Apple is gearing up for a big change in how it names its operating systems. A new report hints that the tech giant is moving away from its traditional numbering scheme for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and more, opting for a year-based approach that could make things a lot clearer for users. With a massive visual refresh also in the works, Apple’s next big reveal at WWDC 2025 is shaping up to be a game-changer. Here’s what we know so far.

A revised OS naming scheme

According to Bloomberg News (paywalled), Apple plans to name its next operating systems after the year following their release, meaning this fall we could see iOS 26 instead of iOS 19. The shift, expected to be confirmed at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9, will apply across the board to iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. The idea is to streamline things, making it easier for users and developers to keep track of updates, much like how some car models are named for the upcoming year. So, expect iPadOS 26, macOS 26, and so on, all launching with a consistent naming vibe.

But it’s not just about names—Apple’s cooking up a major design overhaul, codenamed Solarium, that’ll hit all its operating systems. Word is, this could be the biggest visual shake-up since iOS 7 in 2013, bringing a fresh look to everything from your iPhone to your Apple Vision Pro.

For iOS 26, rumors point to new tricks like external display support and a redesigned Camera app. “iPadOS 26” is expected to borrow a page from macOS with a new menu bar, boosting productivity for tablet users. While details on watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS are still scarce, the Solarium overhaul promises a cohesive, modern style across Apple’s ecosystem.

With WWDC just weeks away—scheduled to take place from June 9 to June 13—the excitement is building for Apple’s bold new direction. Will iOS 26 and its siblings live up to the hype? We’ll find out soon, but for now, it seems Apple is focused on making its software as fresh and user-friendly as possible.

As Apple gears up for iOS 19, expected in September 2025 alongside the iPhone 17 series, a new AI-powered battery optimization feature is in the works, per Bloomberg. Unlike Android’s battery-saving tools, which rely on static rules, Apple’s new system uses AI to learn from a vast pool of iPhone usage data, adapting to individual patterns like app usage and time of day. The AI dynamically manages background apps to cut power consumption, offering a personalized approach.

The feature’s timing aligns with rumors of the iPhone 17 Air, a 6.6-inch ultra-slim model potentially replacing the Plus variant, something Samsung might also be planning for its S26 lineup. At under 6mm thickness, the iPhone 17 Air’s battery could be even smaller than the iPhone 16’s 3,561mAh unit. Apple reportedly aims to offset this with AI-powered smarter resource management.

If everything goes right, Apple could still ensure all-day battery life with the upcoming Air model despite the compact cell. Apple’s AI for battery optimization is reportedly being trained on real-world data, giving it a head start. For those interested, here’s our roundup of the iPhone 17 Air.

This new concept of smarter resource management appears promising. While Samsung hasn’t explicitly mentioned using AI for this purpose, the Galaxy S25 Ultra performs impressively in battery drain tests—holding its own against Chinese flagships with 6,000mAh+ batteries—without any noticeable performance drop throughout the test.

This battery optimization feature in iOS 19, likely powered by Apple Intelligence, could set a new standard, especially for the A19 chip’s efficiency in the iPhone 17 lineup. Fans on X speculate it’ll debut with watchOS 12 and macOS 16 too. Will this AI-driven approach keep the iPhone 17 Air powered up, or is Apple banking too much on software to fix hardware limits? We’re excited to find out.

But if a new leak is to be believed, iPhone users could soon get a taste of its design philosophy—without having to shell out thousands of dollars.

Jon Prosser, known for his Apple leaks, recently shared a scoop on his Front Page Tech YouTube channel, claiming that iOS 19 will bring a redesigned camera app that borrows heavily from VisionOS. While Prosser refrained from showing direct footage—presumably to protect his source—his team created animated renders of the updated UI based on what he saw.

A Cleaner, More Streamlined Camera Interface

The purported redesign introduces translucent menus for camera controls, allowing for a larger and more immersive viewfinder. Instead of cluttering the interface with an array of toggles, the new design simplifies things with two primary options at the bottom: Camera and Video.

Image: Front Page Tech (YouTube)

Tapping each category expands a selection of relevant settings, including aspect ratio, depth, styles, exposure, and timers. Resolution and frame rate settings, which were previously more accessible, are now tucked away at the top of the screen.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not imagining things. A similar leak last year suggested that iOS 18 would bring a Vision Pro-like camera app update, but that never materialized. It’s possible the feature was simply delayed rather than scrapped altogether.

Is This the Beginning of a Larger iOS Redesign?

While a refined camera app is a noteworthy update, the bigger question is whether this signals a broader UI overhaul for iOS 19. Prosser explored this idea with a render featuring circular icons. However, he concedes that this may be an overreach.

According to him, Apple is more likely to introduce VisionOS-inspired elements within core apps like Camera, Music, Notes, and Wallet rather than implementing a full-fledged redesign across the entire system. This would allow Apple to ease users into a new design paradigm without disrupting the familiarity that keeps millions of iPhone users loyal to iOS.

And if Apple truly believes the VisionOS aesthetic is superior, rolling it out incrementally makes sense. A sudden overhaul could alienate users who prefer consistency over change.
