Apple has quietly released a new software update for its 13-year-old iPhones. The iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, released in 2013 and 2014, respectively, are receiving iOS 12.5.8 in 2026, more than a decade after they first went on sale.

By smartphone standards, that’s an exceptionally long lifespan. The iPhone 5s is now roughly 13 years old, while the iPhone 6 is about 12. Most phones from that era haven’t just stopped getting updates; many stopped functioning properly years ago due to expired services, broken apps, or outdated security components. Apple, at least for now, is keeping these devices operational.

What iOS 12.5.8 actually does

According to Apple’s changelog, iOS 12.5.8 mainly updates internal security certificates. These certificates are essential for basic system functions, including device activation and Apple’s core services like iMessage and FaceTime.

If users don’t install this update, those certificates will expire in January 2027. Once that happens, affected devices could face what is essentially functional paralysis. Users may be unable to activate the phone, send iMessages, or place FaceTime video calls. In other words, the phone might still turn on, but many of its core features would quietly stop working.

This makes the update less optional than it might appear at first glance. It’s not about performance improvements or bug fixes; it’s about preventing the phone from slowly becoming unusable.

The previous update for both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 arrived back in January 2023, and that one also focused on security fixes. Since then, these phones have largely been left alone, which is typical for hardware this old.

The iPhone 6s is included too

Apple didn’t stop with the 5s and 6. The iPhone 6s, released in 2015, also received an update simultaneously. The device is getting iOS 15.8.6, which includes the same type of certificate extensions.

Why this matters, even if you don’t own these phones

Very few people are using an iPhone 5s or iPhone 6 as their primary device in 2026. But Apple’s decision still says something about how the company views long-term device support.

Many older smartphones fail not because the hardware stops working, but because essential services quietly break. Certificates expire. Secure connections fail. App servers stop recognizing the device as valid. At that point, even a perfectly functioning phone becomes frustrating or useless.

By pushing out updates like iOS 12.5.8, Apple is preventing that slow decay, at least for a little longer.

These updates are for users who cannot update to the latest version. Users should install these updates as soon as possible because they address known security issues that may put users at risk.

As cellphone features continue to become more advanced today, cellphones that can handle all kinds of tasks have already become an integral part of our lives. You can see people either checking out their Facebook or Twitter, or reading the news on their phones. As cellphone features become more powerful, they end up consuming more power. Same goes for screen sizes. The larger the screen, the more power is consumed. As a result, today, battery life has become a very important issue to consider when producing smartphones.

In this article, we analyze and compare the battery life of several cellphones such as the Huawei Mate 7, Nokia Lumia 830, Meizu MX4, the Xiaomi Mi4, OnePlus One, IUNI U3, Sony Z1, and the iPhone 5S.

First, I will explain the testing procedure. All the cellphones start out fully charged. With the screen brightness at maximum, the phone in silent, and WiFi connection turned on, the phones undergo these tests: 30-minute video streaming, playing 30-minute videos that were already in the phone (1080p H.264 AAC MP4, 11304kbps), 30-minute gaming, and 30-minute phone calls. Here are the results:

First of all, as you can see from the table, most of the Android phones have at least 3000mAh. Those with the highest battery supply obviously have the advantage. A good example of this is the Huawei Mate 7 which consumed the least amount of power. If regularly used with moderation, you can use it for two days and one night.

Second to the Mate 7 is the OnePlus One which has a battery supply of 3100mAh but with only 40% of its power consumed. This is very impressive.

The difference between the other phones is not too great. They can last for a day and one night. The one that consumes the most power is the IUNI U3 which has a 2K display screen. Despite the fact that it has similar specifications to the Xiaomi Mi4 and OnePlus One, up to 52% of its power was consumed in the tests, making it hard to use for a day.

According to the data, phone calls consume a lot of paper. Also, playing games on the phone consume more power than in actual video game consoles. One reason is definitely due to the upgrades done with the phone’s hardware and software.

Based on these results, we have no choice but continue to charge our phones everyday until battery technology has become much more advanced. However, the development of rapid charging technology has given us hope.

China Mobile, one of the largest mobile operator in China, has just released its financial statements. Through those statements in mind that the company suffered a loss for the first of annual profit since 14 years ago.

One of the causes of the loss was due to investment in 4G infrastructure. This infrastructure is intended to support the development of mobile technology in the future. But unfortunately, the infrastructure is currently only used by approximately 1.34 million units of smartphones.

Apple has officially introduced its newest flagship smartphone, iPhone 5S. This phone brings news update, iincluding more advanced camera capabilities. Although still carrying the 8 megapixel camera, the camera sensor is 15% larger than predecessor. The larger size means the new iPhone 5S camera can produce clearer photos in low light conditions.

In addition, the camera is covered with a 5 element lens with f/2.2 aperture. iPhone 5S in the lens aperture larger than the iPhone 5, which has f/2.4. A pixel size of 1.5 microns is also enlarged so as to capture more light. In other words, the iPhone 5S has increased 33% in terms of light sensitivity.

New iSight camera on the iPhone 5S is built based on the iPhone 5 camera that produces a noticeable difference to your photos. Camera captures beautiful images at 8 megapixel. What makes it beautiful is the redesign of the camera sensor allows more larger pixel size. Comparable with large pixel pictures better. And the photos is actually better to inspire us to make a new iSight camera in the iPhone 5S.

Most smartphones, Apple’s iPhone included, are known for having a notoriously bad flash that washes out pictures, but that is no longer the case with the iPhone 5s. A report from China suggested that Foxconn is conducting a massive recruitment in their factory located in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. The new workers were recruited to start the assembly line required for mass production of what they call the Apple iPhone 6. The reporter even claimed that Foxconn has started assembly of the smartphone.

In 2012, Foxconn has 300 thousand workers in Zhengzhou, has now dropped to 210 thousand. The figure usually starts to grow in these months every year, to produce a new iPhone.

A rumor circulating on the plan back Apple released the iPhone 5S. According to recent reports, Apple is likely to announce the appearance of the iPhone 5S on June 20th and will be released a few weeks later in early July.

A latest news reports that A7 processors for Apple smartphone mobile and tablets is starting to be produced. Production of experiments was conducted by one of the largest Taiwanese chip manufacturer, TSMC.

Apple A7 chip will be made using TSMC 20nm technology. TSMC chip production will be ready for mass-produced for Apple gadget in the first quarter of 2014.
