If you have been an avid fan of the Chinese smartphone market, you’ll agree that a couple of years back Apple was struggling to sell its iPhones in China. The turnaround started with the iPhone X which marked a massive change in the design style of the iPhone. Since then, it has been a rapid resurgence for the US company, even in China. Yes, Apple has been recording rapid growth in China. The latest iPhone 13 series has even helped bolster the brand’s performance since it was released.

The latest market research report by CINNO Research shows that the iPhone 13 is the best-selling individual smartphone in China in the month of January 2022. The company reportedly recorded a total sales of 2.3 million units during the period under review. According to records, this is the fourth consecutive month Apple’s latest iPhone 13 series is topping the individual sales chart in China. The feat started in October 2021, a month after the smartphone was first released.

Apple isn’t the top-selling brand in China in January 2022, though. That crown is coveted by OPPO which sold an estimated 5.4 million smartphones excluding models sold via the Realme brand. Vivo came in second with an estimated 5.2 million units in sales. Honor also came in third with roughly 5.2 million units in sales in January.Apple occupied the fourth spot with 5.1 million units sold during the period. Xiaomi completed the top 5 spots with an estimated 4.4 million units sold in January.

Apple continues to wear the top smartphone brand crown in terms of sales units and revenue in China. This marks the brand’s 6th consecutive week at the top position.

In a recently published Counterpoint Research report, the global industry analysis firm stated that Apple’s rise to first place began right after the iPhone 13 was released in China. Since then Apple has been in the leading position for the majority period, rarely getting dethroned by Vivo. However, for the past six weeks, the Cupertino-based giant has been leading by a considerable margin.

The new iPhone 13 has been credited for this success which was released at a relatively lower starting price in China and brought with it the new camera and 5G features. Counterpoint is also linking the Apple iPhone surge to the problems of former powerhouse Huawei, which faced declining sales due to the ongoing US sanctions.

Among the iPhone 13 models offered in China, the base iPhone 13 models recorded the highest sales proportions at 51%, followed by iPhone 13 Pro Max at 23%. The iPhone 13 Pro made for 21% of Apple’s smartphone sales volume while iPhone 13 Mini made for 5% of the total sales during 2021.

Ever since the iPhone 13 release, Apple has maintained the top spot in terms of sales volume in China apart from the brief period during Singles Day when it was overtaken by Vivo.

Research Director Tom Kang has stated that “Apple’s only true competitor in China till now was Huawei and it is now facing serious production issues due to the US sanctions. Apple is likely to continue its high performance in China until other competitors catch up in both brand and quality.”

Apple iPhones continued their resurgence in China as the most sought-after smartphone in the country, as indicated by the latest Counterpoint Research numbers. The iPhone accounted for 23.6% of smartphone sales in China in November, up from its 22% showing back in October 2021. The numbers also indicate that the iPhone has sustained the leadership of the market for two consecutive months in China. Chinese brand Vivo followed Apple in the pecking order with a 17.8% share of the market.

The impressive numbers could be due to several reasons, one of the most telling being the release of the iPhone 13 series with a massive reception in China. The iPhone 13 series offer improved cameras and photography functionality, longer battery life, and several other innovations at a price at par with the iPhone 12. Other iPhone models have also had a great run in the highly competitive Chinese market that has a lot of local high-premium brands and flagships.

The surge in numbers in November is not unconnected with China’s Singles Day during the month which saw massive sales. Counterpoint Research is predicting the Apple iPhone bubble is expected to decline from December or January 2022 as the bulk of older iPhone users may have concluded the upgrade of their devices. Counterpoint is also linking the Apple iPhone surge to the decline and problems of former powerhouse Huawei, which has seen the company’s revenue projections reviewed substantially lower than expected. Some of the other Chinese leading brands like Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo are also suffering from the harsh sanctions regime from the United States.

The overall Q4 performance so far however sees Vivo as having the leading 23% share of shipments, with Apple coming fifth with 13%. Although the full numbers for the fourth quarter are yet to be released, some declines in Apple’s overall position.

Investment bank Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives believes that iPhone 13 orders are already about 20% ahead of Apple‘s earlier iPhone 12 lineup due to high volumes of pre-orders in China. He says that iPhone 13 demand looks “robust out of the gates,” as China approaches the 5 million or 6 million pre-orders mark. Despite supply chain issues, Apple could witness better results than iPhone 12 launch last year.

The analyst, in conversation with AppleInsider, also highlights that a major chunk of iPhone orders is skewing toward the premium models like the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, which will help Apple end up averaging higher ASP (average selling price). As a result of this, Apple may continue to maintain its lead with an even bigger margin this time. Ives also believes that luring financing options and aggressive trade-ins could also play a role in swaying iPhone owners who may be considering an upgrade.

Wedbush supply checks hint that iPhone 13 orders appear to be in the 90 million unit range which is higher than the 80 million units that we witnessed for iPhone 12. Apple may further set iPhone unit builds somewhere between 130-150 million if things continue to unfold the way it has so far. The iPhone 13 lineup is on an exponential trajectory and has already registered a 10% build increase YoY right away.

The analyst has a strong belief in his “super-cycle” thesis and that it will do well in 2022. According to this, an estimated 250 million out of 975 million iPhone devices are in line for an upgrade. Ives hasn’t altered his outperform rating for Apple and his 12-month price target of $185 which has been formulated based on a sum-of-the-part valuation on his Apple 2022 estimates.
