We have been hearing about Xiaomi’s flip phone for the past few weeks, mainly through certifications and leaks.

But this weekend, we got our first glimpse at what could the Xiaomi Mix Flip.

The leaked image revealed the phone’s cover screen and a section above it housing the dual camera module flanked by two LED flashes. Notably, the module bears the Leica logo, suggesting a partnership between the two companies for the Mix Flip’s camera system.

More details are in our story here.

Huawei’s been busy lately with a bunch of launches for both international and Chinese markets.

The latest announcement from the company comes as it partners with OrangePi to release a Raspberry Pi alternative.

Huawei and OrangePi have joined forces to create the OrangePi Kunpeng Pro, a development board aimed at developers, students, and even consumers.

It’s a single-board computer, much like the Raspberry Pi, that comes with a mysterious quad-core 64-bit ARM processor and a dedicated AI processor.

Here are some more details.

Apple is reportedly close to bringing ChatGPT to iOS 18. This follows talks between the two companies, though specifics remain unclear.

Apple might also be discussing similar tieup with Google (Gemini). These rumors fit with Apple’s supposed plan for an AI App Store, offering smaller AI models on devices and outsourcing larger ones.

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) is nearly a month and a half way from today. The event usually focuses on the next-generation software across various products. This year, the iOS 18 is widely anticipated to be the centre of the event. Multiple rumours in the past have reported the upcoming software version to be loaded with AI features. This is because the Cupertino-based tech giant is lagging behind its competitors in the Gen AI space. Now, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is working on its own LLM to power on-device gen AI features on iPhones.

Apple working on its own LLM for on-device AI features

The main advantage of a large language model (LLM) is that the AI features run entirely locally on the device. Thus they don’t have to depend on cloud services to carry out the tasks. Additionally, the data also stays on the device. The processor along with a dedicated NPU powering the iPhones are capable of running LLMs. Due to this, the on-device gen AI features will offer faster response times and enhanced privacy compared to cloud-based solutions. The features can also work with a low network or none at all.

Previously, it was rumoured that Apple is working on its own large language model codenamed Ajax. The AI features are expected to be deeply integrated with apps like Health, Messages, Shortcuts, and more.

Gurman also reiterated past reports that Apple’s in-house LLM model may be limited to cloud-based LLM’s like ChatGPT and Gemini. The Cupertino-based giant might license the technology from third parties. The analyst previously stated that Apple is in talks with Google to license the latter’s Gemini AI on iPhones.

Apple recently sent critical security alerts to users in 92 countries, warning them of potential mercenary spyware attacks targeting their devices. The notification reads: “Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID.” This indicates a deliberate attempt to gain unauthorized access to your phone’s data.

The company stated that they have “high confidence” in this warning

Apple emphasizes the seriousness of these attacks, stating: “This attack is likely targeting you specifically because of who you are or what you do.” While the company can’t disclose specific details to avoid aiding attackers, they have “high confidence” in this warning.

This isn’t the first time Apple has issued such alerts. Since 2021, they’ve notified users in over 150 countries, including journalists and politicians in India last year. Unfortunately, the specific countries affected by this latest round of warnings haven’t been revealed.

Apple’s commitment to user security is evident in these proactive measures. If you received such a notification, take it seriously and consider strengthening your iPhone’s security measures.

Police in Northern Ireland shut down a major counterfeiting operation this week, seizing a haul of fake devices worth an estimated $750,000. The raids, conducted on Thursday, March 28th, targeted locations in Belfast and Portadown, netting over 20,000 counterfeit items.

Police in Northern Ireland captured over 20,000 counterfeit items.

While the exact breakdown of seized goods wasn’t revealed, photos from the scene suggest a significant portion were knock-off Apple products. Fake iPhones, AirPods, and iPhone cases were all present, alongside other unspecified counterfeit smartwatches, cellphones, and chargers.

This raid highlights the global reach of counterfeiting operations. While Apple products are often targeted, Detective Sergeant Mason of the PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) emphasized that “criminals will attempt to copy anything.” He further warned that such fake goods often fund organized crime.

The raids follow similar actions in England’s East Midlands region. Interestingly, a repair firm in that area was fined nearly $150,000 in 2021 for selling counterfeit Apple chargers.

While no direct charges related to counterfeiting have been made yet, a 24-year-old man was arrested following the Portadown raid, though reportedly on suspicion of immigration offenses.

As per Canalys report, the iPhone 14 Pro Max was the most-sold smartphone globally with 34 million units. The iPhone 15 Pro Max came close second with 33 million units after launching in September. The third spot was taken by the iPhone 14 with 29 million shipments. The iPhone 14 Pro and the two-year-old iPhone 13 bagged the fourth and fifth spots with 29 and 23 million units shipped respectively.

The top five devices sold last year came from Apple. The iPhone 15 Pro was seventh in the list selling 21 million units. The standard iPhone 15 rounded the list of top 10 with 17 million units. The iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 15 Plus are notable mentions missing from the list.

Only three phones from Samsung were among the top 10 selling smartphones last year. Notably, they belonged to the South Korean brand’s Galaxy A-series. These include the Galaxy A14 4G at sixth place with 21 million sales. The other two were the Galaxy A54 5G and Galaxy A14 5G at the eighth and ninth spots respectively.

No other brand including OnePlus, Xiaomi, Vivo etc made it to the list of most phones sold last year.

Apple is reportedly working on a technology to pre-update iPhones in-store before they even reach the consumer. This initiative is set to kick off before the end of the year, and it involves a specialized wireless pad that updates iPhone units without needing to open the box.

It’s still unclear if Apple will transfer this feature over to their carrier partners

According to industry insider Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is not just contemplating this as a futuristic idea, but is actively working to bring it to life. This system will utilize a proprietary pad to activate, update, and power down multiple iPhone units, all without removing them from their original packaging.

This move comes as a response to a common dilemma faced by smartphone users, particularly those who aren’t tech-savvy. Once a consumer purchases a new iPhone, it often requires an immediate software update to ensure optimal performance and security. Many first-time users may overlook this crucial step, thereby leaving their devices potentially vulnerable or not performing at their best.

The big question looming over this development is whether Apple will extend this feature to its carrier partners. The company hasn’t made it clear whether these advanced pads will be sent to other retail outlets that stock iPhones, leaving a gap in a universally streamlined consumer experience.

While Apple is the first to step into this territory, it remains to be seen how Android manufacturers will respond. Will they follow suit in providing a pre-updated experience, or is this a unique selling point that will set Apple apart in the competitive smartphone market? In the meantime, if you’re a new iPhone user, it’s always good to double-check for software updates. Just navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts.

In a recent move, Russian authorities have taken a significant step towards reducing their dependence on foreign-made technology by banning the use of Apple devices for official state purposes. As reported by the Financial Times, the country’s trade ministry implemented the prohibition on iPhones and all other Apple products for “work purposes” starting from Monday. This decision applies to government employees across various agencies, including Russia’s telecommunications and mass media ministry, with some agencies already enforcing the mandate while others plan to follow suit shortly. However, officials are still allowed to use Apple devices for personal use, as long as they avoid accessing work-related communication on them.

Apple has already stopped Apple Pay for Russian users

The ban comes in the wake of serious allegations made by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) in early June. The FSB claimed to have discovered a large-scale “spying operation by US intelligence agencies” involving Apple devices. According to the FSB, numerous iPhones, including those used by Russian diplomatic missions in NATO countries, were allegedly infected with monitoring software. Furthermore, the FSB accused Apple of collaborating closely with US signal intelligence to provide agents with an extensive range of control tools. Apple swiftly denied these allegations, emphasizing its commitment to user privacy and asserting that it has never cooperated with any government to create backdoors in its products.

This latest move by the Russian government also aligns with a broader effort to decrease reliance on foreign technology. In line with this objective, President Vladimir Putin issued a decree last year, mandating institutions involved in “critical information infrastructure” to transition to domestically developed software by 2025.

This ban follows a series of actions that have strained Apple’s relationship with Russia. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in the past year, Apple had already cut off access to Apple Pay and halted product sales in the country as a symbolic gesture of solidarity with those affected by the conflict.

As of now, Apple has not issued an official response to the ban. The decision marks a significant development in the ongoing tech tensions between Russia and the United States, potentially further splitting Russian government employees from the global technology ecosystem. The implications of this ban on bilateral tech relations remain to be seen as a public statement is awaited.

The European Union (EU) Council has approved new regulations mandating replaceable phone batteries. This decision follows the EU Parliament’s endorsement and aims to empower users by enabling easy battery replacements without specialized tools or knowledge. Once signed off by both the Parliament and Council, the rules will come into effect within 20 days of publication in the EU’s Official Journal. By 2027, all phones sold in EU member countries must have replaceable batteries.

Surprisingly, Apple may actually benefit from this new decision in the long run

Apple and other companies may find it challenging and costly to maintain permanent batteries only in EU countries. Apple had already introduced USB-C ports in response to an EU ruling, signaling its adaptability to regional regulations. The introduction of replaceable batteries offers convenience to consumers, allowing them to swap drained batteries for fully charged ones. Manufacturers have until 2027 to incorporate this feature.

The regulations also promote sustainability by fostering a circular economy through battery recycling and repurposing. They cover various battery types beyond smartphones, such as electric vehicle batteries and batteries for light means of transport.

For Apple, this shift may bring unexpected advantages, including new revenue streams from selling replacement and extended batteries. It also aligns with their vision of a port-less iPhone, as users could easily swap in a fully charged battery. The EU’s move toward replaceable batteries will reshape the mobile phone industry. It may prompt global manufacturers to reassess their design strategies to meet evolving consumer demands. Ultimately, the regulations highlight the EU’s commitment to sustainability and consumer empowerment.

Apple is one of the few trillion-dollar tech companies, so users can expect unparalleled customer service from them. The company has recently taken swift action to address a critical security vulnerability in its latest iOS and iPadOS releases. The tech giant released Rapid Security Response updates, specifically iOS 16.5.1 and iPadOS 16.5.1, to patch a WebKit vulnerability that is currently being actively exploited. Since WebKit is the browser engine used by Safari, it is crucial for users to install the updates immediately to ensure their devices are protected.

The new version aims to resolve the issues created by the 21 June update release

To install the updates, users simply need to follow the same process as a typical update. They can navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the instructions provided. The entire installation process should only take a few minutes, after which the device will restart.

These updates are listed as iOS 16.5.1 (a) and iPadOS 16.5.1 (a) to signify that they are distinct releases aimed at resolving issues with the previous versions that were launched on June 21st. Apple has acknowledged that the WebKit flaw could potentially allow attackers to execute arbitrary code by processing web content on targeted devices. While the company is aware of a report suggesting that the vulnerability might have been actively exploited, it is currently unclear whether any personal data has been compromised as a result.

In addition to iOS and iPadOS, Mac users running macOS Ventura 13.4.1 are also receiving a Rapid Security Response update to address the same Safari browser vulnerability. To install the update on a Mac, users should navigate to the Apple menu, select System Settings, click on General, and then proceed to Software Update.

This proactive approach by Apple ensures that critical security vulnerabilities are addressed promptly, safeguarding user data and maintaining the overall security of their devices. Users are strongly advised to prioritize installing these updates to mitigate any potential risks associated with the WebKit vulnerability.

In a recent development, Apple has acquired a new patent related to the hotel business, hinting at the company’s potential venture into the hospitality industry with a dedicated Hotel application for the iPhone and Apple Watch. The patent, disclosed by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO), outlines a range of features that could revolutionize the hotel experience for travellers.

The application would also help with taxi bookings and car rentals

According to information obtained from Apple’s patent description, the proposed Hotel app aims to enhance the convenience and efficiency of hotel stays. It envisions a comprehensive platform that allows users to make reservations, check-in, order room service, control room settings, access concierge services, and gather information about nearby attractions and shopping centres. Additionally, the app would facilitate check-out procedures and assist with transport-related arrangements such as taxi bookings or car rentals.

To deliver this seamless experience, Apple emphasizes the need for integration with various hotel systems. Users would interact with different devices throughout their stay. For instance, they might make reservations via phone, check-in at the front desk, use the TV’s menu to order entertainment options, and engage in face-to-face conversations with the concierge for local recommendations and guidance.

The envisioned Hotel app aims to connect iPhones and Apple Watches with hotel infrastructure, enabling direct access to ordering services, room controls, and other hotel amenities. Moreover, it would offer comprehensive information about nearby points of interest, shopping malls, and stores, serving as a one-stop solution for guests’ needs.

The patent sketches depict the app’s potential to tap into various aspects of room functionality, including lighting, temperature, audio and video settings, as well as bathtub controls. This level of integration and personalization could provide guests with unparalleled comfort and convenience during their hotel stay.

While it remains unclear when or if Apple will bring this Hotel app to market, the patent’s approval definitely highlights the company’s dedication to expanding its offerings. Should this technology become a reality, travellers might soon experience a new era of hotel stays, characterized by seamless digital experiences and personalized comfort at their fingertips. Another recent patent that Apple was recently working on was a flexible screen for the Apple Watch that can wrap around a wrist.

Foxconn, a prominent Apple supplier, has made a significant investment in India, with the construction of its first factory in the southern state of Telangana. The groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of a new era for the region, as the $500 million investment is expected to create 25,000 direct job opportunities. This move comes alongside Apple’s plans to establish its own manufacturing facility in Karnataka state, which is anticipated to generate approximately 100,000 jobs. These developments not only showcase Foxconn’s commitment to expanding its presence in India but also highlight Apple’s growing success in the Indian market, where it sold 6.7 million iPhones last year. The Apple iPhone 13 was the best-selling smartphone in India in Q4 2022 as well.

The Local Workforce will benefit from new employment opportunities

The IT minister of Telangana announced that Foxconn will invest $500 million in the region, emphasizing the positive impact on job creation. The investment signifies Foxconn’s confidence in the state’s conducive business environment and its commitment to contributing to India’s economic growth. The new factory will enhance the country’s manufacturing capabilities and attract further investments in the technology sector. With the creation of 25,000 jobs, the local workforce will benefit from increased employment opportunities and improved livelihoods.

Apple’s decision to establish a manufacturing facility in Karnataka showcases the company’s long-term vision for the Indian market. With plans to produce iPhones locally, the facility is expected to generate approximately 100,000 jobs. This move aligns with the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative, aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and employment. The expansion will not only help Apple meet the rising demand for its products in India but also foster technological innovation and skill development within the country.

The increasing sales figures of iPhones in India reflect Apple’s success in tapping into the country’s burgeoning market. Previously, Apple and Foxconn collaborated on a $200 Million Airpods Manufacturing Factory in India. With 6.7 million units of the iPhone sold last year, Apple has witnessed remarkable growth and consumer acceptance. The company’s focus on product affordability, localized marketing strategies, and improved distribution networks has played a vital role in capturing the Indian consumer’s attention. Additionally, Apple’s expansion into local manufacturing will further strengthen its position by reducing costs and ensuring a steady supply of products tailored to the Indian market.

Microsoft has unveiled a new feature for Windows 11 that will let iPhone users link their phones to their Windows PCs and access various features from their devices. The feature, let’s call it Phone Link for iPhones, is currently only available for preview under the Windows Insiders program.

Phone Link for iPhones on Windows 11

According to Microsoft, Phone Link works by installing a companion app on the iPhone that connects to the PC via Bluetooth. Once paired, users can see their phone’s notifications on their PC’s Action Center and manage them from there. They can also reply to text messages using the Phone Link app on their PC, which syncs with the Messages app on their iPhone. But it should be noted that Phone Link for iPhones does not support replying to group messages or sending media in messages.

However, it is not clear when Phone Link for iPhones will be available for all Windows 11 users or what other features it will offer. Microsoft says it is working on adding more functionality to Phone Link over time. For example, in Phone Link for Android phones, users can drag and drop photos from their phone to their PC using File Explorer or other apps.

Phone Link is one of the many new features that Microsoft has introduced with Windows 11, which launched in October 2021. The new operating system also features a redesigned Start menu that centers icons and shows recommended files and apps; a new Microsoft Store that offers more apps and games, including Android apps via the Amazon App Store; support for widgets that display personalized information; improved performance and security; and more.

Windows Insiders can try out Phone Link for iPhones by updating the Phone Link app to version 1.23012.169.0 or higher. To join Windows Insiders, users need to sign up with a Microsoft account and opt-in for preview builds in Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. Users should be aware that preview builds may have bugs or issues that affect their devices.

Phone Link is similar to Apple’s Continuity system, which lets users seamlessly switch between their Macs and iPhones. Continuity supports features like making phone calls, sending SMS messages, using apps like Safari or Notes, copying and pasting content, unlocking devices with Apple Watch, and more. However, Phone Link for iPhones does not support these features yet.

Phone Link is aimed at making it easier for both Android and iPhone users to work across their devices without having to switch back and forth between them. It also shows Microsoft’s efforts to make Windows 11 more compatible with different platforms and ecosystems. Whether Phone Link will be useful or popular among iPhone users remains to be seen.

Apple recently began rolling out the latest iOS 16.3 update to iPhones. In iOS 16, Apple has launched a redesigned lock screen for the iPhone that allows users to customise it with widgets, font styles, and even different wallpapers. The recent update, however, deleted the original iPhone wallpapers, and users who had one before applying the update were unable to change it. However, this has changed with iOS 16.3. That’s great news for users whose devices are receiving updates in the coming days.

Previously, if a user attempted to personalise the lock screen with a classic wallpaper that came with an earlier version of iOS, the system would alert the user that the lock screen couldn’t be customised and the user would have to choose a different wallpaper. With this change, iOS prompts the user to choose between adding a new wallpaper and customising the current one. Although Apple does not mention it in the iOS 16.3 release notes, the latest upgrade to the iPhone operating system allows users to put widgets on a classic wallpaper, but only if they still have it. The font style can also be changed.

The official notes say that “Customizing the current Lock Screen replaces the current Home Screen wallpaper. Adding a new wallpaper keeps the current wallpaper and creates an additional one.” Unfortunately, Apple still does not allow users to select from other classic wallpapers in iOS 16. And once you delete your classic wallpaper, it cannot be restored. The iOS 16 wallpapers are no longer static images due to the new lock screen, which includes animations and visuals that interact with the clock and widgets. They are instead rendered in real-time.

There are some internet workarounds that allow you to download the classic wallpaper from an older version of iOS for your device. However, that appears to be a workaround rather than an approved technique. Officially, those classic Apple wallpapers are no longer available, at least for the time being. So that was it for the latest wallpaper-related changes made in the iOS 16.3 Update. Please share your thoughts on this by leaving a comment in the space provided below. Thank you for sticking with me until the end.

Apple has achieved a new record in India, something no other brand has done before. The Cupertino-based tech giant has become the first company in the country to export smartphones worth $1 billion (~Rs 8,100 crore) in a single month. As per the data from Economic Times, Apple has achieved the export milestone in December 2022.

Apple and Samsung are major smartphone exporters from India. As per government officials, in November last year, the former had surpassed Samsung to become the number one exporter in the country. The Cupertino-based tech giant has three contract manufacturers in India namely Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron. The former two are located in Tamil Nadu whereas the latter is based in Karnataka. The company has been locally manufacturing the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus in the country. As per officials, some small manufacturers also export iPhones out of India.

Apple has been participating in the Indian government’s product-linked incentive (PLI) scheme since it was launched in April 2020. All three manufacturers are required to submit data on production, exports, investments, and jobs to the government as part of their participation in the PLI scheme. Apart from Apple’s export numbers, the data also revealed that December was a record month for the mobile phone industry with over Rs 10,000 crore in exports. Officials added that this would have been higher if Samsung’s facility was operating at full capacity instead of being closed for 10-15 days for maintenance.

The government estimates that India will export mobile phones worth around $9 billion in the fiscal year 2022 – 2023. The $1 billion exports benchmark set by iPhones in a month sets a leading example of the government’s ambitious PLI schemes.

Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, announced on Thursday that its Singapore company had paid $500 million for 4.08 million shares in Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Private Limited (~ INR 100 crore). The business is planning to boost the production of its Telangana plant in the country. This news came after the disputes happened over the Foxconn unit in China. Anyway, this would generate as many as 53,000 new employees and that could be great news for both the country and local people.

After Reuters reported last month that Foxconn, an Apple supplier, planned to quadruple the workforce at its iPhone factory in India over the course of two years, two government officials with knowledge of the matter pointed to a production adjustment as it faces disruptions in China as the reason behind the $500 million infusion into its India unit. According to insiders, Foxconn intends to hire 53,000 more workers over the next two years, bringing the total number of employees at its plant in southern India up to 70,000.

According to a government source, the company informed Tamil Nadu officials of its plans to step up hiring at the Indian facility as a result of disruptions in China. Meanwhile, a person in Taiwan with knowledge of the situation claimed that Foxconn was expanding its operations in India to boost its capacity for entry-level models and to satisfy Indian demand. Foxconn announced on Thursday that the factory had relaxed its “closed-loop” management limits. The company made headlines in recent weeks for implementing tight COVID-19 controls at its Zhengzhou production in China, which led to worker dissatisfaction.

By 2025, according to JPMorgan analysts, Apple may produce one out of every four iPhones in India as the tech giant shifts some of its manufacturing away from China due to rising geopolitical tensions and tight COVID-19 lockdowns in that nation. According to reports, Pegatron, a Taiwanese contract manufacturer for Apple, started building the new iPhone 14 in India last month. Both Foxconn and Pegatron manufacture Apple’s newest iPhone 14 in India; Foxconn started doing it in September.

A New York Apple iPhone reseller has suffered a huge loss after being robbed outside an Apple store in Manhattan, New York. The unnamed 27-year-old man purchased about 300 iPhone 13s from an Apple Store on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. He was attacked by two men just outside the Apple Store and dispossessed of a bag containing about 125 iPhones.

The robbery incident happened at about 1.45 am and was reported by the New York Police Department. Luckily, the man was not seriously injured during the mugging but was punched in the face. The two men who alighted from a car also left the scene in the same car. The victim is reported to be a regular buyer of large volumes of iPhones for his reselling business. The worth of the stolen iPhone 13s was put at $95,000. The investigation of the robbery incident is ongoing and the New York Police Department has not announced any arrests.

It is unclear under what circumstances the man chose to make the purchase at such an early hour. It is also not known whether Apple had CCTV footage of the mugging to aid the police investigation. Expectedly, the criminals will be caught with support from Apple to the Police. The Apple iPhone is one of the most sought-out and expensive smartphones. They come with extended features and great performance capabilities. This could be a factor fuelling robberies of such a nature.

Smartphones are built to withstand some moisture, however, most of them fail in conditions such as rain or even underwater. This makes it difficult for users to operate the device with wet fingers or on a wet display.

Apple’s patent suggests that future iPhones could adapt to moisture events by automatically adjusting the on-screen display, control buttons, and sensors. The pressure and moisture sensors will help detect and eliminate any false touches that may be triggered by liquid on the screen. The on-screen controls will be arranged accordingly by moving them apart, changing their size, or removing them.

Additionally, the iPhone’s capacitive display would change to a pressure-sensitive screen similar to the brand’s no longer used Force Touch and 3D Touch technologies. This means that a user will need to apply greater pressure than the predetermined threshold depending on the type of moisture event.

Apple’s patent document shows the iPhone’s camera app working in dry, wet, and underwater modes. Depending on the modes, changes are made to the camera UI. In the wet mode, some camera features are automatically removed from the UI so that they can’t be activated. On the other hand, in underwater mode, the buttons are extra large in size and without access to any other settings. The smartphone’s display will also show the current depth of the device to keep it within the limits of water resistance.

This is just a patent filing so readers must take this article with a grain of salt. Not every patented technology makes it to the final product. It also might take some time before we start seeing this feature in smartphones.

The legal claim by consumer rights advocate Justin Gutmann is worth £750 million ($927 million). Gutmann is seeking reimbursement for the over 25 million affected iPhone users in the United Kingdom. He claims Apple took a secret decision to slow down older iPhones in 2017.

Justin Gutmann stated that Apple made older iPhones to be slower in coping with software updates. An undocumented battery management update released in January 2017 led to the slow performance of older iPhones. This was to prevent the devices from shutting down without warning. Apple did not provide users with an option of disabling the battery management setting. In addition, the company did not warn users that their phones were being deliberately throttled. Gutmann alleged that the throttling was meant to mask the fact that the older iPhone batteries couldn’t cope with the new update demands.

Gutmann launched the claim against Apple at the Competition Appeals Tribunal. The claim, if successful, will cover the 25 million older iPhones in the UK that were affected. The affected phones included the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, and SE. Others were the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, and the iPhone X. Gutmann said Apple ought to have initiated a battery replacement program or admit that the update was unsuitable for older devices. Rather, the company allowed users to install the update knowing that it will worsen their device’s performance.

Gutmann says Apple was unethical in its approach to the issue as it ought to have come out clean to its customers. The concealment meant that some users experienced significant slowdowns in their devices. He says he was pursuing the case on behalf of millions of iPhone users across the UK. He also hopes that the case will spur dominant companies to review their business models and desist from such unwholesome conduct.

It was after a year that Apple had acknowledged the throttling issues. It claimed that the update was meant to address the problem of older phones shutting down. It claims it never set out to intentionally shorten the life of the affected phones. Apple continues to grapple with a litany of lawsuits challenging various aspects of its operations. This new lawsuit adds to the list. If successful, older iPhone users in the UK could get up to $30 from Apple.

A new Apple Support post indicates that Apple is warning users that high amplitude vibrations generated by high-powered engines of motorcycles could damage the cameras of iPhones. Sometimes the damage could be permanent, according to the post. Bike riders usually mount their expensive iPhones on their bikes as a navigational tool.

The iPhone camera’s optical image stabilizer (OIS) and closed-loop autofocus (AF), according to Apple, could be damaged by such excessive vibrations. All iPhone models since iPhone 7 have both the OIS and AF features, which can be damaged when the device is exposed to excessive vibrations. These vibrations only apply to high-powered motorcycle engines and not e-bikes and mopeds which can have vibration dampening mounts for the iPhone.

Apple’s advisory on the use of iPhones on motorcycles may pose some questions for users. However, it is suggested that if the aim is to use a GPS device on your motorcycle, then you can get alternative and cheaper devices to provide the needed navigation when using your motorbike. The costs of repair of damaged iPhones can be highly prohibitive, hence the need to avoid such expensive repairs.

A report today by Spanish tech site iPadizate, says five Amazon employees were arrested for stealing €500,000 (about $591,155) worth of iPhones from a logistics centre in the capital, Madrid. Among several incriminating items found on the five suspects were ten iPhones and a large cache of IMEI numbers (possibly stolen from phone boxes).

The suspects were uncovered by Amazon after launching an internal and covert operation after significant disparities were observed in the weights of several phone boxes. Hidden cameras at the logistics centre subsequently unmasked the culprits, who had replaced the phones in the boxes with other things.

One of the suspects voluntarily reported himself to police and another was arrested while still at work. The remaining three suspects were apprehended after leaving the logistics centre at the close of work. All five men have been relieved of their jobs by Amazon and would be put on trial shortly. Amazon’s internal investigation is still ongoing to determine whether there were collaborators still within and to also determine the full extent of items stolen.

The news was just a dent on Amazon who recently launched GameOn, a video-sharing platform for mobile Android gamers. The GameOn platform allows players to record and share exciting clips of their favourite games while also simultaneously recording their reactions via “Facecam” from the Android app.

Amazon has shown that it will continue to root out criminal elements while expecting continued patronage from consumers.

This has often been rebuffed by Apple. That is why there have been lots of headlines recently about the US government trying to convince companies such as Apple to hand over “backdoor” access to smartphone data of persons on trial for criminal offences.

It has now emerged that the government doesn’t need Apple’s help anymore, after all. A recent report carried by Vice as revealed that the government has been successfully cracking smartphone encryption especially on iPhones without Apple’s help. Interestingly, Android smartphones that were thought to have less secure encryption have been getting increasingly more difficult to crack.

According to Texas detective Rex Kiser, who conducts digital forensic examinations for the Fort Worth Police Department; “A year ago we couldn’t get into iPhones, but we could get into all the Androids. Now we can’t get into a lot of the Androids.”

Vice’s report also contains a claim that a US company called Cellebrite, which is usually hired by government agencies to crack smartphones, already has a tool that can crack iPhone encryption all the way up to the iPhone X. The report claims the tool can successfully give investigators access to data such as GPS records, messages, call logs, contacts, or even data from specific apps like Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and more, which can be used to prosecute criminals.

EDITOR’S PICK: Xiaomi’s Aqara officially unveils its range of smart home products in the US

However, the tool used by Cellebrite has reportedly not been very successful with Android encryption on a variety of handsets. For instance, the tool wasn’t able to extract any social media, internet browsing, or GPS data from devices like the Google Pixel 2, which features a tamper-resistant hardware security module, and the Samsung Galaxy S9. The report says the Huawei P20 Pro didn’t give access to any data at all which is pretty impressive. This may well support Huawei’s insistence that its phones don’t have a backdoor that can be accessed by the Chinese government.

However, do note that this report doesn’t mean your Android device is uncrackable despite the Cellebrite tool not working on some Android devices. Investigators can still extract needed data even on new phones like the iPhone 11 Pro Max but the process is a bit more labour-intensive and takes more time. However, if security and privacy are major concerns to you, then do note that there are better alternatives than the Apple iPhone.

While this would ensure Apple devices stay competitive, Samsung’s current manufacturing situation could have a greater role to play in this decision.

Most of Apple’s manufacturing is based in China. So a tariff on imports from China will adversely affect the Cupertino giant’s sales in the country. And with iPhones and Macbooks becoming costlier, other brands like Samsung would get an unfair advantage. That’s because Samsung has shifted most of its smartphone and device manufacturing outside of China, in huge factories based in countries like Vietnam and India. So if Apple was to bear the brunt of the recent China tariffs, iPhones would get a lot more expensive as compared to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy series in the U.S.

“The problem we have is you have Samsung, it’s a great company, but it’s a competitor of Apple. And it’s not fair because we have a trade deal, we made a great trade deal with South Korea. But we have to treat Apple in a somewhat similar basis as we treat Samsung,” Trump was quoted as saying by WSJ.

Trump made this statement during his visit to the new $1 billion, 133-acre campus in Austin, Texas that’s being constructed beside the already-functional Mac Pro production facility. The campus will house 5,000 employees when it opens in 2022, which can be further scaled to accommodate 15,000 employees in the future.

US President Donald Trump just days ago slammed a new 10% tariff on $300 billion worth of Chinese goods imported to the US. The new tariff saw Apple’s stocks fell by 2% over uncertainty, as the company produces all its products in China. The Cupertino-based company had previously stated that these types of taxes could affect the prices of all future products.

However, long-standing Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted that the US company already has plans on ground to absorb the extra expense. Thus, the new tariff regime won’t lead to a price increase for Apple products at least in the short to mid-term. This was contained in the analyst’s latest investor note which takes a look into Apple’s supply chain logistics and the consequences of the latest tariffs imposed on China by the Trump administration.

EDITOR’S PICK: Throwback Tech Thursday: We Revisit the Best Selling BlackBerry Curve Series

Further, Kuo thinks Apple will work to boost its non-Chinese production so it can match the demand of the US market thus avoiding the extra tariffs altogether. According to him, Apple’s advanced production automation coupled with the firm’s dominant market share in the US will help it stay afloat. The analyst gave predictions on all of Apple’s profitable product categories in the company’s portfolio. For the iPhone, he predicts that demand in the US will be fully met by its production facilities in India and Vietnam as early as next year. iPad demand will be met easier by the non-Chinese facilities thanks to its high degree of production automation.

The Mac line of products will take a longer period extending to 2021 before Apple’s production facilities outside China will be able to meet US demand. Apple’s AirPods and Apple Watch will be assembled in more production locations outside China heading forward so their market demand will also be met.

Things are starting to unravel as the start of the US trade ban on Huawei draws near. Production estimates published by Cowen shows that Apple is preparing to increase iPhone production in order to take advantage of the US-Huawei trade ban. However, the increase in production is going to be rather modest. Initially, Apple’s production estimate put iPhones shipment at 39 million units. However, that has been jacked up to 40 million. A breakdown shows Apple expects to ship about 30 million iPhone XS, XS Max and XR with the rest of the 10 million spread across iPhone 7 and iPhone 8. The increase is due to speculations that demand for the iPhone could increase in some markets following Huawei’s ban.

EDITOR’S PICK: blurams Home Pro Review: Small Size but Large Viewing Angle

The ban may not be very favourable to Apple entirely, though. Analysts warn that the US company faces big risks in medium-term because of the political instability between the US and China. Tariffs on some of the hardware manufactured in China may affect iPhone production and sales. In addition, Apple may not be the go-to guy for fans looking to switch from Huawei phones, if eventually Google complies with the US trade embargo. There are other alternative brands that won’t rip a hole in our pockets and yet deliver on quality, like OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO phones. Samsung may also be a beneficiary ahead of Apple.

But according to the known and respected analyst Horace Dediu, in an interview with Express.co.uk, the upcoming 2018 iPhone by Apple will not follow the new bandwagon. The flagships we are talking about are the new Vivo NEX and Oppo Find X. The first has a motorized front camera with an 8 MP resolution, while the second has a motorized part which reveals both the front camera and the dual rear cameras.

On the Oppo Find X, it is even mandatory to activate the motorized part in order to unlock the device without entering a password, as it does not feature a fingerprint scanner and it relies only on 3D facial recognition for authentication. According to the analyst, Apple iPhone will not adopt a similar solution and it will not have any motorized part. But the phone should still feature narrower bezels than the iPhone X. One of the reason because of Apple will not opt for motorized parts is the waterproof certification, as implementing such a technology would make impossible for its handsets to be waterproof.

Further, the analyst thinks that the future iPhones will ditch even the Lightning port. In such a case, wireless charging would be the only option for charging batteries and it will not be possible to use wired headphones anymore. Apple will release its next iPhones in September and the new line-up will be composed of three devices. The first will be the successor of the iPhone X with a 5.8-inch display, the second will have a 6.1-inch screen and the third will sport a 6.5-inch display. One of them has already appeared on Geekbench with a new SoC inside, 4 GB of RAM and iOS 12 installed.
