<p>A dummy unit of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a>&#8216;s foldable iPhone has surfaced online, offering what might be our first real-world look at the device&#8217;s overall shape.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="758" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-1024x758.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-740544" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-1024x758.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-300x222.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-768x569.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-1536x1137.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-485x360.jpg 485w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-696x515.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-1068x791.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-1920x1422.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-567x420.jpg 567w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/006bWoNYly1idoo6ouotxj323c1jsk99.jpg 2000w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The dummy comes in a white finish and appears to follow a book-style folding design. One thing that immediately stands out is how rounded the device looks compared to many existing foldables. The camera module is also hard to miss.</p>

<p>At first glance, it almost resembles the camera bar seen on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/09/09/apple-iphone-air-thinnest-iphone-launched-specs-price/">iPhone Air</a>. The camera setup consists of two rear sensors rather than three, which matches earlier reports suggesting Apple may prioritize thinness over packing every possible camera into the device.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-Air-2-mock-render-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="iPhone Air 2 mock render" class="wp-image-715396" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-Air-2-mock-render-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-Air-2-mock-render-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-Air-2-mock-render-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-Air-2-mock-render-696x391.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-Air-2-mock-render-1068x600.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-Air-2-mock-render-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/iPhone-Air-2-mock-render.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>As for colors, the white finish shown here fits with previous rumors claiming Apple could keep things fairly conservative for its first foldable. While the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to introduce more colorful options, the foldable model has repeatedly been linked to silver and darker finishes.</p>

<p>Beyond the design itself, rumors surrounding the device have remained fairly consistent over the past few months. Most reports point to a foldable with a roughly 5.5-inch outer display and a larger inner screen measuring around 7.8 inches when opened. Apple&#8217;s A20 Pro chip is also expected to power the device.</p>

<p>One rumor that continues to generate discussion is the possible return of Touch ID. Several reports claim Apple may use a side-mounted fingerprint scanner instead of Face ID, largely because fitting the full TrueDepth system into an ultra-thin foldable design presents additional engineering challenges.</p>

<p>Of course, it is worth remembering what these images actually are: a replica based on leaks and rumors. They are useful for visualizing the device, but they should not be treated as confirmation of Apple&#8217;s final design.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a>’s foldable iPhone is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/19/apple-foldable-iphone-production-q3-2025-launch-2026/">expected</a> to arrive this September, and the first third-party cases for the device have already started appearing online, giving us another early look at what Apple’s first foldable could end up looking like.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e61d652e-1d66-465e-b8c6-a1de075b566e-1024x576.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-740058" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e61d652e-1d66-465e-b8c6-a1de075b566e-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e61d652e-1d66-465e-b8c6-a1de075b566e-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e61d652e-1d66-465e-b8c6-a1de075b566e-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e61d652e-1d66-465e-b8c6-a1de075b566e-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e61d652e-1d66-465e-b8c6-a1de075b566e-1068x601.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e61d652e-1d66-465e-b8c6-a1de075b566e-747x420.webp 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e61d652e-1d66-465e-b8c6-a1de075b566e.webp 1440w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Chinese accessory brand iFunSmart has begun listing protective cases designed for the upcoming device. That may sound a little early, but case makers often get access to dimensions and CAD-based mockups months ahead of launch in order to prepare accessories in advance.</p>

<p>Based on the case design, the foldable iPhone appears to stick with a relatively slim profile and a fairly minimal rear camera setup. The camera cutout only leaves space for two lenses, which lines up with previous rumors claiming Apple may skip a dedicated telephoto camera on its first foldable.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="800" height="800" data-id="740055" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/831849f3-2ddb-488c-a22a-704a5e960e5a.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-740055" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/831849f3-2ddb-488c-a22a-704a5e960e5a.webp 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/831849f3-2ddb-488c-a22a-704a5e960e5a-300x300.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/831849f3-2ddb-488c-a22a-704a5e960e5a-150x150.webp 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/831849f3-2ddb-488c-a22a-704a5e960e5a-768x768.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/831849f3-2ddb-488c-a22a-704a5e960e5a-696x696.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/831849f3-2ddb-488c-a22a-704a5e960e5a-420x420.webp 420w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>

<p>One noticeable detail is the circular magnetic ring built into the case itself. Interestingly, some reports suggest the phone may not actually include built-in MagSafe magnets, meaning Apple could rely more heavily on magnetic cases and accessories instead.</p>

<p>The case also uses a segmented design rather than a traditional single-piece shell, which is expected given the folding hinge. There are visible cutouts for the Camera Control button, although there does not appear to be a dedicated Action Button opening.</p>

<p>Current rumors point to Apple launching the foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series. The device is expected to feature a 5.3 to 5.5-inch outer display and a larger 7.7 to 7.8-inch folding inner panel. Leaks also suggest Apple is aiming for an extremely thin design, reportedly measuring around 4.5mm when unfolded.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e37b3282-1de2-4c6c-a329-fe6eb8062379-1024x576.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-740052" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e37b3282-1de2-4c6c-a329-fe6eb8062379-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e37b3282-1de2-4c6c-a329-fe6eb8062379-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e37b3282-1de2-4c6c-a329-fe6eb8062379-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e37b3282-1de2-4c6c-a329-fe6eb8062379-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e37b3282-1de2-4c6c-a329-fe6eb8062379-1068x601.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e37b3282-1de2-4c6c-a329-fe6eb8062379-747x420.webp 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/e37b3282-1de2-4c6c-a329-fe6eb8062379.webp 1440w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>On the hardware side, the foldable iPhone is rumored to use Apple’s A20 Pro chip with 12GB RAM and dual 48MP rear cameras. Interestingly, several reports claim Apple could bring back Touch ID through a side-mounted fingerprint sensor instead of using Face ID.</p>

<p>Pricing will probably be the biggest hurdle for most buyers. Current estimates place the foldable iPhone somewhere around the $2,000 mark, which would easily make it one of Apple’s most expensive mainstream devices yet.</p>

<p>At this stage, nothing is officially confirmed of course, but the appearance of early accessory listings does suggest Apple’s foldable project is moving closer toward reality.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/oppo-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oppo</a> recently debuted the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-find-n6/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oppo Find N6</a> foldable with a crease that is almost negligible in daily use. It’s not completely invisible, but it’s subtle enough that many users barely notice it while scrolling or watching videos. Even Apple is rumored to use a similar <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/24/apple-iphone-fold-leaks-crease-free-display-a20-pro-price/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">display technology</a> in its first foldable, which could launch this September.</p>

<p>However, the Cupertino giant appears to be even more serious about making this display the best it can be. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1.jpg?x44794" alt="" /></figure></div>

<h2><strong>Apple iPhone Fold will use multiple layers of protective layers between the display</strong></h2>

<p>According to supply chain reports shared by tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple’s foldable display could use a dual-layer glass structure built from UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) and UFG materials.</p>

<p>In simple terms, this means the screen may consist of multiple glass layers rather than a single thin sheet. The display panel itself would sit between these layers instead of being placed directly against the hinge mechanism.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Crease-Free-Display.jpg?x44794" alt="" /></figure></div>

<p>This design could help solve one of the biggest problems with foldables: durability. When a foldable phone bends thousands of times during its lifetime, the pressure around the hinge can gradually create a visible crease in the middle of the screen. By separating the display layer from the hinge area and using multiple glass layers, Apple may be trying to reduce stress on the panel.</p>

<p>The rumored display may also include a form of self-healing glass. The idea is that the display could gradually smooth itself over time, helping it maintain a cleaner look after repeated folding.</p>

<p>Oppo did something similar with the Find N6, which it says uses Auto-Smoothing Flex Glass, where the crease slowly smooths itself out over time.</p>

<p>None of this is confirmed yet, and Apple rarely comments on products before they launch. But we know for certain that a foldable iPhone is coming.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="585" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-1024x585.jpg?x44794" alt="Alleged iPhone Fold design" class="wp-image-711343" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-1024x585.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-300x171.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-768x439.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-696x398.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-1068x610.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-735x420.jpg 735w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render.jpg 1344w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Alleged iPhone Fold design</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>According to Tim Long, Apple could unveil the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-fold">iPhone Fold</a> alongside the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-18-pro">iPhone 18 Pro</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-18-pro-max">Pro Max</a> in September, following its typical announcement cycle. However, the foldable model may only go on sale in December 2026, indicating a staggered rollout strategy.</p>

<p>Apple has followed a similar approach in the past. Devices such as the iPhone X and iPhone XR were introduced during the standard launch event but became available weeks later. This suggests that a delayed release for a new form factor like a foldable device would not be unusual.</p>

<p>The delay could be linked to production complexity or supply chain considerations. Reports indicate that the foldable iPhone has reached an advanced stage of development, with its design nearing completion, which supports the possibility of a release within the year.</p>

<p>The iPhone Fold is expected to support multitasking features such as running two apps side by side when unfolded. This would align it with existing foldable devices that focus on productivity and larger screen usage.</p>

<p>Tim Long also suggests that Apple may adopt a split launch strategy for its upcoming lineup. The base iPhone 18 and related models could arrive in March 2027, alongside either an iPhone Air successor or a possible return of the Plus variant.</p>

<p>If this strategy is implemented, Apple could move towards a more flexible release cycle, allowing it to better manage new categories like foldable devices while maintaining updates to its main lineup.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a>’s foldable iPhone has been “coming soon” for years, at least according to leaks. Now, a new round of details suggests the company may finally be closing in on one of the biggest challenges that’s kept it out of the foldable race: the display crease.</p>

<p>One of the main criticisms of current foldables, including devices like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/09/galaxy-z-fold-7-is-official-samsung-thinnest-fold/">Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7</a>, is the crease. It’s not always a dealbreaker, but it’s noticeable. Reports over the years have suggested Apple wasn’t willing to enter the category until it could meaningfully reduce that crease.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/64596-134681-iPhone-Fold-16-xl-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-728574" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/64596-134681-iPhone-Fold-16-xl-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/64596-134681-iPhone-Fold-16-xl-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/64596-134681-iPhone-Fold-16-xl-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/64596-134681-iPhone-Fold-16-xl-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/64596-134681-iPhone-Fold-16-xl-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/64596-134681-iPhone-Fold-16-xl-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/64596-134681-iPhone-Fold-16-xl.jpg 1312w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>A new leak from Chinese Weibo account Fixed Focus Digital claims that progress has been made. According to the post, Apple’s first foldable, widely referred to as the “<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/02/03/first-ever-foldable-iphone-to-rival-foldables-from-china-in-battery-capacity/">iPhone Fold</a>”, could feature an inner display with a crease depth of under 0.15 mm and a fold angle below 2.5 degrees.</p>

<p>Those numbers might not mean much at first glance, but they’re telling. A smaller crease depth means a shallower indentation along the fold, both visually and to the touch. For context, a human hair is roughly 0.05–0.1 mm thick, so anything under 0.15 mm would be relatively subtle. Current foldables often measure significantly deeper at the crease. If accurate, Apple’s implementation would be among the flattest we’ve seen so far: not invisible, but close.</p>

<p>The display itself is reportedly being supplied by Samsung Display, using newer materials and improved lamination techniques to better distribute stress along the hinge.</p>

<p>Beyond the screen, a few design details are also circulating. The rear camera module is said to resemble the minimalist layout of the iPhone Air, featuring two sensors: likely a main and an ultra-wide. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/01/17/iphone-18-pro-18-pro-max-and-iphone-fold-specs-no-dynamic-island-on-foldable/">Touch ID could return</a>, embedded in the power button, replacing Face ID to save internal space and avoid additional cutouts on the inner display.</p>

<p>Production orders are reportedly in place, pointing to a potential September 2026 launch window, possibly alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. If that timeline holds, Apple’s first foldable could finally become official next fall.</p>

<p>If the crease really is as shallow as claimed, it would explain why Apple has taken its time.</p>

<p>In his February 22 edition of the Power On, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared new details about the color options currently being tested for the upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/02/23/iphone-18-pro-could-get-another-selfie-camera-upgrade-in-2026/">iPhone 18 Pro</a> lineup, as well as Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone.</p>

<h2>A new red for the Pro models?</h2>

<p>According to Gurman’s supply-chain sources, Apple is experimenting with a “deep red” finish for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. If it makes it to production, it would be the first time a Pro model has launched in red.</p>

<p>This isn’t expected to be a bright red finish. Instead, the tone is described as darker, closer to burgundy or wine. Earlier rumors mentioning brown or purplish shades may have been referencing variations of this same concept.</p>

<p>Apple has occasionally used bold colors to differentiate Pro models in recent years. Last year’s standout Pro color reportedly performed well in some markets, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple continues leaning into distinctive flagship hues.</p>

<p>That said, nothing is final. Color testing happens months ahead of launch, and some finishes never make it past internal prototypes.</p>

<h2>Foldable stays conservative</h2>

<p>On the other end of the spectrum is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, often referred to as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/02/03/first-ever-foldable-iphone-to-rival-foldables-from-china-in-battery-capacity/">iPhone Fold</a>. Gurman suggests Apple is planning to keep things simple for its debut foldable. Instead of experimenting with bold finishes, the company is said to be focusing on classic tones like black, dark gray, and silver or white.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/The-iPhone-Fold-may-be-doomed-to-flop-and-it-has-nothing-to-do-with-Samsung-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-728163" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/The-iPhone-Fold-may-be-doomed-to-flop-and-it-has-nothing-to-do-with-Samsung-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/The-iPhone-Fold-may-be-doomed-to-flop-and-it-has-nothing-to-do-with-Samsung-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/The-iPhone-Fold-may-be-doomed-to-flop-and-it-has-nothing-to-do-with-Samsung-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/The-iPhone-Fold-may-be-doomed-to-flop-and-it-has-nothing-to-do-with-Samsung-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/The-iPhone-Fold-may-be-doomed-to-flop-and-it-has-nothing-to-do-with-Samsung-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/The-iPhone-Fold-may-be-doomed-to-flop-and-it-has-nothing-to-do-with-Samsung-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/The-iPhone-Fold-may-be-doomed-to-flop-and-it-has-nothing-to-do-with-Samsung.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>For now, the picture forming is fairly clear: the Pro models may take a bit of a design risk with a darker red option, while the foldable plays it safe for its first outing. If accurate, it would be a small but telling glimpse into how Apple is positioning its next-generation hardware.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a>’s first foldable iPhone is still some distance away, but new leaks suggest battery life could be one of its main selling points. According to a new leak, Apple may be planning its largest battery ever for the foldable model.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="506" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-725695" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1-696x391.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure></div>

<p>Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital claims Apple’s foldable iPhone could ship with a battery exceeding 5,500mAh, which would already put it ahead of every iPhone currently on the market. For reference, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/09/09/apple-iphone-17-pro-and-pro-max-launched-specs-price/">iPhone 17 Pro Max</a> tops out at 5,088mAh, making this a meaningful jump rather than a minor increase.</p>

<p>This isn’t the first time similar numbers have surfaced. Earlier leaks from yeux1122 suggested Apple was testing battery capacities in the 5,400–5,800mAh range, alongside efforts to slim down internal components and improve power efficiency. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also pointed to Apple using higher-density battery cells, likely to balance size, weight, and longevity.</p>

<p>If the numbers are accurate, Apple’s foldable would be competitive even by foldable standards. Recent devices like the Huawei Mate X7, Oppo Find N5, and Honor Magic V series all sit in roughly the same battery range, while Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup continues to lag behind in capacity.</p>

<p>iPhone Fold: 5,500mAh (rumored)<br>Huawei Mate X7: 5,600 mAh (or 5,525 mAh in some variants)<br>Honor Magic V5: 5,820 mAh (international) or 6,100 mAh (China model)<br>Xiaomi Mix Fold 4: 5,100 mAh<br>Oppo Find N5: 5,600 mAh<br>Vivo X Fold5: 6,000 mAh</p>

<p>While the leak focuses on battery capacity rather than real-world battery life, Apple’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/11/12/oneplus-15-beats-iphone-17-pro-max-and-xiaomi-17-pro-max-in-battery-life/">track record suggests</a> the numbers could translate well in practice. iPhones often deliver longer endurance than Android devices with significantly larger batteries, largely due to Apple’s tight hardware-software integration. If Apple’s foldable launches with a battery similar in size to Chinese rivals — and notably larger than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup — it could realistically offer stronger battery life than many competing foldables.</p>

<p>The foldable iPhone is rumored to feature a 7.8-inch inner display, a 5.5-inch outer screen, <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjd6NaN8LySAxXOSWwGHRJKPGkQFnoECBkQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gizmochina.com%2F2025%2F12%2F15%2Fapple-iphone-fold-touch-id-fingerprint-scanner-wide-foldable-leak%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw1JcQkWAPykpZsc-mVm9_WI&amp;opi=89978449">Touch ID integrated into the side button</a>, a dual-camera setup, and Apple’s upcoming A20 chip with a custom modem. A launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series in 2026 is currently expected.</p>

<p>According to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a> analyst Jeff Pu, the company plans to launch the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone in September 2026, while pushing the standard iPhone 18 models to spring 2027. The details were shared with investors and later reported by outlets including 9to5Mac.</p>

<p>On the hardware side, all three high-end models are said to feature 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip, reportedly built on a 2nm process. They are also expected to use Apple’s in-house C2 modem, marking a further shift away from third-party connectivity solutions.</p>

<p>Screen sizes are tipped to remain at 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. Camera hardware is said to include three 48MP sensors, including a periscope telephoto lens. Face ID stays in place, though under-display components could further <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/18/iphone-18-pro-could-get-a-major-front-redesign-with-unconventional-hole-punch-camera-placement/">shrink the Dynamic Island</a>.</p>

<h2>iPhone Fold lacks Dynamic Island</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-723876" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/66385-139210-Squat-Fold-1-xl1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The bigger shift comes with the iPhone Fold. Apple’s first foldable is tipped to feature a 7.8-inch internal display paired with a 5.3-inch outer screen. Unlike the iPhone 18 series, it reportedly drops Face ID entirely and relies on Touch ID instead, possibly built into the power button. The body is said to combine titanium and aluminum, likely to balance durability, weight, and cost.</p>

<p>On the camera side, the foldable is expected to use a dual 48MP setup, likely consisting of a main and ultrawide sensor. Some earlier leaks have suggested Apple may skip a telephoto lens due to space constraints, which would not be unusual for the brand&#8217;s first-generation foldable.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-1024x768.webp?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-723879" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-1024x768.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-300x225.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-768x576.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-696x522.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-1068x801.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-560x420.webp 560w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-80x60.webp 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080-265x198.webp 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iphone-18-series-spec-pu-q82-w1440-h1080.webp 1440w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>While selfie cameras were previously rumored to jump to 24MP, Pu now claims Apple will reuse the 18MP sensor seen in the iPhone 17 lineup. The iPhone Fold is expected to include two front-facing cameras &#8211; one on the cover display and another on the inner flexible screen. The absence of a Dynamic Island and the switch to Touch ID could result in a cleaner, more immersive experience, something iOS users have been waiting for on larger displays.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple</a> is reportedly moving closer to its long-rumoured foldable iPhone, with fresh information suggesting that internal testing has already begun. While Apple has not confirmed anything officially, recent leaks indicate that the company is planning to unveil it alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Here is some new information shared about the iPhone Fold (tentative name) by reliable tipster Digital Chat Station.</p>

<h3><strong>Apple foldable iPhone enters early testing</strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="799" height="239" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-86.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-723406" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-86.png 799w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-86-300x90.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-86-768x230.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/image-86-696x208.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption>iPhone Fold leak by DCS</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>According to DCS, Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected to arrive as a major industry-level product rather than an experimental first attempt. The device is said to feature a new-generation foldable display design that differs from current foldables on the market. It is expected to break cover in September this year along with the iPhone 18 Pro series.</p>

<p>The inner screen is tipped to measure around 7.58 inches, while the outer display is expected to be approximately 5.25 inches. Interestingly, the engineering prototype is said to be slightly smaller than earlier rumors suggested, which could help improve ergonomics and daily usability.</p>

<p>The tipster also notes that Apple is working on a new in-house application processor specifically designed for this foldable form factor. This aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of tighter hardware and software integration, allowing it to fine-tune performance, efficiency, and thermal control for unconventional designs. Alongside the new chip, the foldable iPhone is said to debut with a new foldable-focused operating system that adapts the interface for multi-screen usage and seamless app transitions.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="818" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iPhone-Fold-leak-by-DCS-1-1024x818.png?x44794" alt="iPhone Fold leak by DCS" class="wp-image-723408" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iPhone-Fold-leak-by-DCS-1-1024x818.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iPhone-Fold-leak-by-DCS-1-300x240.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iPhone-Fold-leak-by-DCS-1-768x613.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iPhone-Fold-leak-by-DCS-1-1536x1226.png 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iPhone-Fold-leak-by-DCS-1-696x556.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iPhone-Fold-leak-by-DCS-1-1068x853.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iPhone-Fold-leak-by-DCS-1-526x420.png 526w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/iPhone-Fold-leak-by-DCS-1.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>iPhone Fold design by DCS</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Unlike many early foldables that focused heavily on specifications, Apple appears to be prioritizing design maturity, display quality, and in-hand comfort. DCS adds that the grip and overall feel of the device should be notably refined, suggesting that Apple is taking a cautious but deliberate approach.</p>

<p>If these details hold true, Apple’s foldable iPhone could mark a significant turning point for other manufacturers, as rival brands are also said to be working on wider foldable phones. Samsung is rumoured to debut the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/24/alleged-samsung-wide-fold-dummy-looks-surprisingly-similar-to-apples-iphone-fold/">Galaxy Fold Wide</a> in July this year, whereas Oppo is said to be working on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2026/01/09/oppo-find-n7-wider-foldable-launch-timeframe-key-specs/">Oppo Find N7</a> with a similar design, with a launch expected in September this year.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a>’s long-rumored <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable-iphone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foldable iPhone </a>has finally shown up in what are probably the first good-looking renders. And they come with a bold claim that its screen crease might be nearly invisible.</p>

<p>Courtesy of Jon Prosser at Front Page Tech, the YouTuber published a video today, showing the iPhone Fold’s design in full. Prosser claims Apple has chosen to make a book-style foldable instead of a clamshell because of what he thinks Apple has pulled off here.</p>

<p>The iPhone Fold reportedly features a 5.5-inch display on the front, while the inner screen will measure 7.8 inches. The highlight, of course, is the crease. Or the lack of it. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Crease-Free-Display.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="432" data-id="720713" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Crease-Free-Display.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-720713" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Crease-Free-Display.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Crease-Free-Display-300x144.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Crease-Free-Display-768x369.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Crease-Free-Display-696x334.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Crease-Free-Display-875x420.jpg 875w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Apple-iPhone-Fold-Display.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="432" data-id="720712" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Apple-iPhone-Fold-Display.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-720712" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Apple-iPhone-Fold-Display.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Apple-iPhone-Fold-Display-300x144.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Apple-iPhone-Fold-Display-768x369.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Apple-iPhone-Fold-Display-696x334.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Apple-iPhone-Fold-Display-875x420.jpg 875w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a></figure>
</figure>

<p>Prosser says Apple is using a combination of a pressure-dispersing metal plate, liquid metal in the hinge, and an in-cell touch panel to give iPhone Fold a crease-free look.</p>

<p>The claim lines up with an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/20/apple-foldable-iphone-crease-free-display/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">earlier report</a> that suggests Apple is developing ultra-thin flexible glass (UFG) specifically to tackle the crease problem. If true, this could be Apple’s biggest contribution to foldable hardware yet.</p>

<p>Moreover, the iPhone Fold reportedly measures 9mm when folded and just 4.5mm when unfolded.</p>

<h3><strong>Performance, Camera, Battery, and More</strong></h3>

<p>The iPhone Fold is expected to run on Apple’s A20 Pro chip. It will also use Apple’s second-generation C2 modem and a high-density battery that should offer great battery life.</p>

<p>As for cameras, you can expect two at the back housed in an iPhone Air–like module. You’ll also get one camera on the cover display and another on the internal screen. Sadly, no under-display camera. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" data-id="720715" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-720715" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/iPhone-Fold-Render-1-1-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure>
</figure>

<p>Another claim that corroborates previous rumors is that the Fold will skip Face ID in favor of a fingerprint sensor. It will reside in the power button, which Prosser says Apple has moved to the top of the device.</p>

<p>Last but not least, Prosser claims the iPhone Fold will come in only black and white color options and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/03/19/apples-foldable-iphone-could-cost-as-high-as-2300-industry-analyst-speculates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">at a price </a>between $2,000 and $2,500.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/">Samsung</a> is reportedly preparing a notable shift in its foldable strategy for 2026. New leaks suggest the company could align some of its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold designs with Apple’s long-rumored <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/20/apple-foldable-iphone-crease-free-display/">foldable iPhone</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="585" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-1024x585.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-711343" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-1024x585.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-300x171.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-768x439.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-696x398.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-1068x610.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-735x420.jpg 735w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render.jpg 1344w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>According to reports, Samsung plans to launch two Galaxy Z Fold models next year. One of them is said to feature a noticeably wider form factor, similar to what Apple is expected to use for its first foldable iPhone.</p>

<p>This alleged Galaxy Z Fold Wide is tipped to use a near 4:3 aspect ratio when unfolded. The inner display is said to measure around 7.58 inches, offering a more square, tablet-like experience. The wider layout could make multitasking and app scaling more comfortable, especially for productivity-focused users.</p>

<p>When closed, the device would also be wider than current Galaxy Z Fold models. This approach is closer to designs seen on the original Pixel Fold and Oppo Find N, rather than Samsung’s tall and narrow Fold series so far.</p>

<p>Reports also suggest Samsung could introduce a third foldable in 2026. This version may feature a 7.6-inch inner display with a similar 4:3 ratio and a much wider outer screen, potentially around 5.4 inches. If accurate, it would be significantly broader than the cover display on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8.</p>

<p>All three foldables are expected to arrive in the second half of 2026, possibly around the same time Apple debuts its own foldable device.</p>

<p>Design changes may not be the only overlap. Samsung is also rumored to be upgrading wireless charging speeds across its premium lineup. The Galaxy Z Fold Wide is said to support <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/12/06/galaxy-s26-series-rumored-to-finally-break-15w-wireless-charging-barrier/">upgraded 25W wireless charging</a>, which would be the fastest seen on a Galaxy foldable so far.</p>

<p>This would bring Samsung in line with Apple’s current wireless charging speeds, already supported by recent iPhones using Qi2-compatible chargers. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is also expected to receive the same 25W wireless charging upgrade.</p>

<p>For now, these details point to a more aggressive strategy from Samsung as it prepares for increased competition in the foldable market—especially if Apple enters the space in 2026.</p>

<p>The foldable phone trend <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/08/28/honor-magic-v5-launched-globally-specs-price/">has been thriving</a> for years without <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a> in the mix, but fans hoping for the company’s long-awaited entry might have to wait a little longer. Fresh reports suggest that Apple’s first foldable iPhone could be pushed back to 2027, with key engineering hurdles still being ironed out behind the scenes.</p>

<p>According to a research note from Japan’s Mizuho Securities, cited by Korean outlet <a href="https://www.thelec.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=42248">The Elec</a>, Apple is still refining the hinge and display structure for its foldable model—two of the most complex parts of any foldable device. The company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/30/apples-first-foldable-iphone-could-arrive-in-2026-with-a-1999-price-tag/">was reportedly targeting</a> mass production in the third quarter of 2026 to coincide with the iPhone 18 launch, but that timeline now appears unlikely. If the new schedule holds, the device could instead debut alongside the rumored iPhone 18e in spring 2027.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="585" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-1024x585.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-711343" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-1024x585.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-300x171.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-768x439.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-696x398.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-1068x610.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render-735x420.jpg 735w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-render.jpg 1344w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Mizuho has also trimmed its panel production forecast, dropping from an expected 13 million units to around 9 million. Even in an optimistic case, initial shipments could be limited to 5–7 million units. The total production plan sits somewhere between 10 and 15 million units, depending on final pricing and durability. The foldable is expected to cost well above $2,000 (the price tag for the Z Fold7), with Samsung Display remaining the exclusive OLED panel supplier.</p>

<p>Early details hint at a premium setup: a 7.8-inch inner LTPO display with Color filter on Encapsulation (CoE) for better brightness and thinner panels, paired with a 5.5-inch outer screen for quick access and daily use.</p>

<p>For now, Apple’s methodical approach suggests it’s not rushing into the foldable race. Whether that patience pays off—or simply gives rivals like Samsung and Honor more time to expand their lead—remains to be seen.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a>’s long-awaited entry into the foldable phone space is finally taking shape, with the iPhone Fold expected to arrive <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/30/apples-first-foldable-iphone-could-arrive-in-2026-with-a-1999-price-tag/">in 2026</a>. But the real buzz this week isn’t about its design or specs — it’s about its hinge. According to a new report, Apple has managed to make the hinge dramatically cheaper to produce, which could give the company a big profit boost while keeping its trademark premium pricing intact.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="999" height="562" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-hinge.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-710819" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-hinge.jpg 999w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-hinge-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-hinge-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-hinge-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/iPhone-Fold-hinge-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px" /></figure></div>

<p>Reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the iPhone Fold’s hinge is expected to cost just $70 to $80, lower than the previously estimated $100 to $120, thanks to Foxconn’s optimized assembly process. Most of the hinges — around 65% — will reportedly come from a joint venture between Foxconn and Shin Zu Shing, while Amphenol will handle the rest. Down the road, Luxshare-ICT could join the supply chain after 2027, helping drive costs even lower. Kuo calls the hinge a “new battleground for system assemblers,” suggesting competition will only intensify as more players join in.</p>

<p>The hinge is a crucial piece of any foldable phone — it defines both the feel and the durability. By cutting costs here, Apple can either enjoy wider margins or, less likely, pass savings to consumers. Realistically, it means Apple will have more room to invest in high-end features like a crease-resistant flexible display or improved camera hardware, all while maintaining a strong profit margin.</p>

<p>Pricing is still anyone’s guess, but with Samsung’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7/">Galaxy Z Fold 7</a> sitting around $1,999, it’s safe to assume the iPhone Fold won’t come cheap — likely over $2,000.</p>

<p>As competition in the foldable market tightens, Apple’s move shows its old strategy still holds: innovate where it counts, streamline the rest, and make every part of the process pay off. The iPhone Fold might not just fold — it might redefine what premium means in a foldable phone.</p>

<p>A new investor note from renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shed light on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple’s</a> foldable device strategy. The report indicates when Apple could release its foldable iPhone and iPad, along with details about its supply chain partners and backend processing advancements.</p>

<h3><strong>iPhone Fold expected in 2026</strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple iPhone Fold screen size leak" class="wp-image-698670" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Apple iPhone Fold mock render</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>According to the note, Apple is preparing to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026. The device will use ultra-thin glass (UTG), with Taiwan-based General Interface Solution (GIS) handling backend processes such as cutting, inspection and packaging. GIS will work closely with Corning, which will supply the raw UTG materials.</p>

<p>The complexity of UTG preparation is significantly higher than conventional smartphone glass, with costs estimated at two to four times more. Apple has reportedly revised its shipment expectations upwards, now targeting between 8 to 10 million units in 2026 and 20 to 25 million in 2027. These higher projections highlight Apple’s confidence in the foldable iPhone’s demand.</p>

<h3><strong>Foldable iPad on track for 2028</strong></h3>

<p>The foldable iPhone will be followed by a foldable iPad, scheduled for 2028. Like the iPhone, its display will rely on UTG backend processing exclusively managed by GIS. However, due to its larger size, the foldable iPad’s UTG panels will carry a considerably higher unit cost. Shipments for the device are forecasted at 0.5 to 1 million units in the first year.</p>

<h3><strong>Vision Air to join Apple’s hardware roadmap</strong></h3>

<p>Alongside foldables, Apple is also working on Vision Air, a lighter and more affordable version of the Vision Pro expected in 2027. GIS will play a crucial role here as well, becoming the sole supplier of Pancake lenses in addition to lamination. Shipments of Vision Air are projected to reach around one million units in the launch year, giving Apple’s supply chain partners another long-term growth driver.</p>

So read on to find out.</p>

<h2>Huawei Mate XTs Outpricing the iPhone Fold?</h2>

<p>So far, we&#8217;ve seen rumors of the Chinese tech giant&#8217;s Mate XT 2 phone. However, the latest <a href="https://phone.cnmo.com/news/795206.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports </a>and <a href="https://weibo.com/1768104017/PDrqVvCsV" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">leaks </a>from China (Via <em><a href="https://www.notebookcheck.net/Huawei-Mate-XTs-tipped-to-cost-more-than-Apple-iPhone-Fold-following-September-2025-release.1073540.0.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NotebookCheck</a></em>) suggest that the next tri-folding model is the Mate XTs. This sounds similar to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-xs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mate Xs </a>in the past. Huawei is reportedly planning to unveil this model on September 12 in China. In other words, it is arriving during the same week as the Apple iPhone 17 series.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Huawei-Mate-XT-durability-test.jpg?x44794" alt="Huawei-Mate-XT-durability-test" class="wp-image-656914" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Huawei-Mate-XT-durability-test.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Huawei-Mate-XT-durability-test-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Huawei-Mate-XT-durability-test-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Huawei-Mate-XT-durability-test-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Huawei-Mate-XT-durability-test-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Huawei Mate XT</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Samsung is also expected to be working on a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/17/samsungs-tri-fold-wont-be-called-galaxy-g-fold-trademark-hints-at-a-different-name/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tri-folding Galaxy Z</a> phone, while Apple&#8217;s first ever foldable iPhone may debut sometime next year. But despite being a seasoned player in the foldable segment, its new Mate XTs could outpace the iPhone Fold in the pricing department. The Cupertino based giant&#8217;s first foldable may launch for around 15,999 Yuan or about 2,225 US Dollars. However, the Mate XTs tri-folding phone may hit the shelves for about 20,000 Yuan (roughly 2,780 US Dollars).</p>

<p>At this price point, it is a true ultra premium smartphone that would likely interest enthusiasts with a lot of disposable income. In our previous report, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/25/huawei-mate-xt-2-tri-fold-colors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">color variants of the new Mate XT </a>tri-folding model, which could include Mystic Black, Auspicious Red, Crimson Purple, and Bright White. There are also rumors of a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/18/huawei-mate-xt-2-is-getting-more-durable-with-ufg-glass/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tougher UFG glass</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/23/huawei-mate-xt-2-september-launch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">satellite connectivity </a>as well.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/">Apple</a> is still not ready to enter the foldable phone race. According to a new investor report, the company is aiming to launch its first foldable iPhone—possibly called the iPhone Fold—alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026.</p>

<p>The device is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/27/iphone-fold-screen-size-leaks-and-its-smaller-than-galaxy-z-fold-7">expected</a> to feature a 7.7-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen. Powering it could be the same A20 Pro chip set to power the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/19/apple-may-finally-ditch-the-dynamic-island-in-iphone-18-pro-series-with-under-display-face-id/">iPhone 18 Pro</a>, with software based on iOS 27 optimized for the foldable experience. Apple may also include Face ID or even bring back Touch ID for added flexibility.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Foldable-iPhone-2023-Feature-Iridescent-Search-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-699101" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Foldable-iPhone-2023-Feature-Iridescent-Search-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Foldable-iPhone-2023-Feature-Iridescent-Search-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Foldable-iPhone-2023-Feature-Iridescent-Search-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Foldable-iPhone-2023-Feature-Iridescent-Search-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Foldable-iPhone-2023-Feature-Iridescent-Search-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Foldable-iPhone-2023-Feature-Iridescent-Search-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Foldable-iPhone-2023-Feature-Iridescent-Search-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Foldable-iPhone-2023-Feature-Iridescent-Search.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>This first generation foldable iPhone is said to start at $1,999—matching Samsung’s current Fold pricing. But JPMorgan forecasts that around 45 million units could be sold within two years, which would be a bold leap given that the entire foldable market sold less than half that in 2024.</p>

<p>Also, most Android phone makers have now <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/09/galaxy-z-fold-7-is-official-samsung-thinnest-fold/">fine-tuned their foldable</a> hardware and resolved many of the early issues with this form factor. It’ll be interesting to see if Apple can match that level of quality with its first-generation foldable, and whether buyers are willing to place their trust in a first generation device. That said, the strength of Apple’s ecosystem could give it an edge—especially for iPhone users who may prefer a foldable that fits seamlessly into their workflow, even if it comes with compromises like a noticeably smaller outer display or first-gen limitations.</p>

<p>Rumors suggest Apple’s foldable could feature a new hinge design built with liquid metal, with a focus on durability. While details are still scarce, we’ll likely learn more as the September 2026 launch window approaches.</p>

<p>After years of speculation and sideline watching, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a>’s foldable dream may be just around the corner. A new leak out of China adds more weight to the long-running rumors that Cupertino’s first folding phone, unofficially dubbed the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-fold/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone Fold</a>, could debut in 2026. And now, we may finally know what it’ll look like, at least in terms of screen size.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="800" height="450" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render.webp?x44794" alt="iPhone Fold render" class="wp-image-697384" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render.webp 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render-747x420.webp 747w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure></div>

<p>According to well-known leaker Digital Chat Station (via Weibo), Apple’s prototype foldable sports a 7.7-inch main display when unfolded and a 5.5-inch outer screen. That’s a little smaller than previous rumors, which pegged the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/18/everything-we-know-about-apples-first-foldable/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">main screen closer to 7.8 inches</a>, but it still falls neatly into tablet territory.</p>

<h2><strong>A foldable iPhone with an iPad-like experience</strong></h2>

<p>To put that in perspective, Samsung’s recent <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Z Fold 7</a> has an 8-inch inner screen and a 6.5-inch cover display. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-find-n5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oppo’s Find N5 </a>goes bigger with an 8.12-inch foldable screen.</p>

<p>So why is Apple dialing things down? The answer might lie in the shape. According to reports, the iPhone Fold will have a 4:3 aspect ratio, basically the same dimensions as an iPad mini. That could mean Apple is targeting a more practical, familiar experience rather than trying to compete with flashy, oversized foldable devices.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple iPhone Fold screen size leak" class="wp-image-698670" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Apple-iPhone-Fold-screen-size-leak-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure></div>

<p>There’s more. Digital Chat Station also noted that the prototype has gone through some slimming, aligning with earlier analysis from Apple tipster Ming-Chi Kuo. When folded, the device could measure between 9mm and 9.5mm thick, slightly chunkier than Samsung’s 8.9mm Fold but still surprisingly slim for a first-gen foldable.</p>

<p>What’s perhaps most Apple-like about all this is the rumored delay. The company is reportedly waiting until it can deliver a nearly crease-free display. We’re not sure when that will become reality, but the tipster suggests that Apple might launch its first foldable next year.</p>

<p>After years of speculation, leaks, and patent breadcrumbs, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a>’s long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone space finally feels within reach. While the company has remained characteristically silent, a growing body of reports from analysts, insiders, and the supply chain paints a surprisingly detailed picture of what could be Apple’s most radical iPhone yet: a foldable model set to debut in 2026. Here’s everything we know so far.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="800" height="450" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render.webp?x44794" alt="iPhone Fold render" class="wp-image-697384" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render.webp 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/iPhone-Fold-render-747x420.webp 747w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>Credit: macrumors</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3><strong>New Form Factor, Years in the Making</strong></h3>

<p>Apple has been tinkering with foldable tech behind closed doors for over a decade. Its first flexible-display patents date back to 2014. But unlike rivals who raced to be first, Apple has taken a more cautious approach, watching, learning, and waiting. The company is expected to debut its first foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026, and recent reports suggest the device has officially entered its New Product Introduction (NPI) phase at Foxconn. Mass production could begin as early as late Q3 2025.</p>

<p>According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s foldable will use a book-style design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series rather than a clamshell format. Unfolded, the phone will reportedly feature a 7.8-inch OLED display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, turning the device into something much closer to an iPad mini in your pocket.</p>

<h3><strong>No Crease, No Compromise?</strong></h3>

<p>Perhaps the boldest claim comes from multiple sources hinting at a “crease-free” foldable display, something no other brand has fully achieved. This will reportedly be made possible through Apple’s use of a metal support plate integrated beneath the display, designed to evenly distribute stress during folding and prevent visible creasing. That’s critical in a market where creases have become an unfortunate design concession.</p>

<p>Interestingly, Apple won’t be designing the display tech in-house. Instead, it’s partnering with Samsung Display, which is said to be setting up an exclusive production line for Apple at its A3 factory in South Korea. Samsung’s display arm will supply all 7-inch foldable OLED panels for the first-gen iPhone Fold, leveraging years of foldable R&amp;D.</p>

<h3><strong>Hardware: Thin, Titanium, and Touch ID</strong></h3>

<p>The foldable iPhone is expected to be a hardware marvel. It could measure just 4.5mm thick when unfolded, and between 9mm and 9.5mm when closed, thinner than many first-gen rivals. The chassis is rumored to be made from titanium, while the hinge may use liquid metal components for added strength and durability.</p>

<p>In terms of biometrics, Apple may ditch Face ID altogether on this model. Instead, Touch ID will likely return, integrated into the power button to save internal space, a move that echoes recent iPads. The camera setup will include dual rear lenses, with some reports suggesting 48MP sensors, and a single front-facing camera that may sit under the inner display.</p>

<h3><strong>New Display Partnership with a Familiar Twist</strong></h3>

<p>It’s rare for Apple to give up control over any core component, but it appears Samsung Display’s crease-free folding solution was too good to pass up. Apple reportedly prioritized yield stability over customization this time. According to Kuo, this also benefits Samsung’s hinge supplier, Fine M-Tec, which is expected to supply over 80% of the metal support plates.</p>

<p>Fine M-Tec is said to be using laser drilling to create microscopic stress-relief patterns in the hinge structure, further reducing the risk of screen damage. These plates alone could cost between $30–$35 per unit, reflecting the engineering complexity required to pull this off.</p>

<h3><strong>Pricing and Availability</strong></h3>

<p>According to analysts at UBS, the foldable iPhone could launch with a price tag between $1,800 and $2,000 in the U.S. That would make it the most expensive iPhone ever made, surpassing the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-16-pro-max-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 16 Pro Max</a> and entering direct competition with Samsung’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Z Fold 7</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/vivo-x-fold-5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vivo’s X Fold 5</a>.</p>

<p>Apple reportedly aims to ship between 10 million and 15 million units in the first year, though the actual number of devices sold could be lower due to production losses and repair stock requirements.</p>

<h3><strong>The Bigger Picture</strong></h3>

<p>Apple’s entry into foldables comes as the market itself grapples with stagnation. While companies like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Huawei</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/motorola/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Motorola</a> have pushed the envelope, foldables still represent a tiny fraction of global smartphone sales. Many users remain unconvinced, often citing durability, price, and practicality as barriers.</p>

<p>But this is Apple. When it enters a space, it tends to define it. A polished, crease-free, titanium-clad foldable iPhone might just be the catalyst needed to lift foldables out of the niche and into the mainstream. If all the pieces fall into place, 2026 could be the year that folding phones finally feel like they’ve arrived.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple&#8217;s</a> much-rumoured foldable iPhone appears to be moving closer to reality. As per analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has reached an important milestone in development and is preparing for the first stages of production. Kuo has shared new insights on when Apple could start making the device, its design, and expected volumes.</p>

<h3><strong>Production could start in late Q3 2025</strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Foldable-iPhone-render.jpg?x44794" alt="Foldable iPhone render" class="wp-image-681929" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Foldable-iPhone-render.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Foldable-iPhone-render-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Foldable-iPhone-render-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Foldable-iPhone-render-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Foldable-iPhone-render-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Fodlable iPhone mock render</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>According to Kuo, Apple’s supplier Foxconn is set to begin production of the foldable iPhone by late September or early October 2025. Apple is currently targeting a public launch in the fall of 2026, positioning the foldable device as part of its iPhone 18 lineup. Despite being just months away from production, several internal components, such as the hinge, are yet to be finalized—underscoring Apple’s efforts to ensure long-term durability.</p>

<p>One key part of the phone that has been locked in is the foldable display. Samsung Display will supply around 7 to 8 million panels, with the device offering a 5.5-inch screen when closed and a 7.8-inch screen when opened. The design will resemble the Galaxy Fold, with a book-style inward fold. Apple has reportedly engineered the hinge for minimal crease visibility and may include under-display cameras. Due to internal space limitations, the device might use Touch ID instead of Face ID. Thickness could be around 4.5mm when unfolded and 9–9.5mm when folded.</p>

<h3><strong>Limited rollout expected</strong></h3>

<p>Kuo expects the foldable iPhone to be priced between $2,000 and $2,500, placing it firmly in the ultra-premium category. Apple is believed to have ordered 15 to 20 million units, covering a projected 2- to 3-year lifecycle. This strategy suggests a limited, niche rollout rather than a mass-market push. Kuo also warns that Apple’s plans could still shift before the device enters mass production.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple</a> fans have long anticipated the launch of a foldable iPhone, and a recent leak from Digital Chat Station on Weibo suggests that Apple is actively testing a prototype. According to the source, the device could feature a compact outer screen and a moderately sized inner display, potentially making it one of the smallest foldable phones in its category.</p>

<h3><strong>Foldable iPhone’s screen sizes tipped</strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="971" height="185" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/image-67.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-673390" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/image-67.png 971w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/image-67-300x57.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/image-67-768x146.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/image-67-696x133.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 971px) 100vw, 971px" /></figure></div>

<p>Digital Chat Station revealed that the prototype being tested sports a 5.49-inch outer display and a 7.74-inch inner screen. If accurate, this would make Apple’s foldable iPhone notably smaller than competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which feature a larger cover and inner displays. The 7.74-inch inner screen would also position it as one of the most compact foldables in the “big fold” category, closer in size to the Oppo Find N2, which debuted in 2022 with a 5.54-inch cover screen and a 7.1-inch internal screen. However, it’s worth noting that these dimensions might not be final, as Apple is likely experimenting with multiple prototypes.</p>

<p>The leak aligns with earlier rumors suggesting Apple is working on a “book-style” foldable <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/12/04/apple-first-foldable-iphone-rumored-to-be-fold-and-not-flip/">rather than a clamshell design</a>. This approach would offer more utility, allowing users to switch between a smartphone and a tablet-like experience.</p>

<p>Apple’s focus on software optimization could also give it an edge, ensuring seamless app transitions across varying display sizes. However, challenges like eliminating visible creases and ensuring durability remain hurdles. While <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/02/09/apples-first-foldable-iphone-ipad-may-finally-launch-next-year/">a 2026 launc</a>h has been speculated, Apple’s meticulous approach means the final product could take longer to materialize.</p>

<h3><strong>Foldable iPhone Could Rescue Apple’s Sales Slump</strong></h3>

<p>According to Young, Apple’s first foldable iPhone is likely to feature a larger, book-style form factor akin to the Galaxy Z Fold series. This shift aligns with rising consumer interest in larger foldable devices, as seen in the growing popularity of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup.</p>

<p>The timing of Apple’s entry into the foldable market is critical. While the segment has experienced steady growth over the past few years, 2023 and 2024 have seen a slight slowdown. Apple’s arrival could breathe new life into the market, drawing in fresh users and spurring innovation.</p>

<p>A foldable iPhone with a larger form factor would allow Apple to showcase its design expertise and software optimization, potentially delivering a smoother user experience than current foldable offerings. The premium pricing of such a device could also significantly bolster Apple’s revenue and profitability.</p>

<p>Currently, the foldable market is dominated by Android manufacturers like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/oneplus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OnePlus</a>, and Huawei, all of whom have made strides in functionality. However, high prices remain a barrier to widespread adoption, contributing to the market’s recent stagnation.</p>

<p>Analysts project Apple’s entry could increase foldable market growth by 30%, followed by sustained annual growth of 20%. If executed well, Apple’s first foldable iPhone could redefine the category and push the industry into its next phase of evolution.</p>

<p>In the meantime, Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone 17 series in 2025, including the highly anticipated <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-17-air/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 17 Air</a>. Touted as the thinnest iPhone ever, this device is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/11/27/apple-iphone-17-air-explained/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">expected to set new benchmarks</a> for sleek and modern design.</p>

<p>The upcoming &#8220;iPhone Fold&#8221; (if that&#8217;s what Apple decides to name) will reportedly feature a 7.9-inch OLED display that folds outward, similar to the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-xs-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Huawei Mate Xs 2</a>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Huawei-Mate-Xs-2-1024x676.png?x44794" alt="" /><figcaption>Huawei Mate Xs 2</figcaption></figure></div>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Huawei</a> was one of the first companies to launch a foldable phone with an innovative wrap-around display. However, the company has since changed the design of its current generation of foldables to a book style with two displays—one on the cover and one on the inside.</p>

<p>The shift is likely due to concerns about screen durability, as the outward display will not be shielded when folded. This means users will need to handle such devices with extra caution. </p>

<p>That said, the outward-folding design does have advantages of its own. Since this design requires only a single large panel that can serve for both folded and unfolded situations, it makes the device thinner and lighter as there&#8217;s no need to fit in a second display. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Huawei-Mate-Xs-2-Harmony-OS-2.0-1024x571.png?x44794" alt="" /></figure></div>

<p>The outward-folding design also gives the phone a sleek look and lets you use the main camera setup even for selfies no matter if the device is folded or not. </p>

<p>Moving on, analyst Pu suggests a 2026 launch for the &#8220;iPhone Fold,&#8221; around the same time as the iPhone 18. In addition to the foldable iPhone, there are rumors of a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/05/24/foldable-macbook-2026-apple-reports/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MacBook with a foldable display</a> in the works. The device will reportedly have a 20.3-inch display and is set to go into mass production by the end of 2025, according to rumors. However, other reports suggest it won’t be launched until 2027.</p>
