Apple launched its new iPhone SE budget smartphone last month after years of leaks and rumours and the device is now available for purchase. Weeks after the phone’s launch, details about its components have surfaced online.

According to a report coming from Korea, Japan-based JDI has been picked by Apple to be the sole supplier of display panels for the new iPhone SE, at least for the initial batch. The report further adds that Sharp will join the list of suppliers at a later stage.

For those who are unaware, JDI and Sharp were the suppliers of the 4-inch display panel used in the earlier iPhone SE model. This time, for the iPhone SE 2020 model, LG Display was in the race to supply displays and also underwent the final round of testing.

The development for Japan Display Incorporated (JDI) comes at a time when the company is struggling and Apple reportedly pumped-in the much-needed cash of around $200 million last year in a bid to prevent the display maker from shutting down.

It is said that the company is now looking to sell off assents, including a production facility in Hakusan area and Apple will be buying a part of that facility. Apple’s decision to aware display contract for the new iPhone SE to JDI could be a part of its plan to help the Japanese company.

However, for the upcoming iPhone 12 series smartphones, Apple seems to have picked up China-based BOE for the OLED panels because of its in-display fingerprint sensor technology. For the upcoming 5G iPhone 12, the in-display fingerprint sensor is said to be vital to have some of the modern and trendy features.

In line with this, BOE is launching OLED production lines which will essentially boost the company’s manufacturing capacity by more than 200 percent. The company has heavily invested in three OLED production lines in China and will manufacture the sixth generation of AMOLED displays with a plan to soon reach a full production capacity of manufacturing 48,000 units every month.

Coming to the Apple iPhone 12, the phone will be powered by Apple A14 chipset manufactured by TSMC using 5nm node and will come with support for 5G. However, there are reports claiming that the company could delay the launch of iPhone 12 series as it faces supply issues because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Japan Display Incorporated (JDI) has been the major supplier of LCD panels to Apple. But the Silicon Valley company’s shift to OLED panel beginning with the iPhone X unsettled JDI’s finances. Although Apple still uses JDI’s LCD displays on the iPhone 11, the orders are short of what it used to be and just won’t be enough to prevent the company from going down. Perhaps, in a bid to prevent the Japanese display maker from closing down, Apple is said to have concluded plans to pump in much-needed cash.

Japan Display has disclosed that a major client intends to invest $200 million, double the amount it originally planned to invest in the Japanese company. This was hinted by the company’s CEO Minoru Kikuoka who expects the deal to be completed this month. Although the “major client” wasn’t named, sources with direct knowledge of the talks have said it is Apple. The CEO also disclosed that Hong Kong-based Oasis Management will also contribute $150-180 million.

JDI’s collapse would hamper Apple’s ability to deliver competitive pricing for its new iPhone 11 base model which comes $50 cheaper than last year’s base model – iPhone XR. The collapse may also force the Apple to turn to rival suppliers for liquid crystal displays (LCD) as well as increase its reliance on Samsung Display for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens as JDI isn’t even planning a transition to OLED manufacture just yet.

Come tomorrow, January 24, Vivo will launch the first commercially available smartphone with an in-built fingerprint sensor. Other manufacturers will follow suit and that will most probably be the trend for this year.

While Vivo’s X20 Plus UD uses a Synaptics’s sensor that is placed between the glass panel and OLED panel, Japan Display Inc. commonly referred to as JDI has a different approach.

This is the company’s first fingerprint sensor by the way, since they are naturally into display manufacturing. However, the display does play an important part in the way the scanner works.

Unlike traditional fingerprint sensors that are made of silicon and are not transparent, JDI’s sensor is made of a transparent material. It uses JDI’s Pixel Eyes technology which allows the sensor to be built right into the glass substrate of the LCD panel.

The technology has been perfected such that it can even detect the changes in capacitance caused by the recesses and ridges of one’s fingerprints when the finger touches the display.

JDI’s current sensor measures 8.0mm x 8.0mm but the company says it plans to develop larger as well as smaller sensors that will work with a variety of devices.

The Japan-based manufacturer says shipping in commercial quantities should begin within the 2018 fiscal year which ends March 2019. Chances are we won’t see it appear in devices until next year.

One key advantage JDI’s technology has over that of Synaptics is that it works with LCD displays unlike the latter which works only with OLED displays.It is safe to say JDI’s technology will not be limited to only flagship devices but also mid-range or even entry-level phones.

Apple had traditional stuck with LCD panels over the years since the debut of the iPhone. That tradition was abandoned with the announcement of the iPhone X which features an OLED display. The LCD panels used on previous iPhones, including the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is supplied by Japan Display Inc (JDI) but with a shift to OLED on the bezel-less iPhone X, Samsung became the supplier of the display panels used. A recent report carried by the Wall Street Journal shows that Samsung Display, a subsidiary of the conglomerate, earns around $110 for each iPhone X unit sold. With an estimated gross sale of  130 million units of iPhone X until the summer of 2019, the Korean tech giant is said to potentially earn more from the Apple flagship than from its own flagships. Counterpoint Market Research estimates that Sammy could make up to $14.3 billion from iPhone X sales in the first 20 months of sales alone.

Apple happens to be JDI’s largest cash cow, especially in an era when LCD displays are giving way to OLED on most flagships. Thus, JDI is reportedly looking to secure a $900 million investment for a new method for producing OLED which perhaps will be faster and more efficient. In an era where the market demand for OLED screens is continuing to skyrocket, this might be the right move to make in order for the company to maintain its profitability. According to a report on Reuters, JDI’s affiliate JOLED has already approached a number of investors in a bid to raise $900 million to develop new technology for OLED mass-production. Further details are still sketchy as at this moment.

A new rumour emanating from China has hinted that Sony is likely to launch a bezel-less smartphone at IFA Berlin 2017. Sony announced the Xperia XZ Premium at MWC 2017 with a nearly bezel-less design with bezels at the top and bottom but the new flagship which is said to launch at IFA will come with a large bezel-less display.

The Weibo post referred to JDI’s announcement earlier in June that they have started the mass production of their Full Active display technology. JDI was formed in 2012 through the consolidation of the display panel businesses of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba and had announced the Full Active LCD display technology last year which would bring completely bezel-less displays to smartphones. As a result of the mass production, it is safe to say Sony is preparing something big sometime soon since it is the most active in the smartphone industry of the three which formed JDI.

JDI has struggled in recent times due to the proliferation of LCD manufacturers in China and the shift to OLED displays spearheaded by Samsung’s AMOLED panels which seem to achieve better resolutions than LCDs. But the recent technology uses a 6-inch display and an aspect ratio of 18:9 which would place it higher than the Mi Mix in terms of screen-to-body ratio.

As exciting as this may sound, you should take it with a pinch of salt as nothing in respect to a Sony IFA 2017 launch is confirmed yet. It may turn out to be true anyway, as bezel-less smartphones seem to be the way to go presently. We have got lots of them tipped to be in the works, like the iPhoen 8, Galaxy Note 8, Mi Mix 2 and a host of others. So, it makes perfect sense if Sony decides to release their own, using JDI’s latest LCD display technology.

Japan Display (JDI) has officially confirmed that it has begun the mass production of 6-inch LCD panels that offers 18:9 aspect ratio. The display is officially named as “Full Active” LCD screen.

The Full Active display offers a resolution of 1,080 x 2,160 pixels. It will be coming with thin bezels on the left and right sides. Moreover, since it incorporates a new high density writing, the bottom bezel of the Full Active display will be as thin as side bezels. The 2^nd gen Pixel Eyes technology makes it possible for the display to deliver deep black colors. Another awesome feature of the display is that users with wet fingers will have no trouble in navigating across the screen. It is a vital feature for smartphones that come with water resistant capabilities.

There are three companies that are known for using JDI display such as Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba. However, among the smartphone OEMs, Sony is known for using LCD panels from JDI. Hence, it seems that in the near future, we may see a Sony Xperia flagship featuring the new Full Active display from JDI. LG and Samsung have already pushed the limits by launching 18:9 (or 18.5:9 on Galaxy S8 duo) aspect ratio smartphones this year. Hence, other companies are expected to follow this trend later this year and in 2018.

At the end of the previous month, Sony had confirmed that it would be introducing two flagship phones by the end of 2017. Previous leaks have revealed that the Xperia XZ1 could be the Snapdragon 835 driven upcoming flagship phone from the company. It is expected to come with a 5.2-inch full HD screen.

There is no information on the other flagship phone. There is a possibility that Sony may introduced a new flagship phablet featuring the Full Active module from JDI.  Neither JDI nor Sony has officially confirmed on using the Full Active panel on the upcoming Sony flagship.  Interestingly, Sony is rumored to be working on a Xperia X Ultra that is expected to come with a 6.45-inch ultra-wide screen. It is pegged to deliver an aspect ratio of 21:9 and will be fueled by Snapdragon 660 chipset.

Japan Display Incorporated (JDI) is one of the big names in display manufacturing. The last we heard from the company was that they had unveiled a dual-panel foldable display. However, it seems they have been working on other projects as news has it that they just announced a dedicated VR display.

The LTPS TFT-LCD display has a screen size of 3.42-inches with a pixel density of 651ppi and will be used in VR glasses. It will solve the grainy image issue plaguing current VR display and the fact that it uses Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon Thin Film Transistor Technology allows it to have such a high resolution.

The display also has a high refresh rate of 90Hz and a liquid crystal response speed of just 3ms. It also has an improved animation mode which results in clearer images.

There is no news of when the display will be commercially available but JDI has started shipping samples to developers. Chances are that we might get to see them in VR glasses released in 2017.

Latest news from Japan indicates that Japan Displays Inc. (JDI) has developed an off-screen LCD display for smartphones which combines two panels and can open and close like a book or a photo album.

According to Japanese website Nikkei, the display comes with ultra-slim bezels and the width can be controlled below 1mm. The display can even get more than two, as up to three panels can be designed together with a distance of 2mm or less between the panels. another thing is the display seems to be removable.

It is also said that the displays can be connected into a screen and is ideal for multitasking, like watching a video and browsing at the same time. The good thing is, this design will start finding its way into smartphones from summer of 2017. It is reported that JDI will be working in partnership with Chinese smartphone manufacturers to jointly develop new terminals. We don’t know yet which Chinese phone maker they are in talks with at present but we’ll keep you informed as new details unfold.

The Huawei Mate 9 launch event is happening next week and the rumours and leaks have hinted that we will be getting a curved screen variant as well. However, a post on Weibo by an analyst detailing the suppliers of the displays and their sizes appears to indicate that there will be no curved screen variant.

Sun Changxu says the Huawei Mate 9 will have a 5.88-inch Full HD LCD display supplied by JDI and LG. He also mentions that another screen, OLED to be specific, and with a 5.5” size will be supplied by Samsung. There is no mention of a supplier for a curved display fitting the screen size of the Mate 9 and the 5.5” OLED display is rumoured to be for the Mate S2 which we have not heard any details about.

So where did all the curved-display rumour come from? We’ll have to wait for the launch event to confirm if it has indeed been cancelled.

Renders of the curved variant, called the Mate 9 Pro have been ridiculed for looking like a Galaxy Note 7 rip off. But the Galaxy Note 7 is resting in peace now, so if another company decides to make something similar that doesn’t explode, shouldn’t we all be happy?

Japan Display Inc. (JDI) yesterday announced the development of a new LCD display which it calls “Full Active” LCD Display (XO) which features ultra-slim design bezels on all four sides of the screen. The new “Full Active” display has found its first introduction in a 5.5-inch Full HD LCD display for smartphone devices.

The new display type was manufactured by adopting a new high-density wiring schematics and with the use of new processing and module assembly technologies. These all combine to create a slim display which requires less bezels, since the control units are small. The current range of LCD panels usually feature larger bezels at the top or bottom which houses the electronic and lighting control units.

JDI claims the newly designed LCD module structure will allow the size of a smartphone to be as slim as the display size and this could launch a whole new design pattern in smartphones. Already plans are underway to commence mass production of the display by the end of March 2017, so we could be seeing smartphones sporting this new display technology as early as next year. Apart from smartphones, JDI hopes to develop LCDs for various display sporting smart gadgets with this new technology.

JDI is a four-year-old company formed in 2012 through the consolidation of the display panel businesses of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba. The company has grown to become a leading global manufacturer of advanced small and medium sized LTPS LCD panels. JDI’s displays can be found in smartphones, tablets, automotive electronics, digital cameras, medical equipment and other electronic devices.
