<p>A new report has revealed that the latest <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-iphone-14-series/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple iPhone 14 series</a> of smartphones are seemingly easier to repair than their predecessor. However, it&#8217;s not all good news since there is a catch. Here&#8217;s what we know.</p>

<p>The Cupertino based giant has claimed that the new iPhone 14 lineup will be easier to fix than the previous iterations. However, this easier fix is apparently not available to third party repair stores. The news arrives from sources within the third party repair community who told <em><a href="https://www.engadget.com/apple-iphone-14-always-on-display-brightness-screen-replacement-issue-130035505.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Engadget </a></em>that breaking down an iPhone 14 sure is easy, although, putting it back together and having it work as intended is another issue entirely. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="538" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-14_overview__ewkgx3s30v8m_og-1024x538.png?x10805" alt="Apple" class="wp-image-493320" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-14_overview__ewkgx3s30v8m_og-1024x538.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-14_overview__ewkgx3s30v8m_og-300x158.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-14_overview__ewkgx3s30v8m_og-768x403.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-14_overview__ewkgx3s30v8m_og-696x365.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-14_overview__ewkgx3s30v8m_og-1068x561.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-14_overview__ewkgx3s30v8m_og-800x420.png 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/iphone-14_overview__ewkgx3s30v8m_og.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>As per the report, the iPhone 14 has two ambient light sensors that help control the brightnes of the display. However, using an unauthorized display for the replacement has these two ambient light sensor stop working entirely. What this means is, your iPhone&#8217;s display will be completely black, unless you somehow remember the exact position of the screen brightness slider and manage to manually adjust the brightness. But now, you&#8217;ll have to manually adjut it every time. The issue stems from Apple&#8217;s &#8220;part pairing&#8221; restriction, which basically adds a unique digital ID to individual components that the iPhone 14 recognizes. So using unauthorized parts causes some components to stop working.</p>

<p>To verify new parts, one would need Apple&#8217;s in house software and an Apple authorized technician. In the past, third party repairer could use a special device called the EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read-only memory) programmer, which lets you rewrite the information stored on an EEPROM microchip. This let technicians read the ID from the original display and put it only in the replacement panel. However, this process seems to be impossible on the new iPhone 14 series.</p>

However, soon after its release, various reports surfaced regarding bugs that users were facing on the new device. Now, a new report has found that users are now facing another issue, which is affecting the SIM this time around.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="538" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Apple-iPhone-14-feat-1024x538.webp?x10805" alt="Apple" class="wp-image-491160" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Apple-iPhone-14-feat-1024x538.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Apple-iPhone-14-feat-300x158.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Apple-iPhone-14-feat-768x403.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Apple-iPhone-14-feat-696x365.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Apple-iPhone-14-feat-1068x561.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Apple-iPhone-14-feat-800x420.webp 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Apple-iPhone-14-feat.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>People who bought the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max have raised complaints regarding their devices showing the message &#8220;SIM Not Supported.&#8221; Following this, the screen also freezes for a short while as well. While some of the bugs we had initially reported on were circulated on publications or on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/09/28/apple-iphone-14-pro-restart-charging-networking-bug/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reddit</a>, this issue has been officially acknowledged by the Cupertino based giant. </p>

<p>According to Apple, this SIM issue is caused by a bug in iOS 16. In other words, it is clearly not a hardware related problem and the brand is also actively working on finding a fix to this matter. Meaning, users of the iPhone 14 series can expect to see a software update roll out soon that will patch this bug. Apple has also urged its iPhone 14 users to keep their devices&#8217; software up to date.</p>

<p>As of right now, there are a few things that can be done while the company is working on a fix. This includes waiting for a couple of minutes, by which time the message usually disappears on its own. It is advised that users do not restore their devices, rather, visit an Apple Store or an authorized service provider who is trained to offer professional technical support in resolving this problem.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-456346 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/iPhone-13-Pro-colors.png?x10805" alt="" width="799" height="448" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/iPhone-13-Pro-colors.png 799w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/iPhone-13-Pro-colors-300x168.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/iPhone-13-Pro-colors-768x431.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/iPhone-13-Pro-colors-696x390.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/iPhone-13-Pro-colors-749x420.png 749w" sizes="(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /></p>
<p>According to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-17/apple-targets-sept-7-for-iphone-14-launch-in-flurry-of-devices" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gurman</a>, the information comes from &#8220;people with knowledge of the matter.&#8221; The company will be launching a bunch of new products at this launch event including its highly anticipated iPhone 14 lineup and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Apple-Watch-series-8/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Apple Watch Series 8</a>. There are apparently plans for a new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/08/16/apple-ipad-launch-event-october-rumors/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">low-cost iPad</a>, upgraded iPad Pro versions, a Mac Pro with Apple silicon processors, and other gadgets, though these may be reserved for a second October event.</p>
<p>Coming back to the star of the show, Apple plans to release a total of four ‌iPhone 14‌ models, including a 6.1-inch ‌<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iPhone-14/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">iPhone 14‌</a>, a 6.7-inch ‌<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iPhone-14-max/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">iPhone 14‌ Max</a>, a 6.1-inch <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iPhone-14-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">‌iPhone 14 Pro‌</a>, and a 6.7-inch ‌<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iPhone-14-pro-max/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max</a>. The Cupertino giant will skip on the mini model for the iPhone 14 as these small models have not sold well in the past.</p>

<p>The iPhone 14 Pro models will have new camera technology with upgraded sensors, the removal of the notch in favor of a pill-shaped and hole-punched cutout, an A16 chip, and more. The vanilla iPhone 14 model is expected to receive minor modifications. It would also be interesting to see how the customers will receive the new iPhone 14 Max model as it will essentially be similar to the vanilla iPhone 14, but it will feature a 6.7-inch display instead of a 6. inch display.</p>
<p>Three new Apple Watch models are in development: the Series 8 model, the upgraded SE model, and the all-new Pro model, which is anticipated to have a larger body, an updated look, and a more robust design.</p>

Leading brands like MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Samsung have already adopted this process to manufacture their latest chips. It was expected that Apple would also join the party and switch to the new 4nm process for its upcoming A16 chip, however, to our disappointment, the company will likely continue to use TSMC’s 5nm process.</p>
<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc">TSMC’s</a> Roadmap, as brought to light by reputable Analyst <a href="https://twitter.com/mingchikuo/status/1530849357154914304">Ming-Chi Kuo</a>, reveals that the A16 SoC for this year’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone">iPhones</a> will only use the 5nm process. This news coincides with a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/05/27/apple-a16-bionic-chip-tscm-5nm-process/">recent claim</a> made by the leaker ShrimpApplePro who said that instead of the 4nm process, the new A16 chip will benefit from an upgraded CPU and GPU and faster LPDDR5 RAM</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-462565" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-scaled.jpg?x10805" alt="iPhone 14 Pro" width="2560" height="1440" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-696x391.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-1920x1080.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/iPhone-14-Pro-Gold-Side-to-Side-Alpha-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></p>
<p>Both Shrimp and Kuo indicate that the 4nm process isn&#8217;t significantly better than the 5nm approach, and any improvements would be marginal. However, this claim appears to be contradictory because <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a>&#8216;s most recent flagship chip, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon-8-plus-gen-1">Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1</a>, is said to have benefited from TSMC&#8217;s 4nm technology.</p>
<p>Using the same fabrication level often limits the generation&#8217;s potential performance and power efficiency advancements. However, the A15 chip still provided 10% performance and efficiency improvements over the A14 processor despite using the same 5nm technology. So, it is likely that the upcoming A16 chip will provide more power and efficiency than its predecessor.</p>
<p>It is worth mentioning that the A16 chip will only be present in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-14-pro-">iPhone 14 Pro</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-14-pro-max/">Pro max</a> versions, and the rest two models will carry the same chip as the previous year’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-13">iPhone 13</a> models.</p>
<p>It was recently reported that Apple is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/05/27/apples-iphone-14-max-production-hampered-due-to-the-lockdown-in-china-report/">running behind schedule</a> with its upcoming iPhone 14 series. One of the models (Likely the iPhone 14 Max) is said to be facing a 3 weeks delay. It is still expected that the company will unveil its latest smartphones in September.</p>

Following the report, leakster Jon Prosser dropped <a href="https://youtu.be/42Ot6Y0gBzs">renders</a> of what he believes the iPhone 14 would look like.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_417773" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-417773" style="width: 696px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-417773" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-1024x504.jpg?x10805" alt="iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser" width="696" height="343" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-1024x504.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-300x148.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-768x378.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-324x160.jpg 324w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-696x343.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-1068x526.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser-853x420.jpg 853w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-renders-Jon-Prosser.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-417773" class="wp-caption-text">Image: FRONT PAGE TECH</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Further, a now-deleted post from @PandaIsBald on Weibo stated that it will be difficult for Apple to adopt the hole punch for all of the models and abandon the notch completely. Instead, the iPhone 14 will be extending the usage of the notch by yet another year, only with yet another reduction in size.</p>
<p>What remains to be seen is how Apple will be implementing Face ID if it ditches the notch considering the elaborate hardware that is required for the same to work.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-417774" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-1024x576.png?x10805" alt="iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech" width="696" height="392" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/iPhone-14-rear-front-page-tech.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>Apple did reduce the width of the notch with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro but increased its height. This was achieved by reducing the TrueDepth camera system&#8217;s component sizes and reengineering the internals. The earpiece was also moved to the top bezel from its prior position within the notch, thus freeing up a whole lot of width.</p>
<p>Last but not the least, the said post claims that Touch ID will not be going under-display next year, meaning Face ID may continue to be the sole way to unlock iPhone 14 devices.</p>
