “Quiet mode,” which allows users to pause notifications and set auto-replies while taking a break, will now be available globally. Facebook will notify users after 20 minutes of continuous usage to encourage them to take a break, and it will also remind teens to close the app while watching Reels at night.

Meta is also introducing a new notice on Instagram, urging teens to allow their guardians to supervise their accounts for added protection. Parents will have the ability to view mutual followers and accounts followed by their teens.

Meta Platforms announced its intention to block access to news content on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada, in response to a newly approved legislation that requires internet giants to pay news publishers. 

The company made this announcement on Thursday, shortly after the Canadian Senate upper chamber approved the legislation, known as the Online News Act, which has now received royal assent from the governor-general making it an official Act.

Once the Online News Act becomes law, Meta Platforms will implement measures to restrict the availability of news articles and related content on their popular social media platforms in Canada. The move follows a global trend of tech companies grappling with regulations aimed at ensuring fair compensation for news publishers for their content.

On Thursday, the Canadian Senate approved the Online News Act, establishing guidelines that compel platforms like Meta (formerly known as Facebook) and Google to engage in commercial negotiations and financially compensate news organizations for their content.

Meta has voiced its concerns about the legislation, criticizing it as “fundamentally flawed” and disregarding the operational realities of their platforms. In response, the company announced on Thursday its decision to terminate access to news on Facebook and Instagram for all Canadian users, preempting the bill’s official implementation. The decision to limit news access is likely to impact millions of users in Canada who rely on Facebook and Instagram as sources of news.

With Meta’s announcement, the focus now shifts to how news publishers, users, and other stakeholders will navigate this altered landscape of social media news consumption in Canada. What is Canada’s Online News Act?

The Online News Act is a new legislation that aims to ensure fair bargaining between the largest digital platforms and Canadian news businesses for the use of news content on their services. 

The Online News Act establishes a more level playing field between news businesses and digital platforms, promoting fairness and sustainability in the news industry. It adopts a market-based approach, encouraging voluntary commercial agreements while preserving the independence of the press through crucial safeguards.

With millions of Canadians relying on online platforms for news consumption, these platforms have become the gatekeepers of the digital news marketplace and hence need to compensate the actual news agencies.  The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will be responsible for overseeing the Act, facilitating negotiations and arbitration processes between platforms and news businesses. Additionally, the CRTC will develop a code of conduct to ensure fairness and transparency during bargaining.

US tech firms argue that the legislation in Canada is economically unfeasible. Google has suggested amendments to address concerns, while Canada’s government has resisted making changes. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Meta and Google of employing “bullying tactics.” Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez, the bill’s initiator, stated that the government will initiate regulatory and implementation procedures following the law’s enforcement.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, took to his Instagram broadcast channel on Tuesday to make the announcement. He revealed that users in the United States would now have the ability to download Reels directly to their camera roll with a simple tap on the share icon and selection of the Download option. This new feature grants users greater control over the content they create and enjoy on Instagram. It does raise a question, if companies can let users download videos onto their devices that easily, should that option be present across all platforms?

It’s important to note that the ability to download Reels is limited to content posted by public accounts. Furthermore, public accounts hold the power to disable the download option for their Reels if they prefer to maintain tighter control over their content distribution. While it remains unclear whether downloaded Reels will bear a watermark, Mosseri’s accompanying image hints at the inclusion of an Instagram logo alongside the account name. This follows a similar approach taken by TikTok in attaching a watermark to downloaded videos. It’s worth noting that Instagram has previously allowed users to download their own Reels from drafts without any watermark, so this would be a new change.

The introduction of Reels has already proved impactful for Instagram, as Mark Zuckerberg revealed during the Q1 2023 earnings call that time spent on the platform increased by an impressive 24%. Instagram has always been a platform that strives to enhance user engagement and creativity. And now, the popular social media app has added a long-awaited feature that is sure to bring even more fun and expression to its users: the ability to respond to posts with GIFs. The announcement was made by none other than Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, during a chat with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Users can pick GIFs from Giphy, a popular GIF database

Mosseri described the new feature as a “finally feature,” acknowledging the high demand from users for this capability. With the addition of GIFs in comments, Instagram users can now go beyond words and emojis to express themselves with animated images from Giphy, a well-known GIF database.

This update comes on the heels of the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority’s order for Meta (Instagram’s parent company) to sell Giphy last year. Despite that, Instagram has decided to leverage the popular GIF platform to enhance user interactions within the app.

But that’s not all. Mosseri also revealed that Instagram is testing another exciting feature called lyrics in Reels. This feature builds upon the auto-caption sticker introduced by Meta in 2021. The inclusion of a timeline at the bottom of the interface will allow users to sync the captions accurately, enhancing the overall experience of watching and creating Reels.

Perhaps this latest addition of GIFs in comments is a sign that Instagram is actively listening to its users’ feedback. As of now, Instagram users can rejoice in the newfound ability to add a touch of animated flair to their comments and look forward to even more exciting updates in the future.

Instagram ads are quite a popular form of social media advertising that allows businesses and individuals to promote their products or services to a large audience, given Instagram’s massive user base. These ads appear in users’ feeds or stories and can be targeted based on factors such as demographics, interests, and behaviours. Instagram ads can be created and managed through Facebook Ads Manager, which provides a variety of ad formats, including photos, videos, carousels, and stories. Instagram is expanding its advertising options in a move that could benefit businesses seeking greater visibility. As part of its latest testing phase, the app has introduced a couple of new ad placements that could transform the way brands are discovered on the platform. One such placement involves sponsored ads appearing in search results when users enter specific terms, such as “makeup”, or “shoes”. These ads will be marked as sponsored and will show up in users’ feeds alongside the actual search results. The company has said it intends to make this placement available globally in the coming months.

The app is also partnering with selected brands to trial a new format known as “reminder ads”, which could provide businesses with a more direct way to notify users of upcoming events or launches. Once users opt into these reminders, they will receive notifications from Instagram one day before the event, 15 minutes prior, and when it commences. These notifications will appear like any other Instagram notification and will display on users’ lock screens.

The introduction of these new advertising options is hardly surprising given the importance of ads to Meta, the parent company of Instagram. Meta‘s advertising revenue dropped for the first time in 2022, so it is actively looking for new ways to monetize its platforms. Despite this setback, the company still earned $31.25 billion in advertising revenue in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is a social media company founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. With over 2.8 billion monthly active users across its various platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, Meta is one of the world’s largest social media companies. Mark Zuckerberg announced today on his Instagram channel that the company’s paid verification program is now available in the United States.

Those who sign up for Meta Verified will receive a blue verification badge on both Facebook and Instagram, “proactive impersonation protection,” and direct access to customer support. The program is priced at $12 per month via the web and $15 per month for iOS or Android users to account for platform fees. Subscribers will also receive stars each month that can be used to tip Facebook creators, as well as extra stickers for Stories and Reels.

In contrast to Australia and New Zealand, Verified subscribers in the US won’t immediately gain increased visibility in some parts of the apps. According to a Meta spokesperson, the company is taking the time to further explore this feature’s value and learn from user feedback before considering expansion outside of Australia and New Zealand. While continuing to test the program, Meta intends to explore other features that could be added to Verified.

Meta’s verification program differs from Twitter Blue, as it requires Instagram and Facebook users to provide government-issued ID that matches their account name and photo. Additional eligibility requirements include being 18 or older and having two-factor authentication enabled.
