Hence, it was chosen by Apple for its first OLED smartphone, the iPhone X. Since Samsung has reportedly earned huge profits by supplying OLED panels to Apple, other firms are also increasing the production of their OLED panels.

Apart from the recently launched iPhone X, all the iPhones that have launched so far feature LCD panels. Now that the Cupertino-based company has launched its first ever OLED panel, the rumor mill is speculating that it may release as many as release two OLED iPhones in 2018.

This could be the reason why manufacturers of OLED panels are looking forward to enter a deal with Apple. A report from the previous month had stated that Japan Display (JDI) that has been supplying LCD panels to Apple is looking forward to replace Samsung as the company’s OLED supplier through a $900 million deal.

BOE’s iPhone X-like OLED panel (Reference: Screenshot of China Daily’s YouTube)

Fresh information claims that China’s largest display manufacturer BOE is also planning to strike a deal with Apple. It will reportedly dedicate its B11 and B12 factory units for the manufacturing of OLED panels for the Cupertino company.

According to ET News, 70 percent of the OLED displays that will be manufactured at B11 will be flexible panels and the remaining 30 percent will be foldable panels. BOE will reportedly invest $7.04 billion into its B11 unit. The B12 line is expected to manufacture both kinds of display panels at 50:50 ratio. During a media event in the previous month, BOE had showcased its OLED panel placed inside iPhone X-like device.

LG is another major company that has recently turned its focus towards making small and mid-sized OLED panels. However, LG’s OLED panels available on Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have been criticized heavily by experts as these phones have encountered issues blue tint and screen burn-in. Japan Display and BOE may not be major threat for Samsung Display, but these companies can make it difficult for LG to secure a deal with Apple.

That tradition was abandoned with the announcement of the iPhone X which features an OLED display. The LCD panels used on previous iPhones, including the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is supplied by Japan Display Inc (JDI) but with a shift to OLED on the bezel-less iPhone X, Samsung became the supplier of the display panels used. A recent report carried by the Wall Street Journal shows that Samsung Display, a subsidiary of the conglomerate, earns around $110 for each iPhone X unit sold. With an estimated gross sale of 130 million units of iPhone X until the summer of 2019, the Korean tech giant is said to potentially earn more from the Apple flagship than from its own flagships. Counterpoint Market Research estimates that Sammy could make up to $14.3 billion from iPhone X sales in the first 20 months of sales alone.

Apple happens to be JDI’s largest cash cow, especially in an era when LCD displays are giving way to OLED on most flagships. Thus, JDI is reportedly looking to secure a $900 million investment for a new method for producing OLED which perhaps will be faster and more efficient. In an era where the market demand for OLED screens is continuing to skyrocket, this might be the right move to make in order for the company to maintain its profitability. According to a report on Reuters, JDI’s affiliate JOLED has already approached a number of investors in a bid to raise $900 million to develop new technology for OLED mass-production. Further details are still sketchy as at this moment.

Read More: Samsung to Make Huge Revenue through iPhone X than its Own Flagship Phone

Apart from Japan Display, LG is also mapping out a similar strategy to manufacture smaller -sized OLED panels. Presently, Samsung seems to enjoy a near monopoly in the aspect of small- and mid-sized OLED panels right now. Samsung Displays supplies OLEDs for its Galaxy models as well as its LED TVs. The company also suppliers the panels to other companies, of which Apple recently joined its client base. Mass producing OLED panels comes with its high costs, especially at the initial stage. Initial costs are said to be high to implement the necessary technologies for high yield rates and colour-accurate panels but demand for OLED is expected to continue to rise right through to the near future. It may take a couple of years, and huge investments for JDI or LG to catch up with Samsung. But if Japan Display succeeds eventually, it may not be difficult snatching Apple from Samsung considering their fierce rivalry.

However, a recent report had revealed that the Japanese tech giant will be launching its forthcoming smartphones with new design. Since the information had surfaced from a forum post, it could not be fully trusted. Today, the managing director of Sony, Kenichiro Hibi has confirmed that the Sony will be “soon” adopting a new design for its next-generation smartphones.

Sony has released its new smartphones, the Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ Premium with thick bezels above and below the screen when other smartphone OEMs such as Samsung, LG and Apple have launched premium phones with full screen design. Hibi said that in order to stay competitive in the premium smartphone market, Sony will be launching forthcoming smartphones with new design language. The OmniBalance design will continue to exist as long as X series smartphones are available in the market.

Read More: New Sony Phablet Spotted on GFXBench Database

A leaked information that had surfaced in the previous week had revealed that the new design concept that Sony will be using on its next-generation phones is called Mirai. Since the rivaling brands are launching phones with elongated display and bezel-less design, it is likely that the 2018 smartphones from the company may feature a full screen design. However, Hibi refrained from sharing any information on the forthcoming phones.

In April, Japan Display had launched a new 18:9 Full Active LCD panel. Since Sony is known for using display panels from Japan Display, the company launch 2018 Xperia phones with Full Active display.

He stated that the Sony will focus on launching high-end smartphones in India. The company will also continue to release mid-range smartphones priced above Rs. 20,000 (~$305) to survive in a highly competitive market like India. Sony has recently released the Xperia XA1 Plus with a pricing of Rs. 24,990 (~$380).

Even though the Sony Xperia XZ1 smartphone has released with flagship specifications, the company has dubbed at it as “mass-market flagship.” Hence, it is priced less than the competitor smartphones. The XZ1 has arrived in India with a price tag of Rs. 44,990 (~$684) and the Xperia XZ Premium is available for Rs. 60,000 (~$913).

Sony is known for announcing at Mobile World Congress around in February and at IFA expo in September. It is likely that the Japanese tech giant may unveil bezel-less smartphones at the upcoming 2018 Mobile World Congress event.

After the launch of Xperia Z2 in 2014, Sony was expected to stop making smartphones with OmniBalance design. However, the Japanese company continued to stick to its old design. The recently launched Sony Xperia XZ1 flagship phone also sports the same design. New information suggests that Sony may introduce a smartphone with newn design at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 which indicates that the company would finally bid goodbye to OmniBalance design.

An industry insider had revealed in the previous week that Sony will be introducing a new design concept dubbed as Mirai on its smartphones that will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018. Since Mirai is a Japanese word for “future,” the leaked information hints that the 2017 Sony Xperia smartphones will sport a futuristic design. However, there is no information available on what sort of design Sony’s Mirai concept will carry.

This year several flagship and high-end smartphones have launched with full screen design such a LG G6, Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy Note 8, LG V30, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 and Apple iPhone X. It appears that Sony may also switch to full screen design as previous reports have revealed that it is working on a bezel-less smartphone.

Sony Xperia X Ultra is a rumored phablet from the company that is expected to house a 6.45-inch Ultra-Wide display. It is expected to deliver an aspect ratio of 21:9. The rumor mill has revealed that the smartphone is driven by Snapdragon 660 chipset. Other speculated features of the Xperia X Ultra include 4 GB of RAM, Android 7.0 Nougat, 19-megapixel rear camera, 13-megapixel front camera, IP68 certified chassis and 3,050mAh battery with fast charging capabilities.

Moreover, at the end of April, Japan Display had unveiled its 6-inch Full Active LCD panel that offers an aspect ratio of 18:9. Since it is a water-resistant display, it can be used with wet fingers. As Sony is known for using LCD panels made by Japan Display, speculations are rife that some of the 2018 Sony Xperia smartphones may feature Full Active panel from Japan Display.

We advise our readers to take this report with a grain of salt as there is no concrete evidence to prove that Sony will quit making phones with OmniBalance design from next year.

The display is officially named as “Full Active” LCD screen.

The Full Active display offers a resolution of 1,080 x 2,160 pixels. It will be coming with thin bezels on the left and right sides. Moreover, since it incorporates a new high density writing, the bottom bezel of the Full Active display will be as thin as side bezels. Below is the official image that shows that the screen is flanked with very slim bezels on all four sides

Read More: Japan Display Confirms Building Flexible Screen; Hints 2017 iPhone to Feature Dual-Edge Curved Screen

The 2nd gen Pixel Eyes technology makes it possible for the display to deliver deep black colors. Another awesome feature of the display is that users with wet fingers will have no trouble in navigating across the screen. It is a vital feature for smartphones that come with water resistant capabilities.

There are three companies that are known for using JDI display such as Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba. However, among the smartphone OEMs, Sony is known for using LCD panels from JDI. Hence, it seems that in the near future, we may see a Sony Xperia flagship featuring the new Full Active display from JDI. LG and Samsung have already pushed the limits by launching 18:9 (or 18.5:9 on Galaxy S8 duo) aspect ratio smartphones this year. Hence, other companies are expected to follow this trend later this year and in 2018.

At the end of the previous month, Sony had confirmed that it would be introducing two flagship phones by the end of 2017. Previous leaks have revealed that the Xperia XZ1 could be the Snapdragon 835 driven upcoming flagship phone from the company. It is expected to come with a 5.2-inch full HD screen.

There is no information on the other flagship phone. There is a possibility that Sony may introduced a new flagship phablet featuring the Full Active module from JDI. Neither JDI nor Sony has officially confirmed on using the Full Active panel on the upcoming Sony flagship. Interestingly, Sony is rumored to be working on a Xperia X Ultra that is expected to come with a 6.45-inch ultra-wide screen. It is pegged to deliver an aspect ratio of 21:9 and will be fueled by Snapdragon 660 chipset.

There is a report from the Chinese source that the Innolux, LG and Japan Display Corporation to produce the upcoming iPhone 6 screen display.

As we are know, Innolux is a Taiwanese based company that is one of the largest display manufacturer in the world, Inolux has been manufacture for television (Chimei), touch screen display, laptop screen, smartphones and so on.

Innolux is also used by Apple, before they produce display panels for the iPad 2 and 3. Why Apple chose Innolux rather than Samsung and Sharp, there are two reasons: It is clear as chills relationship between Apple and Samsung in court. While Sharp can not pass the quality tests from Apple.

According to recent rumors, the iPhone 6 screen will have a width of 4.7 inches, with a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels (as same as with the iPhone 5) , while the 5.5 -inch screen Apple will use for their phablet with a resolution of 1740 x 960 pixels. Apple is known to have its own ideals in the competitive smartphone industry.
