Apple’s ultra-thin iPhone Air was already designed to stand out, but one modder has taken it in a completely different direction, by making the back transparent and adding something Apple deliberately left out: a physical SIM slot.

The project was documented by YouTuber Linzin Tech. In a 22-minute video, he walks through the process of turning the standard iPhone Air into a clear-backed, SIM-enabled custom build.

The first step involved removing the opaque coating from the rear glass panel. Using a laser process, the modders carefully stripped away the paint layer without damaging key components underneath, particularly the MagSafe coil, which sits just beneath the glass.

Once the coating was removed, the result was a fully transparent back, revealing the battery, logic board layout, shielding, and internal connectors. The Apple logo remains visible, but now it floats above exposed hardware rather than a solid color finish.

Adding what Apple removed

The bigger challenge came next: installing a nano-SIM tray into a phone designed to rely entirely on eSIM.

To make room, the team milled a cutout into the bottom frame of the device. That modification required removing the original Taptic Engine, Apple’s large and finely tuned haptic motor, because there simply wasn’t enough internal space to accommodate both it and a SIM tray.

In its place, a smaller third-party vibration motor was installed. The SIM reader itself was wired in through board-level microsoldering, and according to the video, the modified phone successfully connects to mobile networks using a physical SIM card. It’s a significant hardware alteration, especially considering how tightly packed ultra-thin smartphones are.

As impressive as the mod looks, it wasn’t without consequences. Removing thermal pads during the laser process reportedly affected heat dissipation, leading to faster throttling under sustained load. The structural modifications also eliminated the phone’s IP68 water and dust resistance. And, of course, any warranty coverage was gone the moment the frame was cut open.

For most users, the trade-offs wouldn’t make sense. But for hardware enthusiasts, it’s a fascinating reminder that even the most closed-off designs can still be opened up.

Apple’s official Tmall flagship and JD.com store recently launched a promotion that cut the Air’s 256GB model price by 2,000 yuan. With China’s national subsidy applied, the phone’s price dropped to as low as 5,499 yuan (~ $790). 

That’s a 2,500-yuan reduction from its original launch price of 7,999 yuan, or more than 30% off. For a newly released iPhone, such a level of discount is quite unusual.

The aggressive price cut is unsurprisingly a response to weaker-than-expected sales of the slim model globally.

According to data from international research firm IDC, iPhone Air sales reached only around one-third of Apple’s highest expectations in the weeks following launch. Not long after, Apple reportedly reduced its production of the model by half. 

iPhone Air price drops bring back sales momentum

But the price drop seems to have changed the story. On JD.com, the 256GB iPhone Air is now listed as sold out, with the page showing the status as “being procured.” Delivery timelines have also been pushed back to February. 

Apple’s official Tmall store, meanwhile, still lists the device as available, with delivery estimated within six days.

Part of the appeal is the iPhone Air’s design. The device focuses on being thin and light, measuring just 5.6mm thick and weighing 165 grams. It runs on Apple’s A19 Pro chip and features a 120Hz high-refresh-rate display. The phone uses a single 48MP rear camera and packs a 3,149mAh battery.

That hardware mix has also been a point of criticism. Analysts have noted that the iPhone Air was originally priced too close to the iPhone Pro lineup while offering fewer features, including a single camera, single speaker, smaller battery, and eSIM-only support. At full price, those trade-offs were hard to ignore.

At the new lower price, though, the compromises do feel easier to accept.

Huawei’s entry into this space, the Mate 70 Air, is perhaps the most interesting of all. The company didn’t pursue extreme thinness at the expense of key features. Instead, it chose to make the device slim—yes—but still retain the essentials you’d expect from a premium 2025 phone.

Apple and Samsung, however, seem to be taking the opposite approach. There are noticeable compromises made in pursuit of slimmer designs. Here’s how the three phones compare, and how the Huawei Mate 70 Air differs from the iPhone Air and Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge.

Size and design

The Mate 70 Air is noticeably larger than both of its rivals. It measures 165 × 81.5 × 6.6 mm and weighs 208 g. While Huawei is chasing the ultra-light smartphone trend, it’s also being thoughtful about the features we’d expect from a 2025 phone. More on that later.

The iPhone Air leans the opposite way. It’s all about being thin. At just 5.6 mm thick and 165 g, it’s the slimmest and lightest of the three. 

The Galaxy S25 Edge sits in the middle. It measures 158.2 x 75.6 x 5.8 mm and weighs 163 g. It’s almost as thin as the iPhone Air but packs a slightly larger footprint. 

All three phones are well built. Huawei doesn’t mention exotic materials but does bring IP68/IP69 durability, which allows survival against high-pressure water streams. Apple also offers IP68, though with deeper submersion ratings (up to 6 m). Samsung matches Huawei with IP68, but only up to 1.5 m. Huawei is the most rugged on paper.

Displays

The differences continue in the screen department.

Huawei makes the Mate 70 Air feel almost tablet-adjacent with a 7.0-inch LTPO OLED panel. It refreshes at 120Hz, peaks at 4000 nits, and is protected by Kunlun Glass. 

Apple keeps it calmer with a 6.5-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display. It’s sharp at 1260 × 2736, and it offers features like HDR10, Dolby Vision, and a 120Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness reaches 3000 nits, making it excellent outdoors, though it dims slightly versus Huawei in numbers.

Samsung pushes clarity harder. The Galaxy S25 Edge screen is 6.7 inches, running at 1440 × 3120 for the highest pixel density of the three. It’s also LTPO and 120Hz with HDR10+ support.

All are great screens, but Huawei’s size stands out the most.

Software and ecosystem

The Mate 70 Air runs HarmonyOS 5.1. That’s an entirely different world from iOS and Android. It offers a familiar layout, but app availability and restrictions vary depending on your region. The phone also has satellite messaging support. 

The iPhone Air doesn’t surprise. It ships with iOS 26, and Apple promises long-term support, clean UI, and tight hardware-software integration. It works seamlessly with other Apple products.

Samsung goes with Android 15, One UI 7, and promises 7 major OS upgrades. That’s longer than most Android phones typically receive and helps it match Apple’s longevity promise.

If you’re already inside a particular ecosystem, none of these phones gives you a reason to switch. Huawei’s software feels the most different; Apple’s is the most familiar; Samsung’s is the most flexible.

Performance

This is where the biggest differences emerge.

Huawei uses its 7nm Kirin 9020 chips (9020A or 9020B). Performance should be fine for everyday tasks, but they can’t match the raw compute power of Apple’s 3nm A19 Pro or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite in Samsung’s phone.

Apple’s A19 Pro sits near the top of mobile performance, especially in power efficiency. Samsung’s Snapdragon 8 Elite pushes high clock speeds and serious GPU strength, especially for gaming and editing.

This might be the biggest practical difference. Huawei claims all-day endurance, while Apple and Samsung feel almost midrange on battery capacity, though software optimization may help them compete.

But if you want raw capacity, there’s no competition.

Extras

Two small notes:

• Huawei supports a stylus, something neither competitor offers here.
• Samsung includes DeX desktop mode, which lets you use the phone like a computer.
• Apple has satellite emergency features globally; Huawei’s satellite messaging is China-only.

These might not sway buyers, but they define the phones’ different priorities.

The Huawei Mate 70 Air, iPhone Air, and Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge sit in a similar price tier, but they don’t do the same job.

Tom’s Guide reported similar findings. In their web browsing loop, the Air managed 12 hours and 2 minutes versus the S25 Edge’s 11 hours and 48 minutes. Video streaming painted an even clearer picture: after five hours, the iPhone Air still had 81% battery left, while Samsung’s phone dropped to 67%. That kind of gap shows Apple isn’t just relying on hardware, but on tight software optimization too.

In fact, Apple was previously rumored to be working on an AI-powered resource management system for better efficiency and extended battery life, which now seems to be a part of the new iPhones. The iPhone 17 Pro Max lasted 11 hours and 53 minutes in XEETECHCARE’s test, while the Galaxy S25 Ultra only managed 9 hours and 18 minutes. The iPhone 17 Pro (3,988 mAh) even outperformed last year’s 16 Pro Max (4,685 mAh) in another test, suggesting Apple has done something really smart in resource management this year — whether that’s AI or other optimizations. And with leaks pointing to Samsung not upgrading the battery capacity of its 2026 Ultra flagship, it’ll be interesting to see how that model stacks up against the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

For now, the iPhone Air proves you don’t need the biggest battery to get strong endurance. Meaning you miss out on the impressively thin, light, and premium feel of this model if you slap on a case.

Scratches vs Form: What’s the Trade Off?

Sure, a case can protect against scratches or dents, but it’s worth asking: what do you lose in the process? The iPhone Air was clearly designed with hand feel in mind. Apple’s thinnest iPhone, the iPhone Air, has just faced one of the harshest durability trials—JerryRigEverything’s infamous bend test. At only 5.6mm thick, many feared the ultra-slim design would revive memories of the iPhone 6 Plus “Bendgate” saga. But thanks to its titanium middle frame, the slimmest iPhone held up impressively—at least until JerryRigEverything pushed it to the limit. In his latest durability test, the iPhone Air went through an unusual round of torture, and the result might surprise you.

The durability run began with scratches. Apple’s new Ceramic Shield 2 glass held up impressively, resisting marks until level 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. That’s a step above most phones, including Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra with Gorilla Armor 2, which showed scratches at level 6. Nelson even joked, “Apple ruined my line,” since his go-to scratch commentary didn’t quite apply here.

However, not every claim lived up to expectations. Apple’s much-touted anti-reflective coating didn’t perform as well as promised. Under bright lighting, it showed more glare than Samsung’s older Galaxy S24 Ultra, leaving a small dent in Apple’s otherwise strong display performance.

Then came the big moment—the bend test. Apple has been promoting the Air’s grade 5 titanium frame as being twice as rigid and 60% more elastic than aluminum. When Nelson applied pressure from the back, the frame barely budged. Bending it from the front produced some flex, but the phone quickly returned to shape without permanent damage.

Of course, Nelson pushed things further. Using a crane scale, he applied up to 216 pounds (about 98kg) of force, which finally cracked the front glass and bent the frame beyond recovery. Even then, the back glass didn’t shatter, and the phone remained operational.

The iPhone Air has proven that being thin doesn’t have to mean fragile. With a titanium frame and stronger Ceramic Shield 2 glass, it easily shrugs off normal daily abuse and puts fears of a “Bendgate 2.0” to rest. The only real disappointment is the anti-reflective coating, which doesn’t live up to Apple’s marketing. Still, durability-wise, the iPhone Air stands as one of the toughest devices in Apple’s 2025 lineup.

The “all-day battery” promised by Apple won’t have as much endurance in real word use as the bulkier iPhone 17 models.

Camera Versatility Limitations

The iPhone Air includes a 48MP “Fusion” main rear camera and an 18MP front camera. While the brand claims that the primary camera can offer 12MP 2x optical quality shots (like a telephoto), this is still just one camera sensor. Many devices already make this claim, especially on models with a large main camera. But unlike the base iPhone 17 or even the more expensive iPhone 17 Pros, the iPhone Air misses out on an ultra wide angle lens.

So you’re lacking the ability to take wider shots for group photos, landscapes, or other scenarios. The new telephoto shooters on the iPhone 17 Pro series were also a big highlight, which is another sensor the slimmest iPhone lacks. Considering its 999 US Dollar starting price (same as last year’s base iPhone 16 Pro model), justifying one camera is hard. Even its primary rival, the Galaxy S25 Edge, at least offers a secondary ultra wide camera.

eSIM-Only Might Be an Issue

On paper, eSIM sounds like the natural next step in connectivity. The iPhone Air is Apple’s first model to completely eliminate the physical SIM card slot entirely, which helped it make more space on the inside for the battery. However, it has potential downsides. Some carriers or regions still don’t fully support eSIMs, and switching phones or plans might become a bit more cumbersome. Travel roaming or dual SIM scenarios could also become an issue.

Lower Endurance Under Heavy Use

While Apple claims up to 40 hours of video playback with the optional MagSafe battery accessory, and all-day battery under normal conditions, the slim build and power-hungry display and chipset mean heavy users will see the drawbacks. Gaming, frequent video recording, or its high refresh rate display is easily going to drain the battery. With many phones offering larger than 5,000mAh battery packs, the iPhone Air might seem like a step backwards in terms of battery life.

Pricing vs What You Get

The iPhone Air starts at a premium price tag of 999 US Dollars. To recall, the 128GB iPhone 16 Pro had the same retail price. While the iPhone 17 Pro didn’t see any price jump, its base 256GB model costs 1,199 US Dollars. So at this price range, the Pro models definitely make more sense in terms of practicality, features, better sustained performance, and photography options.

The offers include instant cashback, no-cost EMI options, exchange bonuses and a special buyback program.

Cashback, EMI and buyback schemes

Customers purchasing the iPhone 17 are eligible for Rs 6,000 instant cashback along with six-month no-cost EMI options on ICICI and SBI bank cards.

The iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air are available with Rs 4,000 instant cashback and similar EMI benefits. The “iPhone for life” plan offers buyers the choice of paying 75% of the cost over 24 months, with the remaining 25% either paid later or covered by an assured buyback at the 24th month.

Apple Watch Ultra 3 carries an instant cashback of Rs 3,000, the Apple Watch Series 11 has Rs 2,500, and the Apple Watch SE 3 comes with Rs 2,000 cashback, all paired with six-month no-cost EMI. AirPods Pro 3 buyers receive Rs 2,000 instant cashback and the same EMI option.

Performance

The iPhone Air’s new A19 Pro chip, paired with Apple’s N1 and C1X wireless and modem chips, makes it incredibly power-efficient and consistent over time. Apple’s performance usually stays smooth for years, and the 8GB RAM doesn’t feel like a limitation thanks to tight software optimization. The A19 Pro can easily keep up with the best chips Android has to offer, including the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

But where Samsung wins is software versatility. With 12GB of RAM, the Galaxy S25 Edge has more overhead for multitasking and AI tasks. And more importantly, it brings in Google’s mature AI suite, including Circle to Search, Call Transcript, Live Translate, and more. These features are already deeply embedded across One UI 7. Apple Intelligence is only just rolling out properly with iOS 26. Despite both chips being capable of running on-device AI, Samsung’s deeper and more complete AI integration gives it the upper hand in actual user experience. The performance edge still goes to Edge.

Cameras: Numbers Don’t Lie

Apple nails the front camera. The new 18MP Center Stage selfie sensor is brilliant. Not just for its wider field of view and AI-based framing but also for the ability to shoot in landscape or portrait while holding the phone vertically. It’s one of the best selfie experiences on any phone right now, period.

But on the rear, Samsung wins by volume and versatility. The 200MP main sensor with 2x optical-quality zoom outguns Apple’s 48MP Fusion camera. The addition of an ultra-wide lens with autofocus gives Samsung the flexibility Apple’s single rear camera setup lacks.

The iPhone Air may deliver better consistency and lifelike colors thanks to its new Photonic Engine, but it simply doesn’t offer the same framing options or sensor variety.

Display and Durability

Both phones boast bright, vivid OLED displays with up to 120Hz adaptive refresh rates. But Apple takes the crown for brightness. The iPhone Air hits an insane 3000 nits peak outdoors, offering slightly better visibility under harsh sunlight compared to Samsung’s already excellent QHD+ AMOLED.

Apple has announced the iPhone Air, a new addition to its smartphone lineup that pushes the limits of thinness and performance. The device measures just 5.64mm thick and weighs 165g, making it the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever produced.

Apple iPhone Air Specifications

It features a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2736×1260 pixels and a pixel density of 460ppi. The screen supports ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz, HDR, True Tone, and reaches a peak outdoor brightness of 3000 nits. Both the front and back panels are protected by Ceramic Shield 2 for improved scratch resistance and glare reduction.

Apple has powered the iPhone Air with the new A19 Pro chip, which features a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. The chipset is built on a 3nm process and enables high performance while maintaining power efficiency. The device also includes the N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity, and the C1X modem, which is faster and 30% more efficient than the one in the iPhone 16 Pro.
