Apple finally announced a more affordable iPhone earlier this year with the iPhone 16e. Despite being one of the cheapest new iPhones, it still carries a hefty price tag. But after the OnePlus 13s launch (Review), the Chinese brand has a worthy contender in this budget premium phone category. So here are all the reasons the OnePlus 13s is a better pick over the iPhone 16e.

OnePlus 13s vs iPhone 16e: Smoother, Brighter, & Taller

The OnePlus 13s is just superior in terms of display. It sports a taller 6.32-inch OLED display that has a 1.5K resolution, 1600 nits of peak brightness, Dolby Vision, and 1-120Hz variable refresh rate thanks to LTPO technology. While the iPhone 16e has a more compact 6.1-inch OLED display, the screen only has a standard 60Hz refresh rate, FHD+ resolution, and up to 1200 nits of peak brightness.

Considering how even mid range or budget phones pack a higher refresh rate display, the iPhone 16e suffers from the same issue as the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. In other words, the OnePlus 13s simply feels a lot more smoother to use.

Two Cameras Over One

Similar to the display department, the Cupertino based giant’s iPhone 16e disappoints in the camera department as well. Despite spending hundreds of dollars, the cheapest iPhone 16 series model only offers a single 48MP rear facing camera. Apple claims that this sensor does offer “optical quality-like” 2x zoom, but it is still an in-sensor crop. Meanwhile, the front houses a 12MP selfie shooter with auto focus.

The cameras are one of the biggest gripes I had with the OnePlus 13s, and it is still a better deal here. On the back, you get a 50MP main and 50MP telephoto shooter with 2x optical zoom. The primary sensor is bigger than the iPhone 16e’s camera, while the telephoto shooter offers true optical magnification. Even the selfie camera has a higher 32MP resolution with autofocus as well.

Battery Size and Charging

OnePlus shakes up the compact smartphone market with a humongous 5,850mAh battery pack on the OnePlus 13s. It also supports up to 80W wired fast charging. In comparison, the iPhone 16e arrives with a 4,005mAh (expected) cell and supports around 20W wired fast charging. So, in terms of both battery size and charging speeds, the OnePlus 13s is a clear winner once again.

Pricing

It isn’t a fair comparison if we don’t compare the pricing of the two devices. If the iPhone 16e was more affordable than the OnePlus 13s, the former might have had its own argument of having better value. But the iPhone 16e starts from 599 US Dollars or 59,999 INR in the Indian market for the 128GB base storage option. On the other hand, the OnePlus 13s sells for 54,999 INR for the 256GB standard option, which simply makes it a better deal unless you wish to stick to the Apple ecosystem.

Apple recently launched its most affordable iPhone yet, the 16e, and it comes with some notable upgrades. The model lands squarely between the iPhone 15 and the standard iPhone 16, not just in features, but also in price. 

But there’s a catch. The iPhone 15 is getting cheaper in many markets as it is a gen-old model now. And with the 16e only a modest step up in price, there’s a common debate among all of us. Should I go for the discounted iPhone 15, or spend a little more for the newer iPhone 16e?

It’s not a simple yes-or-no scenario. On paper, the iPhone 16e brings some newer internals and a slightly larger battery. But there are trade-offs, and the decision depends on how much you value certain hardware features over others.

Look That’s… Almost the Same

Apple hasn’t strayed far from its existing design language in either phone. Both phones have flat front and back panels with nearly identical dimensions. The iPhone 15 measures 147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8 mm, while the 16e comes in just slightly shorter and narrower at 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm. 

The weight difference is also barely anything, 171 grams versus 167 grams. Both use an aluminum frame and glass front and back, and both maintain IP68 water and dust resistance.

That said, there are enough visual differences to tell them apart. The iPhone 15 has a Dynamic Island module on the front and a diagonally arranged camera sensor in back. Whereas, the 16e settles for a conventional static display notch and a single camera at the back. 

The colors also differ slightly, with the iPhone 15 offering more playful options like pink, green, and yellow, while the iPhone 16e sticks with black and white. 

Brighter on the 15, Smoother on Neither

Both phones sport a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. They support HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and both are protected by Ceramic Shield glass. The differences lie in brightness.

The iPhone 15 has the upper hand in peak brightness, reaching 2000 nits versus 1200 nits on the iPhone 16e. That makes it easier to use outdoors in direct sunlight. 

However, Apple hasn’t given either phone a high refresh rate screen. 60Hz remains the norm for non-Pro iPhones even in 2025. So if you were hoping for smoother scrolling or gaming, you’ll need to look elsewhere in the lineup.

Performance is a clean win for the 16e

The biggest internal change is the chip. The iPhone 15 runs on the Apple A16 Bionic, which powers the iPhone 14 Pro series. It’s still a capable processor, built on a 4nm process, with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU.

The iPhone 16e, on the other hand, gets the newer Apple A18 chip, built on a more efficient 3nm process. Clock speeds are slightly higher (4.04 GHz on the performance cores vs. 3.46 GHz on the A16). You also get 8GB of RAM versus 6GB on the iPhone 15.

That should theoretically offer better multitasking and longer-term software support. But in day-to-day use, you’re unlikely to notice major differences unless you’re doing something resource-heavy. App launches, camera performance, and general navigation feel nearly identical between the two.

Cameras

Here’s where the iPhone 15 arguably pulls ahead, or at least offers more flexibility. It features a dual-camera setup: a 48MP main sensor and a 12MP ultrawide sensor. The iPhone 16e drops the ultrawide entirely and sticks to a single 48MP camera.

That means no ultrawide photography on the 16e. For users who rely on that second lens, this could be a noticeable downgrade.

That said, the 16e does include Apple’s newer 3D spatial audio recording feature for both the main and front cameras, something the iPhone 15 lacks. But unless you’re capturing content for an Apple Vision Pro, that feature feels more niche than essential.

Battery and Charging

The iPhone 16e has a 4005 mAh battery, a sizable jump over the iPhone 15’s 3349 mAh. That’s a real difference, on paper, at least. With more efficient 3nm silicon, the 16e might last a bit longer in daily usage, especially under lighter loads.

But there’s a catch in charging. The iPhone 15 supports faster wireless charging: 15W with MagSafe or Qi2, and it can reverse charge up to 4.5W. The iPhone 16e drops MagSafe entirely and maxes out at 7.5W wireless charging on standard Qi pads.

Wired charging remains at 50% in 30 minutes on both models, and both use USB-C, though only at USB 2.0 speeds.

By the time you buy either of these phones, both will run iOS 18. While the iPhone 16e ships with 18.3.1 and the iPhone 15 requires an upgrade, the user experience is fundamentally the same.

The A18 chip in the 16e might get software support a year longer than the A16 in the 15, though Apple hasn’t made that timeline public yet. Historically, iPhones receive around five years of updates, and that likely holds for both.

Connectivity and Sensors

The iPhone 16e adds support for NavIC positioning (India’s satellite system), which may improve accuracy in certain regions. Otherwise, both phones offer dual eSIM support, Face ID, satellite emergency services, and Ultra Wideband (Gen 2 for iPhone 15).

Both have stereo speakers and no headphone jack, as expected. Storage options start at 128GB and go up to 512GB on both.

Price

The iPhone 15 starts at ₹63,999 in India, with sale prices bringing it down to as low as ₹58,999. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16e starts at ₹60,000. Even at its original price, that’s a minimal difference, for which you get wireless charging support, better cameras, and a more modern design. Considering the sales price, you get even better value. 

As is the truth, the 16e is a cut-down version of the iPhone 14. It’s that it comes with a slightly better chip and improved battery life. 

The Bottom Line

If you’re a casual user looking for the best value, the iPhone 15 is still a practical and well-rounded device, especially at its current price. It offers solid performance, versatile cameras, and faster wireless charging.

The iPhone 16e is newer and has some meaningful improvements. It has a slightly better processor, more RAM, and longer battery life. But those changes are incremental, and the single camera setup limits its appeal for users who want more shooting flexibility.

Unless you need the latest chip or a bit more RAM for future-proofing, the iPhone 15 probably remains the better deal, at least for now.

Google’s Pixel 9a and Apple’s iPhone 16e are each company’s latest attempts to appeal to the broader mid-range market. Both are cut-down versions of their flagship counterparts and both lean on custom, in-house silicon for raw horsepower—Tensor G4 on the Pixel 9a and Apple’s A18 for the iPhone 16e.

That’s about where the similarities end.

The two chips bring very different visions for what smartphone performance should look like in 2025. Google’s chip emphasizes AI performance while Apple’s solution focuses on raw power and power efficiency. 

So, how do these custom chips actually stack up? Let’s break down the key differences.

Performance: Still No Contest

Google’s Tensor G4 is, at least on paper, a mild upgrade over last year’s G3. It still relies on a semi-custom design, again developed in collaboration with Samsung. Built on Samsung’s 4nm process, the G4 doesn’t bring a significant leap in performance. 

It has an octa-core CPU configuration with one high-performance Cortex-X4 core, four Cortex-A720 performance cores, and four Cortex-A520 efficiency cores.

In practice, that translates to performance that is adequate for day-to-day tasks like browsing, app switching, and media consumption.

Benchmark results show the G4 performing somewhere between Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 which makes sense given the chip’s architecture and thermal limitations in a mid-range phone.

Apple’s A18, on the other hand, maintains the company’s lead in chip design. Built on TSMC’s second-gen 3nm (N3E) process, it offers better efficiency and performance headroom than the previous A17. It features two high-performance cores and four efficiency cores, with a 4-core GPU. 

That’s still a less GPU core than a regular iPhone 16’s A18 chip. Even then, the A18’s single-core, multi-core, and GPU performance is well ahead of the G4 and even ahead of many Android flagships running Snapdragon processors.

AI Features

The Tensor G4’s main selling point isn’t raw horsepower. It’s machine learning. Google has doubled down on AI-first features, and the Pixel 9a understandably benefits from that. 

It has AI features like Best Take, Magic Editor, on-device transcription, and translation are all supported by the G4’s dedicated TPU. For users who care about AI tools more than gaming frame rates, Pixel 9a delivers a compelling experience. 

The A18 integrates Apple’s latest 16-core Neural Engine, which processes over 35 trillion operations per second. While Apple doesn’t highlight its AI capabilities as loudly as Google does, iOS 18 brings new AI enhancements to Siri, Photos, and on-device summarization. 

In raw numbers, Apple’s Neural Engine is faster, but Google uses its TPU more aggressively throughout the UI. Still, the experience depends on whether you want your phone to guess your intent or stay out of the way.

Camera Processing

Google has long relied on computational photography to deliver strong camera performance even on budget models, and the 9a is no exception. 

The Tensor G4 enables real-time HDR, Super Res Zoom, and Night Sight, features that now run faster and more consistently. Image processing is still tuned for dramatic contrast and clarity, with a slight overprocessing bias. But it’s effective—and again, much of this happens thanks to the TPU, not the CPU or GPU.

Apple’s A18 powers a 48MP camera in the iPhone 16e and brings improvements to Smart HDR and Deep Fusion resulting in more natural images. Apple’s photos should be more balanced and with more realistic color reproduction. 

Battery Life and Efficiency

Samsung’s 4nm node continues to be a weakness for Google’s silicon. The Tensor G4, while better than its predecessors in heat management, still lags behind Apple in power efficiency. 

Apple’s A18 benefits from the more efficient N3E node and a mature power management strategy. 

On paper, that means the iPhone 16e should outlast the Pixel 9a when it comes to battery efficiency. Of course, real-world results will vary depending on how people use their phones and the types of apps they run. However, from a purely technical standpoint, Apple’s A18 is clearly ahead of Google’s Tensor G4 in the efficiency game.

The Broader Picture

If there’s one thing the Tensor G4 and Apple’s A18 make clear, it’s that these two companies are playing very different games. Google is all-in on AI and software-first experiences, while Apple wants to lead on performance and efficiency at the silicon level.

That said, value still matters. The Pixel 9a costs around $499, while the iPhone 16e starts at $599. For many, the price difference, plus the suite of Google’s AI features, may be enough to make the 9a a smart buy. But for those looking for top-tier performance, the iPhone 16e makes more sense.

In terms of raw performance, Apple has an edge since the iPhone 16e packs the latest Apple A18 chipset. Google’s Pixel 9a brings a more versatile experience thanks to its 40MP (Main) + 13MP (Ultra Wide) dual camera setup on the rear. Apple only offers a single 48MP camera at the back with supposed 2x lossless zoom, but an ultra wide is a better option between the two. You’re getting a 13MP selfie shooter on the Pixel 9a, while the iPhone brings a 12MP sensor along with the Face ID suit of sensors as well.

Pricing and Verdict

The Google Pixel 9a starts from 499 US Dollars for the 128GB model with its 256GB option costing 599 US Dollars. For the same price as the higher end option, you get the 128GB iPhone 16e for 599 US Dollars. So the Pixel 9a is easily the better value in most cases. But for those who are already in the Apple ecosystem or always wanted to try an iPhone, the iPhone 16e is the most cost effective option right now. Keep in mind that the older iPhone 15 is currently selling for the same price and is easily recommendable over the 16e.

Apple iPhone 16e improves on repairability

The Cupertino based giant’s products were known for their difficulties in repair. Apple had been notorious for cracking down on third party and self repairs in the past. It has made strides in this regard with its recent models, especially in the iPhones. Now, the iPhone 16e is continuing to improve with hardware design elements like an “electrically released adhesive”. This was first seen on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

In other words, the technology helps make battery replacement easier than before. iFixit demonstrated this by using its VoltClip at 12V, freeing the battery in just 5 seconds. This is also a lot better than the stretch release adhesives that can break off when prying the battery off. In the teardown video, iFixit also noted that they didn’t face any issues with parts pairing, meaning that Apple has loosened software restrictions as well. This is clear progress in the Right to Repair.

To recall, the iPhone 16e also debuted the brand’s C1 model which was also revealed in this teardown video. Apart from this, iFixit gave the device a repairability score of 7 out of 10. They stated that the repairability matches the other iPhone 16 series models as well. Although, iFixit said it’s hard to justify it as an upgrade owing to its price hike and suggests buying refurbished.

While Apple is clearly positioning the 16e as an entry-level iPhone for users who don’t need all the bells and whistles, the compromises make it hard to recommend, especially when the iPhone 15 or even the iPhone 16 are just a bit more expensive. If you’re considering the iPhone 16e, here’s why you might want to look elsewhere.

It’s Too Expensive for What It Offers

The biggest issue with the iPhone 16e is its price. Starting at $599, it sits uncomfortably close to the iPhone 15, which costs just $100 more. For that extra money, you get a brighter display, a second camera, MagSafe charging, and a more refined design.

Historically, the iPhone SE was meant to be a budget-friendly alternative to Apple’s flagship models. The 16e, however, isn’t particularly affordable, especially when compared to Android devices that offer high refresh-rate displays, multiple cameras, and better value for the same price.

No MagSafe

In 2025, MagSafe has become a standard iPhone feature. From chargers to accessories, Apple’s entire ecosystem is built around the magnetic system introduced with the iPhone 12. The iPhone 16e, inexplicably, does not support MagSafe, meaning you won’t be able to use Apple’s wireless battery packs, car mounts, or magnetic wallet attachments.

Instead, it only supports standard Qi wireless charging, which is not only slower but also lacks the convenience that MagSafe provides. This feels like a deliberate omission rather than a necessary cost-cutting measure, and it makes the 16e feel outdated right out of the box.

Notch Instead of Dynamic Island

Apple introduced the Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro, and by now, most iPhones have adopted it, except for the iPhone 16e. Instead of the more functional, interactive Dynamic Island, the 16e retains the outdated notch design.

This makes the phone feel stuck in the past, especially when even mid-range Android phones are pushing the envelope with punch-hole displays and under-display camera technology. If you’re upgrading from an older iPhone, you’re not getting Apple’s latest UI advancements, which is a serious downside.

A Single Camera That Feels Limited

While Apple touts the 16e’s 48MP main camera, it lacks the versatility of the dual-camera setup on the iPhone 15 and 16. There’s no ultra-wide lens, no macro mode, and no sensor-shift stabilization like on the standard iPhone 16.

Sure, the 16e offers a 2x zoom using sensor cropping, but that’s not the same as having a dedicated telephoto or ultra-wide option. If you care about smartphone photography, even casually, you’re much better off with the iPhone 15, which offers a wider range of shooting options and better overall camera performance.

Battery Life is Good But Not a Game Changer

Apple claims the iPhone 16e has excellent battery life, with up to 26 hours of video playback. That’s great, thanks to its C1 modem, but it’s only marginally better than the iPhone 15, which lasts around 24 hours.

For real battery-life gains, you’d need to jump to the iPhone 15 Plus or iPhone 16 Plus. If battery life is a major factor in your decision, you’re better off getting a phone that truly excels in this area rather than settling for minor improvements. Some Android phones also feature silicon-carbon batteries, offering massive capacity and ultra-fast charging.

Who is the iPhone 16e For?

That’s the million-dollar question. The iPhone 16e doesn’t seem to be aimed at existing iPhone users looking for an upgrade, it lacks key features like MagSafe, an ultra-wide camera, and Dynamic Island. It’s also not a great value for budget-conscious shoppers since $599 is still a lot of money for a phone that’s missing features found on last year’s models.

If you’re coming from an iPhone SE 3 or iPhone 11, the 16e might feel like a step up in some ways, but it also introduces compromises that make it hard to justify over an iPhone 15. And if you’re switching from Android, there are better options in this price range that offer more features and fewer limitations.

Final Verdict: Wait or Spend More

Apple has officially started shipping the iPhone 16e, the successor to the iPhone SE (3rd Gen) starting today. This time, the phone comes with a major design overhaul. 

The new budget iPhone ditches the dated look of its predecessor in favor of flat sides, slimmer bezels, a notch, and even the Action Button. But while the 16e finally feels like it belongs in the modern iPhone lineup, it’s also missing a feature that makes absolutely no sense: MagSafe.

The iPhone 16e does support magnetic wireless charging, but only at 7.5W—and crucially, it lacks the MagSafe ring that lets accessories and chargers snap securely into place. According to Apple, though, this omission doesn’t really matter for the 16e’s target audience.

In a statement to Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, an unnamed Apple representative said that “most people in the 16e’s target audience exclusively charge their phones by plugging them into a charging cable.”

That might have been a reasonable argument a few years ago, but at this point, MagSafe is everywhere—not just for charging, but as a key part of Apple’s accessory ecosystem. Leaving it out on a 2025 iPhone feels like an unnecessary compromise.

For a phone that’s supposed to bring the iPhone experience to more people, Apple sure picked a weird feature to cut.

There’s a workaround—sort of

There is a workaround, though, if you still want the MagSafe experience. You can rather buy a Magsafe compatible case which surely won’t boost the charging speed, but at least it’ll let you use MagSafe accessories without a second thought.

The iPhone 16e starts at $599 in the US for the 128GB variant, going up to $899 for the 512GB model. In India, pricing starts at ₹59,999 and tops out at ₹89,900.

The speculation originated from sources within the accessories industry, with claims that the iPhone 16e’s built-in magnets for MagSafe might have interfered with Apple’s in-house C1 modem. For those unfamiliar, this modem is a key milestone in Apple’s shift away from Qualcomm, whuch just made its debut with the iPhone 16e.

Given the importance of seamless connectivity, some believed that Apple had chosen to prioritize 5G performance over magnetic charging.

Apple has denied the speculated theory

When asked for clarification, the company confirmed (via Macworld) that the C1 modem has nothing to do with their decision to exclude MagSafe from the iPhone 16e. Although the company didn’t offer an alternative explanation, it’s assumed that the omission is a strategic move, aimed at distinguishing the iPhone 16e from higher-end models in the lineup.
