We keep hearing stories of Apple iPhones getting submerged in water and being recovered in working condition but this latest one is like no other. A student in Brazil lost their iPhone while rescuing a drowning woman in a lake. The phone slipped out of the student’s vest during the rescue and sank 7 meters deep into the lake. A week later, the phone was discovered and, surprisingly, it was still functioning.

This highlights the durability of iPhones, as they seem to be able to withstand even extreme circumstances like being submerged in water for an extended period of time. Technically, the iPhone 11 comes with an IP68 rating but it isn’t rated to survive deep or extended submergence.

The incident took place in Lake Paranoa, Brasilia, Brazil. According to a report from G1, Breno Rafael was on a kayak ride when he noticed a woman struggling in the lake. He jumped into the water to save her and after successfully getting the person to shore, Breno realized that he had lost his iPhone in the process.

A week after the incident, instructor Edinho Rocha discovered a cell phone at a depth of 7 meters. To everyone’s surprise, the phone was still working. Edinho recorded a video and posted it on social media to try to find the owner. The video received 17,000 views and, thanks to the shares, Breno Rafael was located as the owner of the device.

“I was on Lake Paranoá doing a kayak trip when I saw a girl drowning, asking for help. I immediately jumped out of the kayak to help her. I was wearing a vest and my cell phone. I jumped to help, and managed to take the girl to the shore of the lake “, Breno told G1.

Yesterday, Apple officially unveiled the iPhone 14 series at its ‘Far Out Event’. The latest iPhones were accompanied by AirPods Pro 2nd Gen, Apple Watch Series 8, and Apple Watch Ultra. Unsurprisingly, the American tech giant also announced the discontinuation of select older iPhones.

Further, the firm discontinues the iPhone 11 from 2019. It was the first base iPhone with a dual-camera setup, 4GB RAM, 18W wired charging support, and more.

Lastly, Apple also discontinues the iPhone 12 Mini from 2020. It was the first Mini iPhone, one of the first 5G iPhones, and the most affordable iPhone with an OLED display at the launch.

Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup is the latest offering by the Korean tech giant, and the smartphones pack lots of functionality and performance capacity. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the flagship device in the lineup and it’s a great device when measured across several parameters. However, some of the models in the S22 series have been indicated to be outperformed by older Apple iPhones that are powered by the A13 Bionic chip.

Even the Galaxy S22 Ultra seems to be lacking – at least through the performance benchmarks when it is paired against the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is powered by the A15 chip. It should be noted, however, that benchmarks do not indicate the full picture, but they can be quite illuminating for devices. The latest benchmarks regarding Exynos 2200 when compared with the A13 Bionic chip, indicate a better GPU and CPU performance for the iPhone 11 (released in 2019) than the Galaxy S22. Another issue that has been closely connected with the Exynos 2200 flagship chip is overheating of the device.

This seemingly under-par performance of the Galaxy S22 due to chip issues just adds to the growing issues relating to the device. Some industry watchers hold the view that the Galaxy S22 was rushed to the market, and may have in its trail, a litany of complaints and malfunction. It should be noted that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip is also used in some S22 models in place of the Exynos 2200, and the chip offers better performance than the Exynos 2200. In addition, some of the observed issues relating to the Galaxy S22 models could be fixed or alleviated by subsequent updates, so the model is still a good choice overall, although caution is the word.

Recent research suggests that iPhone 11 owners top the list of those trading in their device in order to buy the latest model from the iPhone 13 series. The analysis was performed by gathering and studying data on tens of thousands of iPhone trade-ins within the past couple of weeks.

The company behind the research called SellCell (via 9to5Mac) offers a pre-launch price lock-in that allows one to get a trade-in price that’s immune to the slashing of prices as a result of the release of a newer model. The old phone can then be sent to SellCell after customers get their new phone.

As we can see from the above chart, the iPhone 11 tops the table with 18% of the total amount of trade-ins done in the last two weeks (27th August to 10th September). The reason for this is that the iPhone 11 has now been available for two years. This means that 24-month cellphone contracts, which are quite common nowadays, are ending, thus causing the spike in iPhone 11 trade-ins.

The iPhone XR isn’t too far behind with a figure of 14%. With smartphones being upgraded every three to four years on an average presently, this doesn’t come as a surprise. After all, the XR was launched back in 2018.

What does come as a surprise though is that the iPhone 12 Pro Max is being traded in almost as much as the iPhone XR. It ranks number three in the table with a trade-in percentage of 14%. SellCell thinks this is because the iPhone 12 Pro Max has momentarily recovered some of its lost resale value. The implication of this is that iPhone 12 Pro Max owners are getting rid of their devices because of the unnaturally high resale value, which will be dipping once again post Apple iPhone 13 series launch.

New data made available by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners indicate that Apple‘s US sales numbers were driven by the four iPhone 12 series models, which accounted for 61% of the overall sales in the first quarter of 2021.  The four iPhone 12 models are the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the iPhone 12 Mini.

The iPhone 12 series performance data shows that the vanilla iPhone 12 model had the highest sales numbers among the four models. The petite iPhone 12 Mini accounted for the lowest number of units sold within the period. The iPhone 12 Mini has not met its pre-release projections and has not sufficiently caught the fancy of US consumers.  

The sales trajectory showed a shift away from the more expensive and newer iPhone 12 series to the less expensive iPhone 11. This resulted in a decline in the average selling price to $847 from its December 2020 average of $873. 

The iPhone 11 smartphone retained individual honor as the highest-selling Apple model, as was also the case in Q1 2020. The impressive and hugely popular Phone 11 grossed about 24% of the overall Apple smartphone sales, after a seeming lull in sales in the aftermath of the launch of the iPhone 12 series.

The iPhone 11 has had an outstanding performance against its more endowed successors, including the iPhone SE, iPhone 12 series, and the iPhone XR. It was a mixed bag for the iPhone SE and XR models in the three months ending in March 2021. While the iPhone SE declined from its Q4 2020 market share, the iPhone XR performed better.

Market research firm Omdia has published a report on most shipped smartphones in 2020. As per the report, only three brands made it to the top 10, just like 2019. These companies were none other than Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi.

According to the chart released by Omdia, the iPhone 11 was the most shipped smartphone in 2020 with 64.8 million units in shipments and $754 ASP (Average Selling Price). For those unaware, this handset’s predecessor (iPhone XR) topped the list in 2019 but the units were less at 46.3 million and the ASP was a bit more at $777.

Further, the second, third, seventh, and tenth positions were also occupied by Apple with the 2020 iPhone SE (24.2 million), iPhone 12 (23.3 million), iPhone 12 Pro Max (16.8 million), and iPhone 12 Mini (14.8 million). The ASP of these models were $451, $896, $1,232, and $796 respectively.

Interestingly, the iPhone 12 Mini shipped more than the iPhone 12 Pro although numerous reports stated poor sales. The latter phone is not even included in Omdia’a top 10 chart.

Further, with Apple sitting in five places, Samsung captured four positions. The South Korean tech giant’s Galaxy A51 ($269), Galaxy A21s ($192), Galaxy A01 ($115), and Galaxy A11 ($158) came fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth respectively. The shipments of these devices stood at 23.2 million, 19.4 million, 16.9 million, and 15.3 million units.

Lastly, the Redmi Note 9 Pro by Xiaomi was in ninth place with 15 million units in shipments and $161 ASP.

Apple is planning to boost the iPhone production in 2021 according to a Nikkei report. The move comes at a time when it already faces shortages of several components for the iPhone 12 series.

According to the report, Apple is planning to make 96 million iPhones in H1 2021. That’s a 30% YoY increase which is reportedly due to the demand for its 5G devices. Apple brought the 5G connectivity to iPhones with the iPhone 12 series. Since then, there has been a good demand for the devices in Europe, China, and other Asian markets. In fact, it’s initial demand forecasted a two-week recovery period due to shortages of supplies.

Anyway, the report says Apple has directed suppliers to get ready for the target which also includes iPhone 11, and iPhone SE. Further, Apple is also planning to take it deep with a total of 230 million iPhone shipments next year. Recently, Apple got pushed to 4th place by Xiaomi in Global Smartphone Shipments.

Precisely, the company has so far shipped 116 million iPhones in 2020. Out of this, the majority of shipment is from the 5G devices according to the report. Either way, it has crawled back up with just a 1% YoY dip in shipments so far. And with the global smartphone market’s recovery far away in 2022, Apple has no choice but to crank it up a notch and do something.

However, Apple has a main concern to address in order to achieve the next year’s target. Although the report says Apple has enough stocks of processor, it has been increasingly facing shortages of components. A recent report on IC shortages for iPhone 12 Pro which could last till Q2 2021 gives more bad news.

That’s not all as the report says in spite of reallocated parts of the iPad to the iPhone 12 range, Apple is chasing for other components to meet demand. Experts also say that even though a positive atmosphere lies ahead in 2021, Apple won’t benefit from Huawei’s absence, unlike other companies. Either way, Apple’s target for 2021 is a 20% YoY increase from 2019.

Going into 2021, it already has healthy demands for iPhone 12Pro, 12 Pro Max but not-so-great want for iPhone 12 and 12 mini. Nevertheless, the iPhone 12s will allow Apple to take a chunk of total OLED shipments but experts feel that the next iPhones won’t have any excitement now that 5G is already here.

At the beginning of the year, DxOMark reviewed the camera performance of the iPhone 11, giving it an overall score of 109 points. Fast forward to October when DxOMark announced it had made significant changes to its camera test protocol. The iPhone 11 has now had its review redone based on this updated test protocol and it has got a new overall score that is 10 points higher than the first one.

The overall score of 119 points is broken down into 129 points for photo, thus tying with the Pixel 5; 36 points for zoom; and 109 points for video.

The review says the iPhone 11 takes accurate photos with a wide dynamic range in most tested conditions. Color rendering is also one of its strengths as most of the images come out “vivid and pleasant”. However, the white balance is said to have a warm cast under low artificial lighting. Autofocus is another strong area where the iPhone 11 excels; DxOMark says it is “fast, accurate, and reliable”.

The phone falls short when it comes to zoom which is no surprise considering it doesn’t have a telephoto camera like the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Apple has launched a new display module replacement program for the iPhone 11. According to the company, a certain number of units’ displays have vulnerability where the displays might stop responding to touch.

Apple’s new support page for the iPhone 11 Display Module Replacement Program is live from yesterday(December 4). In that, it says(via Fonearena) that a small percentage of iPhone 11 manufactured from November 2019 to May 2020 might have display issues. Precisely, Apple says that displays might stop responding to the touch due to a faulty display module.

To mitigate this, the company is offering a free replacement of the display. This is another good gesture from the company. Previously, it offered a similar replacement for the affected AirPods Pro units. The last time Apple faced any troubles because of a faulty display was a class-action lawsuit regarding the “flexgate” backlight issue of MacBook Pro displays made between 2016-2017.

Coming back, do note that this new program is only for iPhone 11 and not any other iPhones. Anyway, if you are one of those unlucky users, You can follow the steps below to get your faulty display unit fixed:

As always, it’s a worldwide program but Apple says it might restrict your unit to the country of purchase. This means, if you are in the US and are planning to repair it elsewhere, chances are that you can’t. Plus, this program won’t extend the standard warranty of your iPhone 11 as well.

Nevertheless, the program’s validity is for two years from the date of the first retail sale(purchase) of the unit.

But I still prefer the iPhone 11 for a few reasons: first of all, it is the only waterproof phone of this trio. With its IP68 certification, it is dustproof and waterproof up to 2 meters deep. The iPhone 11 is built with 7000 series aluminum and it is sturdier than its rivals. Last but not least, it is a lot more compact thanks to its smaller display.

Display

The most stunning display of the trio belongs to the OnePlus 8T: it is the only one to feature an OLED panel, while iPhone 11 and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro have IPS displays. The OnePlus 8T also offers the HDR10+ certification, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro has an even higher 144 Hz refresh rate, but it has an IPS panel and that is the reason why it looks less impressive. The iPhone 11 has an IPS display as well, but it provides a very nice color reproduction and it is one of the best IPS panels out there. However, it lacks a high refresh rate just like all the other iPhones.

Hardware/Software

With all of these phones, you get amazing performances. The iPhone 11 sports an older Apple A13 Bionic chipset, but thanks to the optimization of iOS, it is incredibly fast and smooth. We can tell you the same about the OnePlus 8T and the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro, both powered by the Snapdragon 865 mobile platform. OnePlus 8T is actually superior because it provides up to 12 GB of RAM, while Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro stops at 8 GB. Further, the OnePlus 8T ships with Android 11 out of the box, while Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro is still based on Android 10.

Camera

The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro sports the best main sensor for the rear camera and it is able to provide a better photo quality with its 108 MP resolution and OIS. It also sports an ultrawide 13 MP lens and a 5 MP dedicated macro camera, as well as the support of 8K video recording. The iPhone 11 has just two cameras on the rear side, but it is still an amazing camera phone with its 12 MP sensors and a great algorithm. OnePlus 8T is a good camera phone as well with its 48 MP quad camera. However, none of these devices is among the very best camera phones out there.

Battery

The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro is actually able to offer the longest battery life thanks to its bigger 5000 mAh battery. The OnePlus 8T comes right after and it charges faster with its 65W fast charging technology. The iPhone 11 has a smaller battery but it supports wireless charging.

iPhone 11 carries a €719/$599 starting price, while OnePlus 8T and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro start from €599/$715. The OnePlus 8T is my favorite device of this comparison because of its AMOLED display, Android 11 out of the box, and faster charging. But some may prefer the iPhone 11 due to iOS, its amazing camera, compact body, and wireless charging. Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro lets you save more money because it is easy to find it for less than €500 thanks to online street prices.

It is an IPS panel, unfortunately, no OLED in this trio. The display of these two phones is actually superior to the screen found on the iPhone SE 2020. Last year, DXOMARK, primarily known for camera reviews, published benchmarks for its audio performance of smartphones. It includes many testing parameters like Timbre, Spatial,  maximum volume, and its artifacts. The company has now published the audio performance of the recently launched iPhone 12. And it almost matches the top-scoring device in their list.

The iPhone 12 has obtained an overall audio score of 73 in the DXOMARK Audio test. This is a very slight improvement if we look at the 72 score of the iPhone 11. However, it manages to sneak into the top 10 list of DXOMARK smartphone audio rankings. Accordingly, it sits currently in sixth place just above the yesteryear Apple flagship, iPhone 11 Pro Max.

However, it surprisingly fails to secure a rank above the iPhone Xs Max and misses out just by a score of one. Xiaomi’s Mi 10 Pro currently tops the list with a score of 76. Talking about the audio performance of the iPhone 12, DXOMARK says it offers an overall good performance albeit not bringing that big of a change from iPhone 11. The highlight of the speakers is reportedly seen in Gaming mode with a little help from the proper placement of speakers. Similarly, in recording tests, it shows good character with frequency response, punchy sounds with good attributes, and loudness. The recordings also have natural effects.

However, its drawbacks are few distortions while playing audio in the low spectrum. Plus, the device’s microphone placement is a bit obstructive at times. And recordings have modest distortion at times in loud volumes. The device also performs badly in Artifacts(sudden unwanted sound) and DXOMARK says it’s due to the heavy compression of the iPhone 12.

To sum up, if you look at the pros, it has excellent timbre, a wider sound stage, good loudness. But has Cons like high-volume distortion(Playback & recording), inverted channels in landscape mode, and obstructing microphone placements.

In late October, Canalys published a report on Global Smartphone Market Q3 2020. According to that, Xiaomi beat Apple to become the world’s third-largest smartphone brand for the first time. Now, more than a week later, the research firm has revealed the most-shipped devices in the same period.

As per Canalys, Samsung was the world’s largest smartphone brand in the third quarter of 2020 with a 23% market share by shipping 80.2 million units. Then, came Huawei at the second spot with a 14.9% share and 51.7 million shipments, followed by Xiaomi in the third place with 47.1 million shipments and 13.5% market share.

Lastly, the fourth and fifth positions were captured by Apple and vivo respectively. The American tech giant shipped 43.2 million units with a 12.4% market share, whereas the Chinese smartphone maker gained 9.1% share with 31.8 million units in shipments.

Talking about the most shipped smartphones, five of them were Samsung, three devices were by Xioami, and two from Apple.

The iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2020 acquired the first two positions. Whereas, the Samsung Galaxy A21s, Galaxy A11, Galaxy A51, Galaxy A31, and Galaxy A01 Core captured third, fourth, fifth, eighth, and tenth places respectively.

On the other hand, Xiaomi obtained sixth, seventh, and ninth positions with Redmi Note 9/Redmi 10X 4G, Redmi 9, and Redmi 9A respectively.

Huawei is having the worst nightmare of its life. It’s facing a heavy deterrent from the US for selling its 5G equipment elsewhere outside of China. The company, which recently got its semiconductor chips blocked, might just have its market share swallowed by Samsung. The latter is reportedly eyeing an early release of the new S series in 2021 to seize Huawei’s market share.

According to Reuters’ sources, Samsung will launch the next Galaxy S21 series Flagship a month earlier in 2021. With this, it might be planning to bank on the US ban on Huawei and grab its market share. And in turn, thwart Apple from gaining any more grounds. In fact, the report says that Samsung is preparing to launch the new Galaxy S21 early as late-January 2021.

This way it is likely to jump the launch by more than a month compared to 2020 when the Galaxy S20 series debuted in 2019. Plus, this corroborates with the earlier report that has speculated January 14 as the announcement date.

Besides, a source for Reuters says that Huawei’s stockpiles will run out by early next year. This is understandable considering the company has not launched a lot of devices outside of China in 2020. And it’s recent Huawei Mate 40 series is already facing shortage in some regions in its home country.

Similarly, the company recorded less than a 59% YoY shipment decline in the US compared to Apple. That is the latter reportedly sold 15% iPhone 11 there which is the world’s best selling smartphone in H1 2020. But it has risen back to fame in the US and Europe.

Thus, the company will be keenly looking to attack early rather than playing the defense this time considering 2021 will be a revival year. That said, industry officials from South Korea hope that the US President-elect Joe Biden will ease some restrictions. This could happen albeit the country looks to show a sturdy attitude against China.

This uncertainty, adds fuel to the fire as it already faces tough competition from Xiaomi and Oppo. All this could have made Samsung to take an early jump with Galaxy S21 series.

Apple launched the iPhone 12 series later than in previous years as a result of the global pandemic. The American tech giant is said to be facing supply chain issues for the new iPhones. Hence, the company is reported to have ordered more than 20 million units of older and cheaper iPhones.

According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Apple has asked its suppliers to prepare for more than 20 million iPhone XR, iPhone 11, and iPhone SE 2020 units from October till the end of the year. Because the company expects sales growth in the holiday season but it does not enough stock of the newer iPhone 12 series.

Another report by Bloomberg tells that Apple is facing a shortage of power management chips for the iPhone 12 series. This could be potentially the primary reason why the company is readying older models to fill the gap.

As per executive-level sources, the demand for iPhone 11 is still strong. Hence, Apple has ordered close to 10 million units each for iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2020 respectively. 

The figures for iPhone XR are unknown but since the company is reported to have ordered only more than 20 million total units, the orders for XR should be much lower than the other two phones.

Having said that, Apple has discontinued iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max with the launch of newer iPhones a few weeks back. Therefore, customers opting for the Pro models have no choice but to go with iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

It also suggests that a relatively reasonably priced premium handset from Apple can have the company rope in more customers.

But despite tensions between the US and China ramping up, the company recently confirmed that its latest smartphone use data from China’s BeiDou Satellite System.

The statement from Apple arrived just after Ran Chengqi, head of China’s Satellite Navigation Office (CSNO), said that the smartphone maker should introduce Beidou compatibility with the iPhone. In a statement to Global Times, the company confirmed “iPhone 11 models use Beidou as part of its location data system.” While Apple has confirmed this, its official Chinese website has yet to detail the same in its list of supported networks.

BeiDou support falls within GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) which also has Russia’s GLONASS. In a major boost to the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative, Apple has now started manufacturing iPhone 11 in India at the Foxconn plant which is located near Chennai in Tamil Nadu, reports The Economic Times.

Apple has already been manufacturing iPhones in India but there were not premium devices. That changed last year when Apple started assembling iPhone XR locally in India and now the current-generation iPhone 11 model has joined the list.

As per the report, Apple is ramping up production in phases and will soon start exporting the iPhone from India to other markets. This will likely lead to a price cut in the Indian market for the same model. Apple could reportedly save around 22 percent in import duties on locally assembled iPhone 11 in India.

The company started manufacturing smartphones in the Indian market with the first-generation iPhone SE, which is no longer on sale. It later started assembling iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, iPhone XR, and iPhone XS in India.

The report further adds that the company is also planning to start manufacturing the new iPhone SE 2020 as well as the iPhone 11 Pro smartphones in the Indian market at the Foxconn facility near Chennai.

The Apple iPhone 11 launched as the go-to iPhone late last year. This handset was the top-selling smartphone of the world in Q1 2020. But how’s its audio performance? According to DxOMark, it performs as good as its bigger sibling iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The iPhone 11 was recently reviewed by the DxoMak Audio team and it bagged an overall score of 71 points just like the Pro Max. Currently, it sits beneath the Oppo Find X2 Pro with 74 points.

As per DxOMark, the audio performance of iPhone 11 is similar to the iPhone 11 Pro Max with only one noticeable difference. The maximum volume level sounds lower due to slightly smaller speakers. But the phone scores better in timbre and artifacts compared to the higher model.

Further, the speakers on the handset have a good dynamic performance. But they lack proper stereo rotation when playing music in landscape orientation. Also, they lack bass extension opposed to other high-end smartphones.

As for recording, the iPhone11 does well in timbre, background, and dynamics. But it lacks timbre in live video, which in turn impairs timbre and envelope performances.

Lastly, although it records at great volume with fewer artifacts, the microphones do not have good directivity. Also, there’s no stereo support for memo and meeting recording.

The Apple iPhone 11 is the latest smartphone to be reviewed by DxOMark Selfie team. The handset scores an overall 91 points. Unfortunately, it still does not make it to the top 10. It currently ranks 13th in the list just above Huawei P30 Pro and below Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

According to the testers, the iPhone 11 performs decently with similar outputs like its bigger sibling iPhone 11 Pro series but there are some differences as well.

The selfies from the handset have very good target exposure on faces in almost all conditions. However, it does lack some dynamic range and highlight clippings are visible in images shot under high-contrast conditions.

The phone produces vivid colors with a slightly warm white balance. On the other, skin tones are yellowish on both iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. Whereas, the pictures from Galaxy S10 Plus have more natural-looking skin tone.

The cheapest iPhone from last year also has a problem with focus. Only the subjects close to the phone have good focus as the phone does not have an autofocus system. The images from the handset have a good amount of details in better lighting. Noise picks up indoors as well as in low-light scenarios.

Flash in the form of screen brightness does work as advertised but there are noise and vignetting effect with lower details. Artifacts in the images are well-controlled but there are visible corner softening, ringing, and anamorphosis.

The bokeh or portrait shots have strong blur even on the things that are in the same focus plane as the subject creating an artificial look. Also, there are visible blurs across the edges of the subject.

As for videos, the Apple iPhone 11 can shoot 4K 30fps clips with good details and lower noise than the iPhone 11 Pro. But the focus issue from pictures is present in videos too.

Also, colors are pleasant with accurate exposure and good white balance. The videos also have smooth transitions in changing lights with well-controlled artifacts. The stabilization is effective as well but it fixates more on the subject than the background.

As a whole, the iPhone 11’s selfie camera performs reasonably well with the focus being its nemesis.

The iPhone SE 2020 has a display diagonal of just 4.7 inches, so it is not the most suitable device for advanced users and productivity. On the other hand, it is easier for one-handed use and it fits better in a pocket. If we talk about the quality of the display, besides having a wider 6.1-inch diagonal, iPhone 11 provides a more convincing image quality. It even comes with a more reactive touch thanks to a 120 Hz touch-sampling rate. But keep in mind that the differences between the image quality of these displays are not huge.

Specs & Software

Despite it is a way more affordable device than all the other last-generation iPhones, the iPhone SE 2020 has exactly the same chipset as the iPhone 11 lineup. This means that it is able to provide similar performances. The operating system is the same on both the devices (iOS 13 out of the box), and even the internal storage is the same: they both come in configurations with 64, 128 or 256 GB. There is only a single difference in the hardware department: iPhone 11 offers an additional gig of RAM. While iPhone SE 2020 has 3 GB of RAM, the iPhone 11 sports 4 GB of RAM for better multi tasking performances. But one single gig of RAM on iOS 13 is not a very noticeable difference in terms of overall performance.

Camera

On the rear side, the iPhone SE 2020 has just a single camera with a 12 MP resolution, but it is a great camera and it supports OIS. It is even able to calculate depth info by taking advantage of machine learning, without the need for a secondary depth sensor. The iPhone 11 adds a useful 12 MP ultrawide lens on the rear side, for a total of two cameras. And unlike the SE 2020 sporting a dual-LED flash, the 11 has a quad-LED flash. Besides a better rear camera department, the iPhone 11 also comes with a better front camera: a 12 MP sensor accompanied by an SL 3D sensor that enables Face ID.

Battery

iPhone 11 has a much bigger battery than iPhone SE 2020 (3110 mAh vs 1821 mAh) and it is able to provide a way longer battery life. The battery life of the iPhone 11 is very satisfying, it is not a battery phone but it can last more than one working day with most of the usage patterns. iPhone SE 2020 debuted yesterday, so we had no chance to test its battery life.

Price

iPhone 11 is priced $699 (€799 in Europe) in its base variant, while iPhone SE 2020 starts from just $399 (€499 in Europe). The iPhone 11 is a way better smartphone, but if you do not need above-average battery life, the most modern design, a wide display, and an ultrawide camera, there are no noticeable differences that justify the price difference between the two handsets. iPhone SE 2020 is a great alternative for the price, even though you can get better specifications with several Android phones in the same price range. But you would never get iOS nor that compact body.

However, a new report suggests that the company has failed its iPhone 11 production in India, showcasing its continued reliance on China.

Reportedly, Apple executives had apparently planned on moving at least one product to Vietnam as well, but that move was denied by senior management. The reason was tied with the transfer to a new location and finding a viable supply being deemed “too challenging to undertake.” Similarly, the Cupertino based giant had planned on manufacturing iPhone 11 in India as well. This would’ve been a significant change in Apple’s operations as it would be the first new generation flagship series being made outside of China.

However, Apple backed out of the plan and halted all ongoing efforts just before setting up a manufacturing line in India. The company still has no immediate plans to shift its operations to other regions.

This extends outside of China as well, including regions like South Korea, where Apple gets its camera modules. Glal insights and data management firm Kantar recently published its smartphone overall sale data for Q4 2019. The survey shows iOS accounts for 24.3% of smartphone sales in five major European nations including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the UK, alongside the USA, Urban China, Australia, and Japan.

According to Dominic Sunnebo, Kantar’s Global Director, “Apple iPhone 11 accounts for 10% of all iOS smartphones sold across the US and Europe combined in the last quarter of CY20. This is a phenomenal achievement for Apple since it accounts for twice the number of iPhone XRs sold during the same period. The iPhone 11 series accounts for 50% of all iPhones sold throughout Europe and America, which is a major rise from 36% recorded by the iPhone X lineup in the previous quarter”.

Samsung, on the other hand, was not so lucky. While the Galaxy A-Series managed to hold its own in the US market, the flagship Galaxy S lineup failed to leave an impression. Initially, DxOMark was a benchmarking platform that tested digital and professional grade cameras, but since the original Google Pixel, have also started testing smartphones as well. In the tests, Apple iPhone 11 scored 109 points overall for its camera which includes both photography and videography. This put the Cupertino based giant’s smartphone right below Xiaomi Mi 9 with 110 points and next to Huawei P20 Pro that scored 109 points as well.

Notably, iPhone 11 beat the previous generation flagship, iPhone XS Max, which scored 106 points. However, the former is beaten by its more expensive variants, the iPhone 11 Pro Max with an overall score of 117. The reason for the noticeable difference has bee n accredited to the lack of a third lens in the iPhone 11, unlike its larger more pricier variant. It scored 112 points in still images with its strength lying in its quick autofocus and great exposure in images.

Bloomberg, a reporting agency, published the news and stated that the iPhone 11 series is “outperforming the market and Apple’s expectations.” In other words, the Cupertino based tech giant has to raise production capacity for its smartphone to keep up with high demands. TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is a major manufacturer of PC and mobile processors. It is also a known brand that supplies Apple’s A13 chipsets used in its iPhone 11 lineup.

Furthermore, another major reason for Apple bumping up the production of its proprietary chipset also ties in with an upcoming affordable iPhone model. It is reported that the device will feature a design similar to that of the iPhone 8 but with the newer and faster A13 processor. With the Power 3, UMIDIGI is offering a 6,150mAh battery, which is the biggest yet for the company. In addition, the Power 3 also features a quad-camera setup with a 48MP main sensor, a hole-punch display on the front, and Helio P60 SoC. The phone will start global sale on November 11th on Aliexpress.

Biggest Battery Yet

The Power Series is known for the big battery found inside the phones and Power 3 is no different. It packs the biggest battery to date with a 6150mAh battery and USB Type-C 18W fast charger.

What’s more, it features 10W fast OTG reverse charging that can charge other devices while other phones only support about 2.5W OTG reverse charging. You don’t even have to buy an OTG cable as is comes as a gift.

Multi-function Quad Cameras

Another new feature in Power 3 is the quad rear camera setup that consists of a 48MP main camera, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5MP macro camera, and a 5MP depth-sensing camera. The first generation of the Apple iPhone SE introduced back in 2016 was designed on the frame of the iPhone 5s using the specifications of the iPhone 6s. The handset is no longer available for purchase as it has been discontinued. Rumors are rife that the successor phone dubbed as the iPhone SE 2 will debut in March 2020. Ming-Chi Kuo from TF Securities analyst has claimed that the smartphone will be priced at $399. 

Kuo had earlier announced Apple’s intentions of revealing a mid-cycle handset in March. The device promised to follow in the footsteps of the iPhone SE, delivering better hardware at a lower price. Kuo believes the SE 2 will arrest Apple’s faltering sales in 2020. He estimates suppliers selling anywhere between 2 and 4 million devices every month with a total of 30 million devices sold at the end of 2020.

Apple iPhone SE 2 Specifications (Rumored)

The 64GB variant of the iPhone 8 currently sells for $449. Even though the SE 2 is based on the same platform, it replaces 3D Touch Screen with Haptic Touch while utilizing numerous older components. Apple should be able to hack $50 off the price tag, effectively selling the SE 2 for $399. The real goal behind the iPhone SE seriesis to introduce buyers to the Apple Ecosystem. With Tim Cook increasing the prices of premium devices each year, it is crucial for Apple to attract new customers with an affordable device.
