When it comes to Apple products, design is as important a factor as hardware. The company is usually positions its products as desired objects, making it easy to sell anything at a high price. The name behind this success was Jonathan Paul Ive. He was the chief designer at Apple from 1996 until 2019. Apple’s iPhone Designer Joins Jony Ive and Sam Altman for AI Hardware Project

According to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Tang Tan, who was appointed as Apple’s new chief designer, has resigned. While the reason for the resignation remains unclear, Tan’s next destination is reportedly LoveFrom. LoveFrom is a design firm founded by Jony Ive, the legendary designer of Apple that we mentioned above. Apparently, Tan will be involved as a hardware designer in an artificial intelligence project alongside Ive and Sam Altman from OpenAI.

Of course, it is very usual for someone to leave a job and seek a new role elsewhere. However, Tang Tan was responsible for designing Apple’s major products, including the iPhone. Resigning from the role responsible for creating the world’s most popular product at the world’s largest tech company is somewhat surprising. Moreover, along with this resignation, everyone from Jony Ive’s design team in 2019 has also left the company. This signals a potential problems within the company.

There is, of course, another and simple possibility. The project that Ive and Altman proposed working on might have captured Tang Tan’s interest more than the iPhone. Unfortunately, the project they are working on remains a mystery for now. However, already sounding like more than just a simple product. It is currently unknown who will take over Tan’s position as Apple’s new lead designer.

Open AI and former Apple designer Jony Ive plans to secure up to $1 billion in funding from Softbank for creating a new AI device. The AI Device Project has been termed the iPhone of artificial intelligence and Japanese conglomerate Softbank has already backed the project.

Open AI’s Sam Altman will collaborate with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom for the development of the first-ever OpenAI consumer device. The two companies have been reported to have held talks at Ive’s San Francisco studio. The goal is to create a new consumer product focused on OpenAI’s technology. The new device will deliver a more intuitive and natural user experience for AI engagements. The plan resonates with the Apple iPhone’s trajectory and its revolutionary impact on mobile internet for the mass market.

The AI Device Project is in the early stages of its design but various ideas are now under consideration. One of the important details is that ARM will have a significant contribution to the product. The chip designer is one of Softbank’s current investments. The collaborations will hopefully see the establishment of a company that pulls the resources of the three companies together. There are no formal agreements yet although talks are progressing smoothly.

Airbnb, the known home rental based firm, has recently hired the former Apple designer Jony Ive and his firm. It is a multi year partnership, which will have the firm design new Airbnb products.

For those unaware, Jony Ive was a close creative collaborator with Apple founder Steve Jobs. Ive has spent nearly three decades with the Cupertino based giant and has to lead the design behind the memorable Apple products like the candy colored iMacs and even helped in the company coming back from its near death in the 1990s and had left Apple back in 2019.

In a recent blog post from Airbnb Chief Executive Brian Chesky, the senior official announced that Jony Ive will also be helping the company’s internal design team. Earlier this week, Airbnb’s Chief Design Officer, Alex Schleifer, would be moving to a more part time role, while the company would look into a permanent replacement, as per a source close to the matter.

Jony Ive and his firm, LoveFrom, will be working with Airbnb in an effort to raise around 3 billion US Dollars in its upcoming initial Publix offering, according to sources. Airbnb is also expected to be one of the largest and most anticipated listings in the US stock market for 2020, which has already been a big year for IPOs.

iMac G3

The trending news in the tech space right now is the announcement by Apple that long-time design chief Jony Ive is taking a bow from the tech giant in a bid to start up his own company. Jonathan Ive until the announcement was Apple’s chief design officer. He joined the company is 1992 and for almost 30 years, has been responsible for designing Apple’s most iconic products like iPod, iMac and iPhone. Apple says it will still work with Ive on exclusive projects but as a client of the British/American industrial designer’s company named “LoveFrom”.

Jony Ive was the brain behind most of Apple’s designs and is believed to be the one keeping Steve Jobs’s knack for perfection alive through the design of Apple products. Jony Ive’s monumental contribution helped bring Apple back from the brink of obscurity with the design of the translucent iMac G3, the design of which was also adopted for the iBook G3 released in 1999. After that, probably one of the most futuristic looking products from Ive’s design stable was the G4 Cube, a computer that was encased in clear polycarbonate. Since then, Ive has become synonymous with some of the most popular Apple products like the iPhone and the Apple watch. Thus, it is safe to say Ive isn’t responsible for the design of the latest iPhones that have received knocks from various quarters due to what some say is a loss of creativity. The iPhones look like they were struggling to catch up with Android phones especially in the adoption of the notch-screen design. The same scenario is about playing out in the adoption of multiple rear cameras on the next iPhone XI, if leaked renders are anything to go by. The seeming loss of identity and creativity may have forced the British/American citizen out of Apple. It is difficult to point at any iconic product from Apple in the years after Steve Job’s demise. Recently, the company pulled the plug on the AirPower completely, citing difficulty meeting its own standards. That is after the product has been announced during the iPhone X launch in 2017. In another light, this could just be the quest for a fresh lease of life after so many years at Apple.

Ive’s works at Apple is aptly showcased in a video released a couple of years back. In November 2016, Apple launched a hardbound photo book chronicling 20 years of product designs. The book is titled “Designed by Apple in California,” and it comes in two sizes: small and large, priced at $199 and $299 respectively. Alongside the release, Apple posted a promotional video by the same name on its website featuring voiceover from Chief Design Officer Jony Ive and a sneak peek into their design studio.
