A statement by Meizu’s founder, Jack Wong (Huang Zhang) has revealed the Chinese smartphone company will take its time before releasing a 5G phone. Mr. Wong took to Weibo to explain why.

Based on a rough translation of the post, the former Meizu CEO said they will definitely release a 5G phone. However, he believes the first set of 5G phones can as well be termed test devices. The second gen models will bring key improvements over the first but the third generation 5G models are the ones the average user should look forward too as the technology would have matured then. This third generation 5G phones will likely include Meizu’s own phone(s).

Going by the above statement, the earliest time we expect to see a 5G phone from Meizu will probably be in 2021. That’s a long time in the mobile industry but let’s hope it is worth the wait.

Until now, the upcoming Meizu 16 line-up was expected to launch in August as per the company’s founder and CEO Jack Wong’s declarations. But now, the CEO has raised the hype to the sky with a new declaration.

Yesterday, the community told Jack Wong that it is cool if the company launches its new devices in mid-August as it would anticipate the arrival of the upcoming iPhones, Samsung and Huawei flagships. But Jack Wong has replied to this statement by saying that the Meizu 16 series will be launched as soon as possible.

RELATED: Meizu 16 Image Leak Shows A Full-Screen Display And Dual Rear Cameras

This means that it may come anytime, probably even before August. It has been confirmed that the Meizu 16 series will include at least one variant with the octa-core Snapdragon 845 SoC that is the best chipset by Qualcomm for mobile devices. We should also see variants with 6 and 8 GB of RAM depending on the chosen configuration. And we also expect to see a lower-end version with the Snapdragon 710 inside.

And it seems that the Chinese company has got this point as it seems that the upcoming Meizu 16 series will be sold at very competitive prices. After being asked by the Meizu community, the company’s CEO Jack Wong, also known as Huang Zhang, has finally said a few words about the price of the new flagship series.

He was asked if the maximum price of the most powerful variant of the line-up would exceed a price tag of 4000 Yuan: he implicitly said that 4000 Yuan will be enough to get a device from Meizu 16 series. At the actual change, 4000 Yuan roughly translates into $617 or €533 and that is an incredibly competitive price for a device like this. Note that the Meizu 16 series has already been confirmed to include a device with an octa-core Snapdragon 845 SoC: this chipset is considered the best in the Android industry, and it will be present on a device costing less than $650 in China.

Just to make an example, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in the configuration with 6 GB RAM costs 3299 Yuan, while OnePlus 6 in its 8/256 GB variant costs 3999 Yuan. But given that 4000 Yuan will be the price of the most powerful variant, the lower-end versions will cost less. So, the prices of Meizu 16 series will be very competitive and it may allow it to get an important slice of the Chinese flagship market. Meizu 16 is also tipped to come with an 18:9 display which will not embrace the notched design, as well as an in-display fingerprint reader allowing to minimize the bezels. The Meizu 16 will be official in August.

Founder and CEO of the Chinese manufacturer Jack Wong (Huang Zhang) took to Weibo to reveal the name of the phone by posting the picture of a phone’s retail box with Meizu 15 Plus inscribed on it.

The “Plus” in the name means there will most probably be a second variant called the Meizu 15.

The Meizu 15 and Meizu 15 Plus are expected to feature full-screen displays and may likely be the first from Meizu to do so. Meizu is more or less the only major Chinese manufacturer without a full-screen phone at the moment.

Meizu’s CEO said in a different post that manufacturing the phone is taking long, so it will be launched next year Spring (probably before or after the Spring Festival), which is around mid-February.

Meizu was founded in 2003 and began as a manufacturer of MP3 players before switching to MP4 players in 2006. It didn’t begin making smartphones until 2008. So not only is next year its 15th anniversary, it is also its 10th year anniversary as a smartphone manufacturer.
