iQOO recently launched the Z9s and Z9s Pro in India, bringing two compelling mid-range devices to the market. While both smartphones pack impressive features, there’s a notable Rs. 5,000 price gap between them. For many users, this raises the question: is the extra investment in the iQOO Z9s Pro really worth it?

After diving into the specifications, performance metrics, and feature sets, it’s evident that the standard iQOO Z9s offers more value for money than its Pro counterpart. Let’s explore why.

Are the Chips That Different?

One of the most significant differences between the two models is the processor. The iQOO Z9s is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset, while the Z9s Pro features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC. On paper, this might seem like a major upgrade for the Pro variant. However, real-world usage tells a different story.

Both chips are built on a 4nm process, and the performance gap between them is relatively narrow for the average consumer. While the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC on the Z9s Pro might score higher on benchmarking platforms like AnTuTu, with claims of over 820k points, it doesn’t translate into a day-to-day performance that justifies a Rs. 5,000 premium.

For most users, tasks like browsing, streaming, and multitasking will feel almost identical on both devices. But if you are into gaming then of course 7 Gen 3 is a better choice here due to its far better GPU performance.

The Ultra-Wide Lens Trade-Off

Another point of differentiation is the camera setup. The iQOO Z9s Pro comes with an 8MP ultra-wide camera, while the Z9s opts for a 2MP depth sensor. The inclusion of an ultra-wide lens might appeal to photography enthusiasts, but for the average consumer, it’s not a game-changer.

The main camera on both devices is a 50MP Sony IMX882 sensor with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), which ensures excellent image quality regardless of which model you choose. Unless you frequently take ultra-wide shots, the Z9s will deliver very similar photo performance, making it the more practical choice for most users.

Charging Speed and Battery

The Z9s Pro supports 80W fast charging, while the standard Z9s comes with a 44W charger. Faster charging is undeniably convenient, but both phones are equipped with the same large 5500mAh battery. While the Z9s Pro will top up more quickly, the difference in real-world usage is marginal for most users.

For the typical user who charges their phone overnight or during downtime, the 44W fast charging on the iQOO Z9s is more than adequate. The Pro’s faster charging feature is a nice-to-have but not essential, especially when it comes with a hefty price tag.

Vegan Leather vs. Practical Aesthetics

The Z9s Pro offers a vegan leather finish in its Flamboyant Orange color, which might appeal to users who prioritize aesthetics and premium feel. However, the Z9s also has its own stylish options, including sleek designs like Titanium Matte and Onyx Green. While the Pro variant might stand out more due to its material choice, design preferences are subjective, and the standard Z9s offers enough variety to cater to most users.

The Z9s Hits the Sweet Spot

For a Rs. 5,000 price difference, the enhancements in the iQOO Z9s Pro, namely the ultra-wide camera, faster charging, and slightly different design, are not enough to justify the cost for the average consumer. The core performance, display quality, and battery life are nearly identical on both models, making the standard iQOO Z9s the more practical and value-driven choice.

In the end, the iQOO Z9s delivers a well-rounded experience that will meet the needs of most users without the additional premium. For those looking for a capable mid-range phone, the Z9s offers a balanced combination of features and performance, making it the smarter buy.

There is a possibility that the Z9s Pro could be a rebranded or tweaked version of the iQOO Z9 (China variant), which debuted in April of this year. It has a 6.78-inch display, an IP64-rated chassis, a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip, LPDDR4x RAM, UFS 2.2 storage, and a 6,000mAh battery with 80W fast charging support.

Shown above is the official image of the green variant of the iQOO Z9s. Unfortunately, the brand has not shared anything else about the device. As per reports, the device will also be available in a grey edition.

The iQOO Z9s reportedly features the same 50-megapixel Sony IMX882 main camera and the Dimensity 7300 chipset. There is a possibility the device may not feature an ultra-wide lens. The rest of its details are yet to be revealed.

iQOO is gearing up to launch the Z9s and Z9s Pro smartphones in India on August 21st. While full specifications haven’t been officially revealed, a report by GSMArena has revealed some key features of the upcoming mid-range devices.

According to iQOO, the Z9s series is designed for the busy lives of young adults – “primarily college students and young professionals who are balancing work/academics, social life, and extracurricular activities and their need for fast connectivity and seamless entertainment.”

The report suggests the Z9s Pro will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC, while the Z9s opt for the MediaTek Dimensity 7300.

Both phones will share a 50MP Sony IMX882 main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), 4K video recording capabilities, and Super Night Mode for low-light photography. AI features like AI Erase and AI Photo Enhance will also be present, with the Z9s Pro adding an 8MP ultrawide lens for capturing broader scenes.

Both the Z9s and Z9s Pro boast a slim profile at 7.49mm and utilize a 3D curved AMOLED display. However, there’s a significant difference in peak brightness – the Z9s reaches a respectable 1,800 nits, while the Z9s Pro boasts a much higher 4,500 nits for improved outdoor visibility.

When it comes to battery life, the Z9s Pro is said to pack a 5,500mAh battery, so you can expect a full day’s use on a single charge depending on usage patterns. Both phones will reportedly be manufactured in India at Vivo’s Greater Noida facility, aligning with the government’s “Make in India” initiative.

As for the price, both phones are expected to land under INR 25,000 (roughly USD 300 or EUR 275) in India. We’ll have to wait until the official launch for full details and confirmation on pricing.
