Other than getting to know more about the processor, battery, Type-C connector, the most awaited bit, from the eyes of the affected lot, is iFixit’s take on the ongoing “Jelly Scrolling” fuss. While the teardown experts suggest this effect is normal, the wobbling is surprisingly much more noticeable on iPad mini 6.

iFixit notes that it is a natural behavior for LCD and OLED displays to exhibit similar display wobbling but it also appears that the jelly scrolling on iPad mini 6 isn’t as minimal as others and is indeed a pain. However, it still remains unclear as to what could be the reason behind its occurrence but it is highly likely to be because of a specific board placement. This means, that there’s no imminent solution to this problem and iPad mini 6 users will have to continue facing the jelly scrolling issue.

The short video of iPad mini 6 disassemblies by iFixit suggests that A15 SoC used is downclocked a bit when compared to what it is in the iPhone 13 series. It is easier to remove the USB-C connector on the new iPad mini when compared to the previous generations. The battery still being adhered to the chassis indicates that early rumors pointing towards Apple mulling a similar move with the device’s battery were void.

iFixit gives the device a 3 out of 10 and claims that the new device is slightly more repairable. The preliminary video doesn’t dive into much detail but a full teardown can be expected in the coming days.

This makes the scrolling stuttery where one part of the display refreshes at an abnormally slower rate. But as it turns out, this may not be an issue after all. Apple believes there’s nothing wrong with the screen and this is expected behavior on LCD panels.

There have been multiple reports that suggest a wobble effect kicks in the iPad mini 6 and at first, it felt like a software bug. Despite this being an annoying event, the company states that the “jelly scrolling” effect is completely expected on LCD screens. Apple blames the LCD panels “do refresh line by line,” which causes a delay between lines.

Here is is slow-mo video of scrolling on the iPad Min i slowed down EVEN MORE in a frame-by-frame step through. Notice how the right moves up faster than the left.

In normal usage you barely see it, but every now and then it become noticeable. In landscape it goes away entirely pic.twitter.com/iq9LGJzsDI

— Dieter Bohn (@backlon) September 22, 2021

Contrary to what Apple says, the “jelly scrolling” effect is negligible and hard to notice on other iPad models having 60Hz LCD displays, including the iPad Air 4. Not just Apple, but devices with LCD panels from other brands don’t seem to have this issue either.

But now that Apple has cleared the air on the “jelly scrolling”, there’s no way iPad mini 6 users can expect a repair or replacement and will, unfortunately, have to bear with the wobbling display. For the ones who are still under the 14 days window of refund, if you happen to face this issue, getting it returned appears to be the only wise option as of now.
