On Monday, Foxconn revealed that they have entered into a Joint-venture, with Vedanta holding the majority share of the equity. Foxconn further informed that Anil Agarwal, the founder, and chairman of Vedanta Resources Limited will also be the chairman of the joint venture company. The name of the joint venture company has not been made public yet, along with what kind of semiconductors the newly-formed company plans to manufacture.

Foxconn has mentioned that discussions are underway with various state governments regarding where the fab will be set up by the company. Nevertheless, the new venture is sure to create multiple jobs opportunities in the country.

The new joint venture between Vedanta and Foxconn is a result of the recently announced Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for electronics manufacturing by the Indian government. The scheme provides many benefits to foreign companies who choose to set up their manufacturing units in the country and also fulfills the government’s “Make in India” agenda.

According to a 163News report, the company seeks to expand into the semiconductor industry and has even proposed a registered capital of 1 billion Yuan (roughly 154 million US Dollars), out of which, TCL Technology would invest 500 million Yuan (roughly 77 million US Dollars) or 50 percent of the registered capital. Although, the semiconductor field is known to be quite difficult to enter into, considering the huge costs during establishment and further development as well.

So, it remains to be seen how the company manages to compete with the various rivals in the industry. As per the official announcement, TCL Semiconductor will serve as the company’s semiconductor unit, which will focus on industrial development opportunities in the field of integrated circuit chip design and other semiconductor powered devices. The tech giant also specifically mentioned that the unit will focus on the fabless models in the field of integrated circuit chip design.

Furthermore, it aims to have its chip have application in various upstream and downstream related industries like driver chips, AI voice related chips, and more. The company even hopes to expand its production capacity to a level where it can make core components for various devices. Notably, the move from TCL does not arrive out of a whim based on recent demand, since the company has been showing interest in the field since 2018. So stay tuned for more updates regarding the matter.

According to a TelecomNews report, the Chinese tech giant is willing to bring 5G equipment manufacturing to India, alongside another Indian company. For those unaware, Huawei is a major telecom equipment maker, and one of the leaders in 5G networking. Thus, the company’s official even asked the Indian government to provide a “level playing field.”

As per Huawei India CEO, David Li, “We are now very much open and willing to partner with a local company. We are looking for a local partner and for commercial reasons, we don’t want to disclose any details. We can bring our software or hardware modules and enable a (local) partner to manufacture equipment.” Furthermore, the senior executive also asked the Indian government to clear the uncertainty regarding Huawei’s participation in the 5G trials.

Li has called on the Indian government to clear the uncertainty regarding the company’s participation in the region, asking the government to consider its “clean” record of the last 20 years in the country. He further added that “It is uncertain now… The government wants to address security concerns, but that should be based on facts and global standards. We hope the Indian government will give us a level playing field to participate in the (5G) trials.”

However, it seems that the electronics company isn’t solely based around smartphones as it is forming a joint venture with Fiat Chrysler (the automobile giant) to build electric cars in China.

Foxconn is one of the world’s largest contract smartphone manufacturer with notable clients like Apple

The filing of this sizable undertaking has been filed in China’s Market Observation Post System (MOPS), which details that both companies own 50 percent of the venture equally. The main objective of this joint venture is to produce electric vehicles in China and start an IOV. This stands for Internet of Vehicles (after IoT or Internet of Things devices) as coined by the Foxconn’s parent company.

Editor’s Pick: Honor V30 Pro scores the second highest DxOMark rating ever, with 122 points

Initially, Fiat Chrysler and Foxconn will aim to mass produce electric vehicles in China and will expand to foreign markets after the foundation is laid in the Southeast Asian country. This seems like a very practical move from an automobile industry standpoint as China is the largest electric vehicle market in the world. Notably, the filing also states that the joint venture aims to develop electric vehicles from scratch. In other words, they are not planning on simply making the existing Fiat offerings into electric versions.

The collaboration with Foxconn will also help Fiat gain a solid footing in the Chinese market. Previously, the contract smartphone manufacturer has invested in ventures dealing with electric vehicles, but this will be the first as the company will actually develop and manufacture its own products. A good example of past investment is Byton, an electric vehicle startup. This began as the Future Mobility Corporation, which was a joint venture between Harmony Auto, Foxconn, Tencent and now even Xiaomi as a strategic investor.
