<p>The standard iPhone is typically the default choice for most buyers, offering a balance of new features and approachability. However, if recent supply chain reports are accurate, the base iPhone 18 might represent a shift in how <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> handles its non-Pro lineup.</p>

<p>Between a rumored change in the release schedule and a few specific hardware compromises, the standard iPhone 18 is shaping up to be an interesting, if slightly segmented, device.</p>

<p>Here is a look at what the rumors currently suggest for the base <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/iphone-18/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 18</a>, and what it means for anyone planning to upgrade.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="640" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/iPhone-17-base-model-1024x640.png?x44794" alt="iPhone 17 base model" class="wp-image-737025" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/iPhone-17-base-model-1024x640.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/iPhone-17-base-model-300x188.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/iPhone-17-base-model-768x480.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/iPhone-17-base-model-696x435.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/iPhone-17-base-model-1068x668.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/iPhone-17-base-model-672x420.png 672w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/iPhone-17-base-model.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<h3><strong>Updated Launch Timeline</strong></h3>

<p>For years, consumers have expected a new lineup of iPhones every September. But Apple is reportedly adjusting its strategy for the iPhone 18 cycle. Instead of releasing all four models at once in the fall of 2026, the company is expected to focus its September event entirely on the higher-end devices: the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/iphone-18-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 18 Pro</a>, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/iphone-18-pro-max/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pro Max</a>, and a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/04/07/apples-first-foldable-could-be-called-iphone-ultra-says-tipster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rumored foldable model</a>.</p>

<p>If you are waiting for the standard iPhone 18 or the more affordable iPhone 18e, reports indicate you will need to wait until the spring of 2027. Industry analysts suggest this split is largely driven by supply chain costs, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/04/21/iphone-18-tipped-to-bring-downgrades-to-keep-costs-low/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">particularly the rising price of memory</a>. By spacing out the launches, Apple can prioritize its higher-margin Pro models first.</p>

<h3><strong>Shift in Display Priorities</strong></h3>

<p>The iPhone 18 is expected to keep the 6.3-inch display size and the 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate introduced with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-17/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 17</a>. However, the underlying technology might take a slight step back compared to the Pro models.</p>

<p>According to supply chain leaks, the base iPhone 18 will use <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/04/23/iphone-18-tipped-to-reuse-display-tech-from-iphone-14-series/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">M12+ OLED material</a>, which is an iterative version of the panel used in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-14-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 14 Pro</a>. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro models will move on to the newer M16 material.</p>

<p>The primary difference here isn&#8217;t necessarily how the screen looks, but rather how efficiently it operates. Older OLED panels require more power to achieve the same brightness levels. While the iPhone 18 will benefit from Apple’s highly efficient new 2nm A20 chip, some of those battery life improvements might be offset by the older display technology.</p>

<p>There are rumors that all three iPhone 18 models will feature a smaller Dynamic Island cutout. However, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/03/30/iphone-18-pro-leaked-screen-protectors-showcase-redesigned-dynamic-island/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conflicting reports</a> suggest it may be limited to the Pro models.</p>

<h3><strong>12GB RAM Standard Across All Models</strong></h3>

<p>Perhaps the best upgrade coming to the base iPhone 18 is its memory. Apple is reportedly standardizing 12GB of RAM across the entire iPhone 18 lineup, a notable increase from the 8GB found in previous base models.</p>

<p>The reasoning behind this is straightforward: on-device artificial intelligence. Apple Intelligence features, particularly the anticipated iOS 27 Siri upgrades powered by new language models, require significant memory to run smoothly without relying on cloud processing.</p>

<p>By giving the base iPhone 18 enough RAM to handle these tasks, Apple is ensuring the device will remain capable and responsive for years to come.</p>

<h3><strong>Cameras and Cost-Cutting Measures</strong></h3>

<p>On the camera front, the standard iPhone 18 is expected to retain a dual 48-megapixel rear setup (main and ultrawide), skipping the variable aperture lens rumored for the Pro models. However, the front-facing camera is slated for a welcome upgrade to 24MP, which should improve the clarity of selfies and video calls.</p>

<p>To keep production costs manageable, Apple might also simplify the Camera Control button. Current rumors suggest the company could remove the capacitive touch layer, relying solely on pressure sensors to register inputs.</p>

<p>It is a minor change that most users may not even notice, but it highlights Apple&#8217;s effort to maintain the phone&#8217;s expected $799 starting price amid rising component costs.</p>

<h3><strong>The Overall Picture</strong></h3>

<p>Apple is drawing a clearer line between its standard and Pro models. The base iPhone 18 seems designed to be a practical, capable device focused on delivering Apple&#8217;s latest software and AI features, rather than pushing the boundaries of hardware.</p>

<p>If you don&#8217;t mind waiting until the spring of 2027, the inclusion of 12GB of RAM and the new A20 chip should make it a reliable choice, even if it misses out on the most advanced display technology.</p>

<p>If a new report is anything to go by, the base iPhone 18 might actually take a step back in one key area. According to the latest supply chain chatter, Apple could use Samsung’s M12+ OLED material for the standard <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/04/21/iphone-18-tipped-to-bring-downgrades-to-keep-costs-low/">iPhone 18</a>. That’s basically a tweaked version of M12, which was used in devices like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-14-pro/">iPhone 14 Pro</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s23-ultra/">Galaxy S23 Ultra</a>. In other words, it’s not exactly cutting-edge anymore.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HFm2hPxWwAE7iuO-1-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-736029" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HFm2hPxWwAE7iuO-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HFm2hPxWwAE7iuO-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HFm2hPxWwAE7iuO-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HFm2hPxWwAE7iuO-1-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HFm2hPxWwAE7iuO-1-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HFm2hPxWwAE7iuO-1-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HFm2hPxWwAE7iuO-1.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Meanwhile, the Pro models are expected to move ahead with Samsung’s newer M16 material. That’s a noticeable gap. Especially when you consider that even current iPhones are already using more advanced panels than what’s now being rumored for the base iPhone 18.</p>

<p>This isn’t really about how the screen looks at first glance. The bigger difference with newer OLED materials tends to be efficiency — how much power the display needs to hit a certain brightness level. Newer panels are simply better at this. Older ones, not so much.</p>

<p>So the concern is pretty straightforward. The iPhone 18 is expected to run on Apple’s upcoming A20 chip, likely built on a 2nm process, which should improve power efficiency. But if the display is less efficient, some of those gains could get canceled out in everyday use. You might not see the battery improvements you’d expect just from the chip upgrade.</p>

<p>Of course, Apple could balance things out with a larger battery. That’s always an option. But then again, that’s more of a workaround than a real fix.</p>

<p>If this turns out to be accurate, it does raise a question: how far is Apple willing to push the gap between the standard and Pro models?</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a> might be rethinking how it handles its base iPhone next time around. A new leak suggests the standard iPhone 18 could arrive with a few compromises to keep costs under control.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7-1024x768.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-735656" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7-1068x801.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7-560x420.jpg 560w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/HGaR6NZaoAIG_J7.jpg 1919w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The regular iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e may not show up until spring 2027. Instead, Apple is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/05/apple-iphone-18-launch-strategy-2026/">expected</a> to use its usual September event to focus on the higher-end models, likely the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/02/11/iphone-18-pro-pricing-leak-stands-out-amid-memory-price-surge/">iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max</a>, and maybe even a foldable or <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/04/07/apples-first-foldable-could-be-called-iphone-ultra-says-tipster/">“Ultra” variant</a> if those plans hold. If that happens, it would be the first time in a while that Apple splits its iPhone launch this way.</p>

<p>The reasoning comes down to costs. Memory prices have been climbing due to the ongoing DRAM situation, and Apple is reportedly looking at ways to offset that. According to tipster Fixed Focus Digital, one approach seems to be bringing the standard iPhone closer to the “e” model in terms of hardware and production.</p>

<p>Exactly what gets cut isn’t fully clear yet, but a few possibilities have been mentioned. For context, the current iPhone 17 stands out from the 17e with things like a 120Hz OLED panel, an extra ultra-wide camera, and Dynamic Island.</p>

<p>Going back to 60Hz doesn’t sound likely, but some of the newer additions could be on the chopping block. That might include the dedicated camera button, a slightly toned-down chipset (with fewer GPU cores), the upgraded front camera, and faster wireless charging.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="424" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot_20260421_195930-1024x424.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-735654" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot_20260421_195930-1024x424.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot_20260421_195930-300x124.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot_20260421_195930-768x318.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot_20260421_195930-696x288.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot_20260421_195930-1068x442.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot_20260421_195930-1015x420.jpg 1015w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Screenshot_20260421_195930.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>None of this is confirmed, of course. Apple’s plans tend to shift quite a bit before launch, and early leaks don’t always land exactly right. Still, the overall direction is interesting. It looks like Apple could be trying to draw a clearer line between its standard and Pro models. Whether that ends up feeling like a smart trade-off or a step back will depend on how much actually gets cut.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple’s</a> upcoming iPhone 18 lineup has reportedly entered the early prototyping stage, offering a preliminary look at how Apple may refine its display design across future models. The information, shared by Digital Chat Station, suggests changes that focus on on-screen layout and differentiation rather than a complete visual overhaul.</p>

<h3><strong>iPhone 18 series display details emerge</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="828" height="290" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-84.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-723391" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-84.png 828w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-84-300x105.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-84-768x269.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-84-696x244.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px" /></figure>

<p>According to DCS, all iPhone 18 models are currently being sampled internally. The standard iPhone 18 is said to feature a 6.27-inch LTPO OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and the existing Dynamic Island design. Alongside it, the iPhone Air 2 is tipped to arrive with a 6.55-inch LTPO 120Hz screen, continuing Apple’s push towards a thinner and lighter form factor while retaining a familiar front layout.</p>

<p>The biggest display shift is expected on the Pro models. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are reportedly testing 6.27-inch and 6.86-inch LTPO 120Hz panels respectively.</p>

<p>These screens are said to move part of the Face ID system beneath the display, leaving only a small punch-hole for the front camera. As a result, the Dynamic Island area is expected to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/18/iphone-18-pro-could-get-a-major-front-redesign-with-unconventional-hole-punch-camera-placement/">shrink for the first time</a> since it debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro series.</p>

<p>According to reports<strong>,</strong> Apple may change its traditional launch rhythm. Instead of unveiling the entire lineup together in autumn, the company could introduce its high-end models first. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and a foldable iPhone are expected to arrive in late 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 and a possible iPhone 18e may follow in spring 2027. There’s no specific launch timeframe for the iPhone Air 2.</p>

<p>On the hardware front, the Pro models are tipped to debut the A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process. Camera upgrades, including a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/11/07/new-iphone-18-pro-leak-backs-up-earlier-reports-on-variable-aperture-transparent-back/">variable aperture system</a> and improved image sensors, are also being tested. Together, these developments suggest Apple is preparing a more distinct split between standard and Pro iPhones in the iPhone 18 generation.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a> is about to become <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a>’s go-to memory supplier again, and yes, the ongoing memory shortage is to blame here. </p>

<p>According to a report from South Korea, Apple is reportedly placing a massive order for Samsung memory chips for the iPhone 18 series because Apple’s current suppliers (SK Hynix and Micron) are focusing more on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) production used in data centers rather than the LPDDR memory it uses for iPhones. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="590" height="403" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/ipHone-17e-front.jpg?x44794" alt="iPhone 17e render" class="wp-image-717294" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/ipHone-17e-front.jpg 590w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/ipHone-17e-front-300x205.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/ipHone-17e-front-218x150.jpg 218w" sizes="(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px" /></figure></div>

<p>If you are unaware, high-bandwidth memory is in huge demand thanks to AI accelerators from companies like NVIDIA. And it’s not just demand, but these AI companies are also paying extra to secure the deal of HBMs to be used in their data centers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As a result, memory makers are shifting production away from low-power LPDDR memory and toward HBM that goes into servers. And that shift is now squeezing Apple and every other smartphone maker, for that matter.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Samsung to the rescue</strong></h2>

<p>That leaves Samsung as Apple’s most reliable option. According to the report, Samsung is expected to secure around 60 to 70 percent of Apple’s memory chip orders for the iPhone 18 lineup.</p>

<p>Apple ships roughly 230 million iPhones every year and demands both price stability and guaranteed supply at scale. With SK Hynix and Micron prioritizing higher-margin AI memory, Samsung is now the only supplier with the capacity and willingness to meet those requirements.</p>

<p>There’s also a hint of déjà vu here. More than a decade ago, during Apple and Samsung’s high-profile patent battles, Apple deliberately reduced its dependence on Samsung and shifted more memory orders to SK Hynix. Now, with market dynamics flipped, Samsung is once again emerging as Apple’s go-to partner.</p>

<p>That doesn’t mean Samsung will handle everything. Around 30 to 40 percent of Apple’s memory orders are still expected to be split between SK Hynix and Micron, allowing Apple to maintain its long-standing multi-supplier strategy.</p>

<p>According to a report from Korea’s The Bell, the upcoming iPhone 18 will receive a 50% memory upgrade—jumping from 8GB to 12GB of RAM. That puts it on par with the higher-end models, which already made the leap to 12GB with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/10/21/not-only-samsung-slim-form-factor-disappoints-apple-too/">iPhone 17 lineup</a>. The move appears to be driven by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a>’s growing focus on Apple Intelligence, which relies heavily on local processing to ensure user privately.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-21.27.45-1-1024x683.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-712569" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-21.27.45-1-1024x683.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-21.27.45-1-300x200.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-21.27.45-1-768x512.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-21.27.45-1-1536x1024.webp 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-21.27.45-1-696x464.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-21.27.45-1-1068x712.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-21.27.45-1-630x420.webp 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-21.27.45-1.webp 1872w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Samsung is reportedly supplying Apple with next-generation LPDDR5X RAM modules, while SK Hynix and Micron are expected to help meet demand. These new chips are faster and more power-efficient than the LPDDR5 of the iPhone 17.</p>

<p>The iPhone 18 family will reportedly debut in two phases. The iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air 2, and Apple’s first foldable iPhone are said to be planned for fall 2026, powered by the upcoming 2nm A20 chip. The standard iPhone 18 and a rumored iPhone 18e could follow in early 2027.</p>

<p>The jump to 12GB may sound incremental, but it’s a meaningful upgrade for Apple’s AI strategy. With more (and likely more complex) Apple Intelligence features expected to debut on the next-gen iPhones, the added memory should help handle demanding tasks smoothly while keeping other activities uninterrupted.</p>

<p>However, higher specs could come at a price. With TSMC’s 2nm chip production <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/10/23/upcoming-flagships-using-tsmcs-2nm-chips-could-see-notable-price-hikes/">expected to raise costs</a>, analysts predict that base prices could climb by $50–$100 over the iPhone 17 lineup. Even so, many Apple fans on X (formerly Twitter) seem more excited than concerned, seeing the RAM boost as a long-overdue step toward keeping pace with Android rivals like Samsung’s Galaxy S26 and Vivo’s X300 series.</p>

<p>It hasn’t even been a full week since the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/09/13/who-should-buy-the-iphone-17-pro-max/">iPhone 17 lineup</a> went on sale, and leaks about <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a>’s next flagship are already surfacing. According to a new report from Chinese leaker Setsuna Digital, the iPhone 18 series, due in 2026, could see a smaller Dynamic Island but may still miss out on one of the most anticipated design upgrades.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="641" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-18-Smaller-Dynamic-Island-1024x641.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-706691" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-18-Smaller-Dynamic-Island-1024x641.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-18-Smaller-Dynamic-Island-300x188.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-18-Smaller-Dynamic-Island-768x481.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-18-Smaller-Dynamic-Island-696x436.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-18-Smaller-Dynamic-Island-1068x668.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-18-Smaller-Dynamic-Island-671x420.jpg 671w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/iPhone-18-Smaller-Dynamic-Island.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The leak claims that Apple is working to shrink the Dynamic Island cutout, which currently houses Face ID sensors and the front camera. Instead of eliminating it altogether, Apple may be preparing a more compact version. That would mean no under-display Face ID or camera just yet, despite long-running <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/19/apple-may-finally-ditch-the-dynamic-island-in-iphone-18-pro-series-with-under-display-face-id/">rumors</a> pointing in that direction.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="636" height="494" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Setsuna-Digial-weibo-iphone-18-rumor.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-706690" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Setsuna-Digial-weibo-iphone-18-rumor.jpg 636w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Setsuna-Digial-weibo-iphone-18-rumor-300x233.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Setsuna-Digial-weibo-iphone-18-rumor-541x420.jpg 541w" sizes="(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px" /></figure>

<p>This lines up with chatter about Apple’s 2026 plans, which could bring other changes to the lineup, and even Apple’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/09/03/apple-foldable-iphone-2026-foldable-ipad-2028/">first foldable device</a>. But under-display technology may not arrive until the iPhone 19 or perhaps a special <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/15/apples-20th-anniversary-iphone-to-bring-wild-upgrades-no-bezels-no-cutout-and-a-100-silicon-battery/">anniversary edition in 2027</a>.</p>

<p>Setsuna Digital does have some credibility, having leaked the iPhone 17’s vapor chamber cooling system correctly, though their track record isn’t flawless. As always, these kinds of early leaks should be taken with a dose of skepticism.</p>

<p>If accurate, the iPhone 18 will represent more of a refinement than a redesign. Apple seems to be taking its time on the transition to a truly all-screen iPhone, while rivals like Samsung continue to push harder into foldables. For now, the smaller Dynamic Island looks like the next step in Apple’s slow march toward a cleaner front display.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a> is still weeks away from introducing the iPhone 17 series, but reports from Korea suggest the company is already planning a major change for the iPhone 18 lineup in 2026. According to ET News, Apple could split its launch into two separate events, marking a big shift from the yearly all-in-one keynote we’ve seen for over a decade.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Apple_keynote_event_tim-cook-opens-september-keynote_091019.jpg.landing-big_2x-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-702036" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Apple_keynote_event_tim-cook-opens-september-keynote_091019.jpg.landing-big_2x-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Apple_keynote_event_tim-cook-opens-september-keynote_091019.jpg.landing-big_2x-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Apple_keynote_event_tim-cook-opens-september-keynote_091019.jpg.landing-big_2x-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Apple_keynote_event_tim-cook-opens-september-keynote_091019.jpg.landing-big_2x-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Apple_keynote_event_tim-cook-opens-september-keynote_091019.jpg.landing-big_2x-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Apple_keynote_event_tim-cook-opens-september-keynote_091019.jpg.landing-big_2x-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Apple_keynote_event_tim-cook-opens-september-keynote_091019.jpg.landing-big_2x.jpg 1312w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h2>Two stages for the iPhone 18 series</h2>

<p>If the <a href="https://www.etnews.com/20250813000323">report</a> holds true, September 2026 would see the debut of the iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and—perhaps most notably—a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/18/everything-we-know-about-apples-first-foldable/">foldable iPhone</a>, Apple’s first entry into the growing foldable category. Then, in early 2027, Apple would return with a second event to unveil the standard iPhone 18 alongside the iPhone 18e.</p>

<p>The same staggered schedule is said to continue with the iPhone 19 series: the premium models, including the foldable, would be shown in September 2027, while the vanilla and budget editions would follow in the first half of 2028.</p>

<h2>Why Apple might do this</h2>

<p>Splitting the launches could allow Apple to highlight its most advanced devices first, appealing to early adopters and premium buyers, while giving the mainstream and entry-level models their own spotlight later. It could also help Apple better manage production timelines—particularly with the foldable iPhone.</p>

<p>Apple is set to announce the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/14/apple-iphone-17-trial-production-india/">iPhone 17 series</a> on September 9 but the reported change for the iPhone 18 shows the company is thinking further ahead. If true, the move could mark the beginning of a new era in how Apple positions and markets its iPhones.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> is giving the iPhone lineup its biggest design makeover in years. The upcoming iPhone 17 series, especially the Pro models, is expected to feature a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/02/14/iphone-17-pro-3d-renders-show-a-design-more-like-budget-poco-phones/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wider rear camera bump</a> that stretches farther across the back of the phone.</p>

<p>The camera lenses will still be aligned on the left, but the LED flash, microphone, and LiDAR sensor could move to the right. There’s also some debate about whether the phones will have a dual-tone design on the back. Some leaks claim<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/04/21/apple-iphone-17-pro-case-leak-camera-bar-design/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> it&#8217;s happening</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/04/07/iphone-17-pros-two-tone-design-may-not-happen-after-all/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">others say it&#8217;s not</a>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/iPhone-17-Pro-renders-1024x536.jpg?x44794" alt="" /><figcaption>iPhone 17 Pro camera module</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>But this isn’t just a one-off redesign. After several years of playing it safe, Apple appears to be shifting gears starting in 2025.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a fresh leak out of China, the company is planning major design changes <em>every year</em> for at least the next three iPhone generations.</p>

<h2><strong>Punch-holes, under-display sensors, and the road to iPhone 19</strong></h2>

<p>Well-known tipster Digital Chat Station reaffirms reports of a camera module redesign in 2025 iPhones in their latest leak. Then, in 2026, Apple is reportedly turning its attention to the front of the phone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The leak claims the iPhone 18 series will ditch the familiar pill-shaped module for the front camera and Face ID. It will be replaced by a cleaner punch-hole cutout for just the selfie camera.</p>

<p>And where does Face ID go? According to the leak, Apple’s long-rumored under-display Face ID tech could make its debut here, moving the entire system under the screen.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="334" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Apple-iPhone-19-under-display-camera.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-688557" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Apple-iPhone-19-under-display-camera.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Apple-iPhone-19-under-display-camera-300x111.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Apple-iPhone-19-under-display-camera-768x285.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Apple-iPhone-19-under-display-camera-696x258.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure></div>

<p>If that wasn’t ambitious enough, a bigger change might come in 2027. The iPhone 19 series is said to be Apple’s first true full-screen iPhone with no notch, no cutout. This means both the Face ID sensors and the selfie camera would sit under the display.</p>

<p>Rumors of a<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/05/iphone-18-pro-under-display-face-id-redesign/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> notchless iPhone</a> have been around for a while, but this is the first time we’re hearing a clearer timeline. Of course, pulling off back-to-back design overhauls isn’t easy, even for Apple.</p>

<p>Under-display cameras still have a long way to go. Android brands like RedMagic have been experimenting with the tech for years, but image quality has yet to match what a traditional camera can do. So if Apple ships it in the iPhone 19, it’s possible there will still be trade-offs.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple</a> will unveil its iPhone 17 series this September, but attention is already turning to 2026&#8217;s lineup.&nbsp;A significant change is coming to Apple’s iPhone release schedule, according to <em>The Information</em>. The publication reports that Apple plans to stagger the iPhone 18 lineup launches in 2026 and 2027, breaking from its traditional all-at-once September unveilings.</p>

<h3><strong>New release timeline for iPhone 18 series</strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/iPhone-17-Pro-renders-1024x536.jpg?x44794" alt="iPhone-17-Pro-renders" class="wp-image-673190" width="1024" height="536" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/iPhone-17-Pro-renders-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/iPhone-17-Pro-renders-300x157.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/iPhone-17-Pro-renders-768x402.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/iPhone-17-Pro-renders-696x364.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/iPhone-17-Pro-renders-1068x559.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/iPhone-17-Pro-renders-803x420.jpg 803w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/iPhone-17-Pro-renders.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>iPhone 17 Pro renders by FPT</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>According to the report, Apple will introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, a sleek iPhone 18 Air, and its first foldable iPhone during its usual fall event in 2026. The standard iPhone 18 and a budget-friendly iPhone 18e, a successor to the iPhone 16e, will follow in spring 2027.</p>

<p>This shift aims to ease production demands, particularly as Apple ramps up manufacturing in India to reduce reliance on China amid trade tensions. The staggered timeline could also streamline factory operations, requiring fewer workers for each cycle. The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to feature under-display Face ID, replacing the Dynamic Island with a single front camera cutout, while the Air model will emphasize a slim design.</p>

<p>Apple’s foldable iPhone, anticipated for 2026, promises a book-like design with a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner screen for enhanced multitasking. To tackle durability concerns, Apple is reportedly using a liquid metal hinge to minimize creasing. The device, potentially measuring 4.5mm when unfolded, may skip Face ID for a Touch ID power button sensor and feature a titanium chassis with a dual-camera system. Expected to be priced at around $2,000, it could be Apple’s priciest iPhone yet. Enhanced AI features and software optimizations will likely position it as a premium, AI-driven device, setting the stage for future foldable iPads or MacBooks.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple </a>might be planning something big for its future iPhones. A fresh rumor has hinted at the brand&#8217;s next gen iPhones 18 series getting a leap in performance thanks to advancements in the proprietary chips. However, this improvement in power could be coming at a cost.</p>

<h2>Apple iPhone 18 getting more expensive over better performance </h2>

<p>According to a known tipster <em><a href="https://weibo.com/6048569942/PnFnbnHSO" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digital Chat Station</a></em>, the Cupertino based giant is planning on upgrading the performance of its chips for the iPhone 18 series by adopting TSMC&#8217;s new 2nm process. These chipsets will bring more power but could lead to the iPhone 18 series getting more expensive. The rise in cost is apparently due to rising manufacturing costs of the cutting edge chips based on the new process.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-3.png?x44794" alt="iPhone 16 Pro Max" class="wp-image-679924" width="757" height="574" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-3.png 855w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-3-300x227.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-3-768x582.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-3-696x527.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-3-554x420.png 554w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/image-3-80x60.png 80w" sizes="(max-width: 757px) 100vw, 757px" /><figcaption>Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The iPhone 18 lineup may get a noticeable hike in price compared to the current gen iPhones or even the upcoming iPhone 17 series as well. This price rise could be attributed to TSMC&#8217;s new process, since these will have a limited units owing to yield issues. So, it is likely that Apple would have this chip be exclusive to the higher end iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. </p>

<p>The report from DCS claims that the limitation in production is based on early production numbers (Via <em><a href="https://www.phonearena.com/news/apple-upgrade-iphone-18-prices-up_id169583" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PhoneArena</a></em>). While the tipster claimed that prices may rise, we didn&#8217;t get an exact figure. However, with the components cost growing and the tariff situation, the cost could be significantly higher. Based on our previous report, the Apple iPhone 18 Pro could be the first iPhone to feature a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/11/09/iphone-18-pro-variable-aperture-camera/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">variable aperture camera</a>, along with other camera innovations. </p>
