<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a>&#8216;s next Pro iPhone models could be getting one of the biggest camera hardware upgrades in years. According to recent supply-chain reports, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-18-pro/">iPhone 18 Pro</a> series is expected to feature a new variable-aperture main camera, bringing a level of hardware flexibility that has traditionally been more common on dedicated cameras and a handful of Android flagships.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-713020" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1920x1080.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The upgrade is reportedly not cheap. Industry sources claim the new moving lens system carries an average selling price roughly 50% higher than the premium 7P lens currently used in Apple&#8217;s Pro iPhones.</p>

<p>What&#8217;s interesting is that, despite the higher hardware costs, there are currently no strong indications that Apple plans to significantly raise prices for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Of course, launch pricing is still many months away, so that could change. But for now, the reports suggest Apple may be willing to absorb at least some of the additional cost.</p>

<p>The camera system itself is expected to remain familiar in many ways. Current leaks point to Apple retaining a triple 48MP setup, with the biggest change centered on the primary camera. A variable aperture would allow the lens to physically adjust how much light enters the sensor, potentially improving low-light photography while also offering better control over depth of field in brighter conditions.</p>

<p>If implemented well, it could give photographers more flexibility without requiring any extra effort from the user. Most people may never even notice the hardware working in the background, but the resulting images could benefit from it.</p>

<p>Beyond the camera, the phones are also expected to debut with Apple&#8217;s next-generation A20 Pro chip and a refreshed version of the Camera app in iOS 27. Some reports have also hinted at new color options, including a darker cherry-inspired finish.</p>

<p>For now, though, the variable-aperture camera is shaping up to be the headline feature. Apple has generally preferred to rely on software and computational photography improvements over dramatic camera hardware changes, which is part of what makes this particular rumor stand out a bit more than usual.</p>

<p>As always with supply-chain leaks, it&#8217;s worth keeping expectations in check until Apple makes things official. Still, if these reports prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro could end up delivering one of the more meaningful camera upgrades the series has seen in recent years.</p>

<p>The brand, which is known for replacing standard smartphone glass and aluminum with materials like gold, titanium, and crocodile leather, just announced its new Royal Colors collection. It is a series of custom <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/iphone-18-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 18 Pro</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/iphone-18-pro-max/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pro Max</a> models that you can reserve starting May 20.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="572" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Caviar-Royal-Colors-collection-1024x572.jpg?x44794" alt="Caviar Royal Colors collection" class="wp-image-738569" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Caviar-Royal-Colors-collection-1024x572.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Caviar-Royal-Colors-collection-300x167.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Caviar-Royal-Colors-collection-768x429.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Caviar-Royal-Colors-collection-1536x857.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Caviar-Royal-Colors-collection-2048x1143.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Caviar-Royal-Colors-collection-696x388.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Caviar-Royal-Colors-collection-1068x596.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Caviar-Royal-Colors-collection-1920x1072.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Caviar-Royal-Colors-collection-753x420.jpg 753w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Reserving one of these phones now does not mean you get to see what the iPhone 18 Pro looks like ahead of time. Instead, you are essentially paying in advance for the custom exterior. Once Apple officially releases the iPhone 18 Pro series later this year, Caviar will purchase the retail devices, remove the original casing, and install the new materials before shipping them out to buyers.</p>

<p>The Royal Colors collection is based on historical themes, with four different designs available. The Imperator model uses purple crocodile leather and 24-karat gold plating, featuring a pattern meant to look like a Roman toga. The King model takes a different approach, using white crocodile leather and a silver-toned body that incorporates a French fleur-de-lis motif.</p>

<p>For a darker aesthetic, the Black Prince model is themed around medieval armor. It uses black leather and a matte titanium upper panel with a black PVD coating. The fourth option, the Pharaoh model, uses blue crocodile leather and 24-karat gold plating with an Art Deco palm pattern inspired by ancient Egyptian artifacts.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a> does not usually make big design changes every year, and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/11/13/iphone-18-pro-max-thickest-iphone/">iPhone 18 Pro Max</a> looks set to follow that pattern. At a glance, it feels familiar. But a couple of smaller changes underneath could end up making a &#8220;noticeable&#8221; difference.</p>

<p>A new hands-on video <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw3wvp5e8sE">showing</a> metal dummy units of the iPhone 18 Pro Max has surfaced online, giving us a clearer look at what might be coming. The source behind it has a decent track record. Their early preview of the iPhone 17 lineup last year turned out to be quite close to what Apple eventually announced, so this one is worth paying attention to.</p>

<p>One of the more obvious changes is the Dynamic Island. According to the dummy, it is getting smaller, by roughly 25%. That brings it down from just over 20mm to about 15mm. It will still disappoint people hoping for a hole-punch cutout, but that&#8217;s likely reserved for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/15/apples-20th-anniversary-iphone-to-bring-wild-upgrades-no-bezels-no-cutout-and-a-100-silicon-battery/">20th anniversary iPhone</a>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092832-1024x576.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-736192" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092832-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092832-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092832-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092832-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092832-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092832-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092832-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092832.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The camera setup is where things get a bit more interesting. Total thickness, including the camera plateau, is now around 11.54mm, up from 11.23mm on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. With the lenses included, that figure reportedly goes up to 13.77mm, compared to 12.92mm previously.</p>

<p>That extra space suggests Apple may be working with larger sensors, or possibly pushing optical zoom back to 5x after stepping it down to 4x last year, or even a mix of both. Either way, the dummy points to some meaningful changes in the camera hardware.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092807-1024x576.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-736194" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092807-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092807-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092807-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092807-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092807-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092807-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092807-747x420.png 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot-2026-04-25-092807.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Apple has been gradually moving to larger sensors over the years, with the iPhone 17 Pro Max already catching up in main sensor size, using a 1/1.28&#8243; sensor, the same as the Vivo X200 Ultra. Based on these dummy units, the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s camera system could be worth a closer look.</p>

<p>In terms of size, the phone is said to be marginally taller and wider than the current model, with a slight bump in thickness as well. That could be down to a larger battery, though nothing is confirmed yet.</p>

<p>The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to arrive later this year, likely alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone, which is rumored to be called the Ultra. The rest of the lineup is expected to follow sometime in early 2027.</p>

<p>According to a new tip from Chinese leaker WhyLab, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-18-pro/">iPhone 18 Pro</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-18-pro-max/">iPhone 18 Pro Max</a> could feature upgraded front-facing cameras. The leak claims that both Pro models may switch to 24MP selfie sensors. If that happens, it would be another step up in resolution. The iPhone 17 lineup moved to 18MP front cameras, ending Apple’s long run with 12MP sensors that stretched from the iPhone 11 through the iPhone 16 lineup.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-713020" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1920x1080.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>A jump to 24MP would likely improve detail in selfies and video calls, and could also help with portrait shots and low-light performance. That said, WhyLab described the information as a strong possibility rather than confirmed specifications, so it’s still too early to treat this as final.</p>

<p>Previous reports from JP Morgan and supply chain sources have also <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/01/05/apple-iphone-17-24mp-selfie-camera/">mentioned</a> the possibility of a 24MP front camera for the iPhone 18 Pro models. If accurate, it would fit Apple’s usual pattern of gradual hardware upgrades rather than major one-year leaps.</p>

<p>On the design front, big changes don’t appear to be on the table. However, the Dynamic Island could reportedly become smaller. Some recent leaks suggest Apple may reduce the width of the cutout by around 35%, possibly by moving certain Face ID components, such as the IR flood illuminator, under the display. This would result in a slimmer pill-shaped cutout while keeping the core TrueDepth system intact.</p>

<p>Earlier rumors suggested Apple might experiment with a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/01/17/iphone-18-pro-renders-design-changes-colors-features/">top-left punch-hole camera</a> or <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/05/iphone-18-pro-under-display-face-id-redesign/">fully under-display Face ID</a>, but those claims have since been questioned, with some reports blaming translation errors for the confusion. For now, a smaller centered Dynamic Island seems to be the more consistent expectation.</p>

<p>There’s still plenty of time before the iPhone 18 series launches. likely in September 2026, and plans can always change. But if these early leaks are accurate, Apple’s next Pro models could continue focusing on steady improvements to the front camera experience.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-713020" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1920x1080.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>According to GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu, Apple intends to keep the starting prices of the iPhone 18 Pro and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/02/06/iphone-18-pro-max-battery-5000mah-leak/">iPhone 18 Pro Max</a> in line with their predecessors. That would mean $1,099 and $1,199 respectively for base 256GB configurations, assuming no last-minute changes.</p>

<p>The information comes from supply chain checks shared in a note reviewed by MacRumors. Pu suggests Apple has been negotiating aggressively with memory suppliers, including Samsung and SK Hynix, to soften the impact of rising DRAM and NAND prices. Similar negotiations are reportedly taking place around display panels and camera modules.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center"><em>In short, Apple appears willing to absorb some of the pressure.</em></h2>

<p>Apple has also shifted to quarterly memory contract negotiations instead of semi-annual agreements, giving it more flexibility, though that could also mean exposure to further price bumps later in 2026.</p>

<p>Even so, Kuo believes Apple’s strategy is clear: keep entry pricing stable for the Pro models, even if that trims margins slightly in the short term.</p>

<p>That wouldn’t be surprising. Apple’s Services business continues to grow steadily, bringing in over $30 billion in a single quarter recently. A stable hardware price helps protect market share, and any margin pressure on devices can be offset over time through ecosystem revenue.</p>

<p>The broader industry isn’t quite as insulated. IDC has warned that smartphone prices could rise by 6–8% this year due to component shortages. Meanwhile, Samsung executives have already hinted at cost pressures ahead of upcoming launches.</p>

<p>For now, the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to arrive in September 2026. Nothing is official yet, and pricing decisions often come down to late-stage market conditions. But if these reports hold true, Apple seems prepared to lean on its scale.</p>

<p>The iPhone battery may finally cross the 5,000mAh mark, signalling a notable shift in <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple’s</a> long-standing approach to battery sizing. Fresh supply chain chatter, amplified by well-known tipster Digital Chat Station, hints at meaningful changes coming to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Here’s a look at what the new leak has revealed.</p>

<h3><strong>Major battery upgrade tipped for iPhone 18 Pro Max</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="960" height="248" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-27.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-726008" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-27.png 960w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-27-300x78.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-27-768x198.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-27-696x180.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px" /><figcaption>Apple iPhoen 18 Pro Max&#8217;s battery size tipped by DCS</figcaption></figure>

<p>According to DCS, supply chain sources indicate that the Chinese version of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-18-pro-max">iPhone 18 Pro Max</a> could feature a battery rated at around 5000mAh±, while the international variant may see maximum sample capacities in the range of 5100–5200mAh±. If accurate, this would represent a further increase over the iPhone 17 Pro Max, whose eSIM variant already crossed the 5,000mAh mark with a 5,088mAh battery, suggesting Apple may continue gradually scaling capacity year-on-year.</p>

<p>Interestingly, the shift comes at a time when some Android manufacturers are reportedly exploring batteries approaching or even surpassing 10,000mAh capacities, especially in devices focused on endurance and gaming. Honor recently unveiled the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/honor-win">Honor Win</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/honor-win-rt">Win RT</a> performance-focused flagship phones packed with a 10,000mAh battery, whereas the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/realme-p4-power">Realme P4 Power</a> mid-range performance phones offer 10,001mAh battery.</p>

<p>Apple’s strategy, however, has historically relied on tight hardware-software integration and power-efficient silicon rather than simply increasing battery size. This is where the rumored 2nm A20 Pro chip could play a critical role. A more advanced manufacturing process typically improves power efficiency, meaning the real-world gains may come from a combination of higher capacity and smarter energy management.</p>

<p>A report from November 2025 suggested that the rumoured iPhone 18 Pro Max could <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/11/13/iphone-18-pro-max-thickest-iphone/">weigh over 240 grams</a>, potentially making it Apple’s heaviest and thickest flagship yet. With the latest battery leak, the reason behind this design shift may now be clearer.</p>

<p>If the leaks hold true, users could see longer screen-on times, improved sustained performance for photography and video recording, and potentially better standby longevity. For heavy users, this might address long-standing complaints about battery drain during demanding tasks. Still, as with any early supply chain information, final specifications may change before launch.</p>

<p>According to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a> analyst Jeff Pu, the company plans to launch the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone in September 2026, while pushing the standard iPhone 18 models to spring 2027. The details were shared with investors and later reported by outlets including 9to5Mac.</p>

<p>On the hardware side, all three high-end models are said to feature 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip, reportedly built on a 2nm process. They are also expected to use Apple’s in-house C2 modem, marking a further shift away from third-party connectivity solutions.</p>

<p>Screen sizes are tipped to remain at 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. Camera hardware is said to include three 48MP sensors, including a periscope telephoto lens. Face ID stays in place, though under-display components could further <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/18/iphone-18-pro-could-get-a-major-front-redesign-with-unconventional-hole-punch-camera-placement/">shrink the Dynamic Island</a>.</p>

<h2>iPhone Fold lacks Dynamic Island</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-723876" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The bigger shift comes with the iPhone Fold. Apple’s first foldable is tipped to feature a 7.8-inch internal display paired with a 5.3-inch outer screen. Unlike the iPhone 18 series, it reportedly drops Face ID entirely and relies on Touch ID instead, possibly built into the power button. The body is said to combine titanium and aluminum, likely to balance durability, weight, and cost.</p>

<p>On the camera side, the foldable is expected to use a dual 48MP setup, likely consisting of a main and ultrawide sensor. Some earlier leaks have suggested Apple may skip a telephoto lens due to space constraints, which would not be unusual for the brand&#8217;s first-generation foldable.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-1024x768.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-723879" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-1024x768.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-300x225.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-768x576.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-696x522.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-1068x801.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-560x420.webp 560w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-80x60.webp 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-265x198.webp 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080.webp 1440w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>While selfie cameras were previously rumored to jump to 24MP, Pu now claims Apple will reuse the 18MP sensor seen in the iPhone 17 lineup. The iPhone Fold is expected to include two front-facing cameras &#8211; one on the cover display and another on the inner flexible screen. The absence of a Dynamic Island and the switch to Touch ID could result in a cleaner, more immersive experience, something iOS users have been waiting for on larger displays.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple’s</a> upcoming iPhone 18 lineup has reportedly entered the early prototyping stage, offering a preliminary look at how Apple may refine its display design across future models. The information, shared by Digital Chat Station, suggests changes that focus on on-screen layout and differentiation rather than a complete visual overhaul.</p>

<h3><strong>iPhone 18 series display details emerge</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="828" height="290" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-84.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-723391" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-84.png 828w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-84-300x105.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-84-768x269.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-84-696x244.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px" /></figure>

<p>According to DCS, all iPhone 18 models are currently being sampled internally. The standard iPhone 18 is said to feature a 6.27-inch LTPO OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and the existing Dynamic Island design. Alongside it, the iPhone Air 2 is tipped to arrive with a 6.55-inch LTPO 120Hz screen, continuing Apple’s push towards a thinner and lighter form factor while retaining a familiar front layout.</p>

<p>The biggest display shift is expected on the Pro models. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are reportedly testing 6.27-inch and 6.86-inch LTPO 120Hz panels respectively.</p>

<p>These screens are said to move part of the Face ID system beneath the display, leaving only a small punch-hole for the front camera. As a result, the Dynamic Island area is expected to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/18/iphone-18-pro-could-get-a-major-front-redesign-with-unconventional-hole-punch-camera-placement/">shrink for the first time</a> since it debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro series.</p>

<p>According to reports<strong>,</strong> Apple may change its traditional launch rhythm. Instead of unveiling the entire lineup together in autumn, the company could introduce its high-end models first. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and a foldable iPhone are expected to arrive in late 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 and a possible iPhone 18e may follow in spring 2027. There’s no specific launch timeframe for the iPhone Air 2.</p>

<p>On the hardware front, the Pro models are tipped to debut the A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process. Camera upgrades, including a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/11/07/new-iphone-18-pro-leak-backs-up-earlier-reports-on-variable-aperture-transparent-back/">variable aperture system</a> and improved image sensors, are also being tested. Together, these developments suggest Apple is preparing a more distinct split between standard and Pro iPhones in the iPhone 18 generation.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a>’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could bring a big change to the front design, according to a new report from The Information. The change would be one of the biggest shifts to the iPhone’s front layout in years.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="631" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-18-koncept-1024x631.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-719823" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-18-koncept-1024x631.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-18-koncept-300x185.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-18-koncept-768x474.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-18-koncept-696x429.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-18-koncept-1068x659.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-18-koncept-681x420.jpg 681w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-18-koncept-356x220.jpg 356w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-18-koncept.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Apple introduced the notch with the iPhone X in 2017 and switched to the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro models in 2022. The current iPhone 17 lineup still uses a pill-shaped cutout for the front camera and Face ID, while under-display solutions <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/09/iphone-18-series-is-confirmed-to-be-testing-under-display-face-id-claims-tipster/">have been under development</a> for some time.</p>

<p>The latest report claims Apple is planning to place most of the Face ID hardware under the AMOLED display, leaving only a small cutout for the front-facing camera. Unlike the current centered Dynamic Island, that camera is said to move to the upper left corner of the screen.</p>

<p>If accurate, this would give the iPhone 18 Pro an asymmetrical front design. That would be a departure from Apple’s long-standing preference for centered cutouts and symmetrical layouts. Earlier rumors had suggested Apple would either keep the pill-shaped cutout or simply shrink it further, so this would mark a different direction.</p>

<p>Camera upgrades may also be coming to the back. At least one rear camera, likely the main sensor, is expected to gain a variable aperture. This would allow the camera to physically adjust how much light enters the lens, offering better control over depth of field and low-light shots.</p>

<p>The same report also mentions Apple’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/14/apples-foldable-iphone-expected-to-boost-market/">foldable iPhone</a>. The device is said to feature a 5.3-inch display when folded and a larger 7.7-inch display when unfolded. The folded screen is expected to use a roughly 2:3 aspect ratio, while the unfolded display would shift closer to 4:3. This would make the device shorter in its folded form than some existing foldables.</p>

<p>Apple’s first foldable iPhone is now expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026.</p>

<p>As with all early reports, plans could still change, but the details suggest Apple is experimenting with more noticeable design shifts than usual for its next flagship cycle.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple’s</a> upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series has started making headlines several months ahead of its expected debut, thanks to early leaks from well-known tipsters. One of the latest news suggests that the top-end iPhone 18 Pro Max may gain additional weight.</p>

<h3><strong>iPhone 18 Pro Max could cross 240 grams</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="954" height="296" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/image-78.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-714979" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/image-78.png 954w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/image-78-300x93.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/image-78-768x238.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/image-78-696x216.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 954px) 100vw, 954px" /><figcaption>iPhone 18 Pro Max could be the heaviest iPhone </figcaption></figure>

<p>A recent Weibo post from Chinese tipster Instant Digital indicates that the <a href="https://www.gimcohina.com/product/apple-iphone-18-pro-max">iPhone 18 Pro Max</a> may become Apple’s heaviest model to date. The device is said to weigh more than 240 grams, surpassing both the <a href="https://www.gimcohina.com/product/apple-iphone-14-pro-max">iPhone 14 Pro Max</a> and <a href="https://www.gimcohina.com/product/apple-iphone-13-pro-max">iPhone 13 Pro Max</a>.</p>

<p>&nbsp; The leak further suggests the new model could be roughly 10 grams heavier than the 233-gram <a href="https://www.gimcohina.com/product/apple-iphone-17-pro-max">iPhone 17 Pro Max</a>. Alongside the added heft, the upcoming Pro Max may also gain a slightly thicker frame, measuring close to 9mm compared to the current model’s 8.8mm profile.</p>

<p>These changes are believed to stem from internal hardware upgrades. The iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to feature a new under-display Face ID system, reworked camera components, and a battery encased in steel. Such revisions typically influence overall weight, although Apple has not confirmed whether a larger battery is part of the upgrade path.</p>

<p>Another rumor hints that Apple aims to refine the appearance by matching the colour of the aluminium frame and the reinforced glass section on the rear panel, addressing the dual-tone contrast seen on the iPhone 17 Pro models.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max-1024x1024.png?x44794" alt="iPhone 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max" class="wp-image-706136" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max-300x300.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max-150x150.png 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max-768x768.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max-1536x1536.png 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max.png 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max-696x696.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max-1068x1068.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max-1920x1920.png 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-17-Pro-Max-420x420.png 420w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>iPhone 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Reports suggest Apple may follow a two-phase launch approach for the iPhone 18 family. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be introduced alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone in September 2026.</p>

<p>The standard iPhone 18 and entry-level iPhone 18e could arrive in early 2027. Separately, the second-generation iPhone Air, once linked to the same launch window as the 2 2026’s iPhone 18 Pro series, is now rumored to be delayed indefinitely.</p>

<p>We’re almost a year away from the iPhone 18 lineup, but <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a>’s early hardware tests are already making the rounds — and there are a few interesting additions.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-713020" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-1920x1080.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-17-Pro-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The most eye-catching aspect is the camera. Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station claims Apple is deep into testing a variable-aperture main camera for both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Instead of being stuck at f/1.78, the phone would be able to open up for shallow-depth portrait shots and then stop down in bright conditions for more controlled detail.</p>

<p>While this isn’t the first time we’re hearing about this addition, its recurrence from different sources certainly reaffirms the possibility of this feature being included in the upcoming models. According to a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/10/17/iphone-18-pro-models-could-feature-a-variable-aperture-camera-for-better-low-light-shots/">previous report</a> from South Korea’s ET News, this camera feature has the highest chance of making the cut for 2026.</p>

<p>According to the tipster, Apple is also testing a hole-punch solution for the front camera on the iPhone 18 Pro models. The company has been <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/19/apple-may-finally-ditch-the-dynamic-island-in-iphone-18-pro-series-with-under-display-face-id/">exploring</a> under-display solutions as well, and it will be interesting to see if the Face ID system finally sits under the display, leaving a smaller hole-punch cutout for the selfie — similar to what almost all Android phones use.</p>

<p>While the camera layout isn’t changing much — Apple is reportedly sticking with the horizontal “deco” — there could be a much bigger visual twist on the back. The tipster talked about a “transparent” back panel. It’s a sharp departure from the current design language of iPhones.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="633" height="280" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-18-Pro-leak-DCS.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-714401" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-18-Pro-leak-DCS.png 633w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-18-Pro-leak-DCS-300x133.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px" /></figure></div>

<p>Apple made some significant changes this year to its Pro iPhones — both in terms of design and functionality — and it will be interesting to see if the company is finally increasing its focus on innovation. Nonetheless, the iPhone 19 series (Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone) is also around the corner, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple reserves a few groundbreaking changes — like a hole-punch + UDC setup for the front or the transparent back design — for its 20th-anniversary models. More concrete information is expected as development progresses.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> is reportedly gearing up to make a major change to the iPhone’s display design in 2026. According to a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo by the reliable tipster Digital Chat Station, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/05/iphone-18-pro-under-display-face-id-redesign/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">move toward a cleaner screen experience</a> by hiding the Face ID system under the display, alongside a camera that sits behind the screen as well.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="256" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/iPhone-18-Pro-series-leak.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-693146" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/iPhone-18-Pro-series-leak.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/iPhone-18-Pro-series-leak-300x85.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/iPhone-18-Pro-series-leak-768x218.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/iPhone-18-Pro-series-leak-696x198.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure></div>

<p>The leak claims the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will feature 6.27-inch and 6.86-inch OLED panels, respectively. Both screens will have LTPO refresh rate tech and 1.5K resolution. </p>

<p>However, the bigger shift is Apple’s adoption of HIAA (Hole-in-Active-Area) technology, which removes part of the screen’s pixel layer to let sensors underneath see through the display.</p>

<h2><strong>It&#8217;s difficult to perfect</strong></h2>

<p>This approach isn’t new in the smartphone industry. Android makers like Samsung and ZTE have already experimented with under-display cameras. But Apple’s challenge goes beyond just hiding a selfie shooter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Its Face ID biometric tech relies on a suite of infrared components: a dot projector, a flood illuminator, and an IR camera. Most under-display tech is optimized for visible light, so adapting it for infrared use is not straightforward. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="796" height="532" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image.png?x44794" alt="iPhone 18 Pro series mockup" class="wp-image-685134" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image.png 796w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image-300x201.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image-768x513.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image-696x465.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image-628x420.png 628w" sizes="(max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px" /><figcaption>iPhone 18 Pro series mockup</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>According to the report, Apple has already built it and is testing working prototypes. So it seems that the company may have overcome some of these hardware limitations.</p>

<p>Apple’s long-term goal to completely remove the Dynamic Island has been in circulation since at least the iPhone 15 series, with similar speculation cropping up around the iPhone 16 and 17. </p>

<p>While the iPhone 17 Pro Max is still expected to ship with a smaller Dynamic Island, a fully uninterrupted screen won’t arrive until the iPhone 18 lineup, assuming development and production stay on track.</p>

<p>As always with early leaks, timelines can shift. But if the under-display Face ID and camera system makes it to next year’s Pro models, it would mark Apple’s first significant external design overhaul since the introduction of the Dynamic Island in the iPhone 14 Pro.</p>

<h3><strong>iPhone 18 Pro series to feature under-display technology</strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="796" height="532" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image.png?x44794" alt="iPhone 18 Pro series mockup" class="wp-image-685134" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image.png 796w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image-300x201.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image-768x513.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image-696x465.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/IPHone-18-Pro-face-id-image-628x420.png 628w" sizes="(max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px" /><figcaption>iPhone 18 Pro series mockup</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The redesign involves relocating the front-facing camera to a small punch-hole in the upper-left corner of the screen while embedding the Face ID components beneath the display. This change could eliminate the current Dynamic Island setup, though it&#8217;s still unclear whether Apple will completely abandon it or adapt it to the new layout.</p>

<p>Apple&#8217;s progression from the notch on the iPhone X to the pill-shaped cutout on the iPhone 14 Pro series aims to maximize screen real estate. The move to a single punch-hole brings the iPhone&#8217;s appearance closer to what’s common in the Android space, though Apple continues to stay committed to 3D face authentication instead of adopting under-display fingerprint sensors.</p>

<p>The report also reveals that Apple may <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/05/apple-iphone-18-launch-strategy-2026/">stagger the launch of the iPhone 18 series</a>, with the Pro models likely to debut the new under-display Face ID design in 2026. Alongside the Pro models, the brand may also announce the iPhone 18 Air and its foldable iPhone. In contrast, the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e might debut in spring 2027 with the existing “2+1 punch-hole” configuration.</p>

<p>According to the report, Apple will introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, a sleek iPhone 18 Air, and its first foldable iPhone during its usual fall event in 2026. The standard iPhone 18 and a budget-friendly iPhone 18e, a successor to the iPhone 16e, will follow in spring 2027.</p>

<p>This shift aims to ease production demands, particularly as Apple ramps up manufacturing in India to reduce reliance on China amid trade tensions. The staggered timeline could also streamline factory operations, requiring fewer workers for each cycle. The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to feature under-display Face ID, replacing the Dynamic Island with a single front camera cutout, while the Air model will emphasize a slim design.</p>

<p>Apple’s foldable iPhone, anticipated for 2026, promises a book-like design with a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner screen for enhanced multitasking. To tackle durability concerns, Apple is reportedly using a liquid metal hinge to minimize creasing. The device, potentially measuring 4.5mm when unfolded, may skip Face ID for a Touch ID power button sensor and feature a titanium chassis with a dual-camera system. Expected to be priced at around $2,000, it could be Apple’s priciest iPhone yet. Enhanced AI features and software optimizations will likely position it as a premium, AI-driven device, setting the stage for future foldable iPads or MacBooks.</p>
