SMIC has now announced during an interactive platform held on Tuesday (August 11) that it has now been able to improve the yield rate of its 14nm manufacturing node. Apparently, the company was yet to finish fine-tuning the process but had to test run it with supplies for the Kirin 710A to Huawei who is under pressure to source for an alternative after the USgoovernment tended the ban on the use of US technology on Huawei to foreign companies such as TSMC which usesUS tech for their manufacturing processes.

Huawei has kept the Kirin 710 series chipset alive for a long while now. The Kirin 710 is the first chipset in the series followed by the Kirin 710F. They are both manufactured using TSMC’s 12nm node and integrates four A73 and four A53 CPU cores, with a maximum frequency of 2.2GHz. However, the Kirin 710A features the same architecture but since it uses SMIC’s 14nm process, the maximum frequency has dropped to 2.0GHz.

The patronage by Huawei has impacted positively on SMIC’s financial standing going by its report for the second quarter of the year. The financial report shows that as of June 30, 2020, the company’s revenue reached US$938 million, an increase of 4% month-on-month and 19% year-on-year. Gross profit was US$249 million, an increase of 6.4% month-on-month, and a year-on-year increase of 64.5%.

The 14nm/28nm advanced process revenue accounted for a new high, reaching 9.1%, compared with only 7.8% in the previous quarter.

Ahead of its official announcement, the upcoming tablet’s key specifications have leaked online. The leak reveals that the device will come with a 10.1-inch LCD display, offering 1920 x 1200 pixels screen resolution.

The display size is the same as the previous-generation model but there’s a slight increase in the screen resolution. The Huawei Enjoy tablet featured a 10.1-inch display with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution.

It is also revealed that the device will be powered by the company’s own Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 710A chipset. This is the same chipset that powers the recently launched Honor Tab 6 and Tab X6. This is an upgrade compared to the Kirin 659 chipset on its predecessor.

As for the camera department, the tablet could feature a 5-megapixel camera sensor on the back and a 2-megapixel front-facing snapper. It is reportedly powered by a 5,100mAh battery with 10W charging support — same as the original Enjoy tablet.

For those who are unaware, Kirin 710A is the first chipset from Huawei which is being mass-produced locally by SMIC in China. The chipset is almost similar to the Kirin 710 but is manufactured using the 14nm FinFET process instead of 12nm node.

While the company has not yet revealed the official launch date for the Huawei Enjoy Tablet 2, we expect the launch to take place pretty soon, in the coming weeks, given that the specs have already surfaced online.

The MediaPad T10 is powered by a 5,100mAh battery pack and supports the usual sensors, connectivity, and other ports. For optics, the rear has a 5 megapixel primary lens and a 2 megapixel selfie shooter. The Huawei MatePad T10s, on the other hand, features a larger 10.1 inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200px and a pixel density of 220ppi.

In terms of camera, battery, OS, and connectivity, the tablet has the same features as the MatePad T10. Apart from the display, the primary difference is also the storage variants, with a 2GB RAM + 32GB storage and 3GB RAM + 64GB storage variant. Unfortunately, the pricing and launch details of these tablets are currently unknown and we will have to wait for an official announcement, so take this report with a pinch of salt for now.

It appears that the Huawei sub-brand is gearing up to launch another phone in the same series. A leaked poster of the Honor Play 4e is now doing rounds on Weibo. The key specs of the smartphone are mentioned on the poster.

The Honor Play 4e poster reveals that it has a punch-hole display and its gradient is equipped with a triple camera system. The poster mentions that the Play 4e features a 6.39-inch display and it is packed with a big battery of 4,000mAh capacity.

The handset is fueled by Kirin 710A chipset and 4 GB of RAM. The internal storage of the device is 128 GB. The rear-facing camera setup is led by a 13-megapixel lens. The starting variant of the phone likely features 4 GB of RAM + 128 GB storage and it has a three-digit pricing for China.

The appearance of Honor Play 4e phone is quite similar to that of the Honor Play 3 that debuted last year in September. The Play 4e differs in departments like cameras and chipset. The Honor Play 3 is powered by Kirin 710F, but the Play 4e is said to be equipped with its variant dubbed as Kirin 710A. The Play 3 has a 48-megapixel triple camera system whereas the Play 4e has 13-megapixel triple rear cameras.

Honor is yet to confirm the existence of the Honor Play 4e. But additionally, it features SMIC’s 20th anniversary logo on the back with ‘Powered by SMIC FinFET’ text below it. This version of the handset has been gifted to all the employees of SMIC in Shanghai. There’s a less chance of this variant to be made available for regular customers.

Anyway, the partnership is more important to both the firms that the special edition Honor Play 4T. Until now, the Kirin 710 series (Kirin 710, Kirin 710F) was manufactured by TSMC using its 12nm FinFET process technology. The new variant also slightly differs in the clock speeds but the CPU cores are similar.

One would be wondering why celebrate in manufacturing a inferior chip. The answer to this is all the IP (Intellectual Property) used in designing and producing this chipset is said to be 100% Chinese. Thus, paving a way for Huawei to minimize its dependence on other foreign companies.

That doesn’t mean the Chinese telecom giant will drop partnership with TSMC anytime soon. The Taiwanese chipmaker is the market leader with the best technology.
As per the report, almost every employee of SMIC Shanghai received an Honor Play 4T smartphone last week which has “Powered by SMIC FinFET” printed on the back, showcasing the commercialisation of 14-nm FinFET chips made by SMIC.

While nothing much about the chipset is know, it is believed that Huawei is re-releasing the Kirin 710 processor branded as the Kirin 710A, but this time with a 14nm FinFET process. The original Kirin 710 SoC is made using the 12nm node by TSMC.

EDITOR’S PICK: Unitree A1 Robot competes against Boston Dynamics’ Robots and costs less than $10K

The Chinese giant isn’t yet ready to retire its Kirin 710 series and it keeps launching new variants of the chipset. Prior to this new 710A, the company had launched Kirin 710F which is powering the Honor 9X and Honor Play 3 smartphones.

The development comes just weeks after it was reported that Huawei is shifting its 14nm chipset orders from TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) to SMIC which is China’s leading chipmaker.

This seems like a major blow to TSMC which has been historically manufacturing Huawei’s HiSilicon chips, ranging anywhere from its 14nm, 12nm or even 7 or 5nm chipsets. This could be a trial run by the company to shift productions closer to its home. The decision seems to have been taken after the United States government recently tried hampering Huawei’s operations by limiting its chip supplies through TSMC.
