Apple has released a new security update for its iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and Apple Watch to address two zero-day vulnerabilities. Zero-day vulnerabilities are security flaws that are unknown to the software vendor and have not yet been patched. The vulnerabilities addressed in the latest update are CVE-2023-41064 and CVE-2023-41061. They allow attackers to install malware on a device by loading a malicious image or attachment. The malware can then be used to steal data, track the user’s location, or take control of the device.

These vulnerabilities were first reported by the Citizen Lab, a spyware research group, at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto. Not in the know, Pegasus is a powerful spyware tool that infects a phone and sends back data, including photos, messages, and audio / video recordings.

So it’s recommended that all users update their devices to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS as soon as possible. The updates can be downloaded from the Settings app. 

This is the second zero-day vulnerability that Apple has patched in recent months. In July, Apple released an update to address a zero-day vulnerability that was being exploited by attackers to install malware on iPhones and iPads.

However, even as the latest iPads feature Apple’s shiniest Apple M1 silicon, many users still opt for the Macbook as their daily driver for laptop-related needs, because of one vital difference: the Macbooks run on macOS and the iPads run on iPadOS.

Nevertheless, the reality might change soon, as recent news indicate that Apple is currently researching bringing the macOS experience to its future iPads.

This news comes from the folks over at Patently Apple, as the team had discovered on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office database that Apple was recently awarded a detachable laptop-like iPad experience, running on a macOS-like experience.

Let’s start off with the form factor, the iPad shown off the patent is a tablet and has a hinged keyboard accessory(which does not look like the Magic Keyboard) that allows the tablet to be seamlessly mounted onto the keyboard via a specialised coupling mechanism. The keyboard also works as a case that protects the iPad screen from external conditions, similar to what you will find on a laptop.

Next is the software experience, according to the patent illustrations, the iPad will feature a macOS-like user interface to elevate the user experience with the keyboard. However, will this affect your current iPadOS experience as an Apple user? The patent also addresses that problem as well, as it seems that the macOS-like user interface is available when mounted to the keyboard and that your conventional current iPadOS user interface is also available when not mounted to the keyboard.

Another additional detail the patent reveals is also that the Apple Pencil can now be housed within the hinge that mounts the iPad to the keyboard. The port connection interface like USB-C will also be installed onto the hinge. 

As for the camera, projectors, light and microphone, the patent reveals that Apple is going with a rather odd approach as these features are seen as additional accessories instead, which are then mounted onto the hinge if needed, and dismounted when not.

Apple today announced its much-anticipated list of the most downloaded apps across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch. Unsurprisingly, the most popular free iPhone app in the United States was TikTok in 2021, while Procreate was the most popular paid app. As for free games on iPhone, Among Us secured the top rank, while Minecraft dominated the paid games realm.

The Cupertino-based tech giant also announced App Store Award winners, with children’s app maker Toca Boca winning iPhone App of the Year for “Toca Life World,” and Riot Games’ “League of Legends: Wild Rift” being declared the iPhone Game of the Year.

Typically, award winners are relative newcomers and are lauded for having taken advantage of Apple’s tech in innovative ways. However, with “Toca Life World,” the strategy seems to be a bit different this year. Its developer – Toca Boca – celebrated its ten-year anniversary this March, having released over 40 kids’ apps. Apple has accordingly praised the app maker for “masterfully iterating on the art of play and self-expression for kids.”

The past year has been rather tough for the Apple App Store owing to increased regulatory scrutiny and various lawsuits concerning its commission-based business model. The Epic Games case, for example, is still ongoing. As a result, Apple was forced to reduce commission in some cases and even adjust its policies. But despite this, its overall quality of apps remains high, especially when compared to that of Android.

Apple has been making the iPad more and more powerful with each iteration and the recently launched iPad Pro, which comes powered by the Apple M1 chipset, the technology giant is blurring the lines between the iPad and MacBook.

Despite the most powerful iPad and the MacBook being powered by the same chipset — Apple Silicon’s M1, there’s remains one major issue — software. The Mac devices are powered by the macOS and the iPad is powered by the iPadOS which is a tweaked iOS.

In the iPadOS, the third-party applications are limited to using just 5GB of RAM even though the tablet comes powered by 8GB and 16GB RAM. This is to ensure that a single application doesn’t utilize all of the memory and impact other core system functions.

With the latest iPadOS 15, it appears that Apple has increased the cap on RAM usage for third-party applications. In iPad Pro powered by 16GB RAM, developers can request 12GB of RAM while 4GB RAM will be reserved for the core system functions.

Similarly, for the device powered by 8GB RAM, the company is reserving 2GB RAM to system functions and allowing developers to use 6GB RAM. The iPad models with less than 5GB RAM will have the same limits as before.

The change in the memory allocation in iPadOS will be beneficial to applications that are more graphically intensive, such as apps that support drawing, modeling, photo editing or video editing, among others.

Apple has said that new entitlement will be available on the “supported devices” but the tech giant hasn’t revealed the list of supported devices, so at this point in time, it’s not known which devices will support it, apart from the iPad Pro.

The latest iPadOS 15 comes with some new features and several additions and improvements to the existing ones. The software is set to be released this Monday, i.e. 20th September along with the iOS 15, tvOS 15, and watchOS 8.

Notably, JingOS is also being developed for smartphones as well, and will be available before the end of this year, while the tablet variant will be launch before the end of this month. At the moment, the operating system is supported on just the Huawei MateBook 14 and the Microsoft Surface 6. Unfortunately, it has yet to be tested on other devices but the company aims to bring support for other tablets including ARM based ones as well in the near future.

Apple has started a wave of update rollouts for its iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and watchOS software platforms. These updates bring a lot of new updates and fixes across the Cupertino-based company’s product ecosystem. For the iPhone, iOS 13.3 has been rolled out while the iPad receives iPadOS 13.3. Alongside this, even the watchOS for Apple Watch and tvOS for its Apple TV received an update as well.

The New iOS 13.3 & iPadOS 13.3

Apple has rolled out updates for two of its most popular platforms, namely the iPhone and iPad, in just under a month. Previously, the company had freshly introduced iOS 13.2.3 and iPadOS 13.2.3. The new update also brings many bug fixes and performance optimizations but also adds new features to the devices as well.

One of these is the new Parental control which provides additional communication limits to parents. This lets parents choose who their children can call, message or FaceTime. The new additions are an extension of the Screen Time feature which was introduced back in iOS 12 last year and lets parents directly manage contacts from their children’s devices. For those looking for this feature, it can be found through the Communication Limits section from the Screen Time settings.

Additionally, iOS 13.3 and iPadOS 13.3 brings support for NFC, USB, and Lightning FIDO2-compliant security keys. This can be used for securely browsing websites on Safari and other platforms like Dropbox, Facebook, Gmail, and Twitter. In other words, the update adds a physical security key to your iPhone and iPad which allows for better account privacy and protection across social media and emails.

The New tvOS 13.3 and watchOS 6.1.1

Alongside the iPhone and iPad update, Apple also rolled out software upgrades for its Apple TVs and its Apple Watches. tvOS 13.3 brings new settings that allow users to bring back the “Up Next” queue to your Apple TV home screen which was removed in tvOS 13. Now, users can switch between showing “What to Watch” and “Up Next” section.

Lastly, Apple launched watchOS 6.1.1 for every compatible Apple Watch models. The new update claims to provide “important security updates” but apart from this, it doesn’t bring any notable changes.

To download tvOS 13.3, users have to open Settings>System>Software Updates. For watchOS 6.1.1, users must look for My Watch Tab on the Watch app which is available in the iPhone and then visit General>Software Updates.
Note: Your Apple Watch should have at least 50 percent battery life remaining or charge it when updating.
