Nubia has just officially announced its new ‘trade in’ campaign. This offer is available in China and allows customers to exchange their Apple iPhone chargers with a Minions branded charger.

The new trade in offer is an event that is available from September 19 to September 23. For those interested, the Chinese smartphone maker is taking in online appointments as well. One can simple send a private message “Trade In” to “Nubia Phone & Recycling” and can set an appointment at a designated store near you. Once there, customers have an option for exchanging their old Apple iPhone chargers for Nubia’s sugar cube fast charger that features a design from Minions.

For those unaware, this charger can also be used with an Apple iPhone as well, and offers up to 30W of fast charging. Apart from this, the company even offers Minion co branded charger sets, including a 22.5W charger, 30Wgallium nitride chargers, 65W gallium nitride chargers and other data cables as well. Apple is presently the most valuable smartphone brand globally and its products are of premium quality. That doesn’t apparently bestow on them immunity from the usual glitches sometimes associated with electronic products. What happened to Birmingham, England-based 17-year-old Amie Hall may well be beyond a minor glitch as her iPhone charger reportedly set her blanket on fire.

The incident is reported to have happened on the night of March 18 while Miss Hall was about going to sleep. Before then, she plugged her iPhone to charge and apparently kept it on the bed, perhaps under the blanket. What happened next could have left her with severe burns or even be fatal. She suddenly noticed “flashing orange” flames on her blanket which caught the blanket on fire and inflicted her with a minor burn to her cheek.

However, the teenager quickly alerted her mum downstairs and they were able to extinguish the fire without needing the help of firefighters.

Miss Hall shared some pictures of her burns and the burnt charging cable on Facebook apparently to draw the attention of other persons to the danger of “leaving their phone to charge overnight”. Well, modern smartphones and their adapters come with several technologies to protect against overcharging, overheating, and others. But there are substandard third-party products out there without such protective features.

While it is not known at present what caused the fire, Birmingham Mail reports that the charger consisted of an Apple charging cable and another brand’s charging adapter even though Hall states otherwise. “This isn’t even a cheap charger, it’s an Apple charger,” she wrote on Facebook. “Please don’t go to bed and leave your phone charging overnight.”

Apple is currently investigating the cause of the fire and has stressed that all iPhone users should ensure they comply with safe charging standards. It is advised that users should not charge their iPhones in places where there is moisture or areas that are not well-ventilated. These could lead to the charger overheating or moistures could cause sparks. The company also advised regular checks for damaged accessories.

With the Apple iPhone 12 series, the company essentially removed any accessories that one would expect to arrive within the box. However, it seems that certain local laws are preventing the Cupertino based giant from following this practice in Brazil.

Previously, we had reported on Apple being forced to ship iPhones with the included EarPods in France due to local laws. Now, a similar case has occurred in Brazil, after the Brazilian state of São Paulo has basically forced the company to ship its new iPhones with the accessory included. According to a 9To5Mac report, local news agencies reported earlier today (3rd December 2020) that the public consumer protection agency has sent a notification to Apple, asking for clarification on the removal of the power adapter from the iPhone box.

Furthermore, the public agency is also asking the company to prove that not including the charger will be beneficial to the environment and the customers. Apple responded with its own arguments, which were its original points, that most users already have compatible chargers. Thus, removing the charger from the box will reduce the total carbon emissions. However, the Brazilian agency isn’t content with the response and ruled that the power adapter is an essential component of the product. So, shipping iPhones without it would be going against the Brazilian Consumer Defense Code.

As per the agency, the company hasn’t provided enough evidence that removing the chargers from the box would help the environment in any way. Additionally, Apple has also not guaranteed that it will offer the same technical support to consumers that purchased third party chargers. At the moment, the agency is waiting for Apple’s response, which must arrive by tomorrow lest the company faces a fine in the country. While the decision is exclusive to São Paulo State, Brazil’s National Consumer Secretary is considering enforcing this nationwide to have the company sell iPhones with its chargers.

The device comes in a really neat and high quality suitcase where all the items are packed neatly. 

Inside of it you can find the battery, jump starter clips with a smart control, some documentation, a wall charger, car charger and a computer charging cable with different charging plugs. Finally, there is an EC5 adapter, so you can use the device as a power bank to power up some gadgets (e.g. air compressor).

The 1byone car jump starter is made sports a really awesome looking design and it feels very nice in the hand.

It is made of rubberised plastic and on the front side we have a little LCD display, which show the amount of juice left in the battery. 

On the back there is a flashlight with 3 different flashing modes and it can be turned on by pressing and holding the power key, which is located on the right.

On the top we have output ports for the car jump starter cables and the USB port, which lets you charge any USB powered devices (with the included different power plugs to fit most of the laptops).

Also, there are two power input ports meaning that you can charge this device either with the supplied AC adapter or via any micro USB cable. 

Finally, on the left there is another output port to charge your laptop. 

Overall, the battery is very compact and lightweight considering the size of the cell inside and the overall feature set.

Allright, a lot of batteries can charge your phone or laptop, or any other device but is this device capable of jump starting an old car with a completely dead battery?

The thing is that the battery is completely dead that the car doesn’t even make any sound when I try to start it. That’s even worse situation that the last time I tried to start this vehicle. 

Allright, so what you have to do is to connect the jump start cables to the car’s battery. However, I highly recommend you cleaning both terminals of the car’s battery with a dry cloth to make sure there is a good contact with jump starter cables. 

The connecting part is pretty easy as you need to connect a positive red colour cable to the positive terminal of the car’s battery and a negative black colour cable to the negative terminal of the car’s battery. Then, you have to connect the cable to the jump starter and after that you have to press a start switch on the control with a little monitor and start your car within 30 seconds.

This little gadget is definitely working. Honestly, I’ve tested a previous model that I am still using till now like 20 times with this car and 2009 Honda Civic and only a few times it didn’t start the car from the first time. 

A few complaints would be regarding the design, though. Yes, the build quality is great but that rubberised plastic is prone to fingerprints and it is quite easy to scratch.

All in all, I believe this gadget is really useful either for ones who have old car batteries or for those who just want to have a useful gadget in their toolbox that can come handy in emergency situations.
