Samsung, however, managed to secure its own victory. The Galaxy A16 5G was the highest-selling Android device of the quarter, ranking fourth overall. Its appeal comes from a mix of practical features and a competitive price tag. The phone ships with Samsung’s Exynos 1330 or Mediatek Dimensity 6300 processor (depending on the region), and up to six years of Android updates, making it a long-term choice for budget buyers.

The Galaxy A06 4G also performed well, landing in fifth place. On Apple’s side, the newly launched iPhone 16e slotted in at number six. It cuts back on premium extras like the ultra-wide camera and MagSafe but still runs the A18 chip, which seems to have helped adoption in cost-sensitive markets.

Higher-end Android devices were less visible. The Galaxy S25 Ultra was the only flagship to break into the top ten, while Xiaomi’s Redmi 14C 4G claimed a spot thanks to strong sales in Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. It was also the only brand outside of Apple and Samsung to appear in the rankings.

Google packs the Pixel 10 with the largest battery out of the three, bringing a 4970mAh cell that supports 29W wired fast charging and 15W Qi2 Pixelsnap magnetic wireless charging. This makes it the first true competitor to the iPhone 16’s MagSafe. While the battery details have never been revealed by Apple, it does support 25W wired fast charging. Lastly, the Galaxy S25 has a similar 25W wired fast charging, 15W wireless charging support, and a 4,000mAh battery. So the Pixel 10 takes the win once again.

Software & Ecosystem

The Pixel 10 offers the cleanest Android experience, with 7 years of Android and security updates and deep AI integration. This matches Samsung’s seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. Samsung followed closely, claiming a 23% share of the total market value thanks to solid demand for its Galaxy A and S25 series.

While Apple led the premium space, Vivo dominated unit shipments overall, thanks to popular models in the budget-friendly ₹10,000–₹15,000 segment. Oppo secured third place with strong sales from its A and K series.

Other brands saw impressive gains. OnePlus posted 75% year-on-year growth in the ultra-premium category, driven by the OnePlus 13 and 13R, while the more compact OnePlus 13s (review) is reportedly gaining traction. Realme’s GT 7 lineup also found favor, particularly the Aston Martin F1-inspired Dream Edition.

Motorola enjoyed an 86% boost in shipments, thanks to its expanding retail presence and demand for its G and Edge series. Lava made a strong comeback in the sub-₹10,000 category, with a 156% surge supported by clean software and better after-sales service.

Microsoft has expanded its Phone Link feature to include iPhone users, bringing seamless integration to the Windows 11 Start menu. Previously limited to Android devices, this update allows iPhone owners to connect their devices to Windows PCs and access key features directly from the Start menu. Users can now view messages, check battery status, monitor connectivity, and track recent activities without opening the Phone Link app.

Simplified file sharing and connectivity for iPhone users

The update also simplifies file sharing between iPhones and PCs. By accessing the connected device in the Start menu, users can quickly send files with just a few clicks, similar to Apple’s AirDrop functionality. This enhancement builds on Microsoft’s earlier rollout of iPhone file sharing, making the process faster and more intuitive.

To use these features, Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta Channels need Windows 11 Build 4805 or higher, Phone Link version 1.24121.30.0 or later, and a Microsoft account. Bluetooth LE support is also required. While the feature is currently available to testers, it is expected to roll out to all Windows 11 users in the coming months.

Apple‘s grip on the Chinese market, once a major growth engine for the iPhone giant, seems to be loosening. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a prominent industry analyst, the iPhone has seen a significant decline in sales in the mainland, and Kuo’s insights suggest the trend might not reverse anytime soon.

Kuo’s report reveals that iPhone shipments in China fell by 10-12% year-over-year in December 2024, even as the overall smartphone market in the country remained stable. 

The decline is likely due to the perceived lack of innovation in Apple’s latest models. The iPhone 16 series introduced only minor changes, such as a slightly modified camera lens bump that left consumers in China and beyond unimpressed. 

“In December 2024, overall smartphone shipments in China were about flat, iPhone shipments dropped by about 10-12% YoY, reflecting a continued slide in Apple’s Chinese market share.” – says Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple’s planning for 2025

As a result, Kuo says that Apple has taken a cautious approach toward 2025 production planning for iPhones. Projections for the first half of 2025 (1H25) indicate a year-on-year (YoY) shipment decline of about 6%. 

This follows a relatively flat shipment performance in the first quarter of 2025 (1Q25), which Kuo attributes to preemptive stocking in January ahead of anticipated tariffs under the Trump administration. The second quarter (2Q25), however, is expected to see a noticeable dip.

Looking ahead, Apple’s rumored ultra-thin iPhone 17 and foldable iPhone models, slated for the second half of 2025, could face additional hurdles. Both devices are expected to feature eSIM-only designs, a challenge in China, where carrier support for eSIM remains limited. Kuo notes that unless Apple adjusts the designs to accommodate physical SIM cards, these models may struggle to gain traction.

Even the launch of the iPhone SE4 in mid-2025 might not turn the tide. Kuo suggests it’s unlikely to offset broader shipment declines due to its limited impact on the overall lineup.

For 2024, Kuo estimates iPhone shipments will total approximately 220 million units, with a slight increase to 220–225 million in 2025—both figures falling short of market expectations of over 240 million units annually.

Apple has made impressive improvements in the overall design of the iPhone 16. The base model is a compact flagship with a slim 7.8mm body that weighs just 170 grams. Performance

So there is a noticeable upgrade in performance and battery efficiency in the Android rival.

This is another department where Oppo has a better overall package. Comparing the quality of images from the main cameras would need a dedicated article of its own, but the Oppo Find X8 Pro has a more versatile setup. It features four 50MP sensors for the main, ultra wide angle, and two periscope telephoto shooters. Apple only offers a 48MP main and 12MP ultra wide angle lens.

In other words, you can’t take lossless zoomed shots on the iPhone 16, while the Find X8 Pro offers 3x and 6x optical zoom. It even supports 120x digital zoom and a bunch of AI powered features like AI Eraser, AI Super resolution, AI De-Blur and more.

Pricing & Verdict

One of the biggest advantages of the Oppo Find X8 Pro was that it launched for just 5,299 Yuan in the Chinese market. This amounts to around 744 US Dollars, making it over 50 Dollars cheaper than the Apple iPhone 16, which costs 799 US Dollars. But Apple’s flagship is more accessible across the globe and Oppo is only just rolling out the Find X8 series outside of China.

To make matters worse, the Find X8 Pro comes with a steep price hike in India. It is listed for 99,999 INR, which is about 1,184 US Dollars. This is a massive difference in price since it now loses its biggest advantage as well. Apple launched the iPhone 16 in India for 79,999 INR, which is 947 US Dollars.

So it might seem like the better deal to many now as Chinese flagships while surpassing Apple’s, aren’t as accessible as they used to be. So depending on your use, budget, and preference, the iPhone 16 might be the better option. The company had apparently failed to keep its promise for planned investment in the region, prompting the end of iPhone 16 sales in the region. But now, Apple is willing to invest even more in Indonesia to reverse this decision. So let’s check it out.

Apple iPhone 16 Sales Ban: What was it all about?

The Cupertino based giant faced the sales restriction after failing to meet the $109 million investment that it had promised to provide in local infrastructure. Reports had indicated that Apple fell short of this amount by around $14 million. This paired with no new agreements and previous issues with the government’s mandate to source 40% local components led to the iPhone 16 sales ban.

So what now?

As of right now, Apple has already began work on an innovation development scheme by creating Apple Academies in the country. Furthermore, a new report claims (Via PhoneArena) that Apple has increased its offer to invest $100 million in Indonesia over the next two years. This is a sizeable investment, which is around 10 times higher than its previous proposal of $10 million for a factory in Bandung that would make accessories and components.

The Indonesian government has yet to respond to Apple’s new proposal officially. However, considering how the Ministry of Industry is looking for Apple to expand research and development for iPhones selling in the country, this new investment promise might end the ban of iPhone 16 sales. To recall, Indonesia had also blocked the sale of Google’s Pixel 9 series of smartphones as well for a similar reason. This is a high end display, although, it’s a lot more easier to wield. But despite its compact form factor, the device packs cutting edge technology. The model is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, which is paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage.

Apple’s iPhone 16 series, launched in early September, has already hit a significant roadblock in Indonesia. The Indonesian government recently announced a ban on the sale and even the operation of iPhone 16 models within the country.

This restriction also applies to other new Apple products, like the Watch Series 10. The decision stems from Apple’s failure to meet its agreed-upon investment commitment, a requirement for obtaining certification for device sales in Indonesia.

According to Indonesia’s Minister of Industry, Apple had pledged to invest $109 million in local infrastructure, aiming to increase its presence in the region. However, reports indicate that Apple has invested only about $95 million so far, leaving a shortfall of $14 million.

iPhone 16 is yet to receive necessary certification to be sold in the country

This has prevented the Indonesian Ministry of Industry from granting the required IMEI certification, effectively blocking Apple’s products from being legally sold in the country. For those unfamiliar, this certification is vital as it enables phones to operate with the local network; without it, the iPhone 16 models are not legally recognized and cannot access cellular networks.

In his statement, Minister Gumiwang Kartasasmita made it clear that any iPhone 16 found in operation within Indonesia is considered “illegal.” He urged citizens to report any active units and advised against purchasing iPhone 16 models from international sources, which would still fall under the ban.

Apple’s shortfall in investment has deeper implications due to Indonesia’s regulations for foreign companies. The government mandates a 40% “local component” requirement, which companies typically meet through investments in manufacturing, research, and local development.

Apple had initially proposed establishing research and development facilities to satisfy this criterion. While Apple CEO Tim Cook visited Jakarta earlier this year to discuss potential expansion plans, no new agreements have been reached, and the pending issues remain unresolved.

Apple‘s latest flagship, the iPhone 16, gets a mediocre score in DxOMark’s display analysis. The independent benchmark site, which scientifically assesses smartphones, lenses, and cameras, gives the iPhone 16 just 142 points—falling short for a premium smartphone.

This score puts the iPhone 16 behind several more affordable competitors, including the Samsung Galaxy A35 5G and Google Pixel 8a, which both managed 143 and 145 points respectively. DxOMark’s current display leader, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, sits comfortably at the top with 158 points.

One area where the iPhone 16 struggles is brightness. Apple says the phone boasts a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits, and DxOMark’s measurements also revealed a figure close to it at peak of 1,969 nits. 

However, it falls behind the Samsung Galaxy S24, which achieved a staggering 2,548 nits. Despite this discrepancy, DxOMark acknowledges that the iPhone 16’s brightness is adequate for most outdoor viewing scenarios.

iPhone 16 Display Fails to Impress in DxOMark Analysis

DxOMark also identified other shortcomings beyond raw brightness. In low-light conditions, the analysis found that Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) content appeared too dark and lacked sufficient contrast. Additionally, HDR10 content exhibited brightness fluctuations, potentially impacting viewing quality.  

Touchscreen responsiveness proved reliable in most situations, but DxOMark noted a minor issue with the new capture button. More concerning is the display’s refresh rate. Stuck at 60 Hz, the iPhone 16 lags behind competitors offering smoother 120 Hz displays. 

While the touchscreen response time itself remains competitive at 51-84 milliseconds, the lower refresh rate translates to less fluid animations.

DxOMark’s analysis also measured a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) frequency of 480 Hz. This flickering rate matches the Samsung Galaxy S24, and while fast enough for most users to avoid issues, those sensitive to flickering displays might want to consider alternatives.

Despite the newer and older iPhone being kept in the same settings and going through the same use, the iPhone 14 Pro only dropped to 85 percent, while the iPhone 16 Pro was at 58 percent. In an investor note shared by 9to5Mac, Barclays analysts reveal that Apple has recently reduced iPhone 16 production by three million units. According to supply chain checks, these cuts were made at a key semiconductor partner for iPhone orders.

iPhone 16 production cut is linked to lower-than-expected demand

Barclays analysts suggest that iPhone 16 shipments are expected to decline by 15% year-over-year. Despite this, the performance for the previous quarter aligns with expectations. The report mentions that the September quarter will see 51 million iPhone 16 units shipped, benefitting from two extra days of sell-through compared to the iPhone 15 models.

Looking ahead, the December quarter presents more challenges. The production cut, coupled with reduced demand, puts iPhone 16 shipments at greater risk.

Analysts believe this slowdown may be tied to Apple’s rollout of Apple Intelligence, the company’s new AI features, which have yet to fully launch. This delayed Apple Intelligence rollout is also expected to contribute to the softer demand. This is notable because the new models (especially the Pro models) have barely anything different in appearance, aside from the new Capture button of course.

The gradual release of Apple Intelligence appears to be a key factor in the reduced demand. The company launched iOS 18.1 Beta with Apple Intelligence for the iPhone 16 in mid-September, but the delay in delivering the full set of features could have contributed to a “softer” reception from consumers.

Barclays analysts noted, “We think Sep-Q iPhone units are on track for 51M as the best case (consensus and Barclays both at 51M for Sep-Q estimate), assuming some channel fill in line or better vs. last year due to more selling days. We believe July and August sell-through has been flattish Y/Y.”

But that’s not all, the 2024 iPhones were showcased with changes in their design, with one of the biggest new inclusions being a dedicated camera button. We’ve seen this in the past on Android phones, but it is not as common anymore. So why is Apple bringing this back? It begs the question, do we really need a dedicated camera button on smartphones?

History of Camera Buttons on Smartphones.

A physical camera button has been featured on various smartphones in the past. Back in the late 2000s, Samsung had also dabbled with the dedicated camera button in models like the Galaxy K Zoom. Other brands also launched devices with these buttons but in 2024, Sony is the last remaining Android smartphone maker with a hardware camera button. You can find these on Sony’s flagship Xperia series smartphones.

Now, it seems Apple wants to iterate on this feature, bringing it to its own premium offering. The camera button can be found on all four iPhone models, namely the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. It made sense that dedicated buttons lost popularity over time as smartphone cameras weren’t as advanced as their modern counterparts. But does that really justify its return?

What are the advantages of a physical camera button?

From photography enthusiasts to regular users taking a photo, a physical button with tactile feedback is definitely a better experience than the on-screen control. Image stabilization has become a lot more prominent now, but a camera button still helps in lowering the risk of a shaky shot. Taking a picture usually involves relying on the autofocus, or manually inputting it by tapping on the screen.

This is where Apple’s implementation of the camera button shines. The iPhone 16’s buttons are touch sensitive, basically allowing users to trigger multiple functions at ease. Apart from just clicking pictures, it can even help in video recording and adjusting various camera settings like zoom with simple swipes. This sounds pretty great for the most part, but people don’t always take pictures like holding a camera (landscape). Using the button when it is vertical (portrait), the awkward position of the button would have you return to the on-display controls.

So is it really worth it?

Adding another way of inputting some controls does not always make it convenient. Yes, the feature is helpful and makes it more tactile. Video artists, photographers, and vloggers will likely find great use of it. But I can’t help but feel that this feature is redundant. Apple has removed hardware like the 3.5mm audio jack for more space internally, but I’d rather have that over a camera button. The new button lets you access many things if you can learn it. But it’s almost like the Dynamic Island gimmick. Don’t get me wrong, the buttons are better than the Dynamic Island but not by a large margin.

Industry Response

Apple’s decisions usually lead to a larger trend that follows suit. It shouldn’t be too long till we see Android smartphone manufacturers bringing physical camera buttons into their upcoming devices. Chinese brands like Oppo are reportedly working on it already. Although it remains to be seen how each company improves on it.

This is mainly because Apple tends to offer full device repairs rather than addressing individual component issues. Even small problems with the camera button are categorized as “Other damage,” which can lead to higher repair costs. Since the capacitive button consists of up to nine components, it introduces multiple potential points of failure.

What Went Wrong?

From Apple’s marketing materials, the intention behind the capacitive button was clear. The idea was to give users a better camera experience: light taps would open menus, swiping would adjust settings, and the button would act as a camera shutter. On paper, this sounds innovative. In practice, it’s a different story.

Users have reported that the button doesn’t work as smoothly as Apple suggests. The positioning is awkward, making it difficult to reach when holding the phone horizontally or vertically. For many, trying to use the button for photography results in poor ergonomics, making it hard to hold the phone steadily while pressing the button.

Another issue is the small interface that pops up when using the button to adjust camera settings. Apple‘s latest iPhone 16 lineup arrived with a focus on incremental improvements rather than revolutionary leaps. The main highlight this year was “Apple Intelligence”, but that feature is in MIA. Besides this, the company touted improved battery life across the lineup.

The company claimed the iPhone 16 Pro Max delivers four extra hours of video playback compared to its predecessor, with the base iPhone 16 offering two additional hours. However, a recent test by popular tech YouTuber MrWhosetheboss sheds light on real-world battery performance.

The YouTuber put the new iPhones to the test, pitting them against their predecessors and the ever-present Android competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. And the results are a mixed bag.

The test mimicked real-life scenarios, cycling through popular apps like social media, YouTube, and Slack. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, wielding a hefty 5,000 mAh battery, emerged the clear winner here, lasting a whopping 12 hours and 31 minutes.  

The iPhone 16 Pro Max came in second with a respectable 11 hours and 22 minutes, a noticeable improvement over the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 9 hours and 35 minutes.

The rest of the iPhone 16 lineup displayed a similar pattern. Both the Plus and Pro clocked in at 8 hours and 19 minutes, while the standard iPhone 16 matched that time. All the iPhone 16 models surpassed their iPhone 15 counterparts, but none quite reached the heights of the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Apple‘s latest iPhone line-up might not be generating the usual opening weekend fervor. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his Apple supply chain insights, reported “lower-than-expected” demand for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models based on pre-order data and shipping estimates.

While overall pre-orders reached an estimated 37 million units, that number falls short of the iPhone 15 series’ first-weekend performance by a significant 13%. The culprit seems to be the Pro models, with Kuo estimating a 27% and 16% drop in pre-orders for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max compared to their predecessors.

Interestingly, the standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus appear to be faring better than their iPhone 15 counterparts. Their pre-order numbers are reportedly up, but not enough to completely offset the Pro models’ sluggish start.

So, what’s holding back the Pro party? According to Kuo, a key factor is the delayed arrival of Apple Intelligence, the rumored suite of AI-powered features heavily promoted during the iPhone 16 launch event. These features won’t be available until the October release of iOS 18.1. Essentially, early adopters who snag a Pro model now will have to wait a month to experience the full package.

Another potential roadblock is competition. Kuo suggests the iPhone lineup is facing “intense competition” in China, a crucial market for Apple.  While the details are unclear, Huawei seems to be part of the equation, having just launched the world’s first tri-fold phone shortly after Apple’s iPhone 16 reveal. The foldable device appears to be doing well, with millions of pre-orders even before its official release.
